Donna J. Hanson
BISON — Donna J. Hanson, 75, Bison, S.D., died at the Hettinger Hospital, Hettinger, N.D., Friday, April 12, 2002.
She was born Dec. 19, 1926, at Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Quincey L. and Eleanor (Anderson) Wright. She moved with her family to Gregory, S.D., as a child, and attended schools and graduated from high school at Gregory. She attended the McMurray Girl's Finishing School following high school graduation.
Donna married James R. "Bob" Hanson on Dec. 8, 1946, at Broadus, Mont.
The couple resided in the rural Bison area following their marriage. They lived in Colorado and Wyoming for a number of years prior to returning to Bison in 1970. She was the Radio Dispatcher for the Sheriff's office, the Ambulance Service, the Highway Patrol and all law enforcement agencies in the area for a period of 11 years. For a period of four years she was the ambulance dispatcher, serving 24 hours a day in this capacity. In her 11 years of working as the dispatcher she worked as a volunteer and refused to accept any payment for her services. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, James R. "Bob" Hanson, Bison; a son, Jim R. Hanson and his wife Jo, Rapid City; and seven grandchildren, Sheila Sallee, Tanya Arbach, Amber Hanson, Joshua Hanson, Adam Hanson, Justin Hanson and Don George.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Terry and Rick.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the American Lutheran Church in Bison. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to services.
Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City, S.D.
Beatrice M. Larson
CHANDLER, Ariz. — Beatrice M. Larson, 90, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Chandler Regional Hospital.
Survivors include three daughters, Janette Bradford and Alice Kruse, both of Tucson, and Gladys Hunt, Mesa.
Arrangements are pending with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Service in Rapid City.
Eleanor L. Haagenstad
RAPID CITY — Eleanor L. Haagenstad, 84, Rapid City, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane Hernlund, Ellisville, Mo.; two sons, Keith Haagenstad, Billings, Mont., and Brian Haagenstad, Rapid City; five sisters, Vernice Argo, Katy, Texas, Evelyn Burleson and Myrtle Hall, both of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Marlys Moist, South Bend, Ind., and Velma Christiansen, Havre, Mont.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odin Haagenstad.
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 15, at Faith Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.
Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
Beverly B. Hilmer
NEW UNDERWOOD — Beverly B. Hilmer, 60, New Underwood, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Don Hilmer, rural New Underwood; her mother, Mae Dingeman, New Underwood; two daughters, Denise Volmer and Serena Rice, both of rural Wasta; one son, Samuel Hilmer, rural Caputa; and five grandsons.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Roy Tucker
BILLINGS, Mont. — Roy passed away April 6, 2002, at St. Vincent Hospital. His children were with him when he passed away.
He was born Jan. 3, 1936, the son of LeRoy Donald Benoit and Elaine Caroline Overseth in Pierre, S.D. He spent many of his days with his grandfather, Oscar Overseth, whom he dearly loved.
He went to school in Mobridge, S.D., as a young boy, and later in Billings.
He married Delores Blotsky, May 28, 1955.
He rodeoed in the ‘50s and ‘60s, riding bareback and bulls. He won several championships.
He was a well known artist and saddle maker. He worked for Connolly Saddlery and then had his own shop. He enjoyed making saddles and belts.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather and brother.
He is survived by his children, Alvin Tucker; Deborah (Steve) Smith, grandchildren, Stephanie and Justin; Michelle Howard, grandchildren Angela and Joshua, great-grandchildren, Anthony, Alicia, Justice and Julia; Renee Tucker, grandchildren, Adam, Amanda and Kaycee; Zane Williams, grandchildren, Samantha and Sydney; Denise (Rick) Williams, grandchildren, Matt and Katie. He is also survived by his former wife, Delores Huschka.
Cremation took place at Smith's Funeral Home in Billings.
Douglas Ellison
RAPID CITY — Douglas Ellison, 45, Rapid City, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy, Rapid City; one daughter, Heather, Rapid City; his mother, Betty Ellison, Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Lynn Huntington, Camarillo, Calif., and Janet Costello, Sioux Falls; and three brothers, Jim Ellison, Cary, Ill., Scott Ellison, South Sioux City, Neb., and Craig Ellison, Nashville, Tenn.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Ellen K. Aish
MINNEAPOLIS — Ellen K. (Kachelmacher) Aish, age 87, of Minneapolis, died April 3, 2002, at her home in Minneapolis.
She was born July 29, 1914, in Fargo, N.D.
She is preceded in death by loving husband Raymond J. Aish.
She will be missed by sons, Peter, Paul (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Loralee, Brian, Andrea, Matthew; and four great-grandchildren plus many friends and relatives.
She lived in Rapid City, S.D., with her family from 1914 to 1960 where she served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and as a Gray Lady at St. Johns Hospital. She spent all her summers at her family lake home in northern Minnesota.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Robert K. Rittel
PIERRE — Robert K. Rittel, 73, Pierre, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include three sisters, Marcelene Kukal, Walla Walla, Wash., Mary Jane Hemmingson, Kadoka, and Darlene McCormick, Spearfish; and special friend, Thelma Mertinson, Pierre.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Community Bible Church in Pierre. Burial will be at 2 p.m. (MDT) Wednesday, at Kadoka Cemetery in Kadoka.
Mildred A. Fink
BELLE FOURCHE - Mildred A. Fink, 95, of Belle Fourche passed away Tuesday morning, April 9, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
At 7 p.m. Sunday evening there will be a prayer service at the church.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 15, at 10:30 a.m. from the First Congregational/United Church of Christ. Pastor Steve Olson of the Belle Fourche United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Pine Slope Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Mildred was born January 24, 1907, at Macy, South Dakota, to William Henry and Rose Marie (Ducharme) Ernest. She attended the Harding School, and later moved with her family to a farm on Horse Creek near Newell, attending the Horse Creek School where she graduated from the 8th grade.
Following her schooling, she lived with her family near the Macy Road House on the South Fork of the Moreau River. Mildred was united in marriage to Glenn W. Fink,
December 5, 1931, in Belle Fourche. Following their marriage they farmed and ranched near Mason, South Dakota. In 1945, they sold their place and moved into Belle Fourche.
Mildred lived in Belle Fourche until 1995, when she moved to the Dorsett Home in Spearfish.
Mildred enjoyed her family and many friends; she also enjoyed playing bingo and doing embroidery work. She also enjoyed camping and fishing with her family. She was a member of the Belle Fourche Senior Citizens.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her three children, Glen and Jackie Fink of Yuma, Ariz., Gary and Peggy Fink of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Mary Lou and Marion Hespe of Belle Fourche; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Ruby Ernest of Belle Fourche.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glenn in 1979; and three brothers, Ervin, Roy and Bill Ernest.
George John Medeiros
STURGIS - George John Medeiros, 74, Sturgis, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Medeiros, Sturgis; five sons, Ben Medeiros, Orland, Calif., George Medeiros, Paradise, Calif., John Medeiros, Chico, Calif., Russell Medeiros,
Detroit, and Nick Medeiros, Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Shirley Hall, Rapid City; two sisters, Helen Hubbard, Manteca, Calif., and Rose Marie Schmulian, Tucson, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.
He served in the military during World War II and the Korean War.
He was cremated, and his ashes were scattered over the ocean.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis is in charge of local arrangements.
Scott Warren 'Toby' Tobias
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Scott Warren "Toby" Tobias, O.D., 36, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away on April 9, 2002. Scott was born in Goose Bay, Labrador Newfoundland, Canada, on May 6, 1965. Scott lived in Florida before moving with his family to Rapid City, South Dakota. He graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1983. He attended the University of South Dakota, where he graduated in 1988. He married his best friend, Janet Koiner, on
August 22, 1987. Scott then attended optometry school at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where he graduated in May 1992. Scott and Janet moved to Arizona, where Scott worked at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center as a doctor of optometry while holding the rank of Commander in the Commissioned Corps.
In January 1998, they were blessed with their son, Steven Robert, who takes after his father in so many ways, with his love of sports and music. Scott is survived by his wife Janet and son Steven of Chandler; mother Betty Tobias of Chandler; brother Gary Tobias of Casselberry, FL; brother Steve Tobias of Whitefish, MT; and sister Pam Zacher of El Paso, TX. Visitation was held on Friday, April 12th from 5-8 p.m., and memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 13th at 11 a.m. at Carr-Tenney Mortuary at 2621 S. Rural Rd., Tempe, Arizona. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Tobias, Steve Tobias, Justice "J.J." O'Daniel, Ron Ross, Drew Pearson and Billy Dunn.
Donations will be accepted in the name of Steven Robert
Tobias' College Savings Fund at Bank of America branches.
Scott was a great husband, father, son, brother, friend and doctor. He will be missed by the many lives that he touched.
V. Elaine Abels
PIERRE - V. Elaine Abels, 62, Pierre, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Brad Abels, Pierre; three sisters, Glenna Hermann, Morgan Hills, Calif., and Dory Bartels and Marge Stevenson, both of Spearfish; and seven grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
A prayer service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at the home of George and Marge Stevenson, 232 Harney Peak Court, Spearfish, with the Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Friends may join them for lunch after the prayer service.
In lieu of flowers, cards may be sent to 232 Harney Peak Court, Spearfish, SD 57783.
