Howard 'Duffy' Dufloth
RAPID CITY - Howard "Duffy" Dufloth, 87, of Rapid City, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born to Gottlieb and Carrie (Schneider) Dufloth on Aug. 3, 1914, in Beebe, South Dakota. He grew up in Tolstoy and while living there, he worked with his father at a local lumber yard. From Tolstoy, the family moved to Aberdeen, where he worked at RB Freightlines & KO Lee. In the early 1950s, he was united in marriage to Ellen Hughes in Aberdeen at the Wesleyan church. Shortly after, they moved to Rapid City, where he worked at a local shoe store, and then the Rapid City Public School System until he retired.
He was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Rapid City. He was a faithful member, serving as an usher and Sunday School secretary. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening and hunting. Howard moved into the Victorian Assisted Living Home in 1999.
He is survived by his sisters, Katherine (Edgar) Dutt of Tolstoy, Grace (Cy) Pettigrew of Rapid City, Virgil (Paul) Comstock of St. Paul, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Local survivors include nephews Larry (Mollie) Pettigrew and family, Rodney (Karen) Pettigrew and family; and niece, Roxie Pettigrew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, approximately 10 years ago, his parents and his brother Earl.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Monday, March 25, 2002, from noon until 6 p.m. and then for one hour before services at the church.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at First Wesleyan Church in Rapid City, with the Revs. Michael Schultz, Glenn Wessel and Darrell Wagner officiating. Committal services will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
Orville Wayne Kline
RAPID CITY - Orville Wayne Kline, 78, Rapid City, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 24, 1923, in Wasta, S.D., to Arthur and Bertha Kline. He married Laura E. Hisek July 1, 1942, in Rapid City, S.D. They lived in Buffalo Gap and Rapid City.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked with the Rapid City Water Department until his retirement in June 1985. He was a member of the VFW Post 1273.
He is survived by his son, Charles Kline; two daughters, Lorie Kauhn and Louise Wold; one sister, Helen Harris; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura, and his son, David.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Behrens Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Behrens Mortuary, with Reverend Steve Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Frances B. Leberknight
RAPID CITY - Frances B. Leberknight, 93, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Jantz, Rapid City, and Mary Graham, Custer.
Arrangements are pending with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Phyllis J. Gerken
RAPID CITY - Phyllis J. Gerken, 76, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Gerken, Rapid City; three daughters, Gayla Goldsmith, Los Angeles, Jacklyn Williams, Malibu, Calif., and Jana Fields, Oak Park, Calif.; three sons, John Gerken, Rapid City, Daniel Gerken, Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and Michael Gerken, Valley Glen, Calif.; four sisters, Elma Helgager, Naomi Flyger, Evelyn Van Gorkom, Rapid City, and Bertha Bogard; one brother, Duane Peterson; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. A private family interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.
Phyllis M. Larimer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Phyllis M. Larimer, 80, Colorado Springs and a longtime resident of Rapid City, died Jan. 17, 2002, in Colorado Springs.
Mrs. Larimer was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Zell, S.D., to Hazel and Ray Dyer and grew up in Letcher, S.D. She was married Feb. 8, 1943, to Lowell "Dutch" Larimer and they lived in Seattle, Wash., before moving to Rapid City in 1950. Her husband, Dutch, preceded her in death, June 28, 1976.
She worked for Western Dakota Medical Clinic and Internal Medicine Group of Rapid City. She also worked in retail and at Universal Travel before retirement. She was a member of American Business Women, past president, and woman of the year in 1979. She was a member of SD Credit Women, and past president. She was a member of BPOE Does, Rapid City, Drove 33, and a past president. She was also a member of Blessed Sacrament Church.
She moved to Colorado in 1996 to live with her son and family.
Two sons, Jerry and wife Alberta, Aurora, Colo., and Rylie and wife Colette, in Colorado Springs, Colo., survive her. She also leaves five grandchildren: Scott, Shawn, Jeff, Heidi and Curtis; many nieces and nephews and friends. She has a sister, Patricia O'Brien, California, and a brother, Wallace Dyer in Washington.
She will be remembered for her hospitality to many friends and family, her love for the Black Hills and her enthusiasm for Bronco football.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 28, at 10 a.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with inurnment following at Mt. Calvary in Rapid City. A lunch will follow.
A memorial has been established to the Rapid City Elks Lodge or to the senior service of your choice.
Nellie M. Matson
RAPID CITY - Nellie M. Matson of Rapid City passed away at the age of 77 from multiple myeloma on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at a local nursing home.
She was born on March 25, 1924, in Spearfish, S.D., to Horry M. and Helen (Long) Fish, and while growing up lived many years in the Homestake House in Spearfish Canyon, as her father was employed by the Homestake Mine. She graduated from Spearfish High School in 1941 and attended one year at Black Hills State College. She attended Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in Chicago, graduating as an R.N. in 1945. She then moved to Rapid City and began working as an R.N.
Nellie met her future husband, Marion "Pat" Matson here in Rapid City; they were married April 6, 1947, following a two-week courtship. From this union 10 children were born, along with 55 years of memories. She worked off and on as an R.N. at the Rapid City hospitals. As a mother of 10 children she was active in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Little League Baseball. Nellie was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sports. She was a longtime member of the Women of the Moose.
She is survived by her husband, Marion "Pat" Matson of Rapid City, 10 children: Michael A. Matson and wife Lorre of Fort Morgan, Colo., Bernard L. Matson and wife Jean, Vesper A. Wright and James A. Matson, all of Rapid City, Jacqueline M. Lammers and husband Steve of Mt. Zion, Ill., John S. Matson and wife Janie of Fresno, Calif., Beverlee J. Michelson and husband Richard of Loveland, Colo., Mary Lou Gorris and husband Paul of Pine Hill, N.M., Joseph M. Matson and David P.B. Matson, both of Rapid City; 31 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Michael A. Fish of Sturgis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Billie J. Fish, Patricia J. Moller and Marion J. Ferren; her brother, Robert G. Fish; and grandson Anthony James Matson.
Memorial services are set for Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Home's Chapel of Light in Rapid City, with the Rev. Brent Woodard officiating. Burial of the ashes will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City. There will then be a reception held by the Women of the Moose of which Nellie was a member.
A memorial has been established for the local Salvation Army.
Margaret Osterholt
RAPID CITY - Margaret Osterholt, 76, Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd Osterholt, Rapid City; three sons, Lyle Osterholt, Shreveport, La., Rueben Osterholt and Elvin Osterholt, both of Rapid City; two daughters, Debby Husky, New Mexico, and DeAnn Koski, Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers, Lloyd Nordstrom, Belle Fourche, and LeRoy Nordstrom, Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be one hour before services, which will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Ann V. Bruce
SPEARFISH - Ann V. Bruce, 94, Spearfish and formerly of Hot Springs, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include one son, Gerald Bruce, Spearfish.
Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Lille J. Crandall
RAPID CITY - Lille J. Crandall, 84, Rapid City, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include six children, Mick Crandall, Centerville, Utah, Pat Gower, Albuquerque, N.M., Jim Crandall and Kay Crandall, both of Rapid City, Charyl Skates, Bozeman, Mont., Clay Crandall, Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister, Celestia Rees, Odessa, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Leona LeCompte
MOBRIDGE - Leona LeCompte, 85, Mobridge and formerly of Eagle Butte, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Beverly Health Care Center in Mobridge.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. (CST) rosary service today at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. (MST) Monday, March 25, at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte, with the Rev. Tom Westhoven officiating. Burial will be at LaPlant Catholic Cemetery.
Laura (Brost) Pilloud
SPEARFISH — Laura (Brost) Pilloud, 87, Spearfish and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
She was born February 17, 1915, in Crystal Springs, N.D., to William and Selma (Babitzke) Brost. They farmed in North Dakota until 1930, when they moved to South Dakota and continued farming.
Laura graduated from the 8th grade at Ingresol School.
She married Phillip Herman in 1933 and married George Pilloud in 1960.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche and was a member of the Women of the Moose in Belle Fourche and the Ladies Extension Service in Arpan.
Laura loved people, cooking, fishing and the many flowers in her yard. She will be missed by her family and many friends.
Survivors are three daughters, Genevieve (Joe) Aberle, Fort Collins, Colo., Caren Nelson, Maui, Hawaii, and Sonia (Jerry) Ainsworth, Spearfish; 14 grandchildren, Steve, Mark (Cheryl), Tom (Kristi), Gary and Scott Aberle, Stacey Baxter, Shawn (Mike) Russe, Stuart (Melinda) Nelson, Lorrie (Dave) Arner, Pamela (Allen) Ketchum, Debra Haney, Peggy (Mike) Jelinic, Layne (Kim) Ainsworth and Mistie (Jeff) Caldwell; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona (Delmer) Bouchey, Toppenish, Wash.; three brothers, Ray (Dolly) Brost, Belle Fourche, Walter (Donna) Brost, Goldendale, Wash., and Earl (Barbara) Brost, Zillah, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Eleanor; parents; two husbands; three brothers; and two sisters.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche, and for one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.
A memorial has been established to St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche.
Nellie Marie Matson
RAPID CITY — Nellie Marie Matson, 77, Rapid City, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Marion Watson, Rapid City; 10 children, Michael Matson, Fort Morgan, Colo., Bernard Matson, Vesper Wright, James Matson, Joseph Matson and David Matson, all of Rapid City, Jacqueline Lammers, Mount Zion, Ill., John Matson, Fresno, Calif., Beverlee Michelson, Loveland, Colo., and Mary Lou Gorris, Pine Hill, N.M.; 31 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Michael Fish, Sturgis.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Charles Eugene Oleson
NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Charles Eugene Oleson, 70, Newcastle, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at a veterans hospital in Minneapolis.
Survivors include his wife, Rheta Oleson, Newcastle; three sons, Randy Oleson and Chuck Oleson, both of Newcastle, and Lyle Oleson, Upton; three daughters, Teresa Bashill, South Lake, Texas, Christine Janetto, Tempe, Ariz., and Angela Baldwin, Gillette; two brothers, Bob Oleson and Pete Oleson, both of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Vicky, Sheridan, and Julie, Lumas, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy from May 1950 to March 1954.
Visitation was Friday, March 22, at Worden Chapel in Newcastle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Bill Haley officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.
Memorials may be made to Michaels Senior Center.
Shu Hui Tien
SUDBURY, Mass. — Shu Hui Tien, 93, Sudbury and formerly of Honan Province, China, and Rapid City, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at her grandson's home in Sudbury.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole Chiang and Helen Chang, Rapid City; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Meng-Chia Tien, preceded her in death.
Services will be at noon today at Duckett-J.S. Waterman and Sons Funeral Home in Sudbury.
Burial will be at Newton Cemetery in Newton, Mass.
