Ole Viola Maxine Teupel
SPEARFISH — Ole (Viola Maxine) Teupel, 74, of Spearfish, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital.
Viola Maxine Herr Teupel was born Jan. 31, 1927, to Elva May Aslin Herr and Leonard Herr. Her family resided in Camas, Wash., where her father and mother worked for Crown Zellerback Paper Co.
She attended schools in Camas before moving to San Francisco, where she married Sam Teupel on Feb. 5, 1945. To this union were born four daughters, Carolyn (Chris) Underwood, Baldwin, Kan., Marilyn (Marty) Hogen, Black Hawk, Evelyn Squires, Black Hawk, and Debbie Renner, Spearfish; and one son, Merle (Buddy) Teupel, Sioux City, Iowa. Viola loved and nurtured 10 grandchildren, Brian and Mark Richardson, Diane Smith, Vanya and Herb Hogen, Nathan, Oliver, and Edith Renner, Donyell Teupel, and Molly Squires. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Colin Richardson, James Hine-Renner and Levi Renner. She is also survived by her brother, Buddy Herr, and sister, RosaLee Parker.
Ole had a passion and love for life that was evident in everything she did. She loved people, and one of her greatest gifts was to cook and serve wonderful food. She is well-known in the Black Hills as one of the finest cooks in the area. Her youth was spent cooking in restaurants in Lead and Deadwood. After she retired, she spent her time cooking and doing crafts for friends and family. A stop by her apartment for a visit nearly always included homemade cookies, breads, pies or her especially delicious cinnamon rolls.
She was an active member of Lookout Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and each year, along with the others in her apartment building, created a basket of beautifully crafted items for the hospital fund raiser. She also crafted exquisite silk-flower arrangements that were sold in the gift shop.
She cherished all her friendships and in later years left the door to her apartment open day and night. It was not unusual for someone to stop by in the wee early morning or late nights to enjoy her company. The conversation was always lively and uplifting. Card games with her neighbors were filled with good-natured banter. Everyone at 318 Rushmore, her apartment building, became family. Her companionship was cherished by all who knew her because of her fun-loving nature and keen sense of humor.
Ole was a leader who was the first to speak out about an injustice and, as a Nevada Gulch school-board member, in her early years called attention to the poor wages teachers received at the country schools. Her interest in the welfare of people lasted her entire life, prompting her to follow political issues, especially in the Black Hills.
She was a feminist before her time and could hunt, fish and throw a punch as well as any man. Ole loved to grow flowers and feed birds. She enjoyed collecting antiques, especially if the item was a bargain she happened to get at a rummage sale. She was courageous and tenacious and fought a 15-year battle with emphysema. Ole didn't let her illness stop her from enjoying life, and she pushed herself until the end. She was eternally optimistic and always saw the good in both people and situations.
Ole was a caring and dedicated wife and mother who cared for her husband of 50 years, Sam Teupel, through Alzheimer's disease. She was the strength and bulwark of our family and will be always our treasure. Love of life, a generous spirit, humor, optimism, tenacity, nearly boundless energy and hard work is the legacy she leaves her family and friends.
