Rose Olson

AVON -- Rose Charlotte Olson, 98, Avon, died Tuesday (May 6, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall.

Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tyndall. Burial is in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

She was born May 18, 1904, in rural Scotland to Lawrence and Barbara (Mikuska) Thaler. As a young child she moved with her family to a homestead near Geddes where she attended school in the Charles Mix County area. She married Herman Olson April 16, 1923, at Sioux Falls. She spent her entire life in the Charles Mix and Bon Homme county areas. She was a farm wife all of her life, until retiring and moving to Tyndall in 1972. She became a resident of the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center on Nov. 26, 1993.

She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and her enjoyment of fishing and gardening. She always had the coffee pot on at her home.

She is survived by three daughters: Mildred Trukke, Joshua Tree, Calif.; Eda Ehrisman, Tyndall; and Charlotte Wallace, Barstow, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Olson, Tyndall; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a brother, Frank Thaler, Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, one son and six siblings.

Phyllis Christol

VERMILLION -- Phyllis H. Christol, 86, Vermillion, died Tuesday (May 20, 2003) at Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center, Vermillion.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermillion, with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Burial is in the Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion.

Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Hepner Christol was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Vilas, to William Hepner and Ethel Parish Hepner. She attended school in Vilas and Madison and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1938. She married Max Christol April 19, 1939. As an Army officer's wife, she actively participated in community activities -- Nurse's Aid in several Army Hospitals, editor of a bilingual cookbook, "Cooking in Portugal," with proceeds given to Portuguese charities and with the German-American Womens Group and Franco-American Women's Club. She taught school at Ft. Monroe, Va., one year at Vermillion High School, in the public schools in Chicago, in the Army Education Centers at Kitzingen Harvcey Barracks in Germany and Coligny Caserne and Foret D'Orleans in Orleans, France and in the Anchor Bay School District at New Baltimore, Mich.

She and her husband lived in Vermillion since 1968 where she was a member of the United Church of Christ. She was vice-chairman of the Clay County Republican women and the Vermillion Women's Golf Club. She was appointed to the South Dakota Boundary Commission by Gov. Janklow. She received the Alpha Xi Delta Brinkman Award for her accomplishment and dedication to the fraternity and for her service to her community. She was a member of the Vermillion Quilters Guild and enjoyed making quilts for family members.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Judith (Jim Lynch) Christol Lynch, Boulder Canyon; two sons: John (Gunilla) Christol, Saratoga, Calif.; and Col. James (Donna) Christol, Yorktown, Va.; two brothers: Willis Hepner, Bloomer, Wis.; and Robert Hepner, Ephrata, Wash.; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family requests that any memorials be made to the University of South Dakota Foundation for the Alpha Xi Delta Scholarship Fund.

Richard Ridgway

WAGNER -- Richard Dale Ridgway, 56, Wagner, died Thursday (May 1, 2003) at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Avon. Burial with military honors in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon.

Visitation is 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner.

He was born Oct. 10, 1946, in rural Avon to Richard and Melba Ridgway. He attended Lone Tree No. 57 Country School through the eighth grade. He served in the U.S. Army for a short time during 1965. He married Patsy Thompson March 7, 1969, at the First Presbyterian Church, Avon. Three sons were born to the union. He married Linda Shields Dec. 2, 1988, at the Charles Mix County Courthouse, Lake Andes. He was a self-employed mechanic and carpenter.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting old cars, motorcycles and watching westerns, especially John Wayne movies.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, rural Wagner; sons: Chad (Tabitha), Crooks; Todd (Colleen), Scotland; and Wade, Avon; a daughter, Lexy Blaine, Greenwood; two step-children: Yvette Blaine, Wagner; and Michelle Blaine, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; his mother, Melba, Mitchell; siblings: June Ekeren, Mission Hill; Tommy Criswell; Linda Greger, Yankton; Barb Johnson, Yankton; Sandy Schweitzer, Scotland; David, Virginia Beach, Va.; Ray of Kansas; Robert, Avon; Janice Vander Lei, Springfield; Gloria Savers, Mitchell; Brenda Martin, Mitchell; and Dwaine, Sioux Falls; 38 nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, a son, his first wife, a granddaughter and a brother-in-law.

Murlin Olsen

COLERIDGE, Neb. -- Murlin A. Olsen, 91, Coleridge, Neb., died Saturday (May 10, 2003) at the Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Coleridge, with the Rev. Norman Sulaica officiating. Burial is in the Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Coleridge.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge.

He was born Feb. 28, 1912, at Hartington, Neb., to Ludwig and Agnes (McGee) Olsen. He grew up in the Hartington and Wynot, Neb., areas and attended country school north of Hartington. He served in the National Guard before his marriage. He married Berneice A. Janssen Sept. 24, 1936, at Coleridge. They farmed in the Coleridge area until moving into Coleridge in 1955. He and his wife owned and operated Ole's Tavern in Coleridge for several years. He then worked for the Cedar County Road Department and then for the Village of Coleridge. He drove the school bus for the Coleridge Public School for 14 years, retiring in 1976. He had been a resident of the Park View Haven Nursing Home since his wife died July 26, 2000.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and former member of the Coleridge Volunteer Fire Department.

He loved to watch sports on TV, particularly the Chicago Cubs and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Coleridge Café.

He is survived by three children: Yvonne (Duane) Dirks, Fontana, Calif.; Sylvan (Linda) Olsen, Coleridge; and Marcia (Don) Feelhaver, Coleridge; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lester Olsen, Redland, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son and three brothers.

Robert 'Bob' Bruder

CROFTON, Neb. -- Robert M. "Bob" Bruder, 51, Crofton, Neb., died Saturday (June 14, 2003) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral arrangements are pending with the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton.

Leola Heckert

RALSTON, Neb. -- Leola Heckert, 82, Ralston, Neb., died Friday (June 20, 2003) at her residence.

Funeral services are pending with the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, Neb.

LeRoy Blakey Jr.

LeRoy E. Blakey Jr., 59, Yankton, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with the Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial is in the Yankton Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Bob Blakey, Mark Blakey, Mike Lee, Myron Milk, Bob Stock and Larry Wuestewald.

Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home with the family present from 7-9 p.m.

He was born Feb. 13, 1944, at Yankton to LeRoy Sr. and Thelma (Truedell) Blakey. He grew up and attended schools at Yankton. At the age of 15, following his father's death, he began driving trucks. He then drove for Earl Holbrook for 25 years hauling cattle. He also drove for Patton Trucking, Dennis Aanning Trucking, R & M Trucking and K.I.T. Trucking. He drove for K.I.T. Trucking for eight years; he retired in 1996 because of his health. On Oct. 8, 1974, he married LaVonne Hoffman at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton.

His hobbies included hunting and farming. He was a Golden Glove Boxer in his teen years. He was a member of the National Riffle Association.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne Blakey; five sons: David Blakey, Yankton; Michael Blakey, Minneapolis; Kevin Blakey, Sioux City, Iowa; Travis Blakey, Yankton; and Roy Blakey, Yankton; five daughters: Michelle Blakey, Yankton; Vonda K. (Elmer) Richards, Fargo, N.D.; Tammy Blakey, Sioux Falls; Tara (Bob) Swanson, Yankton; and Tracey Blakey, Yankton; a step-son, Virgil (Kim) Janssen, Yankton; 11 grandchildren; four sisters: Mary Jane Lightener, Yankton; Phyllis Thornton, Yankton; Doris Ivory, Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Angeline Kirschenman, Yankton; a brother, George Blakey, Tea; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a sister, three nephews and a niece.

Arnold Weltz

SCOTLAND -- Arnold Weltz, 86, Scotland, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital, Scotland.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ, Scotland. Burial is in Rosehill Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3-6 p.m. at the Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel in Scotland.

Gail Rohweder

Gail C. Rohweder, 52, Yankton, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at her home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton.

Ronald Wentzel

PARKER -- Ronald James Wentzel, 53, Parker, died Friday (June 20, 2003) after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. today (Monday at the First Church of God, Marion. Burial is in the Greenwood Cemetery, Marion.

Arrangements are by the Walter Funeral Home, Marion.

He was born Sept. 5, 1949, in the Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, to Henry and Edna Wentzel. He attended school in Marion. He married Honey Sheer Nov. 23, 1968, in Chicago. He served two years of voluntary service in the military in Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Ill. He worked as a plumber, a farmer and was in agri-sales for 27 years, the last 13 years were with the Curry Seed Company, Elk Point.

He attended the First Church of God, Marion, and was baptized in the church on Oct. 18, 1981. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting and golfing. His biggest enjoyment was being with people and sharing his laughter with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Honey; two sons: Richard, Marion; and Matthew (Rita), Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Tracy, Sioux Falls; two grandsons; his mother, Edna; a sister, Pearl, Houston, Mo.; two brothers: Roy, Madison, and Rocky, Omaha, Neb.; his adopted brother and best friend, Darrell Herlyn; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son and his father.

Debora Jean Sherman

Debora Jean (Brewer) Sherman, 46, Yankton, died Friday (June 27, 2003) at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton.

Sandra Fox

Sandra R. "Sandie" Fox, 56, Yankton, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) near Mission Hill, in an accident.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Yankton with the Rev. Dayne Zachrison officiating. Burial is in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton.

Pallbearers are Ron Bertsch, Cliff Madson, Darrell Mogck, Darrell Mahoney, Jim Winterringer and Pal Wollman.

Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) with the family present from 7-9 p.m. at Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton.

She was born June 28, 1947, at Madison, to Ellwood and Ruby (Brown) Page. She grew up on a farm northeast of DeSmet. In 1965, she graduated from the DeSmet High School. She then attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in 1967.

On Dec. 17, 1966, she married Richard Fox at DeSmet. They lived at Madison while Dick finished college. They moved to Veblen in 1962, to Tripp in 1972 and then to Yankton in 1974. She purchased and operated Sharon's Beauty Shop for three years at Yankton. She was a school bus driver for Yankton Public School for 22 years and a Merchandising Associate for several companies for 18 years.

She enjoyed boating, flowers and decorating her home and yard.

She is survived by her husband, Dick Fox, Yankton; son, Brian Fox, Yankton; and father, Ellwood Page, DeSmet.

She was preceded in death by her mother.
