Nellie V. Schroeder
Nellie V. Schroeder, 77, Rapid City, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at a Rapid City nursing home.
Her funeral was held July 13, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City with the Rev. Preston Brown officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City.
She was born the daughter of William Bryan and Roxie May (Briscoe) Henning on August 14, 1920 in Hecla, where her parents farmed. Nellie attended elementary and high school at Hecla. She was united in marriage to Jack Schroeder on November 11, 1937. They farmed and raised livestock in the Hecla area.
Nellie managed the Herther Mercantile store in Hecla during the later 1950’s and later worked for Rapid Chevrolet in Rapid City and the Courtesy Ford Motor Company in Miami, Fla. She retired in 1979 and moved back to Rapid City.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Bretsch and Bev Schneider, both of Rapid City; two sons, Al (Dottie) Schroeder, Rapid City, and Cliff (Sharon) Schroeder, Hecla; a sister, Wilma Lloyd, Hecla; a step brother, Virgil Dunsmore, Imperial Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and a special friend, Bill Hartford.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two step mothers and four half brothers.
Her whole world revolved around her family, who lover her fondly and will miss her dearly.
A memorial has been established.
Stanley I. Scott
The funeral service for Stanley I. Scott, 66, of rural Hecla, will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, 1998 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hecla, with the Rev. Deborah R. Geelsdottir officiating. Burial will be in the Hecla cemetery under the direction of the Franzen-Price Funeral Chapel of Hecla.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 7, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel in Hecla, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Friday.
He died Sunday, May 3, at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen.
Stanley Ivan Scott was born on a farm in Portage Township of Brown County, south of Hecla, to Alba and Mary (Brady) Scott on March 13, 1932. He attended Walker County School and graduated from Hecla High School in 1950. He married
Carol Ann Dye at Ellendale on June 3, 1961. They made their home near Hecla where he farmed until his recent retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and numerous outdoor gardening activities.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hecla, where he had served on the church council numerous times. He was a member of the Hecla School Board where he had served since the reorganization in the mid 1970’s. He served on the board for the South East Multi-District Vocational Center in Oakes. He was instrumental in organizing the Hecla Jaycee’s program and served as the charter president. He also served and presided over many other township and local activity boards.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Hecla; a daughter, Debbie Scott, Sioux Falls; two sons, Alan (Laura) Scott, Britton; Billy Scott, Spring Park, Minn.; two grandsons, Tye and Damon Scott, Britton; two brothers, Maurice (Darlene) Scott, Hecla, and Floyd (Lavonne) Scott, Renton, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Casketbearers will be Don Swearingen, Sioux Falls; Earl Brady, Oakes; Wally Nelson, Aberdeen; Leroy Bagley, Dean Kutter, Monte Nipp, Merlyn Elsen and Marvin Cowley, all of Hecla.
Karla Karst will be the soloist and Janet Elsen will be the organist.
Fred Spilloway
The funeral for Fred Spilloway, 106, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Groton, was held Monday at the Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton. The Rev. William Duncan officiated. Burial was in the Groton Union cemetery.
He died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Covington Heights Health Care Center in Sioux Falls.
Fred Spilloway was born March 14, 1892, in Odessa, Russia, to Helko and Vera (Chermiskhauk) Spilloway. As a young child, he moved with his family to Gackle, N.D. As a young man, he homesteaded in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. While in Canada, he served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force from June through December 1918. He then returned to the United States.
He married
Martha Moos on September 10, 1925, at Gackle. They made their home in the Langford and Pierpont area. In 1956, they moved to Groton. He was a resident of Colonial Manor in Groton, and then the Aberdeen Living Center for two years. He had lived at Covington Heights since 1995.
Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Olson of Langford, Violet Olson of Andover, Vera (Norval) Goehring of Hitchcock, and Marge Neumann of Mitchell; 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, three grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.
Casketbearers included Paul Neumann, Scott Neumann, Doug Neumann, Todd Goehring, Tadd Goehring and Dan Hepper.
Carl O. Strom
The funeral for Carl O. Strom, 90, Groton, was held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the United Methodist Church in Groton. The Rev. Emil Eberhart officiated.
Burial followed in the Groton Union cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton, in charge of arrangements.
He died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Colonial Manor in Groton.
Carl Oliver Strom was born September 28, 1907 in Hobart, Ind., to Charles A. and Hulda (Johnson) Strom. His family farmed in the Gary area until 1910 when they moved to the James Farm northeast of Ferney. Carl attended Ferney school. Following the death of his father, he helped his mother and brothers run a dairy farm near Groton. He especially enjoyed working with horses.
He married
Ethel Matthews on September 29, 1936 in Aberdeen and continued to farm and raise cattle in the Groton area. Carl was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on its board. He was East Hanson Township clerk and also served on the school board.
Carl retired in 1966 and he and Ethel moved to Groton, but he continued to help his sons on the farm for another 20 years. Due to Ethel’s failing health, they moved back to the farm with Dick and Sandy in 1990. Carl lived there until he went to Colonial Manor in December 1995 where he remained until his death.
Carl is survived by three sons of Groton, Luverne (Carol), their children, Tom, Algeria, Africa, Dwight (Michele), Groton, Crystal (Doug) Sippel, Groton; Charles (Betty), their children, Charlene (Bruce) Telkamp, Miller, Cindy (Ron) Bergman, Brookings, Dale, Aberdeen; Richard (Sandy), their children, Rich (Mary), Sioux Falls, Terri (Brian) Schuring, Groton, Joanna, Aurora, Colo.; one daughter, Bernyce (Bob) Resset, Faribault, Minn., their children, John (Sheila) Gibbs, Ramsey, Minn., Pam (Rick) Pflipsen, Anoka, Minn., Missy Resset, St. Cloud, four stepchildren, Laurie (Jon) Tennessen, LeeAnn (Dan) Sorheim, Tricia (Peter) Menth, Steve Resset; one niece who Carl and Ethel raised, Blanche (Alroy) Dockter, Apple Valley, Minn., their children, Michael and Laurie Moen. Great grandchildren include Ryland, David and Chance Strom, Ty, Trista and Tara Telkamp, Virginia and Victoria Bergman, Matthew Strom, Morgan and Alexandra Schuring, Marc Mosser, Taylor and Justin Pflipsen, Emily and Josh Sorheim, and Loren and Alex Menth. One great grand nephew, Jared Moen. Two brothers, Glen, Osseo, Minn., and Donald, Brooklyn Park; three sisters, Alice Weith, Chicago, Lorraine Bartz and Doris Zoellner, Groton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, his parents and eight brothers, Elmer, Emanuel, Paul, Ray, Howard, Marvin, Clarence and Lloyd Strom.
Casketbearers were Tom Strom, Dwight Strom, Dale Strom, Rich Strom, John Gibbs and JoAnna Strom.
Martie Taylor
The funeral for Martie Taylor, 89, of Conde, was held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton with the Rev. Emil Eberhart officiating.
Burial will be at a later date in the Crandall cemetery near Conde.
She died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen.
Martie Punkett was born April 22, 1908, to Henry and Ada (White) Punkett at Corvallis, Ore. She grew up in Oregon and attended school at Corvallis.
She married
Caryl Taylor on March 6, 1942, in Washington state. They made their first home at Fort Stevens, Ore., while he was in the service. After he was discharged, they lived in Astoria, Ore. They retired and moved to Conde in 1966, where they have lived since.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Conde, the American Legion Auxiliary in Conde and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Redfield.
Survivors include her husband of Conde; three sons, Loyd Taylor, Sioux Falls, Bill Dixon, Corvallis and Art Dixon, Lebanon, Ore.; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Darwin D. Thompson
Mass of Christian burial for Darwin D. Thompson, 71, of Groton, was held Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Groton. Monsignor Marvin McPhee officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton.
Darwin D. Thompson was born February 7, 1927 to Chester “Chet” and Florence (Waggoner) Thompson at Groton. He attended grade school at the Thompson School in rural Groton and attended Groton High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 to serve in World War II. He received his honorable discharge in 1946.
He married
Mary Ann Dohman on February 24, 1950 at Andover. They briefly lived in Groton before making their home for 47 years on their present farm. He farmed with his father and brothers, and then with his sons and grandsons.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and served on the church council. He was also a member of the Groton American Legion Post No. 39, the Fraternal Order of the Elks and the Moose Lodge of Aberdeen, the Putney school board, the Groton school board during the reorganization of the school districts, and was past president of the Putney elevator.
He enjoyed woodworking, travelling with his wife and farming with his sons and grandsons.
Survivors include his wife of Groton; two sons, Terry (Judy) Thompson of Groton, and Lon (Jewel) Thompson of McMinnville, Ore.; one daughter, Beth Thompson of St. Cloud, Minn.; three sisters, Audrey Thurston of Groton, Shirley Sueltz of Watertown, and Sondra Peckham of Buckley, Wash.; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Bob) Lessinger, Grand Forks, Jackie Thompson, Groton, Mark Thompson, Groton, Joshua Thompson and Lynnsey Thompson, both of McMinnville, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ivan Thompson.
Casketbearers were grandsons: Mark Thompson and Joshua Thompson; and nephews: David Dohman, Duane Dohman, David Reinhardt and James Marx.
The organist was Matt Hinds and the ushers were Gene Abeln, Leo Kersting, Steve Simon and Larry Schelle.

Jennie Johnson Totzke
The funeral for Jennie Johnson Totzke, 89, of Groton was held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Groton on July 7, 1998. The Rev. Steve Swenson officiated. Burial was in the Groton Union cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.
She died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at her home in Groton.
Jennie Ness was born August 15, 1908, to Erick and Anna Marie (Osness) Ness at Pierpont. She grew up and attended school in the Pierpont area. She married
Ruben L. Johnson on September 12, 1928, at Augustana Church, rural Claremont. They lived on a farm in Riverside Township, north of Groton. He died in 1969 and she moved into Groton.
She married
Arthur Totzke on August 14, 1982, at Groton.
She was a member of Augustana Church until she moved to Groton. She became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Nigeria Circle of the church, American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens at Groton and ABC Club. She was an original member of the Handicraft Club.
Survivors include her husband of Groton; two sons, Merton (Ella) Johnson of Groton and Lyle (Mary) Johnson of Houston; one daughter, Arlys (Keith) Zoellner of Manhattan, Kan.; one brother, Harry Ness of Britton; two sisters, Lillian Clemens and Annie Tunheim, both of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, one son, two brothers and one sisters.
Casketbearers were Roger Johnson, Jerome Ness, Emery Sippel, Elden Tunheim, Dennis Johnson and Lyle Tunheim.
Arlis Doeden was the organist and Gene Brolin was the soloist.
Ushers were Dennis K. Larson and Mick Osterman.
Robert (Bob) Traphagen
Robert (Bob) Traphagen, 84, Aberdeen, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997 at the Aberdeen Living Center in Aberdeen. His funeral was held January 14 at the First Baptist Church in Aberdeen with the Rev. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Robert Traphagen was born September 24, 1912 at Creswell, Ore., to George and Helen (Thayer) Traphagen. At the age of four, he moved with his family to the Britton area where he was raised. He married
Mildred Denson June 2, 1941 at Britton. The moved to the Claremont area and Robert started working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. They later moved to Ellendale, and in 1963 they moved to Aberdeen. He continued working for the railroad as a Track Laborer until he ritired in 1977 and has continued to make Aberdeen his home since that time.
He was a member of Moose Lodge, the Railroad Veterans Association, Brotherhood of Maintaince of Way and First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred, Aberdeen; one son, Joel R. Traphagen, Aberdeen; two daughters, Bethany Traphagen, Aberdeen, and Roberta (Maurice) Bates, Asheville, N.C.; one brother, Kenneth Traphagen, Aberdeen; two sisters, Dorothy McLaughlin, Britton, and Ruth Gleeson, San Jose, Calif.; n9ne grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
Pallbearers were Brett Traphagen, Sioux Falls, Dick Sorenson, Groton, Rob Wanous, Groton, Charles Skatvold, Aberdeen, Ray Nold, Aberdeen and Leo Weig, Aberdeen.
Daina Larson was the organist and special music was by Sandra Taskerud and the congregation. Lloyd Milbrandt was the usher.
