Mary Nancy Richards
RAPID CITY — Mary Nancy Richards, 95, Rapid City, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include four sons, Harold Richards, Libuse, La., Neil Richards, Danbury, Wis., Leo Richards, Webster, Wis., and Dale Richards, Rapid City; one daughter, Carol Magnuson, San Diego; one brother, Edwin Tracy, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating.
Burial will be at a later date at Bateman Cemetery in Chippewa Falls.
Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Maye Briggs
KADOKA — Dorothy Maye Briggs, 81, passed away February 1, 2002, at the Kadoka Care Center, where she has been a resident since January 8, 1992.
She was born October 10, 1920, in Platte, S.D., to Harold and Marjorie (Harris) Struble.
She moved with her family to Washabaugh County in 1926 and grew up in the community and attended Garner Rural School.
On April 9, 1939, she was united in marriage to Beuford Briggs at Rapid City, South Dakota. This union was blessed with five children.
They made their home in Kadoka until 1942, then moving to Coalinga, California. In 1944, they returned to Kadoka, where they raised their children.
Dorothy was a member of the Kadoka Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Rebecca Lodge of Kadoka.
Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Bonnie Riggins, Kadoka, and Electa and Doug Preslicka, Bradshaw, Neb.; three sons, Paul and Robert Briggs, Kadoka, and Roger and Linda Briggs, Rapid City; 11 grandchildren, Justin Riggins, Casper, Wyo., Bradley Riggins, Horton, Kan., Linda Penticoff, Rapid City, Tena Most, Roscoe, Neb., Cody Briggs, Marysville, Wash., Larry Briggs, Rawlins, Wyo., and Randy Briggs, Minot, North Dakota, Brent and Jason Preslicka, Lincoln, Neb., Elisa Todd, Stromsburg, Neb., Rita Preslicka, Aurora, Neb., and 15 great-grandkids; and three brothers, Leslie Struble, Kadoka, Clayton Struble of Denver, Colo., and Dell Struble of Belle Fourche.
In addition to her husband, Beuford Briggs, she was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Amy Dunsmore and Esther Madsen.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 3, 2002, from 2 p.m. to
6 p.m. at Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka. Funeral services will be on Monday, February 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Kadoka Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Arlene O'Flanagan officiating.
Burial will be at the Kadoka Cemetery.
Marjorie May Williamson
SPEARFISH - Marjorie May Williamson, 83, Spearfish, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Donald Williamson, Rapid City; three daughters, Sharon Williamson, Warwick, N.Y., Dianne Hildebrand, Costa Mesa, Calif., and Lynne Stanley, Spearfish; one brother, Gilbert Holtry, Napa, Idaho; one sister, Rosalind Eichler, Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and for one hour before services Monday, Feb. 4, at First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Burial will follow at Vale Cemetery.
Betty L. Nolan
NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Betty L. Nolan, 71, Newcastle, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.
Survivors include one daughter, Paulette Thompson, Newcastle, and four grandsons.
No formal services are planned at this time.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
Marc R. Waldron
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Marc R. Waldron, 46, Albuquerque, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include one son, Sean Waldron, Albuquerque; his father, Dick Waldron, Spearfish, S.D.; one brother, Michael Waldron, Anchorage, Alaska; one sister, Kerry Boyle, Anchorage; and one grandchild.
Memorial services were held in Albuquerque.
Donte Lee Spotted Elk
PINE RIDGE - Donte Lee Spotted Elk, infant son of Martha Spotted Elk and Jeffrey Kewanimptewa of Wanblee, was born and died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Pine Ridge Hospital.
Survivors include his parents and his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Spotted Elk, Wanblee.
A one-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Wanblee CAP Office.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the CAP office, with the Rev. Daniel Makes Good officiating.
Burial will be at Gethsemane Episcopal Cemetery in Wanblee.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
Violet R. Jorgensen
CUSTER - Violet R. "Vi" Jorgensen, 85, of Custer, died Wednesday, January 30, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born February 6, 1916, in Elk Point, to Albert and Agnes (Kalstad) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm in Elk Point, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She graduated from Elk Point High School and attended the University of South Dakota.
She married Leon B. Jorgensen on August 15, 1939. The couple lived the first years of their married life in a variety of small towns, where Leon was a teacher. During World War II, she lived in Elk Point and Sioux Falls while he was stationed at bases in the Army Air Corps. After the war, they lived in Pierre and Huron and moved to Rapid City in 1959. She worked for a number of years as a secretary, including positions with the South Dakota State Legislature, the office of the president of Huron College, and U.S. Bank in Rapid City. After her husband's death, she lived for a while in Faribault, Minn. She moved to Custer in May of 2001.
She was an active member of Lutheran congregations, including South Canyon, Rapid City; First English, Faribault; and Custer Lutheran Fellowship. Vi and "Jorgie" enjoyed a close circle of friends, and she was considered a "second mom" by many of her children's friends.
She is survived by her children, Barbara (and the Rev. Philip) Lewison, New Richland, Minn., the Rev. Richard (and Caryl) Jorgensen, Faribault, Minn., Betty (and the Rev. Jeff) Rohr, Custer, and Robert (and Carol) Jorgensen, Custer; by 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; by a brother, Jerome Johnson; and two sisters, Francis Bagge and Eleanor Jorgensen.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, with family members present from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m., at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Custer Lutheran Church Fellowship, with the Rev. Dave Van Kley officiating. Burial will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
Helen J. Mann
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Helen J. Mann, 79, Gillette and formerly of Huron, S.D., and Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Denison, Portsmouth, N.H., and Douglas Mann, Gillette; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Juanita Daley and Carol and Mabel Winegar, all of Huron.
Her husbands, Archie Denison and Owen Mann, both preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Rick Funeral Home in Miller, S.D.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brian Jones officiating.
Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens near Huron.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette.
Louis F. Cardamon
HILL CITY - Louis F. Cardamon, 85, of Hill City, died January 29, 2002, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2002, at St. Rose of Lima in Hill City.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2002, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hill City, with Fr. John Heying and Deacon Pat Coy officiating.
Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2002, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Louis was born on January 7, 1917, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Michael and Angelina (Cimino) Cardamon. He joined the United States Army in 1941 and served during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1945. On April 8, 1968, Louis married Inez Anker. He had his own soft ice cream business for many years. Louis was a member of the Elks Club. He was a good husband and father, a good friend to all and had a winning smile!
Survivors include his wife Inez of Hill City and his son Domonic Cardamon of Vancouver, Wash.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer.
William J. 'Doc' Alcorn
HOT SPRINGS - William J. "Doc" Alcorn, MD, 83, died January 29, 2002 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., after a short illness.
A rosary vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2002, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2002, also at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs, with Fr. John Heying and Deacon Pat Coy officiating.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
Doc was born February 16, 1918, in Bridgewater, S.D., to Clifford D. and Elizabeth A. (Gossman) Alcorn. He graduated from high school in Walnut Grove, Minn. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Minnesota Morris and received his medical degree in family medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1943. He married Lois "Bonnie" Hayes on September 5, 1942. She preceded him in death in 1975.
He served in the U.S. Army as a regimental surgeon during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, where he received a Purple Heart. He then practiced family medicine in Wabasso, Minn., until 1969. At that time he entered practice at the VA Center in Hot Springs, S.D., retiring in 1986.
Doc was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener and woodworker. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, AMA. He was a charter sponsor of the Mammoth Site.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Alcorn of Hot Springs; three sons, J. Michael Alcorn of Rochester, Minn., Patrick Alcorn of Red Lake Falls, Minn., and Robert Alcorn of Gordon, Neb.; one stepson, Mike Haldane of Anaconda, Mont.; two daughters, Judy Kerkhoff of Windsor, Colo., and Susan Hubbard of Lincoln, Neb.; two stepdaughters, Benetta Rodacker of Anaconda, Mont., and Patsy Pence of Hot Springs; two brothers, Robert Alcorn and Donald Alcorn, both of Walnut Grove, Minn.; two sisters, Mary Como of Belview, Minn., and Annette Markell of Marshall, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie, and his second wife, Kelly; one infant daughter; and one brother, Jim Alcorn.
A memorial has been established in Doc's memory to benefit St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
William Sowden
BOX ELDER - William Sowden, 52, Box Elder, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, near Box Elder.
Survivors include his wife, Gaiola Sowden, Box Elder; two sons, Walter Sowden, Fort Hood, Texas, and Gregory Sowden, Portland, Ore.; three sisters, Dianne LeCoq, La Mirada, Calif., Vicky Beaudoux, Fountain Valley, Calif., and Linda Easterly, Oakhurst, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City.
