Esther H. Petersen
SPEARFISH - Esther H. Petersen, 80, Spearfish, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd L. Petersen; and one son, Donald L. Petersen, Garland, Texas.

RAPID CITY - Ruth E. Call, 73, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Everett; one daughter, Vicki Krugman, Lakewood, Colo.; one son, William Dana Call, St. Charles, Mo.; one brother, Robert Hill, Rapid City; and five grandchildren.

Richard P. Valandra
RAPID CITY - Richard P. Valandra, 71, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Sioux San Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Isa, Rapid City; one son, Paul Valandra, Mission; one daughter, Wanda Valandra, Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Pauline Jackson, Olivia Janis and Marylou Fuller, all of Mission, and Evelyn Hatten, Rapid City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Annie M. Monaghan
RAPID CITY - Annie M. Monaghan, 74, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Robert, Rapid City; one son, Mitchell E. Barton, Rapid City; one stepdaughter, Roberta Monaghan of Florida; one brother, Ermin Hall; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of service at 1 p.m.
Tuesday March 19, at Kirk Funeral Home Chapel of Light with the Rev. Ralph Silcott officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.
Major Howard E. Sargent Jr.
BELLE FOURCHE - Major Howard E. Sargent Jr., USAF Retired, 72, passed away Friday night, March 15, 2002, in Rapid City.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the families respectfully request memorial contributions to the Cancer Care Institute, Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Howard was born April 9, 1929, in Brownsville, Pa., to Howard E. Sargent Sr. and Sarah (Thornton) Sargent. He was raised in, and spent much of his life in southern California. Howard was united in marriage to Marilyn O'Neil June 22, 1952, in East Hampton, N.Y. Howard joined the Air Force in 1950, retiring in November 1970 with the rank of Major.
Howard was a fighter pilot, and flew many types of aircraft including the Lockheed F-104. It was in this reputable jet fighter that he flew 129 combat missions over North Vietnam. He earned many decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as an engineer in private industry in Apple Valley, Calif. In 1993, they moved to Belle Fourche.
Aside from his passion of being an adept pilot, he also demonstrated his brilliance in technical conversation, in the race seat and maintenance of his beloved Jaguars, and at the bench of his grand piano. Howard was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the River Rats Assoc.
Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Marilyn (O'Neil) Sargent of Belle Fourche; two daughters and sons-in-law, Therese (Terry) and Greg Westover of Aberdeen, Idaho, and Dayna and Dr. Steve Dick of Piedmont, S.D.; grandchildren, Tasha (Rick) Johns, Michael, Aubrey and Eli Westover, Ellyse and Sonya Dick; and brother-in-law Walter and Mildred O'Neil of Frederick, Md.
Survivors also include a niece, Diane Arcieri of Rockville, Md., and a nephew, Martin O'Neil of Ozone Park, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles (Peter).
John A. Donnell
HOT SPRINGS — John A. Donnell, 79, of Hot Springs, died March 14, 2002, at his home in Hot Springs.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, March 18, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, at the United Churches in Hot Springs, with Rev. Gary Warren officiating.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
John was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Shickshinny, Pa., to Andrew Bowman and Jennie May (Rustay) Donnell. He grew up in Shickshinny, where he attended school. After school, he joined the Army in 1942 and served during World War II. John was honorably discharged in 1945. He moved to Hot Springs, S.D., in 1946 and worked for a few years on the Angostura Dam construction. He worked at Black Hills Power and Light and retired after 33 years. On Nov. 20, 1959, John married Jean Benson Petty in Hot Springs at the United Churches.
John loved hunting, golfing, sports, playing cards and people. He had a great sense of humor, he never knew a stranger, and he was a true gentleman.
He was a life member of the Elks Club, the VFW, a cribbage club, and a longtime member of the United Churches in Hot Springs.
He is survived by his wife Jean of Hot Springs; his son David Gillespie of Edmonds, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles, sister Katherine and his brother Art.
A memorial has been established in John's memory to benefit the Greater Fall River Health Services.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Vernes Turn Bull
CUSTER — Vernes Turn Bull, 91, Custer and formerly of Hot Springs, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Custer Hospital.

MEADOW — Arthur J. "Archie" Preszler, 92, longtime Meadow area farmer and insurance representative, passed away at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon on Friday afternoon, March 15, 2002. A memorial has been established.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 19, at 10 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bison. Pastor David Schilling will officiate and interment will be at Gallaway Cemetery, Meadow, S.D. Visitations will be Monday afternoon and evening at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and one hour prior to the services in Bison.
He was honored as Lemmon's Boss Cowman in 1985.
Grateful for sharing his life are his daughter, Betty Parrott of Meadow; grandchildren, Cindy and Dave Larson of Rapid City, Wade and Kim Parrott of Woodbury, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Zach and Jordan Parrott and Lauren Larson; four brothers, Kenneth and Bob Preszler, Lemmon, Ray Preszler, Meadow, and Harry Preszler, Bison; three sisters, Mildred Voight of Memphis, Tenn., Esther Watts, Casper, Wyo., and Pearl Ehlert, Little Chute, Wis.
Richard Allen McKennett
DENVER — Richard Allen McKennett, 68, died March 7, 2002 in Denver, Colorado. He was born December 9, 1933 in White River, South Dakota to Claude and Annie McKennett. He was graduated from Rapid City High School in 1952. He attended Yankton College, Yankton, South Dakota from 1952 to 1954 and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956. He was graduated from Denver University in 1958 with a B.A. in Business Administration and later received a Master's in Finance from the University of Colorado at Denver.
He was united in marriage on August 17, 1958 to Carla Ely. They were blessed with two children, Kirsten and Joshua.
During his career Dick served as a legal administrator for the law firms of Davis, Graham, and Stubbs; Schmidt and Elrod; and retired from Haligman and Lottner in 1998. He made significant contributions to the formation of the Mile High Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators in 1972 and served as President, Regional Vice President, Member of the Board of Directors, as well as chairing various committees for that organization. In retirement, Dick was a faithful volunteer for several entities including one day per week at Colorado Legal Aid Society, and his church where he served in many capacities. He was the treasurer of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Foundation, member of the Property Committee there, and was currently liaison to the Colorado Historical Society for the restoration of the bell tower.
He enjoyed fly-fishing, golf, skiing, running, biking, his book group, and especially his family. He was a gentle, loving man and much loved and respected by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Marvin McKennett.
He is survived by his wife, Carla; daughter Kirsten Warhoe, her husband, Brian Warhoe, and grandchildren Jessica and Theodore Warhoe; son Joshua and granddaughter Hannah McKennett; sisters Melba Ott and Phyllis Olson; brother Dale McKennett; and several nieces and nephews.
Andrea Davis
RAPID CITY — Andrea Davis, 50, Rapid City, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her children, Jeremy, Abbey and Becca, all of Rapid City, and Eric of Vermillion; and her parents, John and Marnie Cherven, Mt. Home, Ark.; and a special friend, Robert Hanel, Rapid City.

Christopher Dale Conlee
RAPID CITY — Christopher Dale Conlee passed away March 16, 2002, after a courageous battle with Cockayne Syndrome. Christopher was born Dec. 2, 1975, in Kadoka, S.D., to Bruce and Virginia (Svenson) Conlee. In 1978, he began his education in the Kadoka Public School system, and was instrumental in starting the first preschool special education program. Then in 1980 he transferred to Crippled Children's Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, S.D. In 1984 he moved to Deadwood, S.D., and continued his schooling with Black Hills Special Services Co-op of Sturgis, S.D. During his school years he was a student in the Kadoka, Deadwood and Spearfish public schools. In 1994, Christopher received his high school diploma at the Kadoka High School graduation. In 1999 he received an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Black Hills State University. Christopher spent most of his life educating others, including doctors, nurses, children, teachers and lawmakers about what it is like to be physically and medically challenged. The most important thing he taught others was to never give up on any of your goals, and to be happy.
He had a great love for his nieces and nephews, and his greatest joy was to hold them on his lap for rides in his wheelchair. There was always a special joy when he spent time with his niece, Bailey Rose. She was his little angel who put sunshine in his life. He enjoyed four-wheeling, outings to the Rushmore Mall, the gambling machines in Deadwood, wearing red and have a Coke close at hand and balloons. One of the most instrumental people in is life was Dr. Sam Mortimer, who without him, many of Christopher's life accomplishments would not have been possible. Also, Black Hills Special Services gave him so many opportunities to achieve all that he has done, and to give him quality life. He will be especially missed by his many caregivers, nurses and teachers at Black Hills Special Services, the medical staff of pediatrics at Rapid City Regional Hospital, members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, and especially his family, and other special friends who were part of his life. Christopher lived and loved life to the fullest of his capabilities. Most of all, he will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his wonderful smile!
He was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church of Rapid City, and was a participant in Special Olympics for many years.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his parents, Bruce and Virginia Conlee of Black Hawk, S.D.; his sister, Brenda, and husband, Brad Johnson of Rapid City; and a brother, Charles Conlee, and wife, Jan of Blair, Neb. He has two nieces, Sarah Conlee and Bailey Rose Johnson; and three nephews, Andrew and Bryce Johnson, and Carson Conlee. Also he is survived by his grandmothers, Marcella Svenson of Chamberlain, S.D., and Sadie Williams of Kadoka, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Charles Svenson and Art Conlee, and one niece, Amanda Margaret Johnson.
Visitation will be Monday, March 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., at Kirk Chapel of Light. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kent Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to Black Hills Special Services, BHSU Special Ed. Dept. and Rapid City Regional Hospital Pediatrics.
Corinne Alma Bauer
CORNELIUS, Ore. — Corinne Alma Bauer, 74, formerly of Rapid City, died in Cornelius, Oregon, on Sunday, March 10, 2002.
She was born August 13, 1927, at Redfield, S.D., to Henry and Alma (Leu) Bauer. She was one of eight children, five of whom have preceded her in death. Corinne was engaged in private nursing for most of her life.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Aloha, Oregon, Catholic Daughters of America, and Does 33, a woman's auxiliary of the Elks Club. She won many trophies in the Does Bowling League. Corinne was a member of Paha Sapa All Girls Choir, which performed throughout the Rapid City area.
She is survived by two sisters, Irene Gaffney of Rapid City and Sister Dorothy Bauer of Denver, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, U.B. Bauer, Henry Frank Bauer, Dr. Leo Bauer and Norbert Bauer; and by one sister, Elaine Rabel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rapid City, with Fr. Timothy Castor as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.

Ronald H. Crown
MCALLEN, Texas — Ronald H. Crown, 69, began his journey into eternal life Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, after battling illness.
Ron, a McAllen resident since the fall of 2000, was born May 18, 1932, in Chicago, Ill. He served our nation in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, retiring from Ellsworth Air Force Base. He managed a Phillip's 66 station on Mount Rushmore Road for Moyle Petroleum for several years. He and his wife, Betty, bought a resort in Michigan. From there they retired to McAllen, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinhold Ferg and Augusta Elizabeth Krueger; a brother, Robert Crown; and an aunt, Ethel Miller.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Betty Louise Crown of McAllen; his four children, Herb Crown of St. Louis, Melinda (Jim) Hall of Redding, Colo., Jane (Ed) Zupp of Nicholasville, Ky., and Tom Crown of Nicholasville, Ky.; two stepchildren, Tom Cottrell of Fla. and Paul Cottrell of Minn.; three grandchildren, Amber Zupp of Fla., Nicole and Daniel Crown of Mo.; one step-grandchild, Shawn Cottrell of Minn.; and his aunts, Elsie and Eleanor, both of Chicago, Ill.
A memorial service in his loving memory and honor was held Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Kreidler Memorial Chapel, 400 N. Taylor Rd., McAllen.
Cremation services were entrusted to the care of Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen.

Evelyn Louise Whitman
STURGIS — Evelyn Louise Whitman, 79, Sturgis, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Whitman, Longmont, Colo., and H. Wayne Whitman, Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Virginia Wiley, Gillette, Wyo., Shirley Gregory, Laurel, Md., and Peggy Rice, Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother, Arden Palmer, Faith; one sister Ethel Ingalls, Opal; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey O. Whitman.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and one hour before services at the church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Shriners.
