Merle R. Knutson
Arlington
Jan. 18, 1925 – Aug. 5, 2004
Merle R. Knutson, 79, died on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at his farm home near Arlington.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Monday at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington with the Rev. Steve Mundfrom officiating. Burial was in the Arlington City cemetery, with military honors by the Arlington American Legion.
He was born Jan. 18, 1925, at rural Humboldt, to Morris O. and Rosie (Swenson) Knutson. He attended Laundale Dist. No. 83 and Colton High School.
In 1940, the family moved to a farm east of Dell Rapids and he graduated from Trent High School in 1943. He began farming with his father and was drafted into military service in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1946.
He married Carol P. Reed on Oct. 26, 1947, at Trent Baptist Church. hey owned and operated the Trent Café for three years before moving to Garretson in 1950, where he was the Standard Oil agent for that area. In 1953, they opened a Phillips 66 service station and bulk gas business in Aberdeen. The couple moved to rural Oldham in 1957 and began their farming career. In 1965, they purchased a farm northeast of Arlington.
He retired in 1986. Mrs. Knutson died on Jan. 6, 1995.
On July 26, 1997, he married Shirley Sweeny at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Arlington. The couple traveled to various points in the United States and visited Shirley’s family.
They remained on his farm where he planted many trees and cared for his land through the CRP program. He enjoyed the country life and had special interests in fishing, hunting, wood carving, gardening and yardwork, bird watching and spending time with family and friends.
He was an active member of the Calvary Free Lutheran Church and Edger Herrick American Legion Post No. 42 of Arlington. He was also supportive of the 60s Plus Dining Program in the Arlington community.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one son, Greg (Ivona) Knutson of Brookings; four daughters, Yvonne (David) Dobson of De Smet, Renae (Arden) Hammerstrom of Minneota, Minn., Deborah Harmel (fiancé Jason Johnson) of Minneapolis and Kristy (Walt) Brown of Arlington; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Knutson of Dell Rapids and Richard (Arlis) Knutson of Custer; one sister, Donna (Don) Broksieck of Leavenworth, Kan.; numerous nieces and nephews, and Shirley’s children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol; two sisters, Dolly Anderson and Harriet “Sis” Kroger, and one brother, Morris “Sam” Knutson.

Violet M. Paulson
Clear Lake
Feb. 20, 1905 - Aug. 8, 2004
Violet M. Paulson, 99, died on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt; the Rev. Carlene Rhody officiated. Burial was the Highland Lutheran cemetery in rural Brandt.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1905, on her grandparents' farm near Brandt to Marvin and Caroline (Kjenstad) Iverson. She was raised near Brandt where she attended grade school. While in grade school, she worked at the telephone office after school and during summers.
On October 3, 1923 , she married Louie Holmberg in the church parsonage in Brandt. Their first five months they lived in Sioux Falls and then moved back to Brandt. While her husband was trucking, she purchased the Pantry Café in Brandt which she owned and operated for the next seven years. She took a year off from work and then went to work as a telephone operator where she worked for more than 20 years. In 1960, Mr. Holmberg died. She then moved to Watertown, where she worked for Jenkins Living Center as a nurse’s assistant.
On Nov. 1, 1967, she married Arnold Paulson. The couple lived near Brandt. Less than a year later, Mr. Paulson died. She then moved to Clear Lake, where she worked for the Deuel County Memorial Hospital for 14 years. She lived in her own home until the age of 96. On April 23, 2001, she entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake.
She was a lifelong member of the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a great cook and enjoyed flowers.
She is survived by two half-sisters, Thelma Sheldahl of Park River, N.D., and Audrey Hanson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Anna Iverson of Decorah, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, one brother, three half-brothers and three half-sisters.

The Rev. Victor L. Walter, 73
The Rev. Victor L. Walter, 73, of Yale died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethesda Church in Huron with the Rev. Rick Wolgamott officiating.
There will be no visitation and burial of his cremated remains will be at Loveland, Colo. The family requests no flowers and prefers memorials be made to Child Evangelism of South Dakota or the Byron Bible Camp. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Victor L. Walter was born March 11, 1931, on the Sudan United Mission Field in Nigeria, Africa, to Victor E. and Mabel (Skogsberg) Walter. At the age of five he returned with his family to the United States, growing up in the Midwest and various places in the Rocky Mountain region.
He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, Colo., in 1952 and 1954. He received a bachelor of divinity at Western Theological Seminary in Portland, Ore., in 1958. In 1968 he received a master’s in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, N.J. He worked on his doctorate at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1969 to 1972, completing all but his dissertation.
He married Leora Mae Machmer at Loveland, Colo., in 1954. He served as pastor at churches in Lakewood, Colo., Cheyenne, Wyo., New Brunswick, N.J., and taught at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School from 1973 to 1981. He served a church in Aurora, Ore., next served as district superintendent for the Evangelical Free Church of North America in the Pacific Northwest district from 1984 to 1989 and then became pastor of a church in Cheyenne. He retired from there in February 2004 and accepted the interim pastorate at Bethesda Church in Huron. He was currently serving as interim pastor at Bethel Church at Yale.
He was an avid reader; enjoyed modeling with clay, building miniature cities and buildings; and collected elephants. He also enjoyed long walks, picnicing with his wife and time spent with her in the mountains or on beaches. He loved serving the Lord and people through his ministry.
He is survived by his wife of Cheyenne; four children, Sheryl Slocum of Lake Geneva, Wis., Rodney (Melody) Walter of Avoca, Wis., Larae (John) Thompson of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Blake (Jane) Walter of Wheaton, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Claire, Rebecca, and Jacob Slocum, Gabriel and Anna Marie Snell, and David and Katherine Walter; two brothers, Dr. George (Bonnie) Walter of Scotts Valley, Calif., and the Rev. Paul (Susan) Walter of St. Louis, Mo.; and one sister, Mary Davis of Aurora, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Elmer G. Franken
(February 15, 1923 - December 13, 2008)
Elmer G. Franken, age 85, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Heritage Senior Living, Madison.
Elmer G. Franken was born Feb. 15, 1923 at Toronto, SD to George and Tina (Walters) Franken. He attended school in Argo Township graduating from the 8th grade. Elmer worked several jobs in the White and Toronto area as a farmhand; including for his sister Alice and her husband Peter Kruse and Irvie & Gladys Mennis. He joined the Army in November 1948 serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in September 1951. Elmer married Maxine Steinback on Sept. 15, 1950 at Brookings. After his discharge, they farmed until November 1961. He worked as a farmhand for many years in the White, Brookings and Winfred areas including working for Don Show. He was also custodian at Garfield School in Madison and at his church for several years. Elmer and his wife were also caretakers at Prairie View Apts. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Madison American Legion and he served as mayor of Winfred. He greatly enjoyed being with his family and having coffee with friends.
preceded in death BY: his parents; his wife in 2001; three brothers Matt, Jack and Hank Franken; five sisters Grace Heppler, Ethel Winkowitch, Ella Smidt, Alice Kruse and Anna Mae Krein.
SURVIVORS: include his seven children and their spouses – Barbara (Don) Gause of Madison, Brice (Brenda) Franken of Madison, Belinda (Dan) Fritz of Madison, Blaine (Marcia) Franken of Clear Lake, Bernice Ripperger of Pierre, Beverly (Chris) Thayer of Sheridan, WY and Bradley (Brenda) Franken of Madison; 18 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister Gertie Odegaard of Mitchell and one sister-in-law Irene Franken of White.

Arthur M. Lenning
Brookings
Dec. 17, 1916 - Aug. 7, 2004
Arthur M. Lenning, 87, died on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce. Burial is at St. Petri cemetery in Bruce. Military graveside services will be performed by the Bruce American Legion. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
He was born on Dec. 17, 1916, in Brookings, the son of Fred and Marie (Casberg) Lenning.
He spent his early years and received his education in rural school in Brookings County.
After receiving his education he served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He married Mary Williams on Dec. 26, 1945, in Minnesota.
They then farmed in Hamlin County until 1948 when they moved to Chicago.
Mr. Lenning was then employed as a auto mechanic at Ford Motor Co. for 30 years in Chicago. Mrs. Lenning died on Sept. 19, 1975. In 1976, he moved to Huron to live with his brother, Lloyd, and sister-in-law, Maxine, until entering the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in January 1993.
He is survived by two daughters, Rhonda (Kirby) Branham of Morton Grove, Ill., and Ruth (Roger) Harvey of Grand Junction, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lloyd (Maxine) Lenning of Brookings, Stanley (Marlys) Lenning of Sioux Falls and Clifford (Corlys) Lenning of Brookings, and five sisters, Hazel (Dick) Ching of Watertown, Palma (Dale) Kreger of Clear Lake; Florence (Robert) Hintz of Arlington, Joyce (Dale) Svennes of Brookings and Eunice Colberg of Toronto.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; three sons, Ronald, Richard and Roger; one daughter, Rosemary; one brother, Morris, and three sisters, Joyce Constance, Hilda and Helga.

Mary Agnes Murphy Hageman, 85
Mary Agnes Murphy Hageman, 85, of 1860 Idaho Ave. S.E., died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at her home.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Church of the Resurrection with the Rev. Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Ceme-tery.
Friends may call prior to the Mass at the church this morning. Welter Funeral Home announced arrangements.
Mary Murphy was born on Dec. 2, 1918, to Mr. & Mrs. Joe (Mary Carbery) Murphy at Iroquois. She grew to adulthood in the Iroquois community. She attended rural grade school near Iroquois and graduated from Iroquois High School in 1936. She then attended Aberdeen Normal College for one year and received her teaching certificate. She returned to Iroquois and taught rural school for six years. She was employed for Armour and Company for several years, and worked for the U.S. government with the Bureau of Reclamation and Department of Energy for 10 years.
She married Emerson Hageman on Oct. 24, 1946, in Huron. She has lived in Huron since that time.
She was a longtime and active member of St. Martin’s Church and Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Catherines Band, and NARFE.
She imparted her love for education and learning on her children and grandchildren. Their mother’s faith and unconditional love for her family and friends will always be remembered by her children.
The family wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to Robin Engebretson, CNA, for the loving care she gave to mother.
She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Adams of Huron, Karen (Orville) Kleinsasser of Miller, and Cindy Mack of Lincoln, Neb.; one son Tom (Vicki) Hageman of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter-in-law, Ginny Christopherson of Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren, Signe, Scott, Heidi, Tami, Vicki, Troy, Jason, Lindsay, Mark, Philip, Clara and Naomi; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1937; her mother in 1960; her husband, Emerson, in 1997; her son Bill, Hageman; one son-in-law, Fred Adams; and one brother Con A. Murphy.

Rosalie (Baltzley) Reider, 86
Rosalie (Baltzley) Reider, 86 of Woonsocket, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Woonsocket with the Rev. Bill Miller of Woonsocket officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide cemetery at Woonsocket.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church Monday morning.

Dr. V.R. Nelson
Born: Thu Jan 20, 1921
Died: Sat Apr 28, 2012
Dr. V. Ronald Nelson, age 91, of Sioux Falls, Professor of Physics and Aeronautics at Augustana College for 50 years, died Sat., April 28, 2012, at his residence.
Vernon Ronald Nelson was born to L. James and Cora (Bakke) Nelson on January 20, 1921, at Webster, SD. He graduated from Waubay High School, attended the University of Iowa, and graduated from Augustana College in 1944. He received his Master and Doctorate degrees from the University of Colorado. He served in the US Navy Air Corps from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. His post-doctoral study was at Michigan College of Engineering, University of Illinois and University of North Carolina.
In 1946, he was appointed instructor in physics and mathematics at Augustana College, Sioux Falls. During a distinguished teaching career he served as chair of the Physics and Math Dept. In the 1960s, directed by Dr. Nelson, Augustana operated the largest aviation ground school in the Upper Midwest and, in 1974, was selected as the test center for all aviation ratings.
Dr. Nelson was the designer and builder of the first heart stimulator (defibrillator) used at McKennan, Sioux Valley, Mitchell and Parkston Hospitals. He was a key figure in the design and installation of the electronic system at Zip Feed Mill, billed as the “world’s most modern feed mill”, in Sioux Falls. He built the first transmitting equipment for Augustana’s radio station, KAUR-FM. He was active as a consultant in accident reconstruction as well as the design and manufacture of gas controls for furnaces and water heaters.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Augustana Fellows, Augustana Booster Club, SD Academy of Science, American Institute of Physics, American Assn. of Physics Teachers, National Science Teachers Assn., Sigma Xi National Research Honorary and Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honorary. He served for many years as Federal Aviation Examiner and was a Certified FAA Ground School Instructor of Private, Commercial and Instrument Pilots. He was active in many local community agencies, including Good Samaritan Society and United Day Care.
V.R. was the recipient of several honors and awards which included Augustana Founders Day Award, Alumni Achievement, Friend of Augustana Award, Good Samaritan Society Service Award, FAA “Spirit of Flight” and was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2008.
Survivors include his wife Dr. Joyce Nelson of Sioux Falls; one daughter Cindy (Robert) Ellsworth of Madison; two grandsons, Adam Ellsworth of Sioux Falls and Dr. Andrew (Laura) Ellsworth of Boise, ID; one great-grandson Eli Ronald Ellsworth; one sister, Dr. Elaine McIntosh of Green Bay, WI and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Margaret (Meester) Nelson.
Services will be 11:00 AM, Wed., May 2, 2012, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Ave., Sioux Falls. Visitation will be one hour preceding the service at the church. Burial with Military Honors will be at Woodlawn cemetery, Sioux Falls. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be directed to the Nelson-Ellsworth Scholarship Fund at Augustana College or First Lutheran Church Media Ministry.

Pete P. Glanzer, 88
Pete P. Glanzer, 88, of Huron, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Bethesda Church with the Rev. Rick Wolgamott officiating. Burial will be in the Restlawn Mem-ory Gardens cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Memorials may be directed to James Valley Christian School or Bethesda Church.
Peter P. Glanzer was born March 7, 1916, near Yale to Paul P. and Mary B. (Hofer) Glanzer. He grew up in the Yale area and graduated from Yale High School. He served three years in the Army in the European theater of operation. He was with the 109th Engineers of the 34th Infantry Division from Feb. 1941 to June 1945.
On Oct. 21, 1945, he married Elsie Tschetter and they lived in Huron. He was employed for 36 years by Northwestern Public Service in Huron until he retired in 1981.
He enjoyed numerous activities such as church functions, golfing with his buddies, woodworking, family reunions, Army reunions and travel. He was a staunch supporter of sporting events involving students of all ages, especially at James Valley Christian School.
He is survived by his wife Elsie of Huron; one daughter, Vicki Krogstrand (Bill Beach) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; one son, Randy (Jane) Glanzer of Rapid City; nine grandchildren, Rob Glanzer and fiancé Jodi Lesselyoung of Rapid City, Callie Glanzer (Charley McDonald) of Bozeman, Mont., Mikal (Alice) Krogrstrand of Moscow, Idaho, Patrick Hiles of Garretson, Nick (Anna) Robbins of Rapid City, Tom Robbins of Anchorage, Alaska, D.J. Lesselyoung of Rapid City, Taylor Beach and Morgan Beach, both of Lincoln, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Robbins of Rapid City and Riley Glanzer of Bozeman; one brother, Miller (Marilyn) Glanzer of Sioux Falls; three sisters, Rose Glanzer of Huron, Laurene Wood of Holiday, Fla., and Irene Anderson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sam and Dave; three sisters, Anne, Emma and Mary; one son-in-law, Jerry Krogstrand; and brothers-in-law, Norm Wood, Glen Anderson, Joe C. Hofer, Ken Tschetter and Menno Tschetter.
