Kenneth Townsend Beckel
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Kenneth Townsend Beckel, 80, of 515 Fifth Ave. S.E. will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E. The Rev. Terry Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., is in charge of arrangements.
A liturgical wake service will be 7 tonight and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:30 tonight, both at the mortuary.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, all at the mortuary.
He died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
Kenneth Townsend Beckel was born June 10, 1920, to William and Elda (Townsend) Beckel in Austin, Minn. In 1928, he moved with his family to Aberdeen. He attended Sacred Heart Parochial School, Roosevelt Junior High School and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1938. Following high school he worked at Dayton Yard-Milwaukee Railroad for one year. He later attended Northern State Teachers College until being drafted into the U.S. Army on April 15, 1942. He attended basic infantry training at Camp Roberts, Calif. He took his exam for Army Air Corps and later was transferred to Santa Ana, Calif., for ground school training, then transferred to Cal-Aero Academy for flight training, then to Lancaster, Calif., for basic flying school. He was later transferred to Stockton Field, Calif., for advanced flying school, finishing there in July 1943. He was part of a 10-man B-17 crew. As a co-pliot of a B-17 bomber during World War II, he flew 50 missions from a 650-mile radius out of Amanadoa Air Base near Foggia, Italy. He returned to the United States on Sept. 1, 1944.
He married
M. Marjorie Aggen on Sept. 24, 1944, in Aberdeen. He served an additional two years in the Army Air Corps stationed at bases in Hobbs, N.M., and Tampa, Fla. He received his honorable discharge in July 1946. Following his discharge he received numerous medals and citations for his service during World War II including the Victory Medal, a 50 Missions Ribbon and a European Theater Operations Medal. They returned to Aberdeen and he continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves for 24 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1970. In 1946, he began working at the Giese Tire Company. He later purchased the company, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1982.
He served on the City Board of Adjustments for 10 years, belonged to the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, Aberdeen Lions Club, Roncalli Foundation, Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Grand Knight and as a Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, where he served as Post Commander for two years and served on the Funeral Honor Guard for many years, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the United Commercial Travelers.
He volunteered much of his time for civic and church functions. He served as a lay Eucharistic minister and as a parish council member. He was a van driver for the elderly to attend Sunday services, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in various capacities for more than 13 years.
Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; two sons, David (Jean) Beckel and Jeff Beckel, both of Aberdeen; five daughters, Barbara (Dave) Overland and Lisa (Norris) Tiensvold, both of Sioux Falls, Roxana (Jacque) Block of Columbia Heights, Minn., Patricia (Robin) Johnson of Brainerd, Minn., and Kimberly (Wayne) Beck of Aberdeen; one sister, Marjorie MacDonald of Salt Lake City; one brother, Ronald Beckel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son in infancy.
Casketbearers will be Herb Clinton, Charles 'Bud' Forrest, Ronald Jarrett, Val Lacher, Hank Lussem, Paul Mardian, T. Sydney Mortenson and Martin Opem.
Yvonne Ritterhouse
Brookings -- Mass of Christian burial for Yvonne Ritterhouse, 51, of Brookings will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hosmer. Monsignor Marvin McPhee will officiate.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church.
She died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Yvonne Malsam was born Nov. 18, 1949, to Theophiel "Dave" and Leona (Hopfinger) Malsam in Eureka. She attended country school and graduated from Hosmer High School in 1968.
She married
Teddy Opp in June 1968. They lived in Aberdeen where she worked as a nurse's aide at St. Luke's Hospital. In 1972, they moved to a farm east of Eureka and moved to Fort Morgan, Colo., in 1974. In 1975, they returned to South Dakota, and in 1979 she became supervisor at Northwest Fabrics in Aberdeen. In 1980, she was promoted to store manager. She was transferred to Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1983 to open a new Northwest Fabrics store. She was divorced in 1986 and moved to Casper, Wyo., in 1987. She was named regional manager of Northwest Fabrics stores in 1989.
She married
Gary Ritterhouse on Nov. 21, 1989, in Aberdeen. In 1994, they moved to South Dakota and purchased a ranch east of Hillsview where they raised elk. In 2000, they moved to Brookings where she worked at Daktronics.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hosmer and was founding secretary of the South Dakota Elk Breeders Association.
She enjoyed sewing, animals, the outdoors, winter sports and gardening.
Survivors include her husband of Brookings; two sons, Keith Opp of Eureka and Wade (Kellie) Opp of Sioux Falls; one stepson, Josh Ritterhouse of Brookings; her mother of Hosmer; eight brothers, Robert Malsam, John Malsam, David Malsam, James Malsam and Troy Malsam, all of Aberdeen, Jerome Malsam of Hosmer, Thomas Malsam of Mellette and Richard Malsam of Tulsa, Okla.; four sisters, Carol Barth of Lodi, Calif., Joanny Janish of Aberdeen, Lucy Vadakin of Hosmer and Margaret Lasse-gard of Rapid City.
She was preceded in death by her father and one infant brother.
Casketbearers will be her brothers: Robert Malsam, Jerome Malsam, John Malsam, Richard Malsam, David Malsam and Thomas Malsam.

Kathleen Kathy' Ann Hengen
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Kathleen 'Kathy' Ann Hengen, 44, of 915 S. State St., will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E. The Rev. Terry Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. today at the mortuary.
She died of cancer Friday, June 1, 2001, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Kathleen Ann Hengen was born Nov. 19, 1956, to Hubert Casmir and Mary Ann (Poulicek) Hengen in Omaha, Neb. She attended Holy Name Elementary School and graduated from Marian High School in 1975. She attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha where she majored in market management and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. She entered a management training program for Kmart Corp., with her first assignment in an Omaha Kmart store. She was then transferred to Moline, Ill., to continue the training program. She also worked at the Kmart store in McPherson, Kan., before moving to Aberdeen to work as the soft lines manager and assistant store manager. She also worked at Wal-Mart and Presentation Convent in Aberdeen.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, where she was a lector and Eucharist minister. She was a member of the Altar Society, Band No. 8 and 11, where she was involved with bazaars, potlucks and funeral luncheons. She was also a member of the Sierra Club, Angel of Mercy Prayer Group and Bible Study Group. She was also active in Business and Professional Woman's Association during her career in retail.
She enjoyed bowling and coaching youth bowling when she lived in Omaha. She also enjoyed traveling. She participated in a student tour of Russia as a college student.
Survivors include her daughter, Kendra Ann Hengen of Aberdeen; two sisters, Susan M. Gorny of Canton, Mich., and Mary Lou Sorensen of Omaha; and special friend, Daniel C. Block of Aberdeen.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Casketbearers will be Rick Sorensen, Paul Gorny, Keith Block, Charles Block, Doug Block and Larry Block.
Edwin 'Eddie' Oswald
Sioux Falls -- The funeral for Edwin "Eddie" Oswald, 83, of Aberdeen will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 1500 E. Melgaard Road in Aberdeen. The Rev. Harold Salem will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be visitation from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
He died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his daughter's home in Sioux Falls.
Edwin Oswald was born Oct. 9, 1917, to Edward and Bertha (Pfeifle) Oswald in Hazelton, N.D. He worked as a custodian in the Aberdeen Public School system for many years.
He married
Lucinda "Beth" Blake on Aug. 20, 1938, in Aberdeen. She died Sept. 23, 2000.
Survivors include three daughters, Rosalie Guiry of Scottsdale, Ariz., Glenda (Chuck) Carrier of Gilbert, Ariz., and Valli (Tom) Mark of Sioux Falls; two sons, Rod (Bev) Oswald of Spearfish and Torrie (Suzi) Oswald of Chaska, Minn.; two sisters, Rosine Young and Lora Steen, both of Aberdeen; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Casketbearers will be his family members.
Raylene Rose Red Fox
San Jose, Calif. -- The funeral for Raylene Rose Red Fox, 41, of San Jose and formerly of Aberdeen, will be at noon MDT today at the Cherry Creek Gym. The Rev. Norman Blue Coat will officiate.
Burial will be in the Congregational cemetery in Cherry Creek. Luce Funeral Home in Eagle Butte is in charge of arrangements.
She died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Terrino Gardens in Los Gatos, Calif.
She was born Oct. 26, 1959, to Rita Condon at the Old Cheyenne River Agency. She lived her first two years in Cherry Creek and Eagle Butte with her aunt and uncle, Audrey and Harry Howard. She moved to Fresno, Calif. with her mother and attended grade school in Fresno and high school in San Jose, Calif. She married
and was a housewife, and she lived in San Jose until her death.
Survivors include her husband, Faustino Curiel; two sons, Eliseo Red Fox and Eulalio Red Fox, both of Merced, Calif.; her mother, Rita Woolard of San Jose; two sisters, Yvonne and Marva of San Jose; one brother, Carlan of San Jose; and many half brothers and half sisters of Eagle Butte.
Sister Moira Martin
Aberdeen -- Sister Moira Martin, 84, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died of natural causes Friday, June 1, 2001, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Her funeral was June 6 in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Heights. The Rev. Ken Luft officiated.
Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery with Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E., in charge of arrangements.
Mary Gretchen was born Feb. 2, 1917, to Regina Marsh and Eli Martin in Cavour. She graduated from Cavour High School. She then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, earning a bachelor of science degree in education in 1953 and a master of science degree in education in 1966. She entered Presentation Convent on Aug. 25, 1935. She made her profession to the Presentation Congregation on Aug. 11, 1938. She taught in elementary parish schools at Milbank, Mitchell-Notre Dame, Madison, Jefferson, St. Mary's in Sioux Falls, Bridgewater, Sacred Heart in Aberdeen and Anoka, Minn. She taught for 40 years, with 12 of those years as an elementary principal. She was a librarian at St. Mary's in Sioux Falls for 10 years and St. Thomas School in Madison for six years. She moved to Aberdeen in 1995 and worked as a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was a member of the South Dakota Library Association, an active member of the International Reading Association and Right to Life Association.
She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include three sisters, Sister Myron of Presentation Sisters, Elaine Weidenman and Betty Bergstrom, both of Huron.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.
Casketbearers were her nephews.
Dorothy O. McLaughlin
Aberdeen -- The funeral for Dorothy O. McLaughlin, 78, of Aberdeen will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 1500 E. Melgaard Road. The Rev. Harold E. Salem will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.
Dorothy Klipfel was born Sept. 5, 1922, to John and Ottilea (Roeszler) Klipfel at Long Lake. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school near Long Lake. She graduated from high school in 1940. She then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received her teacher's certificate. She worked at various jobs and spent time in Texas, Minneapolis and Akron, Ohio, before returning to Aberdeen with her children in 1969. She was employed at several places in Aberdeen before retiring from 3M in 1986. In her retirement, she traveled extensively and continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Spirit of St. Luke's Retirees.
She loved traveling and had visited Europe, Israel and Chile. She enjoyed visiting with friends and cooking. She was known for her pickles and German dishes.
Survivors include three sons, James Crouch and Chuck (Wanda) McLaughlin, both of Aberdeen, and Bob (Loretta) McLaughlin of Westport; two brothers, Herbert Klipfel of Lodi, Calif., and Oscar Klipfel of Forbes, N.D.; one sister, Anna Goehring of Ashley, N.D.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Casketbearers will be Jonah McLaughlin, Steven Crouch, Greg Sands and Dick Salwei.
Harlan G. Stanley
Hewitt, Texas -- Harlan G. Stanley, 89, of Hewitt and formerly of Brentford, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at a Waco, Texas, hospital.
His memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco. The Rev. Peggy Ogden-Howe will officiate.
Burial will be in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Harlan G. Stanley was born March 5, 1912, in Brentford. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the 322nd Infantry.
He married
Margaret Ruth Johnson on Nov. 7, 1947, in Webster. He lived in Hershey, Neb., before moving to Waco in 1995. He was last employed as a nurses' aide at the Waco Veterans Affairs Hospital.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and participated in the Senior Citizens Bowling Leagues for many years.
Survivors include his wife of Hewitt; two sons, David (Mary) Stanley and Mike Stanley, both of Hewitt; one daughter, Lois (Ed) Hoffman of Frankfort, Ky.; one brother, Irving Stanley of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Phyllis Achizlger of Moses Lake, Wash.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Maynard Summers Sr.
Fort Pierre -- The funeral for Maynard Summers Sr., 62, of Fort Pierre will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the LaPlant Community Building. The Rev. Charles Snipes will officiate.
Burial will be in the Congregational cemetery in LaPlant with Luce Funeral Home in Eagle Butte in charge of arrangements.
He died of natural causes Saturday, June 30, 2001, at his home.
Maynard Summers was born Sept. 18, 1938, to Milton and Ada (Chase Alone) Summers in LaPlant. He grew up in LaPlant and received his education at the Old Cheyenne Agency. He entered the U.S. Army Airborne and served for three years. Following the service he moved to the Hayes-Fort Pierre area and worked for area farmers and ranchers. He was currently living in Fort Pierre.
He married
Mae D'Horse in LaPlant.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Ann Summers of Cannonball, N.D., and Minnie Summers of Wanblee; one son, Maynard Summers Jr. of Glendale, Ariz.; two brothers, Edward Summers and Milton Summers Jr., both of Cannonball; one sister, Belva Frank of Isabel; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three grandchildren and one brother.
