Donald J. Negard
HOT SPRINGS — Donald J. Negard, 66, Hot Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.
Survivors include one daughter, Laura Deiss; two granddaughters; and one sister, Marjorie Negard Hogenson.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan.
Services will be at a later date at Pigeon Falls, Wis.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.
Gail Carrol Tennyson
RAPID CITY — Gail Carrol Tennyson, 74, Rapid City and formerly of Wall, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Tennyson, Rapid City; one son, Michael Tennyson, Irene; two daughters, Marilyn Stor, Denver, and Debra Johnson, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren; three brothers, Jack, Lyle and George Tennyson, all of Rapid City; five sisters, Joan Paulsen and Norma Williams, both of Rapid City, Twila Koopman, Ivanhoe, Minn., Marlene King, Mesa, Ariz., and Ruby Flatt, Phoenix.
He served in the U.S. Army from October 1945 to February 1947.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at United Methodist Church in Wall, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating.
Burial, with military honors by Sturgis Honor Guard, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
Heman Charles Curliss
BELLE FOURCHE — Heman Charles Curliss, 81, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at R.C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Curliss, Vermillion; one daughter, Lydia Leafgreen, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
His wife, Rotha, preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Friends and family may gather at the funeral chapel before leaving for the cemetery.
Dick Leroy Uithoven
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Dick Leroy Uithoven, 63, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 18, 2002, at his home in Bozeman, Montana. He was born May 30, 1938, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Jake and Jennie Uithoven. He was raised in the Valley Springs, S.D., area and graduated from Hills, Minn., high school.
In 1964, he was united in marriage to Vonna Ahrendt, and together they raised two sons, Paul and Scott.
Dick began his banking career in Luverne, Minn., with First National Bank and received many promotions that took him to positions in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Huron, S.D. In 1978, he moved to Wolf Point, Mont., to take a position with Citizen's National Bank, where he eventually became the bank President. In 1986, he returned to Rapid City, where he was head of the Commercial Loan department at First Federal Savings and Loan. In 1997, he moved to Montana, where he later worked as a commercial painter for Mel Jones Painting for three years.
Dick retired in 2000 to enjoy his grandchildren and many hobbies, which included golf, hiking and needlework.
Dick is survived by Vonna; Paul and Louise and their two children, Chandler and Jessica, of Bozeman, Mont.; Scott and Heather of Belden, Miss.; and his brother, Mike and Viola of Luverne, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Hope Lutheran Church in Bozeman. The family suggests that desired memorials be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 210 S. Grand Avenue, Bozeman, MT 59715.
Dennis L. Petersen
BLACK HAWK — Dennis L. Petersen, 75, Black Hawk, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Petersen, Black Hawk; one son, Douglas Petersen, Parade; four sisters, Marilyn Roth, Carson, N.D., Lila Farlee, Lantry, Inita Curley, Hot Springs, and Pat Fish, Bentley, Wash.; two brothers, Harley Peterson, Black Hawk, and Raymond Petersen, Eagle Butte; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church in Black Hawk, with the Rev. David Schwan officiating.
Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Lola Werdal
RAPID CITY — Lola Werdal, 70, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Lowell Werdal, Rapid City; two sons, Curt Werdal, Eagan, Minn., and Todd Werdal, Robbinsville, N.J.; two daughters, Shari Nelson,
Baxter, Minn., and Lisa Usera, Rapid City; one brother, the Rev. Dennis Raymond, Thief River Falls, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, with family present from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Tanya Rist officiating.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Sisseton Cemetery.
Stella R. Higgs
STURGIS — Stella R. Higgs, 91, Sturgis, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Sturgis Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include three sons, William Higgs, Wadena, Minn., Allen Higgs, Mesa, Ariz., and Herbert Higgs, Elk City, Okla.; two daughters, Lila Freitag, Phoenix, and Joyce Kruse, Sturgis; one brother, John Krotz, Hay Springs, Neb.; one sister, Rose Mary Kuskie, Hay Springs; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband, William Eugene Higgs, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Tom Campbell officiating.
A second service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church near Rushville, Neb.
Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rushville.
Memorials have been established to St. Thomas Episcopal Church and St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
Darlene Joyce Karrels
STURGIS — Darlene Joyce Karrels, 75, Sturgis, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Fackelman and Matt Karrels, both of Sturgis, Larry Fackelman, Hanau, Germany, and Kevin Fackelman, Champlin, Minn.; one daughter, Georgianne Bolinger, Upland, Ind.; three sisters, Erma Bartels, Rapid City, Millie Wightman, Denver, and LouAnn Grady, Mukilteo, Wash.; one brother, Walter McBride, Center, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Oliver Karrels, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary and Christian prayer service, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Gary Oreshoski officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to Sturgis Public Library.
Larkin Bower ‘Sox' Schnell
STURGIS — Larkin Bower "Sox" Schnell, 90, Sturgis, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.
Survivors include one son, Craig Schnell, Fargo, N.D., and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Howard Smith officiating.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.
Leith B. Zeigler
WINNER — Leith B. Zeigler, 81, Winner, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne Zeigler, Winner; three sons, Ron Zeigler, Brandon, Fla., Mike Zeigler, Owensboro, Ky., and Larry Zeigler, Colome; one daughter, Barb Zeigler, Cheyenne, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Neil Zeigler, Salt Lake City.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner.
Burial will be at Winner Cemetery.
Clarence L. Riggs
SPEARFISH — Clarence L. Riggs, 93, lifelong Spearfish resident, died Sunday, January 20, 2002, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility, Spearfish, from age-related causes.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2002, at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, and at the church one hour prior to services.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday, January 25, 2002, at the United Church of Christ, Spearfish, with Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish.
A memorial has been established for the organ fund at the United Church of Christ.
Clarence was born August 21, 1908, near Spearfish, to Leonard and Mabel (Wilson) Riggs. He married Dorothy Frost in Brunswick, Neb., on March 3, 1935.
Riggs graduated from Spearfish High School in 1928, receiving all-state awards in athletics. After working on a survey crew for a short time, he worked for several businesses in Deadwood, including Brown's Clothing Store, Chase's, Kelly Sales, Home Furniture, and Schwartzwald's Furniture. In 1937, he took over part of the family farm near Spearfish. In addition to farming, he became a business partner with Hubert Heying out of Kansas City, Mo. He operated their sawmill and bought timber contracts. In 1949, he and Dorothy opened a molding mill. After their dry kiln burned in 1956, they bought the Spearfish Bootery and in 1961, they started Mountain View Campground. He sold his shoe business in 1982. He later built roads and managed timber sales for private landowners.
He enjoyed athletics, hunting, fishing, traveling, singing, and woodworking. He especially liked telling stores about his exciting experiences.
Riggs served as a chairman in the 4-H Leaders' Association, and he served on the school board for the Spearfish School District. He was past president of the Spearfish Lions Club, was active in the district assisting Ray Fidler as District Governor, and received a Lion of the Year award. As a member of the United Church of Christ, he served on every church board, taught Sunday school, and sang for many years in the church choir; Riggs served as the first moderator of the congregation and was the oldest living member. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and he served on the board of directors of Lookout Memorial Hospital. He participated for several years in the Black Hills Passion Play. He was active in the Senior Olympics and in 1988 was honored with the Outstanding Male Athlete Award at the S.D. Senior Olympics.
Grateful for having shared in Clarence's life are his wife, Dorothy Riggs, Spearfish; two sons, Clarence "Keith" Riggs, Villerville, France, and Charles Riggs, Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Peggy Steffel, Port Lucie, Fla., and June Harvey, Creswell, Ore.; one brother, James Riggs, Spearfish; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Riggs.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
