Merlin 'Woody' Woods
RAPID CITY - Merlin "Woody" Woods, 68, Rapid City, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born December 21, 1933, to Charles and Murl Anna (Eby) Woods in Rapid City, S.D. He grew up in Rapid City, attending the Rapid City School System.
Woody was an avid hunter and fisherman. He belonged to the Elks Club for 25 years. He also belonged to the Rapid City Eagles Club and American Legion Post 22. He worked throughout his life as a sales and delivery representative for various businesses, retiring from Witte Beverage in 1987.
Grateful for sharing his life is his wife, Shirley Woods of Rapid City, S.D.; his daughter, Cheryl Kay Payne, daughter Murl Lynn Woods, son Rodney Lee Woods, and Rick Woods, all of Rapid City, S.D.; Randy Woods of Howard, S.D.; Cindy Fasset of Rapid City, S.D.; Raylene Dash of Hermosa, S.D.; and Chris Woods; brother Elwood Woods of Spokane, Wash.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and also step-grandchildren; Kenny Krick and Lonna Reiner, both of Rapid City, S.D.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 6, 2002, one hour prior to service time of 2 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, with Reverend Donald Brendtro officiating.
Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Catherine Patricia Smith
RAPID CITY - Catherine Patricia Smith, 86, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, in Rapid City, S.D. She was born December 8, 1915, in Hebron, N.D., to Henry and Catherine Salmon. Her mother and father left North Dakota in 1918 and moved to Wisconsin, where Catherine attended country school. In 1923, Catherine's family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the Minnesota School of Business.
In 1935, Donald Smith came to visit a former teacher in the area, and he and Catherine began a friendship. On June 19, 1937, they were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and moved to Ridgeview, South Dakota, eventually building a home on acreage they had purchased and gradually stocked with cattle. In 1966, they sold the ranch and bought acreage east of Rapid City, where they built a horse training facility and raised registered Quarter Horses. Over the years, Donald and Catherine had many teenagers come to visit, and they always enjoyed the enthusiasm and love of the animals so evident in the young people.
After Donald passed away in 1987, Catherine moved to an apartment in Rapid City, and in the fall of 2000, she relocated to Holiday Hills Estates, where she was residing at the time of her death.
Catherine's hobbies through the years included playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, square dancing and reading. She loved to attend the area rodeos, especially during the years her special friend, Rosie Ridley, served as Rodeo Secretary. Catherine had a keen interest in life and a genuine thirst for knowledge. She was very inquisitive and always wanted to expand her horizons. She enjoyed her trips throughout the United States and abroad, especially to her homeland of Ireland. Several of her travels were with the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association when she was a member of their CowBelles organization.
Catherine was a member of the Church of St. Therese the Little Flower in Rapid City, South Dakota, and a bridge playing club at Holiday Hills Estates.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and several friends and relatives. Survivors include her cousin, Patty Cina, of Stillwater, Minnesota; her sister-in-law, Hilda Smith of Mobridge, South Dakota; her great-niece, Sally Samuelsen of Rapid City, South Dakota; and many other relatives and friends who were special to her.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of St. Therese the Little Flower, with Rev. Bryan Lane as the Celebrant.
Inurnment will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Erin Prairie, Wisconsin, at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Church of St. Therese the Little Flower in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Cecilia Morehouse
RAWLINS, Wyo. - Cecilia Morehouse, 95, Rawlins and formerly of Hill City, S.D., died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Rawlins.
Survivors include two sisters, Rosella Craig, Bellevue, Wash., and Agnes Cook, Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter, Georgia Ann Thomas, Rawlins; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Hill City. A memorial will be established to Hill City Senior Citizens Center.
Evelyn Ruth Schroeder
HECLA - Evelyn Ruth "Dimpy" Schroeder, 70, Hecla, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Survivors include her husband, William; six sons, Jeffrey and James Schroeder, Hecla, Richard Schroeder, Lincoln, Neb., Robert Schroeder, Rapid City, Thomas Schroeder, San Diego, Calif., and Todd Schroeder, Chamberlain; two daughters, Nancy Knaus, Saskatoon, Canada, and Ann Schroeder, Hecla; one brother, John Fritz, Bath; four sisters, Shirley Andersen, Beltrami, Minn., Beverly Benson, Altamonte Springs, Fla., Bonnie Richards, Orlando, Fla., and Donna Schmidt, Fargo, N.D.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services were held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hecla. Burial was at Hecla City Cemetery.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes was in charge of the arrangements.

Patricia A. Wiman
BAKER, Mont. Patricia A. Wiman, 68, Baker, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Fallon Medical Complex.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Wiman, Baker; one son, Rick Wiman, Baker; three daughters, Shirley Eller, Terry, Kay Wiman, Baker, and Fay Swenson, Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Jean Stanhope, Thermopolis, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, today at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at American Lutheran Church.
Burial will be at Bonnievale Cemetery.
Hilary Paul Larry' Naescher
WALL Hilary Paul "Larry" Naescher, 81, Wall, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Naescher, Wall; three sons, Michael Naescher and John Naescher, both of Wall, and LeRoy Naescher, Oacoma; one daughter, Cleone Cozine, Chamberlain; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary service, Wednesday, Feb. 6, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the church, with the Rev. Bob Baden as celebrant. Burial will be at Wall Cemetery.
Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall is in charge of arrangements.
Merlin Woods
RAPID CITY Merlin Woods, 68, Rapid City, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Woods, Rapid City; three sons, Rick Woods and Rodney Woods, both of Rapid City, and Randy Woods, Howard; and five daughters, Raylene Dash, Cheryl Payne, Murl Lynn Woods and Cindy Fasset, all of Rapid City, and Chris Woods of Washington.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
Edna Kopren
BISON Edna Kopren, 92, Bison, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, N.D.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jean Tescher; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be one hour before services, which will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison, with the Rev. Ed Vanorny officiating. Burial will follow at Bison Cemetery.

Ina Rose Catherine Davis
CUSTER Services for Ina Rose C. Davis, 86, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, S.D., with Pastor Robert Anderson, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Custer, S.D., as officiant. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Custer. She died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, S.D.
She was born July 24, 1915, in Oral, S.D., to J.E. and Vivian (Sheffield) Emick. She moved with her family at a young age to Buffalo Gap where she attended high school.
She married Dave Davis in the early 1930s in Newcastle, Wyo. They were ranch managers for F.O. Butler on a ranch near Hot Springs, S.D. They later worked at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot, Igloo, S.D., and moved to a ranch near Cameron, Mont., once again working for F.O. Butler.
They purchased a ranch on Medicine Mountain Rd. and later a ranch near Custer, S.D. While there, she would milk cows and sell the milk to people in the community. She also helped dye the horses and rode in many Gold Discovery Days parades and was active in the Gold Discovery Days Pageant.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Custer, S.D., and loved animals especially her dogs.
She is survived by her sister Phyllis Hagen, Rapid City, S.D., and numerous nieces and nephews including Lois Emery, Hot Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in April 1985, a brother Wilbur Emick and a sister Lyda "Sue" Bowker.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Custer Humane Society, Custer, S.D.
Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth A. Betty' Isaman
RAPID CITY Elizabeth A. "Betty" Isaman, 85, Rapid City and formerly of Hill City, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Isaman, Rapid City; two sons, Jerry Isaman, Tucson, Ariz., and Robert Isaman, Oviedo, Fla.; one daughter, Jan Roark, Lynchburg, Va.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.
Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Delores Mae Kocourek
BOX ELDER Delores Mae Kocourek passed away at her home south of Box Elder the morning of January 31, 2002.
She was born in Chicago, on February 25, 1957, to Helen Phyllis (Everette) and Tomas Manez Gonzalez. Dee grew up in Michigan City, Indiana, where she completed her elementary and high school studies at Central School.
After her mother married Wilbert R. Ramsey in July of 1959, Dee was adopted into the Ramsey family. In 1982 she was united in marriage with Robert Cushway. Both the Ramseys and Cushways subsequently moved to Rapid City, though at different times.
For many years, Dee was a school bus driver for the Douglas School District as well as a motel desk clerk and retail sales cashier.
On August 25, 1995, Dee and John Kocourek were married in Rapid City. They made their home on Radar Hill Drive south of Box Elder, S.D.
Delores used her special interest and skill in signing to help the deaf. She particularly enjoyed doing signing of religious and inspirational songs.
She leaves behind her husband John, former husband and friend Robert Cushway and his children and grandchildren, Robert and Penny Cushway and son of Rapid City, Sheryl and Keith Fagan and children of Minneapolis, Minn., Michael and Amy Cushway and daughter, of Michigan City, Indiana; as well as a host of friends.
Memorial services will be Monday, February 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary Chapel.
Carolyn Sterling
PIERRE Carolyn Sterling, 65, Pierre, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Charles D. Sterling; one son, John C. Sterling; one daughter, Karen Elaine Luther, Pierre; two sisters, Gwendolyn Jean Hoffer, Reliance, and Joan Rae Sterling, Pierre; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Thelma Hicks
SIOUX FALLS Thelma Hicks, 68, 2411 Oaks Street, died January 31, 2002, at her home, the result of complications from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease.
Her survivors include her husband, Clifford Hicks, Sioux Falls, S.D.; daughters, Cathy Blackwood and her husband, Thomas, Rogers, Ark., Cynthia Hicks, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two grandchildren, Melissa and Jeffery; a special sister-in-law and caretaker, Norma Butterfield; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews who were all special in her life.
Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at First United Methodist Church. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main Avenue, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., to greet friends.
