Melvin T. Norton
HOT SPRINGS — Melvin T. Norton, 76, of Hot Springs, died on March 6, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs, after a long battle with cancer.
Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
A memorial service and Christian Mass will be held in his honor at 10 a.m. Monday, March 12, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hot Springs. It was Melvin's wish for his body to be taken to the University of South Dakota for medical research.
Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
Melvin Tracy Norton was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Buffalo, to Tracy and Christena (Wheeler) Norton. As a young man, he lived on a sheep ranch near Buffalo. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1943. He served in the United States Army from 1945-1947. On Feb. 12, 1947, he married Virginia Dolecheck at McIntosh. They were blessed with three sons, Lyle, Gordon and Mark. They lived in McIntosh until moving to Hot Springs in 1962. While living in McIntosh, "Toby," as he became affectionately known, was employed as a carpenter, the Legion club manager, a salesman for Hettinger Candy Co. and the owner and manager of Toby's Tavern. He went on to become the Director of Equalization in Corson County and in 1962 moved to Hot Springs to assume the duties of Director of Equalization for Fall River County. In 1974, he accepted a position as Field Director for the Department of Revenue for the State of South Dakota. He retired from the position in 1987. He was also a private real-estate appraiser for 25 years.
Melvin was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Holy Family Council No. 6137, a Knights of Columbus lifetime member, the Lions Club, Grass Roots Cribbage Club, ABC member and the South Dakota Assessors Association.
He enjoyed playing cribbage and automotive racing. He bowled for over 30 years and was secretary for the Hot Springs Men's Bowling Association for 15 years. He helped organize the first Demolition Derby in Hot Springs in 1975 and continued to coordinate the yearly Demo Derby for the next 25 years.
Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife, Virginia; sons, Gordon and his wife, JoAnn, and Mark and his wife, Tammera, all from Hot Springs; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Norton of Rapid City; one brother, Lloyd, of Hayward, Calif.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and friend Ray Winters of Rapid City.
He was preceded in death by one son, one grandson, one great-grandson, two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial fund has been established to the Hot Springs Ministerial Association Food Pantry.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills.
Helen Johnson
PIERRE — Helen Johnson, 79, Pierre, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub Acute Center in Pierre.
Arrangements are pending with Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.
Stanley Erickson
SPEARFISH — Stanley Erickson, 82, Spearfish and formerly of Lead, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood.
Survivors include four daughters, Gerry Cass, Flowery Branch, Ga., Noel Erickson, Lead, Susan Heinke, Sioux City, Iowa, and Rebecca Erickson, Hill City; two sons, Stanley Erickson Jr. and Robert Erickson, both of Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Marcella Verstegen and Bernice Featherly, both of Omak, Wash.; one brother, R.G. Bill Erickson, Kulm, N.D.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
Orphie M. Rasmussen
CROCKER — Orphie M. Rasmussen, 97, Crocker, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Sundial Manor in Bristol.
Survivors include four sons, Erlenn Rasmussen, Sioux City, Iowa, Allen Rasmussen, Wessington Springs, Orland Rasmussen, Mendota Heights, Minn., and Elwin Rasmussen, Worthington, Ohio; a daughter, Elaine Blashill, Rapid City; a stepdaughter, Mildred Rindahl, Springfield, Ore.; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Furness Funeral Home in Clark and before services on Saturday at the church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at Crocker Lutheran Church in Crocker, with the Rev. Terry Knudson officiating. Burial will be at Our Savior's East Lutheran Cemetery in Lily.
Joyce M. Frazey
RAPID CITY — Joyce M. Frazey, 30, Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at her home in Rapid City.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour before services Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with Pastor Howard Smith officiating. Private family committal services will be at a later date. A memorial has been established.
Joyce was born Feb. 5, 1971, at Sturgis, to Gary D. and Norma (Dawson) Septka. She grew up on the family ranch near Sturgis and attended schools in Sturgis. She was a member of the God Squad and the First Presbyterian Church and Girl Scouts in her youth. She graduated from Sturgis Brown High School in 1989. She moved to Rapid City after completing her education.
On August 3, 1991, she married George R. Frazey in Sturgis. The couple lived in Rapid City, and Joyce worked at the Sands of the Black Hills and later at Frontier Ceramics. For the last six years, she worked at Black Hills Moulding.
Survivors include her husband, George Frazey, Rapid City; her mother, Norma Septka, Sturgis; three brothers, John Septka, Sturgis, David Septka, Black Hawk, Tim Sheets, Rapid City; three sisters, Kathleen Buckman, Wichita Falls, Texas, Cindy Mack, Tacoma, Wash., Linda Thompson, Randle, Wash.; nephews, Gary Septka, Stephen Pate, Lawrence E. Buckman, V. Justin Frazey, Charles Zimmerman, Tony and Curtis Knutson, Brian Castillo, D.J., Dylan and Joel Duffield; nieces Kayla Frazey, Kimberly Duffield, Angela and Michelle Castillo.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gary Septka; paternal grandparents, Emma "Dottie" and Lance Septka; maternal grandparents, Elizabeth "Betty" and Sterling "Bud" Sheets; and father-in-law, Vern Groce.
Gordon A. Lewis
SPEARFISH — Gordon A. Lewis, 92, Spearfish, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Spearfish, with a Vigil service at 7 p.m., with Rev. Fr. Kerry Prendiville as Celebrant.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Kerry Prendiville and Monsignor James O'Neill as co-celebrants. Burial will take place at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 23, 1908, in Kittscoty, Alberta, to James Edward and Angela McVain (Coutts) Lewis. The family moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where Gordon attended school until the ninth grade.
The family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he graduated from high school. He worked for Carey Ranch, near Cheyenne, S&S Packing Plant, Cheyenne, before beginning his career as a projectionist with Cheyenne Theaters. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. In 1945, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Cheyenne to continue working for the theater.
In 1938, he married Norma Stewert in the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Denver. In 1979, he moved to Spearfish, where he had since lived.
Mr. Lewis was a fourth-degree Knights of Columbus; a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Spearfish; and the VFW Post No. 5960.
He enjoyed gardening and restoring antique furniture. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn with his riding lawn mower. He had a passion for politics, debating and watching football.
Survivors include his daughter, Margaret Lewis, Spearfish; two sons, Jim (and Jane) Lewis, Casper, Wyo., and George (and Katy) Lewis, Roseburg, Ore.; two grandchildren, Kirk Lewis, Denver, and Krystal (and Kevin) Gritten, Michigan City, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, in 1954; and two sisters, Margaret Metzler and Angela Dulin.
Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish has been entrusted with arrangements.
A memorial has been established to the Retired Priests and Scholarship Program.
Marjorie Overholt
STURGIS — Marjorie Overholt, 73, Sturgis, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Yuma, Ariz.
Survivors include her husband, John Overholt, Sturgis; two sons, Greg Overholt, Black Hawk, and Rex Overholt, Gillette, Wyo.; three grandchildren; three brothers; and three sisters.
Arrangements are pending with Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Wendy Ryno
WINNER — Wendy Ryno, 52, Winner, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Sioux Valley Hospital and University Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include two daughters, Annette Stiles, Colome, and Holly Larson, Hamill; three brothers, Bill Greiner, Wall, and Chuck Greiner and Robert Greiner, both of Reno, Nev.; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Mason Funeral Home in Winner, with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner.
Burial will be at Murdo Cemetery in Murdo.
James Roalson
CUSTER — James Roalson, 77, Custer, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include a sister, Jean Stephenson, Earp, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer. Burial will be in Forest City, Iowa, at a later date.
Mary 'Maxine' Paine
CUSTER — Mary "Maxine" Paine, 66, Custer, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital.
Survivors include a brother, Ed Paine, Lincoln, Ariz.; two daughters, Patricia McNelis, Burbank, Calif., and Debra Panuzzo, Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Keith and Timothy McNemar, both of Las Vegas; and a sister, Lois McVey, Hill City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer, with the Rev. Bill Savery officiating. Burial will be at Hill City Cemetery.
Marjorie Mae Forney
FORT PIERRE — Marjorie Mae Forney, 85, Fort Pierre, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas.
Survivors include her husband, Fritz Forney, Pierre; children, Janet Hamill, Atlanta, Dianne Warder, Memphis, Tenn., Sandra Griffin, Florence, S.C., Bonnie Mattick, Phoenix, Paula Forney, Vienna, Austria, and Jim Forney, Paul Forney and Pamela Cronin, all of Pierre; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, with the Rev. David Zellmer officiating.
Donald R. Schaub
CHAMBERLAIN — Donald R. Schaub, 77, Chamberlain, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Mid Dakota Hospital in Chamberlain.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Schaub, Chamberlain; a son, Wes Schaub, Chamberlain; a daughter, Dee Jones, Pierre; two sisters, Alvena Lunn, Pukwana, and Laura Kulm, Chamberlain; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at the church, with the Rev. Richard Fylling officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain.
Jack Nelson
EDGEMONT — Jack Nelson passed away March 6, 2001, in Little Rock, Ark., while receiving treatment for Multiple Myeloma.
He was born in Longmont, Colo., on Oct. 6, 1939, to Margaret (Burns) and Ray L. Nelson.
He grew up on the family irrigated farm, graduated from high school in Erie, Colo., and attended college at Colorado State University. On June 23, 1961, upon graduation, he married Virginia Emery of rural Custer.
After farming in Colorado for a year, the Nelsons moved to Edgemont, where they spent the next 35 years raising their family and establishing Nelson's Oil & Gas, the family business his two sons operate to this date.
In 1995, Jack and Ginger moved to a home near Rapid City. There he enjoyed golfing, motorcycles, volunteer work driving the Naja Shrine Children's Hospital van to Minneapolis, and volunteering at the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.
He is survived by his wife, Ginger, sons Brian (Cyndi) and Richard (Stefanie) of Hot Springs, and five grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, Sarah, David and Adam, whom he dearly loved and enjoyed. He is also survived by one brother, Ralph, Longmont, and one sister, Geri Sarconi (Tony), Espanola, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Margaret (Burns) Nelson, of Longmont.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the United Churches in Edgemont, with the Rev. Marion Gray officiating.
