Donald Gene Giedd was born on Saturday, April 6, 1935 in Avon, South Dakota to Rudolph and Dorothy (Cecak) Giedd. He attended school through the 10th grade in Avon. After school, Don worked at a gas station in Avon, then joined the Air Force and was stationed at San Antonio, Texas for a year. He then moved to Illinois and worked as a hotel clerk for several years. He later moved to Wisconsin and worked as a security guard for 13 years, retiring in 1982. Don enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed going to stock car races. Donald passed away at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 19 days.
Donald is survived by his brother, Darrell Giedd and wife Adeline of Beloit, Wisconsin; a nephew, Terry Giedd and wife Pam, great-niece Taylor Giedd and great-nephew Jordan Giedd, all of Roscoe, Illinois; and several cousins.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Dorothy Giedd, and a nephew, Darrell Giedd, Jr.

Age 90
Blanche Gladys Nelson, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland.
Mrs. Nelson was born at home in Scotland, South Dakota on January 18, 1922. She was the second daughter of Albert and Mary (Kozel) Drinovsky. Her older sister, Alma, predeceased her. Blanche married
Harry Leroy Nelson on July 12, 1941 in the rectory of St. George Catholic Church. Harry was leaving for the military and she wanted to go with him. She followed Harry during military training to Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Georgia. When Harry left to fight in WWII, she returned to Scotland. They were married
for 48 years before his death in 1989. They both loved Scotland and remained there for their entire lives. Blanche had a unique sense of humor and mischievous spirit that will be remembered by all those who knew her.
Survivors include her two daughters: Marilyn Barclay of Denver, Colorado and Sandra Walloch and husband Don of The Villages, Florida. Mrs. Nelson’s five grandchildren are: Troy Barclay and wife Caitlin of Denver, Andrea (Walloch) and husband Tim Messer of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Donny, Justin and wife Jamie, and Nick Walloch of the Atlanta, Georgia area. Her great-grandchildren are Casey Barclay, and Malia and Maile Messer.
At the request of the deceased, no funeral Mass was held. She requested a private graveside service instead. In her memory, please buy a friend a candy bar or a red rose, since she loved both. Those wishing to make a donation in Blanche’s name may do so to either St. George Catholic Church or the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland.

Age 95
Irene Caroline (Reiner) Schaefer was born Thursday, October 5, 1916 in Tripp, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Weisz) Reiner. She grew up and attended school in Tripp. After she graduated from Tripp High School, she attended Southern State Normal School in Springfield, where she earned her teacher’s certificate. She taught for two years in Gramm Country School, southwest of Tripp. Irene was united in marriage to William A. Schaefer on May 15, 1938. The couple farmed for five years about 4 ½ miles southwest of Tripp and then moved to a farm near Centerville, where they farmed for three years. In 1946, they moved back to the Schaefer homestead where they lived for seventeen years. From 1964-1968, they lived on a ranch in Idaho, which had belonged to the parents of their daughter-in-law, Libby. Due to failing health, William decided to return to the farm in Tripp where he died on December 17, 1968. Irene left the farm in April of 1969 and moved in to Tripp. She was a member of the First American Lutheran Church. Irene was the Weisz family matriarch at last year’s reunion, being the oldest person in attendance. She lived the last 13 months of her life with her granddaughter near Crane, Oregon. Irene passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Harney District Hospital in Burns, Oregon, having attained the age of 95 years, 10 months and 11 days.
Irene is survived by two sons: Dennis and wife Libby Schaefer of Fields, Oregon and James Schaefer of Mitchell; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Henry and Katherine Reiner, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Schaefer; three brothers: Arthur, Albert and Otto; and five sisters: Mary, Edna, Esther, Annette and LaVerne.

Kerrie Lynn (Bjorum) Knakmuhs was born on Saturday, November 1, 1969 at Tyndall, South Dakota to Elden and Patricia (Engel) Bjorum. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. She was raised on the family farm one half mile west of Scotland, and graduated from Scotland High School in 1988. Kerrie married
Brian Goehring on September 10, 1988 at the Salem Reformed Church in Menno and two children were born to this union. She worked at Steven Ellis Auto in Yankton, the Cargill Elevator in Scotland, the Scotland Good Samaritan Center, the Menno-Olivet Care Center, the Hutchinson County Conservation District, the South Dakota Human Services Center in Yankton, and later became City Finance Officer for the City of Scotland. Steve Knakmuhs on March 31, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland. She loved to vacation in northern Minnesota and the Black Hills. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and making “Stamping Up” cards to give to her friends and family. Kerrie especially treasured the time spent with her family. She died on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at her residence in Scotland at the age of 42 years, 9 months, and 7 days.
Kerrie will be remembered always by her husband, Steve Knakmuhs of Scotland; a son, Tyler Goehring of Lesterville; a daughter, Stephanie Goehring of Lesterville; three stepdaughters: Joy (David) Rueb of Tyndall, Stephanie (Dan) Cain of Viborg, and Candy Knakmuhs and friend Cory Bjorum of Scotland; four grandchildren: Jordan Rueb, D.J. “Donald” Rueb, Alexys Rueb and Britney Rueb; her father, Elden Bjorum of Scotland; four siblings: Kristine McCann of Vermillion, Brian (Brenda) Bjorum of Valley Springs, Jodi (David) Fischer of Menno, and Cory Bjorum and friend Candy Knakmuhs of Scotland; three brothers-in-law: Mike (Annie) Knakmuhs of Brainerd, Minnesota, Paul (Nancy) Knakmuhs of Lamberton, Minnesota, and Mark Knakmuhs of Rapid City; two sisters-in-law: Bernice Batalden of Mesa, Arizona and Julia (Roger) Paluch of Sioux Falls; an uncle, Lynn (Nancy) Bjorum of Scotland; an aunt, Darlene Slowey of Yankton; eleven nieces and nephews: Hillary McCann, Sarah McCann, Andrew McCann, Courtney Sirvoy, Krista Bjorum, Brady Bjorum, Benjamin Fischer, Nicole Fischer, Kyliah Knakmuhs, Skylor Knakmuhs and Jaymison Knakmuhs; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her maternal and paternal grandparents, she was preceded in death by her mother, Pat Bjorum, in 2010, a niece, Brianna Bjorum, her parents-in-law, Edward and Dorothy Knakmuhs, and a brother-in-law, Todd Knakmuhs.

Age 91
Maurina W. Hille died on Friday, August 3rd, 2012 at her residence in Scotland at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 2 days.
Maurina Wilhelmina (Lange) Hille was born on Wednesday, December 1, 1920 at Crofton, Nebraska to William and Theresa (Lammers) Lange. She graduated from Crofton High School in 1938 and went on to earn her teaching certificate from Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota. She taught school for 15 years in numerous rural schools and in the Utica and Tyndall public schools, until her marriage in 1954. She truly loved the years she spent teaching and would often talk about her students.
Maurina was united in marriage to Allen Hille on June 19, 1954 at Crofton Nebraska. They farmed 9 miles southwest of Scotland for close to 50 years. They retired from farming in 1992 and moved into Scotland.
Maurina was a fabulous homemaker and a great cook who took pleasure in over-indulging anyone who got near her kitchen. She raised huge vegetable and flower gardens and canned anything she could get her hands on. She enjoyed doing embroidery, reading, cooking and canning, exercising and dancing.
Maurina was an active member of St. George Catholic Church; singing in the church choir, teaching catechism classes and serving as president of the St. George Altar Society. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Society Auxiliary of Scotland, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Scotland Historical Society, where she had served as secretary.
Maurina treasured her parents, siblings and her huge extended family. She had many close friends in the community. She was the best mother and grandmother that could be imagined. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Maurina is survived by her daughter, Marcia Hille, and son-in-law Doug Coates of Portland, Oregon; two grandchildren: Eden and Adrianna Coates of Portland; a brother, Harold Lange of Columbus Nebraska; two sisters: Mabel Heisinger of Tripp SD and Norma VanHeek of Crofton Nebraska; sister-in-law, Virginia Lange of Crofton Nebraska and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, William and Theresa Lange, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, in 2002, a brother, Robert Lange, a sister, Alda Goehring and three nephews, James Goehring, Paul Heisinger and Mark Lange.

Adella Wilhelmina Nickelena (Erps) Wold was born on a farm in Hutchinson County north of Scotland, South Dakota on Sunday, September 24, 1911. She was the youngest of six children born to August and Lena (Dockweiler) Erps. In 1915, the family moved from the farm into Kaylor. Adella attended the Kaylor Public School through the 10th grade. In March of 1928, they moved to Scotland. She worked in various homes in Scotland for several years. Adella was united in marriage to Albert Wold on January 21, 1931 and they raised a family of three children. She worked for Wold’s Grocery Store for nine years. She worked at the Scotland High School for seven years, first in the school lunchroom and later with her husband, “Ep, ” as a janitor, retiring in 1964. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scotland and the Scotland VFW Auxiliary. Adella passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland, having achieved the age of 100 years and 10 months.
Adella is survived by her three children: daughter Mina Treick of Ohio, son Gary Wold of South Dakota, and son Gale Wold of Texas; and three grandchildren: grandsons Scott Treick of Ohio and Tim Wold of Montana, and granddaughter Rhiannon (Wold) Gonzalez of Texas.
In addition to her parents, August and Lena Erps, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Ep” Wold in 1993; a grandson, Steven Treick; a son-in-law, Ronald Treick; four brothers: Bill, Emil, Ben and Edward; and a sister, Malinda (Erps) Lerssen.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland or the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland.
