Gregory Conrad

BURBANK -- Gregory Lee Conrad, 55, of Burbank, died Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Gregg was born January 13, 1952, in Yankton to George and Esther (Freier) Conrad. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Scotland, SD, and attended Scotland public schools while growing up on a farm northwest of town. While in high school, Gregg used his God given musical talents in many ways. He graduated from Scotland High School in 1970.

Gregg moved to Brookings, SD and attended SDSU graduating in 1974 with a BS in Education and Park Management.

He was married to Karen Speidel, and they had a daughter, Amie. Gregg was employed as a park ranger in Brookings until the family moved to the farm while he recuperated from a kidney transplant in 1985. Even then, Gregg showed an interest and an appreciation for flowers and plants. He always enjoyed friends and family stopping in to visit with him.

Gregg was united in marriage to Dawn McFarland on May 20, 1994, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Vermillion, SD. They were blessed with two children, Tiffany and Gregory Jr. The family lived in Vermillion where Gregg was the Park Manager for the City of Vermillion. His hands were seldom idle. He loved to plant colorful flowers and shrubs to add beauty to the parks and downtown Vermillion.

Gregg especially enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, and was an active member of the Concordia Lutheran Church and the Clay County Park Board.

Gregg's memory will be cherished by his wife Dawn of Vermillion; three children: Tiffany and Gregg of Vermillion and Amie (Jack) Fischer of Lincoln, NE; and two grandchildren: Chloe and Hayden; his parents: George and Esther Conrad of Yankton; two brothers: Charles (Karen) Conrad of Scotland and Dennis (Judy) Conrad of Madison, SD; and a sister, Judy (Dennis) Machacek of Crooks, SD; and many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Twyla Mae Conrad.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 10, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with burial to follow in the Bluffview Cemetery in Vermillion.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 9 with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church.

Beulah Krueger

Beulah E. Krueger, 93, of Yankton died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2007) at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral services are in care of Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton.

Jan Staniech

Jan Staniech, 57, of Yankton died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2007) at Avera McKennan Hospice, Sioux Falls.

Memorial services are pending in care of Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton.

A. M. 'Pete' Novotny

LAKE ANDES -- A. M. "Pete" Novotny, 93, died on February 6, 2007. at the Lake Andes Health Care Center, Lake Andes, SD.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2007, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes, SD with burial following in St. Mark's Catholic Cemetery, Lake Andes, SD.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2007, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes, SD with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

A. M. (Pete) Novotny was born on March 10, 1913, to Frank and Mary Ann (Blazek) Novotny in Lake Andes, SD. He attended Howard Country School in Charles Mix County, SD. He married Ida Harrison in Lake Andes in 1940. With the exception of living in California for a short period in the '40s, Pete had been a life-long resident of Lake Andes, SD. He was a prominent businessman in Lake Andes from the late '40s through the '70s, and his namesake, "Pete's Caf " flourished for many years as a convenient stop over for travelers from all directions. Pete's Service and Caf was one of the first 24-hour businesses in the area and never was a needy traveler turned away. His Texaco Service Station and bulk oil delivery (Lake Andes Independent Oil Company) were mainstays in the community for over 30 years. Pete was a board member of the South Dakota Independent Oil Jobbers and helped shape the future of the delivery of oil products within the state. He was an ardent waterfowl and upland bird hunter, and vowed when he lived in California for a short period during WWII that he would some day return to South Dakota, even if he had to "sell pencils" for a living. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes. Pete died on February 6, 2007, at the age of 93, 5 weeks short of his 94th birthday, in the town he loved, Lake Andes.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Ida, Lake Andes, SD; sons, Gene Novotny, Lake Andes, SD, Roger Novotny and wife, Nila (DeWald), Ft. Pierre, SD, and Jerry Novotny and wife, Mary (Lee), Portland, OR; three grandchildren: Dr. Jill Hart and husband, Tom, Sioux Falls, SD, Steven Novotny and wife, Brittany, Pierre, SD, and Cary Novotny, Portland, OR; and two great-grandchildren, Tess and Makenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary; brother, Frank; and 6 sisters: Helen Kuhnes, Irene Novotny, Rose Bechen, Evelyn Johnson, Mary Novak and Veronica Mumm, all lived and grew up on the family farm 9 miles northeast of Lake Andes.

Thomas Fredrickson

Thomas Henry Fredrickson, 65, formerly of Yankton and Lead died Monday, February 5, 2007, at Palisade Manor in Garretson.
Graveside Services will be at 11:00 a.m. MST at the Oakridge Cemetery, Deadwood, South Dakota.

Tom was born to Edward and Mary Frances (Long) Fredrickson in Deadwood, South Dakota. He graduated from St. Patrick's Grade School and Lead High School. He then attended Black Hills State College for two years. He married and had a son Thomas Jr. Later, he was in the South Dakota Human Services Center in Yankton for a number of years. He was then transferred to Prairie Homes and then to Palisade Manor in Garretson.

Survivors include three brothers: Jim, Rapid City, Dennis, Lead and Larry and his wife Janice, Chamberlain.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, Tom Jr.

Marcella Helen Artz

(February 27, 1926 - September 24, 2011)

Marcella “Marcie” Artz, 85, formerly of Northville, SD, died on September 24, 2011, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Spearfish, South Dakota, with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Burial will be held at 9:00 A.M. Monday, October 24, at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota.

Marcella was born February 27, 1926 in rural Mina, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Margaret Dutenhoeffer. Marcie married Lambert Artz September 11, 1946. Together they farmed near Mina, Ipswich, and Northville, South Dakota. After moving from the farm, they traveled to Kansas as “Artz Harvestors” working north to the Dakotas with an inspired crew. “Mother Goose and The Gander”, as they were affectionately referred, continued the journey until 1984 when they began spending winters in Yuma, Arizona and their summers as campground hosts in Yankton, South Dakota.

She is survived by her six children: Robert (Karol) of Ashton, SD, Sharal (Richard) Akin of Garretson, SD, Allen (Paula) of Highland, CA, Kevin (Patti) of Yankton, SD, David of Wolsey, SD, and Lisa (Blayne) Sandidge of Sturgis, SD; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hildi (Jack) Barger, Lake Havasu, AZ, Carol (Roy) Volk, Lake Havasu, AZ, Diane (Ron) Ross, Lincoln, NE, and Kathy (Rich) Kriech, Indio, CA; three brothers: Andrew (Bernice), Romona, CA, Kenny, El Cajon, CA , and Duane (Thelma), Scottsbluff, NE.

Marcie was preceded in death by her husband in 2005; and three brothers: William, Arthur and Wilbert Dutenhoeffer.

Geraldine 'Geri' Huth

AUSTIN, Texas - Geraldine "Geri" Huth, 76, of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2008).

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, Austin.

Kenneth Kube

CROFTON, Neb. --Kenneth M. Kube, age 79, of Crofton, Nebraska, died on Monday, February 5, 2007, at the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Bloomfield, NE.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 9, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton with the Rev. Joseph Broudou and Rev. Timothy Lange officiating. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery with military rites by the Crofton American Legion Post #128.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 3-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 4:00 pm and a Vigil Service and video tribute at St. Rose Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers are Joe Hoebelheinrich, Neil Poppe, Danny Kube, Travis Duerst, Ryan Schmidt, Jonathan Goeden, Cody Watson and Chad Schell. Honorary pallbearers are Neil Hoebelheinrich, Brandon Duerst, Gaylon Hoebelheinrich, Jay Poppe, Kyle Duerst, Brett Schmidt, Dustin Kube, Andrew Goeden and Austin Kube.

Ken was born on November 16, 1927, to Frank and Elizabeth (Meyer) Kube on a farm southwest of Crofton. He grew up in the Crofton area and attended Pleasant Hill School and St. Rose of Lima Catholic School. He graduated from Crofton High School in 1945. He was engaged in farming with his father and brother when he was drafted into the Army. He served in Germany from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. While in Europe he was fortunate to be able to take weekend passes and visit Italy, France, and Switzerland. While in Rome he was in the audience of the pope. He married Charleen Feilmeier on September 9, 1953, in Bow Valley. They lived and farmed west of Crofton for 47 years. He enjoyed raising purebred Simmental and Angus cattle. He also enjoyed dancing, reading, and spending a month or so in the winter in Arizona with his son Gary, Faith, and family. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knox Country Cattlemen's Association, he served several years on the rural Fire Board, and was a lifetime member of the Crofton American Legion Post #128 and past commander. He and Charleen were members of the Yankton and Hartington Square Dance Clubs. He built up two farmsteads, first with the help of his father, the second with the help of his sons.

He is survived by his wife, Charleen of Crofton; 11 children and spouses: Gary and Faith Kube of Cave Creek, AZ, Donna Schmidt of Yankton, SD, Dean and Marcia Kube of Lincoln, NE, Karen and Gary Poppe of Bloomfield, NE, Loren and Cheryl Kube of Crofton, NE, Doris and Rolly Goeden of Crofton, Ann and Rick Watson of Grand Island, NE, Paula Kube of Omaha, NE, David and Debbie Kube of Crofton, Cheryl and Scott Finanger of Sioux Falls, SD, Marcel and Leisa Kube of Norfolk, NE; 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman Kube of Crofton; 3 sisters and spouses: Arlene and Jim Jaycox of Bolivar, MO, Jeanette and Melvin Lammers of Yankton, SD, Dorothy and Bud Hesse of Gravette, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Kenneth in death were his parents; one grandson, Jesse Poppe; 3 granddaughters: Tracey, Amy and Christy Kube; 2 brothers: Francis and Dennis Kube; and a sister-in-law, Marie Kube.

Sister Carmen Ruybal

Sister Carmen Ruybal, 98, of Yankton died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2007) at St. Joseph Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Yankton.

Marty Leonard Eitreim
(July 18, 1919 - September 26, 2011)

Marty L. Eitreim, age 92, of Garretson, died on Monday, September 26, 2011, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Garretson Dollars for Scholars.

Martin Leonard Eitreim was born on July 18, 1919, at Garretson, South Dakota to Iver D. and Jorgena (Buer) Eitreim. He attended school in Garretson and graduated from Garretson High School in 1938. On February 1, 1941, he married Elaine Nelson in Hills, Minnesota. Marty served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his service he was employed as a fireman at the Sioux Falls Army Air Base and at Brown Drug Wholesale Company.

Marty attended the Sioux City Barber College in 1949 and operated a barbershop in Garretson for 30 years. In 1978, he sold the business and became employed with the Southeast Livestock Coop in Sioux Falls until his retirement in 1982. Marty and Elaine then moved to Ottertail, Minnesota. Following Elaine’s death in 1993, Marty moved back to Garretson.

Marty was a charter member of the Garretson Community Swimming Pool and a 67 year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church, 40 & 8, Garretson Commercial Club, Garretson Volunteer Fire Department, and the Palisade Masonic Lodge. He also served as a director of the Split Rock Telephone Corporation and the Ottertail Lake Properties Association. Marty was a dedicated fan of the Garretson Blue Dragons and could always be seen at athletic competitions in Garretson. He was also extremely proud of his 13 years of sobriety.

Survivors include his children: Dianne (Jim) Burma of Sioux Falls, Pamela (Bill) Liester of Battle Lake, MN, David (Nelda) of Garretson and Keith (Susan) of Jasper, MN; 10 grandchildren: Jim Burma Jr., Amy Ries, Susan Kubat, Stephanie Liester, Tom Liester, Valerie Soules, Krissy Stadther, Jennifer Vollmuth, Andrew Eitreim and Marci Eitreim; 10 great-grandchildren: Crosby Ries, Sophia Ries, Eliza Ries, Lauren Kubat, Kyle Kubat, Jim Burma III, Madeline Burma, Owen Liester, Max Liester and William Noah Liester Jackson. He was preceded in death by his wife, three infant children, parents, five siblings and eleven half-siblings.

Jerome "Pete" Schwebach
(August 27, 1926 - October 10, 2011)

Pete Schwebach, 85, died peacefully of lung cancer at the Dougherty Hospice House on Monday Oct. 10th.

Mass of Christian Burail will be 1:00 PM Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 PM Thursday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. A Wake Service will be at 7:00 PM Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church with a Rosary to follow. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery with Military Honors by the Dell Rapids American Legion.

Born August 27th, 1926 in Dell Rapids, Pete graduated from St. Mary's School, joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1944, and attended SDSU. On October 11, 1952, he married Marie Mihin. All his life, Pete worked in business on Dell Rapids' main street. He founded Schwebach Insurance and Real Estate in 1960. Pete enjoyed serving people. He was a life-long resident of Dell Rapids. He loved Dell Rapids and his family very much.

He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years and a life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie, his five children, Karen Wallenberg (Brad), Tim, Rob (Lynn), Jeff (Denise) and Tom (Tami), his fourteen grandchildren, and his sister, Rita Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Nick, Eugene, Len, Fritz and sisters Agnes and Mary.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Mary's building fund.

J. R. Yde
(May 26, 1952 - October 19, 2011)

Jan Robert Yde was born May 26, 1952 at Madison General Hospital to Richard, Sr. and Lola (Estenson) Yde of Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up in Orchard Ridge and attended James Madison Memorial High School, graduating with honors and was a member of a Wisconsin State High School Champion Cross-Country team. From there, he would enroll at his mother’s alma mater, The University of Wisconsin – River Falls. He graduated in 1975 with honors, receiving his Golden R, just as his mother had. After graduation, he moved to rural Renner, SD and founded Sioux Valley Environmental in 1977. On October 15, 1983, he married Julie (Eigen) Yde of Sioux City, IA. In 1985, they bought a house near West Nidaros in rural Renner and raised their three kids: Dane (25), Katrina (22), and Jorgen (17).

J.R. loved baseball, fishing, hockey, hunting, but most of all, being with his family. He joined the Renner Rangers amateur baseball team, and played on the club hockey team in Sioux Falls in his early years. When his older son Dane reached high school, he was one of numerous parents that helped found high school baseball in South Dakota. He would form a co-operative Class B high school team made up of Baltic, Tri-Valley, Montrose, West Central, and Sioux Falls Christian high schools and make their home at historic Renner Field. His team would finish with the league best record and as the runner-up in the state tournament in 2001. The following year, the Rangers won the State Championship and J.R. was named South Dakota High School Baseball’s Coach of the Year. He coached numerous youth baseball and hockey teams for his two sons. He also enjoyed hunting with his father and brothers and spending time at the lake cabin fishing with his wife, daughter, and two boys.

Upon moving to South Dakota, J.R. would join West Nidaros Lutheran Church in rural Crooks. He served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school and even filled in to lead worship when the Pastor was absent. J.R. was a proud businessman and a successful entrepreneur. He started his business from scratch in 1977, working in the upper Midwest. After 34 years, his business would become international, as J.R. worked throughout North America. He was very active in numerous state associations within the water and wastewater industry, and served as the President of the South Dakota Water Operators Association from 1996-1997. He designed and built innovative systems and currently holds three patents and a trademark. Most of all, J.R. enjoyed working with people throughout the water community and made many lasting friendships.

J.R. passed away at Sanford Hospital on Wednesday evening, October 19, 2011, just five short months after his youngest son, Jorgen.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, and son Jorgen. He is survived by his wife, Julie (Sioux Falls, SD) and children, Dane and Katrina; parents, Richard, Sr. and Lola (Madison, WI);siblings, Richard, Jr. (Katie) Yde (Madison, WI); Linda (Tom) Holmes (Oregon, WI); Mark (Lisa) Yde (Fort Wayne, IN); Paul (Sarah Elder) Yde (University Park, MD); Carl (Lynn) Yde (Madison, WI); Helen (Greg) (Marshfield, WI).Many cousins and relatives also survive him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jorgen Yde Benefit Fund at First Premier Bank. .
