Charles L. Christiansen

Charles L. Christiansen, age 92, of Scottsdale, AZ, died May 9, 2008 at Scottsdale.
He was born October 1, 1915, at Madison, to Carl and Caroline (Boehmke) Christiansen. He graduated from Franklin High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University.
Charles was a veteran who served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force and also served in the Agency for International Development. Following his retirement from federal service, he worked for various U.S. corporations in the Middle East.
Survivors include three daughters, Caren (Jim) Pereira of Arizona, Janet (Steve) Castelpietra of New Jersey and Kimberly Christiansen of Texas; two sons, Charles Christiansen of Maryland and James (Sandy) Christiansen of Texas; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Paul (Audrey) Christiansen of Madison; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ann; and a half-brother, Ernest.

Clara A Frye

Clara A. Frye, age 98, of Madison, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Madison.
Clara Schmidt was born December 2, 1913, at Madison to Clarence and Josephine (Ryness) Schmidt. She graduated from Orland High School and worked in the Lake County Treasurer’s Office and also at Galloway’s Dept. Store. Clara married
Clarence Frye on March 14, 1937, at Madison. They farmed south of Madison for many years. They lived in Sioux Falls from 1945-55 and later returned to the farm. They moved into Madison in 1988.
Clara was a member of the United Methodist Church and June Circle, Hustling Housewives and Birthday Club.

SURVIVORS: include one son, Ralph (Marie) Frye of Mounds View, MN; one daughter, Gayla (Mike) Gyorfi of Yuba City, CA; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Williams of Madison.
Ida M. Walter, 88
Ida M. Walter, 88, of Huron, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Her funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Tom Brantner officiating. Burial will be in the Ideal cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Monday. The family will be present at the Kuhler Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Ida Martha Waldner was born Jan. 21, 1917, near Doland to John D. and Marie (Kleinsasser) Waldner. She grew up in rural Spink County and attended rural school.
On April 23, 1933, she married
Jacob J. G. Walter at her parents’ home south of Doland. They farmed near Virgil, Alpena, Carpenter and Yale before moving to Huron in 1957. She worked at Model Laundry, Swift and Company, and St. John’s Hospital/Huron Regional Medical Center many years before her retirement. Her husband died Feb. 6, 1990.
She was an active member of the First Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, walking, and visiting with her family. She loved to bake and her steam bread was among her family’s favorites. She and her husband left a rich Christian heritage as a legacy to their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Delbert; four sisters, Anna Kleinsasser, Dora Wurz, Mary Wipf and Matilda Wipf; and three brothers, Dave Waldner John J. Waldner, and Andrew Waldner.
She is survived by three daughters, Delaine Wipf of Huron, Sharon (Charles) Abrahamson of Ozark, Mo., and Geraldine (Neil) Warne of Watertown; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Imogene L. Dahl

Imogene "Imo" Dahl, age 94, of Madison, died Wed., Dec. 17, 2008 at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.
Imogene Alfson was born August 11, 1914, at Madison to Ingebrit and Regina (Verlo) Alfson. She grew up on a farm in the Nunda area and graduated from Rutland High School in 1932. On November 28, 1936, she was united in marriage to Ole H. Dahl at Madison. They made their home on the Dahl Homestead south of Nunda, where they farmed until their retirement and moved into Madison. Her husband died in 1987. Imogene moved to Bethel Assisted Living in 2001 and to Bethel Lutheran Home in 2004 where she resided until her death.
Imogene was a member of the Lake Madison Lutheran Church and ladies circles. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the church choir with a lovely soprano voice. She sang solos and duets at many occasions.

Frieda Huether, 85
Frieda Huether, 85, formerly of 335 21st St. S.E., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Olivet Mennonite Church with the Rev. David Koch officiating.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning.
Frieda M. Schortzmann was born Dec. 14, 1918, to Carl and Sophia (Weidenbach) Schort-zmann on a farm in rural Alpena. She attended grade school and graduated from Alpena High School in 1936.
On July 16, 1936, she married
Waltimore Huether at Alpena. They farmed near Alpena until 1960 when they moved to Huron. She was employed at the Huron Clinic from 1960 to 1973. In 2001 she became a resident of Prairie Crossings and in August of this year she entered the Huron Nursing Home.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Mennonite Church and the Ladies Fellowship.
She is survived by one brother, Palmer (Leatta) Schortzmann of Merced, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Waltimore, on July 13, 1976; an infant son, Quentin Carl Huether, on Dec. 7, 1961; three brothers, Marvin, Milton, and Ervin Schortzmann; two sisters, Alma Huether and Hilda Beach; a great-nephew, Bruce Wessel; and a great-great-nephew, Matt Wessel.

Cora J. Petersen, 88, died on Saturday, June 10, 2006, in the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks, Minn.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks, Minn. The Rev. Duane Baun will officiate.
Burial is in the East Hendricks cemetery in Hendricks. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Hendricks Hospital Chapel on Tuesday and will resume prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
The Birk Funeral Home in Hendricks is in charge of the arrangements.
Cora J. Petersen was born on May 8, 1918, near Hendricks, Minn., to Martin and Gina (Sommervold) Christopherson. She was raised near Hendricks and was baptized and confirmed at Lake Hendricks Lutheran Free Church.
On Nov. 12, 1938, she married
Holger Petersen. Following their marriage they lived near Lake Benton, Minn., where she helped on the family farm.
Throughout her life, Cora lived in several communities in South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado; before returning to Hendricks in 1999. She entered the Hendricks Nursing Home on April 3, 2006.
In her earlier years she enjoyed having coffee with friends, neighbors and family. She also enjoyed sitting on the front porch visiting and watching children play. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and dancing.
She is survived by her eight children: Richard (Gloria) Petersen of Hendricks, Gayle Sudduth of Hendricks, Harry Petersen of Wichita, Kan., Leon Petersen of Wichita, Tommy (Gail) Petersen, Garber, Okla., Jerry (Loretta) Petersen of Haysville, Kan., Billy Petersen of the Philippines and Linda Knott of Hendricks; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Marcella (Millard) Lang of Starbuck, Minn., Vada (Walter) Blom of Hendricks, Joyce (Glen) Anderson of Elkton, Helen Hemish of Canby, Minn., and Alice (James) Leuning of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry, Leonard, Kenneth and Clifford Christopherson; two sisters, Viola Kloskin and Pearl Bergman; and one granddaughter, Natisha Rowland.
Ivan J. Stotz

Ivan J. Stotz, 66, died at his home on June 10, 2006.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow at the family residence.
Ivan James Stotz was born Sept. 10, 1939, in Faulkton, to Alfred and Leona (Hettich) Stotz. As a boy he grew up on a farm near Tolstoy and graduated high school from Plainview Academy in Redfield.
Ivan was drafted in 1963 and was honorably retired from the Army in 1965 after serving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., as a medical corpsman, hospital attendant. Ivan attended SDSU, receiving a B.S. Degree in Biology and a M.S. Degree in Microbiology. He worked for 35 years at the Veterinary Science Diagnostic Laboratory at SDSU as an electron microscopist, retiring in 1999.
Ivan’s first marriage was to Donna Raetzman of Redfield in 1961 and they had three sons. In 1983 Ivan married
Phyllis Frost in Las Vegas. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed deer hunting with his sons, gardening, cutting wood, motorcycling with his wife and most recently going to Hy-Vee in the morning for coffee with friends.
He is survived by his father, Alfred (Marj) Stotz of Redfield; his wife, Phyllis of Brookings; two sons, Jon (Sheila) of Sinai and Jasen (Paula) of Elkton; two step-children, Todd (Ursula) Johnson of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Lynelle (Doug) Brigham of Volga; one sister, Marietta Miller of Montevideo, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; two nieces and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his mother and one son, James.
Alice T. Bortnem Kean

Alice T. (Bortnem) Kean, 95, of Lake Placid, FL and formally of Brookings, SD, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at Lake Placid Florida Hospital in Lake Placid, FL. Funeral services have been set for 11:00am Friday, March 2, 2012 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.
Alice T. Bortnem was born on May 26, 1916 in Brookings County, South Dakota the daughter of John R. and Carrie (Overskei) Bortnem.
Alice spent her early years and received her education in rural schools in Brookings County, Brookings High School and graduated from Volga High School in 1934. She continued her education at Madison Normal in Madison, SD. She was united in marriage to Thomas Kean on October 4, 1953 in Brookings, SD. Alice was then employed at the Brookings Hospital for several years. After their marriage they lived in Milbank, SD, where she was employed at the Milbank Hospital and Lakefield, MN until moving to Two Harbors, MN, where they lived for thirty years. In 1990, they moved to Brookings, SD. Thomas died on March 20, 1995 in White, SD.
Alice was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed golfing, curling, hunting and fishing.
She is survived by one daughter, Judy Guinn of Lake Placid, FL; one son, Nyles Kean and his wife Judith of Two Harbors, MN; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Barrett of San Leandro, CA, and Lois DeGeest, and her husband, Boyd of Winona, MN.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, five brothers and five sisters.
Richard “Bill” Owen Bingham, 86
Richard “Bill” Owen Bingham, 86, of Pittsburgh, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004.
His funeral will be Monday at noon at the Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield with his family conducting the services. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery with full military rites.
Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Richard Owen Bingham was born July 18, 1918, to Bena and Perry Bingham on the family farm in Redfield. The eldest of eight children, he was raised on the farm and moved to Rochester, Minn., in the 1930s. He married
his wife of 51 years and later moved to Minneapolis.
In 2002 he moved to Pittsburgh. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, fishing and hunting.
He served in World War II as a chief petty officer in the Navy and worked in the elevator industry for 38 years.
His faith in Jesus and grateful association with Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 30 years supported his successful sobriety.
He is survived by four children, Janet Baloga, Pam (Silvia Malagrino) Bingham, Nancy Bingham, and Bob (Kathryn Sitter) Bingham; five grandchildren, Scott (Diane) Frankenberg, Laura (Scott) Miner, and Maya, Kyra and Bena Bingham; three great-grandchildren, Hayley, Brent and Madison Miner; former wife, Doraine Bingham; two sisters, Miriam Waddell and Ruth Clarin; and other family and friends.
Mamie Caroline Herrick
January 3, 1921 - February 19, 2012
Mamie C. Herrick, 91, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at United Retirement Center, in Brookings. Funeral services will be held 10:30am on Friday, February 24, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, in Brookings. Visitation will from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings.
Mamie Caroline Overend was born the second of eight children on January 3, 1921 to Simon Peter and Louise (Rust) Overend in rural Bushnell, SD. She attended country school in rural Elkton before graduating from Brookings High School in 1940. She then received her Teaching Certificate from General Beadle in Madison, SD. She then started teaching Country school in rural Elkton. On February 18, 1951 she was united in marriage to Howard C. Herrick. The couple farmed near Elkton and Howard for several years and Mamie continued to teach country school in Brookings and Moody County. During her summers off from school, Mamie continued her education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. In 1965 the couple moved to Brookings where Mamie started teaching the fourth grade at Central and Medary Elementary Schools before retiring after 42 years of teaching in 1983. Following her retirement, she and Howard spent most of their time traveling and sightseeing in the West and Southwest part of the country. Howard passed away in 1994. Mamie continued to make her home in Brookings until the time of her death.
Mamie loved to go to coffee with her friends, as well as playing card games with them. She also was an avid fisher and spent a lot of time with other retired teachers. Family was an important thing to her as she spent time seeing and visiting her extended relatives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brookings.
Mamie is survived by her brother, Robert (Pat) Overend, of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard, three sisters and three brothers.
