Marvin J. Dietrich
LEAD Memorial Services for Marvin J. Dietrich, 77, of Lead, will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. The Rev. Greg Kroger will officiate. Marvin died on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer. There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established.
Inurnment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Military Honors. Marvin was born August 21, 1924, in Strasburg School District, McIntosh County, ND, to Jacob and Selma (Dockter) Dietrich. He attended Butte School in Corson County. Marvin married Helen June Lipp on September 14, 1974, in Lead. He worked for Homestake Mining Company for 20 years, retiring in 1988 as a contract miner.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and in the 3rd Army Cowboys Rodeo. He was a member of the Homestake Union, VFW, Elks, and member of the SD Rodeo Association, loved to bowl, riding his Harley motorcycle, enjoyed camping, snowmobile, and riding in his Jeep. Survivors include his wife Helen of Lead, a daughter, Benita Banek of Spring, Texas, a son, Max Dietrich of Bismarck, ND; two step daughters, Cheryl Chaput and her husband Mike of Deadwood, Lori L. Sack of Ft. Myers, Florida; a step son, John D. Lipp and his wife Karla of Rapid City; five Grandchildren; six Step Grandchildren; two step Great Grandchildren; brothers, Martin of Bidker, MN, Elwood of Sturgis, Jake of Mesa, AZ, Kenny of Rapid City, and Les of Rapid City, two sisters, DeLaine and Lorraine both of Lemmon, SD, numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, two brothers, Ed and Elmer, and one sister Lucy preceded Marvin in death.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.
Jerry L. Jelinek
WINNER Jerry L. Jelinek, 90, Winner, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.
Survivors include one son, Gerald, Winner; one brother, John Jelinek, Winner; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., today at Mason Funeral Home in Winner. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 29, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.
Alfred L. Al' Martschinske
FAULKTON Alfred L. "Al" Martschinske, 65, Faulkton and Sturgis, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Adella Martschinske, Faulkton; one son, Martin Martschinske, Keystone; two daughters, Susanne Geary, Conde, and Rhonda Haak, Black Hawk; six grandchildren; and one sister, Bertha Mann, Albuquerque, N.M.
Visitation was Friday at Luce Funeral Home in Faulkton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at United Church of Faulkton, with the Rev. Bruce Adams officiating.
Burial will be at Faulkton Cemetery.

Martha M. Brown
RAPID CITY Martha M. Brown, 86, of Rapid City, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Martha was born July 27, 1915, in Emery, S.D., to Peter and Frances (Stoltz) Ernster. She was united in marriage to Ralph Brown on Oct. 14, 1941, and the couple moved to Rapid City. She was well known as an accomplished seamstress and was an active member of the Catholic church, RSVP and the Elks Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Janet Fairfield and her husband Wally of Overland Park, Kan., Jeannie Russ and her husband P.J. of Abilene, Texas, Mary Brown and her husband Steve of Ashburn, Va., and Patty Baxter and her husband Bill of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Jim Brown of Bremerton, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ralph.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with a Christian wake service at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at the Immaculate Conception Church (5th and South streets) in Rapid City, with Msgr. Michael Woster presiding. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
Franklin Whitaker
Graveside services for Franklin Delano Whitaker, 68, Rapid City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 6, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Margaret G. Heylens
BROOKINGS - Margaret G. Heylens, 95, Brookings, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Brookings Hospital.
Survivors include one son, William Heylens, Bruce; two daughters, Barbara Culey, Rapid City, and Constance Culey, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Constant Heylens, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Bruce United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold Herbranson officiating.
Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Bruce.
Derwin W. Straw
HILL CITY - Derwin W. Straw, 39, Hill City, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his mother, Viola Straw, Hill City; four sisters, Annette Groves, Hill City, Donna Cappess and Diane Gramkow, both of Custer, and Bonnie Goodroad, Nisland; and seven brothers, Floyd Straw, Fairburn, Donald Straw, Anchorage, Alaska, Donovan Straw, Rapid City, and Danny Straw, Duane Straw, Ronnie Straw and Dennis Straw, all of Hill City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Hill City Senior Center, with Jerry and Donna Grover officiating.
A reception will follow the service.

David L. Samson
RAPID CITY - David L. Samson, 67, Rapid City and formerly of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.
Survivors include two brothers; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews, including Ronda Mundt, Rapid City.
Services will be at a later date in Ohio.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of local arrangements.

Celeste Nancy Frewaldt
SIOUX FALLS - Celeste Nancy Frewaldt, 46, Sioux Falls, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include three daughters, Rachel Urban, Lydia Sandquist and Vera DeRoon; three sisters, Arliss Iron Heart, Winner, Betty Lockwood, New Town, N.D., and Wanda Gary, Wagner; three brothers, Bernard Crowe, Minneapolis, Ronald Gary, Brookings, and Glenford Gary, St. Francis; and several grandchildren.
Visitation will begin today at John King Memorial Hall in Winner and will continue until the time of services, which will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the hall.
Burial will be at Miniska Presbyterian Cemetery in rural Tripp County.
Mason Funeral Home of Winner is in charge of arrangements.
Astrid Sissel
SPEARFISH - Astrid Sissel, Spearfish, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include one son, H. Ned Sissel, Upland, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Arthur Deforest Parsons
OELRICHS - Arthur Deforest Parsons, 72, Oelrichs, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Parsons, Oelrichs; one stepdaughter, Sandy Rhodes, Chadron, Neb.; three brothers, Donald Parsons, Custer, James Parsons, West Fargo, N.D., and Norman Parsons, Rapid City; and four sisters, Dorothy Pennel, Custer, Ethel Osmotherly, Crawford, Neb., Carol Lulf, Chadron, and Sandy Osmotherly, Oelrichs.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 28, and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday, April 29, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Virginia E. Christensen
HOT SPRINGS - Virginia E. Christensen, 80, of Hot Springs, died April 24, 2002 at the Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the United Churches in Hot Springs, with Rev. Gary Warren officiating.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
Virginia was born December 19, 1921 in Sturgis, South Dakota, to Cecil and Georgia (Houston) Caton. She attended Elementary and High School in Sturgis and Lincoln General School of Nursing in Lincoln, Nebraska. Virginia later worked for Dr. Woods Dental Office in Sturgis and the Ft. Meade Hospital. She married Dan Christensen in 1952, then they moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota. They had Dites Drug Store until Dan's death in 1971. Virginia operated a fabric shop in Hot Springs until her retirement in 1983.
Virginia never gave up, and she loved to help friends. Her hands were always busy: sewing, knitting or playing the organ. She often sang at funerals.
She was a member of the United Churches, BPW, a past worthy matron of the Eastern Stars, the Cub Scouts, Brownies, Job's Daughters and she was the junior choir director.
She is survived by two daughters, Lesly Bennett and her husband Allen of Hot Springs; Susan Harris and her husband Rex of Denver, Colorado; one son, Scott Christensen of
Elizabeth, Colorado; one sister, LaVerne Stewart of Le Grande, California; a very special granddaughter Holly Bennett of Hot Springs; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dan; and one brother, Eugene H. Caton.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Virginia's memory.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.
Joyce Williams
BELLE FOURCHE - Joyce Williams, 79, Belle Fourche, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Williams, Belle Fourche; four sons, Arlind Williams, Watertown, George Williams, Belle Fourche, Harry Williams, Dora, Mo., and Ernest Williams, Custer; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Neomie Olson, Henderson, Nev.; and one brother, Ernest Smith, Lompoc, Calif.
She served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, at St. James Episcopal Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. James Marrs officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to St. James Altar Guild.
