Funeral Service for Britynn Constance Haug, Kinanana wankantanya kinwan winyan, “The butterfly that flies highest woman” five month old daughter of Landon and Jill Haug of Watertown, SD was held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Pastor Richard Felch officiating. Pianist was Mary Beth Kirk. Pallbearers were Brandon Haug, Terrence Haug Jr., Tim Dahl and Arlan Spronk. Honorary Pallbearers were Lucas Ryan, Bowen Ryan, Drake Haug, Jonah Lombaard, and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Visitation was on Friday, one hour prior to the Funeral Service.
The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Britynn was born on January 18, 2011 at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI to Landon and Jill (Dahl) Haug. Before her birth she was diagnosed with a heart problem. Britynn passed away on June 17, 2011 at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI.
Britynn is survived by her parents, Landon and Jill (Dahl) of Watertown, SD; three brothers, Lucas Ryan, Bowen Ryan and Drake Haug of Watertown, SD; grandparents, Lynelle Haug of Sisseton, SD; Charles Greeley of Sisseton, SD; Rick and Heather Dahl of Watertown, SD and Tim and Sherry Sesso of Rapid City, SD; great-grandparents, Marcella Haug of Sisseton, SD; Duane and Barb Dahl of Watertown, SD and Daisy Spronk of Pipestone, MN and several aunt, uncles and cousins.
Britynn was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Constance Dahl, Geritt Spronk, Bernard Haug and Lillian Greeley.

Walter Nicolai
Walter Nicolai, of Montevideo, MN and formerly of Maynard, MN and Sisseton, SD, died on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Chippewa Co-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 94. Committal services were held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sisseton Cemetery in Sisseton, SD with Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating.
Walter Julius Nicolai was born on July 2, 1916 to Emil and Emily (Keller) Nicolai. He grew up in the Montevideo/Maynard, MN area and attended rural schools. On January 12, 1946 he was united in marriage to Cora Eide in Seattle, WA. They made their home in the Montevideo area, where he farmed and worked at an elevator. They moved to Minneapolis, MN where he worked for a number of years as a church custodian before retiring. Following his retirement, they lived at a home on Belle Taine Lake for about six years before moving to Sisseton, SD. Following the death of his wife Cora, he moved to Montevideo, MN and lived at Brookside Manor until moving to the Luther Haven Nursing Home about two years ago. He loved to fish, enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed his family.
He is survived by two sons: William (and Linda) Nicolai of St. Paul, MN and Ronald (and Rosemary) Nicolai of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren: Stacy, Andrea, Luke and Ryan; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Nicolai of Roseville, MN; two sisters, Margaret Larsen of Montevideo, MN and Marion Harvey of Clara City, MN, as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cora in 1998; and by brothers, Morris, John and George Nicolai.
The Anderson Funeral Home of Montevideo, MN was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil “Hepan” Renville
Funeral Service for Cecil Anthony “Hepan” Renville Sr., 84, of Agency Village, SD was held on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center, Agency Village, SD, with Senior Catechist John Cloud III officiating. Pianist was Billy Kohl. Drum Group was Shortfoot Creek.
Pallbearers were Romeo Renville, Lonnie Rodlund, Jerome Renville Sr., Gabriel Rodlund, Creighton Renville, Evan Rodlund, Brian Rodlund Jr., and Kip Renville. Honorary Pallbearers were Larry Goette, Faye Johnston, Delano Renville, Charlie Wyman, Duane Gronau, Francis “Kojak” Heminger and all of Cecil’s friends and The Veterans Groups of the Sisseton Area.
Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, with Military Rites by the Sandmen. All Night Wake Services were held on Tuesday, and Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center.

Cecil was born on October 24, 1926 in Sisseton, SD to Mason and Rose (Barker) Renville. He grew up and attended school at Peever and Old Agency. He worked for area farmers and broke horses.
Cecil served in the United States Army from March 14, 1951 to March 25, 1953, where he received the Army offlag Occupation (Germany) Badge. Following his discharge he worked for many area farmers.
Cecil was united in marriage to Mabel Spider. He liked to attend rodeos, and he was a baseball player, he also liked to hunt and fish and was a grass dancer. He loved to play and joke with his grandchildren and liked to play the slots. Cecil passed away on June 18, 2011 at his home in Agency village, SD.
Cecil is survived by one son, Cecil Renville Jr., one step daughter, Cheryl Spider of Agency Village, SD, one sister, Tina Renville of Agency Village, SD, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, special granddaughter, Lakota Renville, several other grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, Cyril, Mason Jr., Loretta, Lacquetta, Gladys, and Lila.

Glenn Smith
Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Glenn Smith, age 85 of Wilmot, SD who passed away June 22, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Milbank, SD. Funeral services were Friday, June 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. Rev. Dr. DeVern Schwenn officiated and burial was in the Wilmot City Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the church from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and continue Friday, June 24, 2011 one hour prior to the service. Casketbearers were grandsons: James Johnson, Jack Johnson, Justin Johnson, Hubert Smith, Blake Laird, and Travis Smith. Music was provided by Ken Cameron, vocalist and Sharon Ammann, organist.
Glenn Harlan Smith was born September 28, 1925, in Rochester, MN. He was the son of Hubert Warren and Ella Caroline (Bruesch) Smith. He served in the United States Army, enlisting on June 29, 1944, and was honorably discharged on May 17, 1946. While in service, Glenn was awarded the Purple Heart. He returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage with Bernice Fokken on July 18, 1948.
Glenn was a rural mail carrier for many years. He was also a lineotype operator for the Wilmot Enterprise. He worked at the Wilmot Locker Plant and was also employed at his brother’s grocery store in Chancellor, SD. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. Bernice passed away September 8, 1995.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Douglas and wife Brenda Smith of Mustang, OK; Becky and husband Guylis Johnson of Wilmot, SD; Glenda Smith of Wilmot, SD; daughter-in-law Shelley Smith of Aberdeen, SD; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Smith of Jackson, CA; one sister, Gertrude Crown of Wilmot, SD; and dear friend, Bev Lentz of Bird Island, MN. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice; son, Randy; grandson, Guylis, Jr.; two brothers: Lloyd and Verne.

Funeral arrangements for Clarence Rafelle Williams, 94, of Mobridge, SD were at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge, SD. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Visitation was from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services. Military honors were provided by the Mobridge Parker-Browder Americanflag Legion Post #4. Clarence passed away June 18, 2011 at his home in Mobridge.
Clarence Raffelle Williams was born December 24,1916 in Corning, IA to Harvey M. and Ethel (Lantz) Williams. In 1918 the family moved to a ranch near Okaton, SD, and later moved to a succession of farms in southeastern South Dakota. Clarence attended rural schools until seventh grade. He attended Argonne Consolidated High School where he participated in baseball, basketball and track, graduating in 1937. During high school he also worked as a farmhand for two brothers, Martin and William (Pheba) Larsen. He entered Huron College in September 1937. He participated in football, track and music and supported himself by working in restaurants, private homes, and for the college. In 1939, Clarence joined Company “C”, 109th Engineer Regiment of the South Dakota National Guard. The regiment was federalized in November 1940 and in February 1941 was sent to Camp Claiborne, LA. Based on experience with light trucks with the Huron Delivery Service, Clarence volunteered for truck driver duty. Following the attack at Pearl Harbor, the 34th Division of which the 109th Engineers was a part was sent to Fort Dix, NJ. While at Fort Dix, Clarence transferred to the United States Air Corps. During flight training he was joined in marriage to Shirley Lavonne Dearborn, at Selma, AL, December 22, 1942. They resided in Selma until Clarence completed advanced flight training and received his wings and was commissioned a Second Lt. Clarence was transferred to Eglin Air Force Base, where he served as a tow pilot, gunnery instructor, and Squadron Commander. He and Shirley lived in Crestview, FL during the time of his service at Eglin AFB. A daughter, Lavonne Claire was born to them at the Eglin Air Force Hospital. Following the end of the war in 1945 Captain Williams was separated from the service.
He returned to Huron College and completed his Bachelors Degree in May 1946 and a son, Ronald Ray was born to Clarence and Shirley in July before he began his first teaching assignment at Sisseton, SD. Clarence was a classroom teacher and track coach. After summer graduate studies at the University of Colorado he transferred to South Dakota State University to complete his Masters Degree in Education and for 24 years was the high school principal. During that time he also began a new phase of military service by joining the U. S. Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a Deacon and Ordained Elder. As an educator he was a member of the South Dakota High School Principals Association, National High School Principals Association, American Vocational Association and the National Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools Commission. He was named an Outstanding High School Principal in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Kiwanis Club, serving as president and as Division Lt. Governor. He and Shirley retired from the Sisseton School and moved to Mobridge, SD in June 1982.
Clarence became active in several community activities, including the United Congregational Church, The Mobridge Senior Citizen Center, The Mobridge AARP Chapter, The Civic Concert Association, and the Mobridge Chamber of Commerce. Clarence, as a member of AARP served at several volunteer levels, including state legislative committee, assistant state director, state director and instructor for the AARP “55 Alive” Mature Driver Program. He was also a member of the Oahe Area Retired Teachers Unit.
Clarence’s favorite activities were boating, fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and reading. Clarence and Shirley have taken several memorable tours together, both in the U.S and abroad. He loved to have friends and former students come to fish and hunt with him. He was happiest when hunting with his son-in-law and his two grandsons.
Clarence is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Lavonne (John Salzsiedler) of Mobridge, SD; son Ron Williams of Fergus Falls, MN; two grandsons, John (Sheila) Salzsiedler, of Apple Valley, MN and James (Jeana) Salzsiedler of Mayer, MN; five great-grandchildren, Grace, Grant, Jake, Jordyn and Julia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
Memorials may be directed to United Congregational Church or the A. H. Brown Library Foundation.

Herbert Budack

SISSETON -- Herbert Budack, 86, Sisseton, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at a Sisseton hospital.

Funeral services are pending at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton.

Nelda Kriech

WAUBAY -- Funeral services for Nelda Estella Kriech, 71, Waubay, will be Monday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. in the Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster with the Rev. Neil Dean officiating. Music will be presented by organist LaVonne Prieb and soloist David Prieb.

Burial will be in the Webster Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Phillips, John Phillips, Tom Utne, Brian Stulken, Jerry Phillips and Danny Grant.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Nelda Kriech died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at a Webster hospital.

She was born Dec. 10, 1926, to Earl and Gladys (Minor) Phillips at Waubay. She attended school in Waubay and lived in Waubay until her marriage.

She married Vernon Kriech Feb. 12, 1956. The couple made their home and farmed southwest of Waubay in Central Point Township. Mr. Kriech died in 1973. She remained on the farm and farmed until 1983 when she retired from farming and moved to Waubay.

She was a member of the Waubay Community Alliance Church. She enjoyed making donuts and crocheting.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Jane, Don and Kasha and Virgil, all of Waubay; three daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and Keith Fuchs of Yankton, Judy and Raymond Sutten of Watertown and Bonnie and Jeff Hopkins of Waubay; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Delbert and Doris Phillips of Estherville, Iowa and Alfred and Betty Phillips of Summit; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bud Bryant of Wichita, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Isabelle Oswald

CLEAR LAKE -- Funeral services for Isabelle Oswald, 96, Clear Lake, were today (Dec.5) in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Joe Short officiating. Music was presented by soloist Brad Felix, song leader Fran Fritz and organist Clarice Uckert.

Burial was in the Grandview Cemetery at Gary. Pallbearers were Richard, Dan and James Parkhill, Mark Oswald and Stephen and Dwight Warkenthien.

The Crawford-Eng Funeral Home of Clear Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Isabelle Oswald died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at a Sioux Falls hospital.

She was born Dec. 7, 1901, to Richard and Agnes (Craney) Grigg at Clark. She attended grade school in Clark. She moved with her family to Watertown in order to attend Immaculate Conception School and was among the first graduating class of 1920. She attended Northern Teachers College in Aberdeen, Black Hills College in Rapid City, University of S.D. in Vermillion and Mount Marty College in Watertown. She taught in rural schools including Valley View, Watertown, Clark, Gary and Clear Lake. She also taught at the school for the blind in Gary and continued to teach at the school for the blind when it moved to Aberdeen. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit to prepare for teaching in the school for the visually impaired in Aberdeen.

She married Karl Oswald June 20, 1940, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Clark. The couple lived at Gary where they farmed and Isabelle taught school. Mr. Oswald died in 1975.

She served as a delegate for the state of South Dakota at the National Education Convention in St. Louis, Mo. She was active in the Soil Conservation projects in the area and the Association of Retarded Children (ARC). She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Gary. She was also active in the home extension clubs in Deuel County and served as chairman.

Survivors include a sister, Muriel Grigg of Watertown; and a sister-in-law, JoAnn Oswald of Watertown.

Dennis Jordan

Dennis Jordan, 48, Watertown, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at a local hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending with the Sogn-Messer Funeral Home.

Marion Peterson

ARLINGTON -- Marion E. Peterson, 79, Arlington, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at an Arlington care center.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington with the Revs. Loren Odland and Mark Svaren officiating.

Burial will be in the Arlington City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and Tuesday at the church prior to the services.

Marion Peterson was born Dec. 26, 1918, to Odin and Louise (Thompson) Peterson on a farm near Presho. He grew up in the area and attended grade school there. He graduated from Kennebec High School in 1937. He was baptized and confirmed in the Kennebec Lutheran Church. In 1941 he went to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked at Parker Appliance Co. In 1942 her married Rosetta Greathouse of Hetland. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 to serve in Europe with the 80th Infantry Division. Following his discharge in 1946 they moved to Arlington. He began work as a clerk in the Arlington Post Office in 1946, becoming postmaster in 1950. He retired in October 1976. Rosetta Peterson died in 1982.

He married Cecile (Braacken) Dahl Oct. 1, 1983. She died in 1994.

Throughout the years he was active in Trinity Lutheran Church, various community organizations and was associated with others in the Parkview Apartment project.

Survivors include a son, Sheldon of Sioux Falls; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sonja and James Whitehorn, Sharla and Dr. D.S. Coon and Sheryl and Robert Leekley, all of Petersburg, Alaska; five grandchildren; a step-daughter, Marsha (Dahl) Cold of Miami, Fla.; and a sister, Mildred Johns of Sioux City, Iowa.

Vernon Saulsbury

ORTONVILLE, Minn. -- Funeral services for Vernon Milton Saulsbury, 78, Ortonville, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Ortonville with the Rev. Richard Boehnke officiating. The organist will be Pat Kunz.

Burial will be in the Mound Cemetery at Ortonville. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Saulsbury's grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Bud Breen, Norbert Kelzer, Gary Reinke, Todd and Neal Jacobson and Dennis Rutland.

Visitation will be in the Larson Funeral Home at Ortonville today (Wednesday) from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Saulsbury died Monday morning, Feb. 15, 1999, in a Clinton nursing home.

He was born March 15, 1920, in Big Stone County to Verne and Minnie (Reinke) Saulsbury. He was baptized and confirmed and raised in the Clinton area and attended school in District 48. On Dec. 8, 1978, he married Lavonne Weaver at Webster, S.D. As a self employed carpenter and mason he worked in the Appleton and Ortonville areas.

Among his interests was music and he will be remembered for entertaining the elderly at the nursing home where he was known as "Vern the Vagabond." He also enjoyed all animals.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Darlys and Joe Clemenson of Princeton and Debbie Friedrichs of Spicer; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Lonnie of Florence, Ariz.; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Kay and Gary Jacobson of Morris; two stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Kenneth and LuAnn Weaver of Litchfield and Bruce Weaver of Crystal; two sisters, Leona Drake of Wisconsin and Vernis Hollingsworth of Chelan, Wash.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Herb and Helen of Benson, Kenneth and Gerda of Willmar and Duke and Evelyn of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Leona Saulsbury of Morris; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Donald Erickson

MILBANK -- Funeral services for Dorothy C. Johnson, 91, Milbank, formerly of South Shore, will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank with the Rev. Dennis L. Schultz officiating. She was the widow of Glenn C. Johnson.

Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank and Friday at the church one hour prior to the services. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 1:30 p.m. Friday to attend services.

Dorothy Johnson died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at a Milbank hospital.

Myrtle Larsen

OLDHAM -- Myrtle Lila Larsen, 85, rural Oldham, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in a Brookings hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church with the Rev. Solvieg Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be in the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home at Arlington Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and in the church Friday before the services.

Mrs. Larsen was born Aug. 11, 1913, on a farm near Arlington to Ole and Olga (Pederson) Larson Jr. She spent her early years and received her education in the rural Arlington area. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the ladies aid.

On Feb. 21, 1948, she married Ralph Larsen in the First Lutheran Church at Brookings. They farmed near Oldham until Mr. Larsen's death in 1988. She remained on the farm until the present time.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Beth of Spencer, Iowa, and Roger and Dawn of Lake Preston; four grandchildren; and a brother, Harry Larson of Arlington.
