Rebecca Woolridge

Rebecca Marie Woolridge, Aberdeen, died of natural causes on February 23, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. Her funeral was held February 27 at Miller-Hueble Funeral Home, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Joel Winckler officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Rebecca Marie Rozelle was born October 13, 1961 at Aberdeen to Vernon and Myrna (Van Dover) Rozelle. She was raised and educated in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1979. After graduation she worked at Pizza Hut, Bethesda Home of Aberdeen, and Helen’s California Kitchen. She married William Woolridge on July 2, 1984 in Aberdeen. The continued to make Aberdeen their home until the time of her death.

She enjoyed reading, drawing, fishing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, William Woolridge; her father and step mother, Vernon and Carol Rozelle; her mother, Myrna Rozelle; and maternal grandmother, Dorothy Van Dover, all of Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Desiree Marie, paternal grandparents, and maternal grandfather.

Casketbearers were Robert Woolridge, Stacey Hundstad, Stanton Hundstad, Rick Grieben, Keith Schile and Sig Flagvedt.

Jude Borgesen was the organist and Susan Van Dover was the soloist.

Kenneth Moffitt

Kenneth Moffitt, 85, Spokane, Wash., died August 11, 1998. A memorial service was held at the Rockwood Manor Retirement Center on August 14. Heritage Funeral Home, Spokane, was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Moffitt was born February 7, 1913, raised and schooled in Groton, with his two brothers. He attended Huron College and married Lola Crawford on April 19, 1942 in Aberdeen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning rank of Master Sergeant and was stationed in Calcutta, India. After the war he worked for a Harper McGee Wholesale Company as a representative to the dealer. Ken loved music, from band to classical, played the piano and was the pipe organist at his home town church. He enjoyed sports, reading and traveling - visiting India, Canada, Mexico, Asia and Japan, and he lived in five other states before making Spokane his home for over 40 years. He took pride in volunteering with the Spokane Food Bank and served as Chairman of the Board. He also worked with the Meals on Wheels program and served as President of the Rockwood Manor Residents’ Council.

He is survived by his wife, Lola, and step granddaughter, Deborah Melchi.

Harvey Meyer

Harvey Meyer, 87, Aberdeen, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

The funeral was held April 13 at the First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen with the Rev. Joel Winckler officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Miller-Huebl Funeral Home.

Harvey Meyer was born on May 16, 1910 to Edward and Anna (Wunderlich) Meyer near Hickman, Neb. He came with his parents and they homesteaded west of the Frederick area. This is the area where he was raised and educated. He helped on his parent’s farm and on February 18, 1933 he married Louise Bain in Aberdeen. They farmed west of Frederick until 1975 and they retired at that time. They traveled and lived in Apache Junction, Ariz., during the winters and at Mina Lake in the summers. They moved into the Parkside Apartments in Aberdeen in 1994. She died on May 5, 1996. He continued to make Aberdeen his home following her death.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and he enjoyed playing cards and visiting.

He is survived by one daughter, Jean (Paul) Lingor, Aberdeen, and one son, Dwight (Louise) Meyer, Manhasset, N.Y.; four brothers, Clinton Meyer, Redfield, Walter Meyer, Pensacola, Fla., Delton Meyer, San Diego, Calif., and Ervin Meyer of Denver; two sisters, Mildred Neff, Roseburg, Ore., and Evelyn Von Christierson, Carmel, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, one brother and one sister.

Casketbearers were Loel Lapka, Brian Bain, Mearl Schanzenbach, Lauren Harrison, Joe Geditz and Wesley Stern.

Terry Kones was the organist, Cami Connell, the pianist and Irene Mickelson was the soloist. Cal Engel was the usher.

Christan Allan McKiver

Christan Allan McKiver, infant son of Leah A. Leidholdt and Steve A. McKiver of Groton, was born and died April 29, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen.

There was a private family service with burial at Riverside cemetery under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Christan is survived by his parents of Groton; paternal grandparents, Jacky D. McKiver and Renee McKiver, both of Groton; maternal grandfather, Robert W. Leidholdt, Groton; paternal great-grandmother, Marjorie McKiver, Groton, and maternal great-grandparents, Don and Rosemary Hauck, Watertown.

Leonard Mathias Maunu

Leonard Mathias Maunu, 93, died Wednesday, March 3, 1998 at Good Shepherd Care Center in Peoria, Ariz., where he had resided since 1990.

Graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Ervin Langholz at Sunland Memorial Park and Mortuary in Sun City, Ariz. Memorial services will be held at American Lutheran Church in Sun City at a later date.

Leonard Mathias Maunu was born September 30, 1904 in a sod house on his parent’s homestead near Hecla to Gustaf and Susanna (Martilla) Maunu. He graduated from Hecla High School in 1924. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from South Dakota State, Brookings, in 1928, and a Masters Degree in Education from Marquette University in February, 1949. Upon graduation in 1928, he was employed by Briggs Stratton Corporation as a draftsman and design engineer for ten years. He taught mechanical drafting at Milwaukee vocational and adult schools. He taught tool and die and machinist apprentices for 20 years. During this period he attended night classes to obtain his Masters degree. He later taught mechanical tech for 15 years at Milwaukee Institute of Technology. The American Machinist Magazine has published his ideas. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin, a member of Great Books Foundation, and an active member of Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.

Leonard married Anna Susanna (Ann) Hasti in Cokato, Minn., on November 26, 1932. She died in November, 1977. They enjoyed world-wide traveling. His hobbies included gardening, silver craft, lawn bowling and home workshop.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and nine brothers.

Memorials may be sent to Martin Luther School, 1830 Glenrosa Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85015.

He has resided in Sun City, Ariz., since 1974 after retiring. He was a charter member of the American Lutheran Church and a member of the Scandinavian Club.

Geraldine V. Giles

Geraldine V. Giles, 76, Forbes, and formerly of Frederick, died Thursday, April 9, 1998 at her home in Forbes. Local arrangements were with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Funeral arrangements in Renton, Wash., were with the Faull-Stokes Mortuary. Burial was in the Masonic Memorial Park at Tumwater, Wash.

Geraldine V. Sheehy was born October 17, 1921 at Tama, Iowa, to William and Effie (Applegate) Sheehy. She attended school at Tama, Iowa, and as a small child the family moved to Olympia, Wash., where she graduated from high school. She then attended the University of Washington at Seattle and after four years graduated. She was the owner and operator of three flower shops in the Olympia area. She married Virgil A. Rapp at Renton in 1985. They moved to Frederick in 1995 and then moved to Forbes in 1996 where she lived at the time of her death.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil A. Rapp, Forbes; one step-daughter, Janice Poage, Edmonds, Wash.; and one half-brother, Elmer Giles, Seattle.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one step-son, Norman Rapp.

Glen M. Geary

The funeral for Glen M. Geary, 77, of Conde, was held January 24 in St. John’s Catholic Church, Conde. The Rev. Matthew Vazhappily and the Rev. Joseph Vogel officiated. Burial was in the Conde Catholic cemetery with military gravestone rites by Donald A. Lewis, American Legion Post No. 148 of Conde. Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton was in charge of arrangements.

He died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen.

Glen Mitchell Geary was born May 22, 1920 to William A. and Ella (Filk) Geary in Conde. He attended rural elementary school. He graduated from Conde High School in 1938. Before entering the service, he took training at a radio school in Grand Forks. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force Signal Corps during World War II. He was stationed in Tampa, Fla., and Miami Beach, Fla. He was discharged from the service and returned to Conde. He farmed with his father.

He married Dolores M. Bawek on September 24, 1947, in Conde. The made their home in Conde. He continued to farm with his father until he took over the management of the farm. He retired from farming in 1990. They continued to live in Conde. He had been a resident of Colonial Manor in Groton since May 1997.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Conde, the Donald A. Lewis American Legion Post No. 148 of Conde, the Conde Civic Development Association and the Conde Senior Citizens. He loved farming and playing cards was a favorite pastime. He was a devoted father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of Conde; seven sons, Terrence Geary, Houston, Gail (Connie) Geary, Pasadena, Texas, Wayne (Jill) Geary, Fergus Falls, Minn., Bruce (Cindy) Geary and Kent (Susanne) Geary, both of Conde, Randy Geary, Mandan, N.D., and Brian (Erin) Geary, Yankton; two daughters, Glenna (Larry) Remington, Groton, and Angela (Duane) Dalton, Sioux Falls; two brothers, Willard Geary, Plymouth, Minn., and Donald Geary, Bella Vista, Ark; one sister, Margaret Smith, Brookings; 32 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.

Casketbearers were Ryan Remington, Derrek Geary, Troy Geary, Phillip Remington, Brookes Geary and Jacob Bawek.

The offertory gifts were presented by Tara, Zachary and Mandy Geary and Kelly, Justin and Nathan Dalton.

Aune M. Gayman

The funeral for Aune M. Gayman, 91, of Coalinga, Calif., and formerly of Frederick, was held July 21 at the Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale, with the Rev. Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Burial was in the Ellendale City cemetery with Carlsen-Holte Funeral Home of Ellendale in charge of arrangements.

She died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Coalinga Regional Medical Center, Coalinga, Calif.

Aune Mathilda Kotila was born November 10, 1906 in Savo Township near Frederick to Johan Fredrik and Josefiina Hovila Kotila. This is were she grew up and attended rural school and Frederick public school. Aune received her teaching certificate from the Normal and Industrial College at Ellendale. She taught school for a number of years in North and South Dakota. In the 1930’s she moved to Chicago to attend cosmetology school. Aune was a hair dresser for a number of years. She married Lloyd Gayman at Chicago on November 19, 1941 and they made their home in Brewster, Ohio. Lloyd’s work as a school teacher took them to Nogales, Ariz., and Coalinga, Calif. Aune retired from beauty work just a few years ago.

Aune was recently honored as a 50 year member of the California State Womens Club. She contributed much leadership to the General Federated Women’s Clubs of Arizona and California, past president (1958-1960) of the Fresno District Federated Women’s Club, member of Coalinga Rockhound’s Society, Coalinga Hospital Guild, AARP, Ellendale Historical Society, the Presbyterian Church in Coalinga where she had served as a Deacon and the Presbyterian Women.

Aune and Lloyd traveled extensively, having covered all of North America, Hawaii, U. S. Virgin Islands and a tour of Europe that included Finland.

She enjoyed Lapidary and crafts and photography.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, one brother, Lauri (Marie) Kotila of Frederick; three sisters, Ruth Mallach and Signe Erickson, both of Berkeley, Calif., and Arlene Koski of Hayward, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Casketbearers were Harold Ladd, Stanley Halonen, Stanley Geranen, Raymond Mikkonen, Merlon Kotila and Edgar Luoma.

The organist was Marie Schlosser and soloist was Jack Smith.

Ivan W. James

Ivan W. James, 71, of Houghton, died Sunday, September 27, 1998 at his home. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 1, at the Columbia Congregational Church, Columbia, with the Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be at the Houghton cemetery under the directions of the Paetznick-Garness Funeral Home, Groton.

Ivan James was born on September 10, 1927 to R. Ward and Inez (Wright) James at Britton. He attended country school and later attended high school in Columbia.

He married Evelyn Cole on November 1, 1945 at Aberdeen. Following their marriage they farmed in the Houghton area all their lives. He retired in 1991 and spent his winters in Arizona. He greatly enjoyed traveling around the world.

He was a member of the Houghton Congregational Church, the Masonic Lodge at Claremont and the Elks Lodge of Aberdeen.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, Houghton; one son, Ronald (Harmony) James, Phoenix; one daughter, Bobby Ann (Sheldon) Kangas, O’Neill, Neb.; one sister, Cleo Joyce (Delbert) Eddy, Mina Lake; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Honorary casketbearers will be Donald Miller Sr., John Knecht, Lowell Drooz, Jerome Leslie, Harvey Bohling, Allen Mettler and Ted Winburn.

Active casketbearers will be Terry Haaland, John Freeland, Roy Wilkins, Bill James, Doug Hinrichs, Bill McKiver and Lester James.

Ushers will be Kenneth Webb and Bruce Repp. Rhea Karlen will be the organist.

Dwayne L. James

Dwayne L. James, 67, Bath, died September 3, 1998 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral was held September 8 at Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58, Columbia. The Rev. Gerald Rife officiated and burial followed at Lakeview cemetery, Columbia, under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen. There were military graveside rites by the Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 from Columbia.

Dwayne was born on January 15, 1931 to David and Mildred (Weismantel) James at Britton. He lived in the Columbia, Houghton, and Bath area all his life. He was educated at the Everson and Davis Township Schools. He worked at Hub City Livestock Sales Barn for a time period. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., in 1953 and following his honorable discharge in 1955, returned to the Columbia area. He attended an agriculture school in Groton. He was involved in grain and livestock farming with his father and his brother, Derald, throughout his life. His whole life revolved around farming.

He was a member of the Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 of Columbia.

He is survived by his father, David James, of Bath; his brother, Derald (Pat) James, of Bath, and his sister, Darlys Kampa, of Groton.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and a sister.

Honorary casketbearers were the Roy L. Hall American Legion Post #58 of Columbia.

Active casketbearers were nieces and nephews: David Kampa, Dwight Kampa, Darwin Kampa, Derwin Kampa, Michael Kampa, Darlyne Daly, Brenda Johnson, Barbara Everson and Bridget Lake.

Ushers were Doug Daly, Allen Johnson, Pat Everson and John Lake.
