In 1925, Bernice moved with her family to the Stage Barn area near Black Hawk, then relocated in 1927 to Custer State Park.
Bernice attended school in the Park, at Rapid City High School, then graduated from Fairburn High School in 1939. She worked at Legion Lake Resort following graduation.
During her years in the park, Bernice experienced many interesting situations with her school, family activities, the resident park buffalo, her jobs, and her family's love of the piano and music - experiences she delighted in re-telling through the years.
Bernice first met Jim Lewis in Custer State Park in 1931. On February 4, 1941, they were married in Alliance, Nebraska. They owned and operated Jack's Café in Sturgis, S.D., then lived and worked in Nebraska, Hereford, S.D., and Rapid City, as well as San Diego, California, and Oklahoma, while Jim served with the U.S. Marines during World War II.
In 1946, they purchased a ranch east of Bonita Springs, S.D., where they lived until 1955. In 1955, the family moved to Hot Springs, living in town and on a ranch north of town. Again, Bernice contributed many stories to the family history about the years on the ranch on the South Dakota prairie and the experiences at the ranch in the Hills and in the trucking business in Hot Springs.
