Blanche Granger
Mitchell - Blanche Granger, 87, of Mitchell and formerly of Aberdeen, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Reformed Church in Mitchell.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Riverside Cemetery in Aberdeen with Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Blanche Banker was born Dec. 24, 1914, to Brewster and Irene (Sargent) Banker in Dunseith, N.D. She received a bachelor and masters degrees in education from Northern State in Aberdeen.
She married Roe A. Granger on Dec. 9, 1940, in McIntosh. She taught at Simmons Elementary School in Aberdeen from 1961 to 1969. He died in 1969. She moved to Springfield, Ore., in 1969 and taught in Brattain Elementary School in the Springfield School District from 1969 to 1981, when she retired to Mitchell.
She was a member of Grace Reformed Church.
Survivors include three sons, Roe A. (Georgianna) Granger Jr. of East Lyme, Conn., Oscar R. (Karen) Granger of North Bend, Wash., and Frank "Tim" (Susan) Granger of Bellevue, Wash.; two daughters, Carol (Jon) Garry of Pierre, and Kathryn A. (Spencer) Gross of Mitchell; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and two sisters.
Alice Mae Gubin Nilsson
Santa Cruz, Bolivia - Alice Mae Gubin Nilsson, 93, formerly of Warner and Aberdeen, died Thursday, May 2, 2002.
There will be no service of any kind.
Her remains will be in the Warner Cemetery.
Alice Mae Gubin was born March 16, 1909, to Charles and Martha Gubin near Warner. She attended 11 years of school in Warner and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1928. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen and received a teacher's certificate.
She married Ernest A. Nilsson of Columbia on Sept. 14, 1929. She was living with her grandson, Darwin Nilsson and his family in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in South America at the time of her death.
Survivors include one son, Mervin K. Nilsson of Temecula, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one son.
Wilbur B. Makes Him First Sr.
McLaughlin - The funeral for Wilbur Makes Him First Sr., (Wanbli-Hoksila), 37, of McLaughlin will be at 10 a.m. CDT Monday at the Little Eagle Community Center. The Very Rev. Les Campbell will officiate with Issac Dog Eagle conducting traditional burial rights.
Burial will be in Emmanuel Episcopal Cemetery in Whitehorse. Issac Dog Eagle will conduct traditional burial rights. Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
An all night wake will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at the community center.
Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at his resi- dence.
He died of natural causes Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Fort Yates.
Wilbur Makes Him First was born Nov. 21, 1964, to Carl and Helmina (Chasing Hawk) Makes Him First in Rosebud. He lived in Rosebud until he was 6 years old, at which time he and his family moved back to the Cheyenne River Reservation and lived at Whitehorse. This is where he attended school and graduated from eighth grade. He then attended high school in Eagle Butte.
He married Susan Jamerson in 1983. The couple had three children.
He married Debra Moreno of Houston on July 27, 2001. The couple made their home in McLaughlin. In 1996, he was an actor in the movie "Crazy Horse" which was filmed in Rapid City.
He was active in Pow-Wow gatherings as a singer, dancer and dancing judge. He was known as a traditional artist and made roaches, bustles, quillwork, etc.
His hobbies included playing basketball, riding horses, hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, his paternal grandparents and his maternal grandparents.
W. Duane Hallstrom
Webster - W. Duane Hallstrom, 84, of Webster died Friday, May 31, 2002, at his home.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. The Rev. William Olsen will officiate.
Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery with Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster in charge of arrange- ments.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
Althea Scott
Glenham - The funeral for Althea Scott, 89, of Glenham will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham. The Rev. Stephen Daley will officiate.
Burial will be in the Glenham Cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge in charge of arrangements.
A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home in Mobridge and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church in Glenham.
She died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Bowdle Hospital.
H. Althea Walz was born March 10, 1913, to Christian and Paulina (Miller) Walz on the family farm south of Java. She grew up on the farm and attended rural school through the eighth grade. Her mother died when she was young, so after finishing her education she helped her father raise the family and work the farm.
She married Leopold Hochhalter on Dec. 8, 1932. They made their home on a farm near New Leipzig, N.D., for two years before moving to a farm nine miles east of Bowdle. They lived and worked on this farm until 1942, when they moved to Glenham. Her husband died in December of 1942. She continued raise her family in Glenham. She took in laundry, did house keeping, painting, canning, and baking to provide for her family. She was the Glenham switchboard operator for several years, operating the switchboard out of her home. She also worked at Anderson Dry Cleaners in Mobridge and operated the Glenham Cafe for a number of years.
She married Harry Scott on March 18, 1958. They made their home on a farm west of Glenham. He died in 1965. She lived continued to live on the farm until she entered the assisted living center at the Bowdle Nursing Home in August of 1999.
She was a member of St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham, the Mobridge Senior Citizens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She enjoyed crocheting many afghans, scarves, stocking caps and tea towels. She was known as a great cook and provider.
Survivors include two sons, Roman (Betty) Hochhalter of Montgomery, Ala., and Lester (Maureen) Hochhalter of Frankfort, Ill.; two daughters, Gladys J. Pfaff of Kent, Wash., and Charlotte (Henry) Piepenkotter of Coronado, Calif.; one brother, Ervin Walz of Hutchinson, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one son, two brothers and four sisters.
Casketbearers will be her grandchildren.
Donald William Schaeffer
McLaughlin - Mass of Christian burial for Donald William Schaeffer, 71, of rural McLaughlin will be at 11 a.m. CDT Tuesday at the Spirit of Life Church in Mandan, N.D. The Rev. Cyprian Meier will officiate.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT Tuesday in the UCC Cemetery in McLaughlin with the Rev. Steve Biegler officiating. Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.
A scriptural wake service will be at 7 CDT tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. CDT until the conclusion of the prayer service tonight at the funeral home in Mobridge and for one hour prior to the funeral Tuesday at the church in Mandan.
He died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Indian Health Services Hospital in Fort Yates, N.D.
Donald William Schaeffer was born Dec. 1, 1930, to George and Eva (Engel) Schaeffer in Dickinson, N.D. He farmed and ranched in the Selfridge, N.D., area all his life.
He married Violet Litzau on June 12, 1950. They made their home on a ranch north of McLaughlin.
He was chairman of the board of the Mor Gran Sou Electric. He served on the Farmers Union Board, Selfridge Rural Fire District, Cedar Soil District and Sioux County Water Board. He received an Outstanding Young Farmer Award, Selfridge Pioneer Award and Cedar Soil Conservation District Farm of the Year.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Robert) Lincoln of Spokane, Wash., and Connie Schaeffer of McLaughlin; five sons, Jeff (Mariann) Schaeffer of Selfridge, Jerry Schaeffer and Clay (Karen) Schaeffer, both of McLaughlin, Steve (Bernadette) Schaeffer of Beulah, N.D., and Scott (Jan) Schaeffer of New Prague, Minn.; two brothers, George Schaeffer of McLaughlin and Tony Schaeffer of Waverly, Neb.; three sisters, Dolores Fiechtner of Lynnwood, Wash., Norma Linder of Mandan and Jeanette Jachetta of Brighton, Colo.; special friend, Gertie Kraft of Mandan; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Casketbearers will be Jeff Schaeffer, Jerry Schaeffer, Clay Schaeffer, Steve Schaeffer, Scott Schaeffer and Robert Lincoln.
Bernita J. Graves
Aberdeen - Bernita J. Graves, 87, of Aberdeen died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Arrangements are pending with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W.
Roger A. Ganser
Aberdeen - The memorial service for Roger A. Ganser, 64, of Aberdeen will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. The Rev. Ronald Laue will officiate.
Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery in Leola at a later date.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, of cancer.
Roger Allen Ganser was born March 28, 1938, to Leo Joseph and Eva (Frank) Ganser in McPherson County near Leola. He grew up and attended school in the area. He worked for the City of Aberdeen for 28 years before retiring on March 17, 1995.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 590 of Aberdeen and the Eagles Club Lodge F.O.E.
Survivors include two sons, James (Wendy) Ganser of Rapid City and Jeffrey Ganser of Aberdeen; three daughters, Nancy (Bruce) Kinder of Aberdeen, Bonnie (Ben) Sharten of St. Francis, Minn., and Patty (Darwin) Behinke of Rapid City; one brother, Leroy Ganser of Sunnyside, Wash.; one sister, Marge Heibel of Martinez, Calif.; his mother of Aberdeen; three grandchildren, and special friend, Donna Engel of Aberdeen.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Erwin F. Ellwein
Ipswich - The funeral for Erwin F. Ellwein, 87, of Ipswich will be at 11 a.m. today at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Ipswich. The Rev. Raymond Pomplun will officiate.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. today in Morningside Cemetery in Roscoe with military rites by Elstad Archer American Legion Post No. 67 of Ipswich. Gramm-Hein Funeral Home in Ipswich is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
He died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Ipswich.
Erwin F. Ellwein was born April 12, 1915, to Gottlieb and Sophia (Hafner) Ellwein near Roscoe. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools. He entered the U.S. Army on March 24, 1941, and served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. He was honorably discharged Oct. 14, 1945, and returned to the family farm.
He married Cornelia "Cornie" Mayer on May 12, 1947, in Roscoe. They made their home on the family farm. They farmed there until retiring in 1977, when they moved to Ipswich.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Ipswich and was active in church activities. He was a past member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roscoe.
Following retirement from the farm he spent much of his time hunting, fishing and traveling extensively with his wife. He spent many hours doing woodcrafts and building furniture.
Survivors include his wife of Ipswich; two sons, Leon (Sarah) Ellwein of Chevy Chase, Md., and Neil (Mary) Ellwein of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two daughters, Susie (Jon) Elsea of Libertyville, Ill., and Cindy Ellwein of Pierre; one sister, Leah Wilber of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; and four great-grand- children.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Casketbearers will be Jake Volk, David Bauer, Jerry Leidholt, Franklin Mayer, Howard Mayer and Raymond Schmaltz.
