Milton L. Pederson, 72, died on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda with the Rev. Terry Knudson officiating. Burial is at the Prairie Queen cemetery in Nunda. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
He was born on Oct. 15, 1931, in Brookings County the son of Henry and Olga (Nelson) Pederson. He was baptized in the Oslo Lutheran Church. He attended rural Brookings county schools and the Rutland High School. He then served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He married Julia Sonen on Aug. 26, 1952. The couple farmed until his retirement in 1996. He loved his cattle and they always knew his whistle.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda, was adjutant and treasurer of the Nunda American Legion Post No. 105 and a member of the ITC Board of Directors. He was an entertainer with a natural talent and he played several musical instruments. He was a jokester, always making people laugh. He enjoyed his family and friends so much. He collected old photographs and could recite much of the Lake and Brookings County histories. He also loved to read.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; his children, Kathy (Bob) Cheatham of Mesa, Ariz., Susan (Ken) Beckley of Brookings, Douglas (Julie) Pederson of Volga, Joan (Bruce) Rottum of Rapid City, Betsy (Roger) Beckley of Lennox and David (Jody) Pederson of Volga; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother Olga of Brookings; his brother, Don (Jeannie) Pederson of Nunda; his sister, Marlys (Don) Scherschlight of Wessington Springs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Ruby Pearl Sonen.

Gladys Maas

Died: Wed., Mar. 11, 2015
Gladys V. Maas, age 92, of Wentworth, SD, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at her daughter's home in Madison surrounded by her family.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Wentworth with burial at Rose Hill cemetery, Wentworth. The family will be present for visitation 5-7 PM Friday with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Ellsworth Funeral Home.
Gladys Frager was born April 1, 1922, near Rutland, SD, to John and Josephine (Johnson) Frager. She was baptized May 22, 1922 and confirmed on May 9, 1937. Gladys graduated from Madison High School and married Milton Maas on December 8, 1941, at Pipestone, MN. They farmed near Wentworth all their married life. Milton passed away in 2002 and Gladys remained in her home near Wentworth. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Wentworth (LCMS) and the Country Ladies Birthday Club. Gladys enjoyed gardening and spent many hours doing her embroidery. She loved visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons Arland and Ray; an infant sister Janice; two brothers Larry and Arland; and one sister, Lillian Jackson.
Survivors include one son, Gale (Diana) Maas of Wentworth; four daughters, LaVonne (Dan) Shaw of Madison, Glenda (Lon) Ihler of Madison, Arla (Tom) Baumberger of Wentworth, Leanne (Randy) Carper of Rutland; one daughter-in-law, Joan (Doug) Merager of Madison; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Renner and Jenean (Bert) Sample both of Madison; and one brother, Norval (Phyllis) Frager of California.

Lowell S. Peterson
Brandt
June 24, 1932 - Aug. 13, 2004
Lowell S. Peterson, 72, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at the Hendricks (Minn.) Hospital, after a courageous struggle with cancer.
A committal service is at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Highland Lutheran cemetery in rural Brandt with the funeral service immediately afterward in the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt with the Rev. Carlene Rhody officiating. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Houseman-Eng Funeral Home in Clear Lake.
He was born in Hendricks, Minn., on June 24, 1932, to Oscar and Johanna (Kjenstad) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt. He attended Brandt and Astoria Schools, graduating from Astoria High School in 1950. After graduation, he served two years in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.
He married Mary Fjellestad on June 17, 1955, and they farmed near Brandt until his retirement. Mrs. Peterson died on June 23, 2000. He married Lucille King on Sept. 14, 2002.
He was a lifelong dedicated member of Highland Lutheran Church, serving as deacon on the church council for many years and most recently serving as council president. He had a tremendous love of music, and his and Mary’s musical talent made them much in demand to sing at many weddings and funerals. He also had a great interest in rural electric programs, serving as a director for H-D Electric Cooperative in Clear Lake for nine years. He also sas a director for Heartland Consumer Power District in Madison. He enjoyed the electric utility industry and the many friends and acquaintances he made throughout the years.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Brandt; four sons, Dan (Sue) Peterson of Sioux Falls, Paul Peterson of Brandt, Jim (Lori) Peterson of Brandt and Tom Peterson of Brandt; one daughter, Becky (Jesse) Garza of Beresford; two stepsons, Arlo (Arvella) King of Mt. Holly, N.J., and Neil (Kathy) King of Clear Lake; one stepdaughter, Ellen (Terry) Grimlie of Sioux Falls; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Helen) Peterson of Volga; one sister, Helen Koval of Bellvue Wash.,and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes Mary Costello, 92
Agnes Mary Costello, 92, of Milbank and formally of Wessington Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Milbank Area Hospital-Avera Health.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs with the Rev. Don Grubb officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 7:30 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs, with the family present from 4:30 to 7:30. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Agnes Mary Bill was born Jan. 5, 1912, in Bates Township, Hand County, to John and Clara (Muehleisen) Bill. At the age of ten she moved to Wessington Springs with her family after a fire destroyed the family farm. She graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1933. She attended one year of normal school at Wessington Springs Junior College and taught at the Wagner School west of Wessington Springs and at Roosevelt School in the Alpena area.
On March 7, 1936, she married Ralph Readle Costello. He died Jan. 20, 1949. The first few years after his death, she stayed home to raise the children. As the older children began leaving home, she worked at some of the local stores and then returned to Wessington Springs Junior College to earn her two-year teaching certificate. In January 1961 she began her 20-year career as the Jerauld County Clerk of Courts, issuing marriage licenses to her daughters, Mary and Dorothy, and granddaughters, Susan, Penny and Cheryl. She retired in January 1981.
She was a longtime member of United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs where she was confirmed. She was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Women’s Circle and for a few years provided janitorial services. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America.
In November 2003, she moved to Park Place, an assisted living facility, in Milbank to be nearer her daughters. She enjoyed gardening, traveling with family members and attending all kinds of events in which her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated.
She was a Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed listening to the games on the radio.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary (Mike) Nitz of Milbank, Dorothy (Frank) Ames of Brookyln Center, Minn., LaVonne Costello of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Connie Costello of Huron; two sons, Lloyd Costello of Brandon and Gene (Joan) Costello of Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Maynard Bill of Anaheim, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, James “Jim” Costello; a stepson, Richard “Dick” Costello; a sister; three brothers; and an infant brother.

Gordon Lee Knox
Clear Lake
Feb. 23, 1937 - Aug. 12, 2004
Gordon Lee Knox, 67, died on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held Thursday in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Greg Myrmoe officiating. Burial was in the Lakeview cemetery in Clear Lake.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1937, to McKinley and Tillie (Selland) Knox in Clear Lake. He was raised on a farm near Clear Lake and attended the Clear Lake Schools. Following his education, he helped on the farm.
On Nov. 22, 1958, he married Elaine Mellendorf in the Woodlake Lutheran Church near Astoria. The couple lived and farmed south of Clear Lake. Mr. Knox farmed with his brother, Wally, until 1995. In 1996, they moved to their current home.
He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He also belonged to the Sportsman’s Club in Clear Lake. He loved antique tractors and trains. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading history books.
He is survived by his wife, of Clear Lake; three children, Laurie (Jeff) Selchert of Watertown, Larry (Kim) Knox of Brookings and Gary (Janice) Knox of El Dorado, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Darwin (Sharon) Knox of Minneapolis and William (Amy) Knox of Kirkland, Wash., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debra, and one brother, Wallace Knox.

Edward Harrington
Garretson
March 14, 1910 - Aug. 23, 2004
Edward Harrington, 94, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Palisade Manor Nursing Home in Garretson.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman. Burial is at St. Thomas Catholic cemetery in Madison. Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. scripture service at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Colman. Memorials may be made to the South Dakota Lions Foundation, 800 N. West Ave., Sioux Falls SD 57104.
He was born March 14, 1910, at Wentworth to Andrew and Johanna Martin Harrington. He received his education in Wentworth Public Schools and then he attended Columbia College in Sioux Falls and later graduated from the University of Minnesota.
He married Eoline Marshall in 1936 at Montrose. He worked for more than 70 years at Dakota State Bank, a bank his father founded in 1901. In addition to banking, he was active in the insurance industry form more than 50 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Colman Area Recreational Golf Course.
He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the South Dakota Bankers Association, the Independent Bankers Association, the American Bankers Association, Alcoholics Anonymous, the Elks Club of Madison and the Knights of Columbus in Colman. He was a lifetime member of the Democratic Party.
He is survived by two daughters, Chaille (Jack) Womack of Salida, Colo., and Virginia Harrington of Crooks; a grandson; a sister, Celeste Harrington of Garretson; two nieces; a nephew, and friends Jo Anne Van Fleet of Sioux Falls and Inez Fitzgerald of Brookings.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Clarence, and a sister, Helen.

Sylvia Bergerson, 90
Sylvia Bergerson, 90, of Cedar Park, Texas, and formerly of Huron, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Hearthstone Health Center at Round Rock, Texas.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Brand-srud officiating.
Burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gar-dens cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Wednesday afternoon. The family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Sylvia Margaret Simon was born Nov. 7, 1914, to Mathias and Grace (Clark) Simon on a farm near Lebanon. She attended country school and then high school at Lebanon. In the early 1930s she came to Huron and studied at Samaritan Hospital where she worked as a medical technician.
On Jan. 5, 1935, she married Harold Bergerson. In addition to raising her family she worked at the Sears Store as a catalog manager for 20 years.
She was a member of the American Lutheran Church for more than 60 years and took part in many church activities. She was also a member of the PTA, Degree of Honor Lodge, sold juvenile insurance, worked with the Girl Scouts and helped with school lunches. She moved to Texas in August 2001 to be closer to her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Joseph) Faulkner of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Gary (Dolores) Bergerson of Cedar Park, Texas; four grandchildren, Michael (Kay) Faulkner, Ryan (Tiffany) Bergerson, Robin Bergerson and Lisa (Ashley) Cotton; three great-granddaughters, Aloytia Faulkner, Mandala Faulkner and Tori Cotton; two sisters, Edith Baus of Ipswich and Victorine (Frank) Schlezes of Rochelle, Ill.; two brothers, Royce (Betty) Simon of Lebanon and Gerald (Yula) Simon of Sioux City, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Herb Benck of Wichita, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Jan. 29, 2001; two brothers, Edward Simon and Sylvester Simon; five sisters, a stillborn, Althea Simon, Lavicia Vikre, Lucille Kuhns and Joyce Benck; two sisters-in-law, June Simon and Mary Ellen Simo

Monica A. Phelps
(January 27, 1922 - December 6, 2008)
Monica A. Phelps, age 86, died Sat., Dec. 6, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital.
Monica Alberta Severson was born January 27, 1922 at Madison, to Martin and Emma (Hanson) Severson. She was raised on the family homestead north of Madison, attended Morrill Country School and graduated from Madison High School. She married Ronald Phelps on March 19, 1940 at Pipestone, MN. They farmed the Severson homestead which later became the Phelps farm. Ron and Monica resided on the farm where they raised their children and tended the land. In 1983 they moved into Madison, but continued to help out on the farm. Monica also assisted her husband with his insurance business for Lake County Fire Co. and DeSmet Farm Mutual Insurance Co.
She was a member of Lake Madison Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, Needlecraft Club since 1940, S.O.S. Club, and Sandpiper Camping Club. She was a past member of Rebekah Lodge and was on a bowling team for several years.
Monica and Ron were recognized by the state of South Dakota in 1985 for having a Century Farm.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2004; two sisters, Marie Schaldack and Lorraine Abraham; two brothers, Harold Severson and Martin “Bud” Severson, Jr.; an infant brother and an infant daughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Doris (Edward) Hinchcliffe of Cottage Grove, MN and Barbara Phelps of Madison; one son, Duane (Kathy) Phelps of Madison; seven grandchildren, Michael (Julia) Phelps, Matthew (special friend Mary Colling) Phelps, Shelly (Russ) Thoemke, Jody (Bill) Leimbek, Debbie (Tim) Marty, Bonnie (Dave) Utsch and Kathy (Craig) Andrews; 10 great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Severson of Madison and Alice Severson of Sioux Falls.

George Wilbur Sanderson
Cold Spring, Minn.

George W. Sanderson, 94, died on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Cold Spring, Minn.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings with the Rev. Teri Johnson officiating. Burial is at the Greenwood cemetery in Brookings.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1909, in Arapahoe, Colo., to Everett G. and Mary (Johnson) Sanderson.
Early in his childhood, his family moved back to the Brookings area, where he graduated from South Dakota State University in 1934 with a degree in dairying.
He was then employed with U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service in the Red River area of North Dakota for 36 years. He retired in 1972. He married Ella E. Butts of Miller on May 31, 1936. He lived a full and healthy life.
He enjoyed gardening and flowers. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his three children, Bette Schafer of St.Louis, Richard G. Sanderson of Fort Myers, Fla., and Judi Rae Moen of Cold Spring, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Cecil (Grace) Sanderson of Brookings, and three sisters, Viola Young of Santa Ana, Calif., Athalyn (Johnnie) Bakkene of Canton and Nina Butts of Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Elmer and Dean; two sisters, Laura and Alice, and his wife, Ella, in 1990.

Lindsay C. May
(February 2, 1981 - January 27, 2009)
Lindsay C. May, age 27, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at her residence.
Lindsay Christina May was born February 2, 1981 at Bismarck, ND to Charles E. and Kathy (Borns) May. She grew up in Madison and graduated in 1999 from Madison High School. During her schooling, she was very active in Girl Scouts, FFA and 4-H. She was employed at Hardees Restaurant, Bethel Lutheran Home and Lake Vet Clinic. After graduation, she attended Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN for vet tech training and was employed as a C.N.A. at various hospitals and nursing homes.
She moved back to Madison and worked with Volunteers of America, an organization focused on clean water issues and wind energy. She also was employed at Pizza Hut, Boss’ Pizza, Black Sheep Coffee Co. and Doggy Day Care at Mini-Critters in Sioux Falls.
Her greatest loves in the world were her daughter and the many lost and abandoned animals that came to her for tender loving care. She enjoyed music and dancing, and had a huge circle of family and friends all over the country.
preceded in death BY: her father Charles; her grandparents, Cliff & Dot Borns, Hank & Lillian Reimer; and Jack May; and her great-grandmother, Orma McInnis.
SURVIVORS: her darling 20 month-old daughter, Charli Kay Price of Sioux Falls; her parents Kathy and Scott Janke of Madison; her sister Erica of Maryland; two nieces; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and her pets.
