Myrtle (Renning) Marskell
age 96 of Long Beach, California, formerly of Kadoka, died August 28, 2007, in Long Beach, California.
Myrtle Renning was born July 17, 1911, in South Creek, South Dakota, the daughter of Andrew and Katie (Nelson) Renning, Norwegian immigrants, who homesteaded there in the early 1900s. Myrtle was one of nine children and grew up in the farming community, completing her high school education in Redfield while learning the printing trade. She worked as a printer in Philip and moved to Los Angeles in 1939 where she worked at the Herald Examiner.
She was united in marriage to Arthur Whitney in 1940. She resumed her printing career in 1947, working thirty years at the Independent Press Telegram until her retirement in 1977.
Myrtle's interests included traveling, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. She was active in the Sons of Norway and was a docent at Rancho Los Alamitos until shortly before her death.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four children, Art Whitney of Long Beach, Pat Lampe of Huntington Beach, Bob Whitney of Escondido, Ruth DeVoogd of Highlands Ranch, CO; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her stepchildren, Linda Savage, Lee, Jimmy and David Marskell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 24, 2008 at the South Creek cemetery, north of Kadoka.

Lynda B. Anderson
age 91 of Midland, South Dakota, died March 14, 2004, at the Philip Nursing Home.
Lynda B. Reinschmidt was born June 23, 1912 on her parents’ homestead south of Midland, the daughter of Wilhelm and Freidericka (Rothenberger) Reinschmidt. As a child she moved with her family into Midland where she grew up and received her education. After graduating from Midland High School, she did domestic work for various people in the Pierre area.
Lynda was united in marriage to Bennie Anderson on September 13, 1937 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in Midland. After her two daughters were in school, she worked as a cook at a local restaurant and later as a clerk in a grocery store until retiring in early 1974.
Her husband Bennie preceded her in death on August 19, 1963. Lynda continued to reside in Midland until July of 1996. Due to health reasons, she moved into the Philip Nursing Home in December 1996, where she has since resided.
Lynda attended the Open Bible Church of Midland. She was a member of the Midland Senior Citizens, and the Midland Birthday Club. She served as Midland Town Clerk for many years, and belonged several years to the New Century Club.
Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters Leilani Hand and her husband Tom of Midland, and Shari Kaye Anderson of Pierre; three grandchildren Byron Hand and his wife Tracey of Midland, Duane Hand and his wife Annette of Midland, and Bradley Hand and his wife Beth of Mitchell; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Lynda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Alvin and Walter Reinschmidt; and one sister Clara Root.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, at the Open Bible Church in Midland, with Pastor Dan Carlson officiating.
Interment was in the Midland cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Maxine Anderson
age 81 of Rapid City, formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died March 31, 2003, at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Margaret Maxine (Griffin) Anderson was born June 8, 1921 to Fred and Ethel (Marrington) Griffin in Philip, SD. She joined an older brother Clifford.
Following the untimely death of her mother, at the age of two, Maxine was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Marrington. She attended rural Haakon county schools and Pierre High School.
Maxine was united in marriage to Arthur Hutchinson in October, 1940. A daughter, Merle Ann, was born to this union in Ohio, where Maxine resided until 1948. In February 1950, Maxine married Calvin Hoag, who adopted Merle Ann, and a son, Fred, was born to this family in 1959. They made their home in Philip, SD. While raising her children, Maxine worked as a telephone operator and a bookkeeper. She was also an accomplished seamstress and talented crafter for many years. Visible in her family by her nurturing, is her love of music, creativity and hospitality. Six years ago, due to failing health, Maxine moved to Wesleyen Health Care Center in Rapid City, SD. She soon became a favorite resident, grandma, and friend.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Merle Ann Elshere-Haveman and her husband Mel of Black Hawk, SD; her son, Fred Hoag and his wife Claudette of Philip; seven grandchildren, Steven Elshere of Bloomington, Illinois; Laura Sever and her husband Jeff of Rapid City, SD; Julie Furchner and her husband Scott of Ft. Pierre, SD; Jennifer Kennedy and her husband Doug of Las Vegas, Nevada; Josh Hoag and Jeremy Hoag of Aberdeen, SD; and Erick Hoag of Philip; nine great-grandchildren; Tyler, Trent, and Taryn Sever; Dustin and Jordan Cazier; Trina Elshere; Douglas Kennedy, Jr.; Morgan and Ethan Hoag; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Charles A. Anderson, Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her brother; and the fathers of her two children.
Funeral services for M. Maxine Anderson age 81 of Rapid City and formerly of Philip were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday April 5, 2003 at the United Church in Philip with Pastor Al Brucklacher officiating.
Maxine died late Monday evening at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City, SD.
Visitation was held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Philip and one hour before the services at the church on Saturday.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery of Philip.
A memorial is established.

Paul Anderson
age 94 of Murdo, South Dakota, died November 4, 2009, St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre.
Paul A. Anderson was born January 28, 1915, at rural Draper, South Dakota, the son of Peter and Ida (Kaasa) Anderson. He grew up on a farm north of Draper in Jones County, attended Spears School for eight years, and graduated from Murdo High School in 1932. He farmed several years with his dad and brother, Walter, before going to work for the State Highway in 1940. In 1947, he joined Francis Plumbing and Ditching company, later becoming a partner. In 1967 he became the Water Superintendent for the City of Murdo, retiring from that position in 1978.
On June 11, 1943, Paul was united in marriage to Marjorie Mills in the Lutheran parsonage at Presho, South Dakota. They have made their home in Murdo since then and operated the Anderson Motel after his retirement until 1994.
Paul was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church, Murdo School Board member for 15 years, a volunteer fireman for 50 years, and a Lions Club member since 1965. In 1983, he wrote his lifetime recollections, “As I Remember It”.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie of Murdo; two sons Walter Anderson and his wife Dina of Rapid City, and Jim Anderson and his wife Joan of Eureka; one daughter Linda Nill and her husband Ed of Pierre; two grandchildren Sarah Anderson of Eureka, and Rob Nill and his wife Beth of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; one great-grandchild Owen Nill, of Beaver Dam; two sister-in-laws Dorothy Ellis of Chamberlain, South Dakota, and Winona Cerveny of Sacramento, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Walter and George Anderson; and four sisters Edna Liffengren, Sally Orr, Esther Kruse, and Irene Andersen.
Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. CST on Friday, November 6, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. CST Saturday, November 7, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, with Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.
Interment was in the Murdo cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to benefit the Jones county Seniors for Service and the Messiah Lutheran Church.

Randy Spencer Anderson
age 45 of Wall, South Dakota, died October 5, 2005, at the Fountain Springs Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Randy Anderson was born October 19, 1959, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son Donald and Betty Jeane (Kulesza) Anderson.
Randy loved life and everyone he knew. He has been an inspiration to his family and those fortunate enough to have known him. He especially loved the people in Wall and Wasta where he grew up and lived. Randy was a true outdoorsman with a passion for hunting, fishing, trapping, and enjoying what God and mother nature provided. He laughed more than most and found joy and pleasure in nearly everything. Though his last years were more difficult than many of us could have endured, Randy did it with remarkable grace and dignity, continuing to give more than he received. His positive attitude was contagious and we loved him more than words can describe. He lived life to the fullest. Well done Randy, well done.
Randy is survived by his mother and father, three brothers Jerry Anderson of Pinedale, Wyoming, Steve Anderson of Woodinville, Washington, and Darel Anderson of Wall; aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many good friends all of whom Randy loved dearly.
A memorial service was held for Randy on Monday the 10th of October at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Brad Kattelmann officiating. Everyone is welcome to the service and the reception following the service.
Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall is in charge of arrangements.

Elaine Williams, age 73, of Philip, died Friday evening, September 30, 2005 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Elaine Pfeifer was born June 14, 1932, in Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Hanson) Pfeifer.
She grew up and received her education in the Philip area, attending country schools and graduating from Philip High School in 1950.
Elaine was united in marriage to James R. Williams on August 29, 1950 in Philip. While Jim was in the Korean War, Elaine lived in Philip and worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store and later at the REA office. When Jim returned from the service, they made their home in the Milesville area until 1980, when they moved to Philip, where they have since resided.
While in Milesville, Elaine was a member of the Milesville Women's Club, Four-Table Bridge Club, St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society, and was a 4-H leader for many years.
After moving to Philip, Elaine worked at Baker's Four Seasons store, and also was the Circuit Court Bailiff.
Elaine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Evening Guild, the Badlands Quilters, the American Legion Auxiliary, CCD Coordinator, and religion teacher.
She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, cooking, gardening, dancing, and sitting on the porch.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband Jim Williams of Philip; two daughters Delia Harty and her husband Hugh of Philip, and Jane Aasby and her husband Tom of Rapid City; a son, Peter Williams of Ellicott, Colorado; three grandchildren, Moneik Harty of Black Hawk, Jim and Ed Harty of Piedmont; five brothers, George Pfeifer and his wife Donna of St. Maries, Idaho, Larry Pfeifer and his wife Helen of Philip, Leo Pfeifer and his wife Janet of Lynnwood, Washington, Roy Pfeifer and his wife Margaret of Philip, and Robert Pfeifer of Philip; a sister Ella Mae Ketchum of Washington; a sister-in-law Violet Pfeifer of Highmore; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Melvin Pfeifer.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Robert L. Anderson
age 62 of Gann Valley, South Dakota, died December 20, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Robert L. Anderson was born June 19, 1939 in Miller, South Dakota, the son of Lew and Inez (Appleby) Anderson. He grew up on a farm northwest of Gann Valley. He attended rural school in the Gann Valley area. He later graduated from agricultural school in Brookings, South Dakota.
He enlisted in the United States Army on November 18, 1960. After his honorable discharge on August 19, 1963, he returned to Gann Valley. He worked as a crane operator on bridge construction for the Interstate-90 project throughout South Dakota.
He was united in marriage to Verda Pinney on June 24, 1967 in Pierre, South Dakota. To this union was born two sons, Robert Louis Anderson, Jr. and Curt Anderson.
He continued to work road construction until 1972, when they moved to Big Stone City, South Dakota where he was a crane operator at the power plant.
In 1974 they returned to the family farm northwest of Gann Valley which he continued to operate until the time of his death.
Robert was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. of Gann Valley.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Curt Anderson of Kadoka; three grandchildren, Chris, Misti, and Bobby Anderson; three sisters, Pat Oakley of Mitchell; Norma Moser of Ree Heights and Virginia Kelsey of Wessington, SD; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son Robert L. Anderson, Jr. and his parents.
Visitation was held on Thursday December 27, 2001 at the First Congregational Church in Gann Valley from 11:00 a.m. CST until service time.
Funeral Services for Robert L. Anderson age 62, of Gann Valley, SD were held 1:00 p.m. CST Thursday December 27, 2001 at the First Congregational Church in Gann Valley, with Pastor Gaylon Van Zee officiating.
Interment was held 1:00 p.m. MST Friday, December 28, 2001 at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with Military Honors provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Shirley Anderson
age 94 of Kadoka, South Dakota, died October 6, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Shirley J. Buum was born March 1, 1915, at White River, South Dakota, the daughter of Christian and Sophia (Wegner) Buum. She grew up and received her education in White River. Shirley married Clifford Larson in 1943, and to this union three children were born. They made their home in Wood, South Dakota.
Shirley married Alfred G. Anderson in 1965. They resided in Wood, Rapid City and Kadoka. They enjoyed restoring antique furniture until their retirement. Shirley was involved for many years in the Ladies Circle and the Quilting group of Concordia Lutheran Church. She is fondly remembered for her great cooking, baking, letter writing and her gentle kindness and love for her children and grandchildren.
Her husband Al preceded her in death on November 14, 1983. She continued to reside at the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka, before moving to Rapid City with her son Clarence. In 2004, she moved into the Kadoka Care Center where she has since resided.
Grateful for having shared her life include two daughters Donna Burdick of Arlington, Washington, Peggy Good Shield (Cecil Long) of Flandreau South Dakota; her son Clarence Larson (Susan) of Rapid City; her grandchildren Steve Schmidt of Marysville, WA, Gary and Matt Schmidt of Coos Bay, OR, Jennifer, Kendra and Kristin Larson of Rapid City, JP Good Shield of Sioux Falls, SD, Chuck Good Shield of Pierre, SD Cheryl Good Shield of Mission, SD, Brent Good Shield of Salt Lake City, UT and Jamie Long of Oklahoma. She is also survived by several great and great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Al, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister Gertrude Woodard of Long Valley/Kadoka, SD and two brothers Joe Buum of White River, SD, Orin Buum of Rapid City, SD and her granddaughter Donna Mae Good Shield also of Rapid City, SD.
Visitation was held one hour preceding the services at the church.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 10th, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Art Weitschat officiating.
Interment was held 2:15 p.m. CDT at the White River cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Meals on Wheels Program in Rapid City. Memorials may be sent to: Clarence Larson, 1603 N. 7th St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Thelma Anderson
age 88 of Reno, Nevada, formerly of Midland, SD, died October 25, 2008, at the Manor Care in Reno.
She was born March 13, 1920 in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Henry and Dena Bertelson Martin. She graduated from Midland High School, and spent several years ranching and breaking horses. Thelma jumped horses in shows throughout the country winning many competitions.
She was united in marriage to Curtis Seward Anderson in 1957. They spent many happy years with daughters Deanna and Faye, ranching in the Midland area.
During the 60’s they moved to a farm in northern Minnesota. There Thelma began writing for gardening magazines and was one of the first pioneers of organic gardening and environmental issues. As a leader of the local 4-H club she was a great role model for many young people, teaching them how to follow their dreams and believe in themselves.
When she and Curt and their daughters moved back to Midland, she worked as a bookkeeper and writer publishing various articles and short stories. Later, she published two very successful autobiographies about her life: Where Coyotes Howl and Gumbo Lilies, along with four early adolescent novels.
She enjoyed tutoring Cambodian refugees and donated many, many hours, not only to helping them with their English speaking abilities, but offering them the spirit of friendship as well. Thelma attended the Lutheran Church most of her life and believed in living the principles taught by Christ’s example.
In later years, she was very active in Senior Olympics bringing home gold and silver medals in sports as varied as basketball and horseshoes. Thelma always enjoyed the outdoors and any kind of competitive sport.
During the last four years of her life, Thelma spent time between Riverton, Utah where she lived with her daughter Faye Anderson and Faye’s husband, Doug Hasbrouck, and Reno, Nevada where she lived with her daughter, Deanna Peters. In Reno she also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Kyle and December Peters.
Survivors include two daughters Faye Anderson of Riverton, Utah, and Deanna Peters of Reno, Nevada; two grandchildren Kyle and December Peters of Reno; one brother Albert "Fuzz" Martin and his wife Bonnie of Faith; one sister Mickey Woitte and her husband Shorty of Midland; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Curt Anderson; her parents; two brothers Herb and Hank Martin; and one sister Juliana Sanford.
Visitation was held 2-5 p.m. on Friday, October 31, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment will be in the Midland cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Mary J. Ankrum
age 73 of Philip, South Dakota, died April 1, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Mary Jean Hart was born March 3, 1932 in Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of George W. and Margaret (Hansen) Hart. She grew up and received her education in Philip, graduating from Philip High School in 1950.
Mary was united in marriage to Lester E. "Les" Ankrum on August 4, 1950 in Philip, South Dakota. In 1951, Mary took the position as clerk for the Haakon County Treasurer’s Office. Later she moved to Deputy Treasurer and in 1962 she was elected Haakon County Treasurer.
Her husband Les Ankrum preceded her in death on October 19, 1987.
She continued to work as Treasurer of Haakon County until retiring in 1997, after forty-five years of service. After retiring, she continued to reside in Philip.
Mary was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Evening Guild. She enjoyed playing cards and was involved in many card groups.
Grateful for having shared her life include two daughters, Patti Rhodes and her husband Jerry of Philip, and Tina Noteboom and her husband Mike of Philip; eight grandchildren; Jason Rhodes, Wade Rhodes, Justin Rhodes, Brady Rhodes, Jerry Rhodes, Jr., Jeremy Noteboom, Travis Noteboom, and April Noteboom; nine great-grandchildren; a brother George Hart and his wife Barb of Thornton, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Les, Mary was preceded in death by a brother Francis Hart; a sister Eileen Hoag, and her twin sister Margaret Jean Hart as a child.
A memorial is established.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2005 with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Ron Garry as celebrant, and Father Tim Hoag as con-celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.

Ellen M. Arends
age 95 of Kadoka, South Dakota, formerly of Philip and Rapid City, died December 27, 2003, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Ellen M. Chrans was born November 2, 1908 at Havana, Illinois, the daughter of Alfred T. and Jenna (Linderman) Chrans. As a child she moved with her parents to a homestead in the Kennebec and Reliance, South Dakota area. She grew up on the homestead and attended rural school in the community.
As a young lady she worked for various ranchers in that community as well as the Faith, Dupree, and Isabel areas.
Ellen was united in marriage to John E. Arends on October 28, 1930 at Fairpoint, South Dakota. They made their home on a farm near Enning, South Dakota.
In 1937 her husband began working as a superintendent for the WPA program and they lived in various places in South Dakota. He was superintendent on the Lake Waggoner Dam Project north of Philip. In the mid 1940’s the family moved to Rapid City. While in Rapid City, Ellen worked at the Holiday Inn for seven years.
After her husband’s death on November 13, 1977, Ellen continued to reside in Rapid City until moving to Philip in 1980, where she resided until moving into the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka in October 2001. Due to health reasons, Ellen moved into the Kadoka Care Center in September 2003.
Ellen was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church of Kadoka, a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Evening Guild in Philip, and a former member of St. Therese of the Little Flower Catholic Church and St. Veronica’s Club in Rapid City.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son John P. Arends and his wife Jan of Ft. Collins, Colorado; three daughters Virginia Novitsky and her husband Edward of Orlando, Florida, Jo Anne Stilwell and her husband Jerry of Kadoka, and Barbara Herr and her husband Del of Peosta, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one brother Theodore Chrans and his wife Esther of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; three sisters Florence Buck and her husband Robert of Simla, Colorado, Frances Farrell of Redding, California, and Berniece Kincaid of Simla, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband John, Ellen was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Ellen Rogers; two grandsons Steven Rogers and Johnny Novitsky; two granddaughters Barbara Novitsky and Jenna Stilwell; two great-granddaughters Katie and Cheryl Brasel; a son-in-law Frank Rogers; her parents; eight brothers Robert, Roy, Dale, Don, Earl, Lyle, Clarence, and Del Chrans; and two sisters Gladys Steves and Bonnie Jean Nibe.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29 with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, at the church with Father Bob Baden as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Gene Heckathorne.
Interment was 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.
A memorial is established.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.
