Lois Jones
RAPID CITY — Lois Jones, 98, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Westhills Village Health Care Center.
She was born Aug. 25, 1902, at White Lake, S.D., the daughter of Jay and Augusta (Gardner) Lobdell. She came with her parents to Caputa in 1910.
Lois attended rural elementary school in Pennington County and high school in Caputa. She went to Spearfish Normal School, where she earned a teaching certificate, and later taught country school for a number of years.
Lois married Lawrence Jones on June 14, 1922. The couple ranched near Caputa until Lawrence's death in 1966. Lois continued to live on the ranch until 1989, when she moved to Westhills Village in Rapid City. She was a member of the Caputa Community Church, First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, Caputa Ladies Aid, UMW, Past Matron of Order of the Eastern Star, Zonta Club of the Black Hills, Ismat Temple No. 119 Deadwood and Daughters of the Nile.
She is survived by two children, Barbara Eckert and her husband, Warren, Seal Beach, Calif., and Walter "Bud" Jones, and his wife, Sonia, Caputa; four grandchildren, Bill Eckert and his wife, Priscilla, Carmel Valley, Calif., Bob Eckert and his wife, Robin, Davis, Calif., Larry Jones and his wife,
Cami, Caputa, and Lynn Schell and her husband, Steve, Caputa; eight great-granddaughters; a sister, Grace Hammerquist, Rapid City; a sister-in-law, Clara Lobdell, Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.
She took great joy in her family, growing roses and playing bridge.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Steve Foss officiating.
Private family graveside services will be held prior to the Memorial services at the Mountain View Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Services are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Myrln E. Bartholow
MITCHELL — Myrln E. Bartholow, 84, Mitchell and formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.
Survivors include her husband, Derrel Bartholow, Mitchell; and one brother, Glenn Schoepf, Sioux Falls.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Christ Lutheran Church in Salem. Burial will be at Spencer Cemetery in Spencer.
Patricia Ann Lurz
RAPID CITY — Patricia Ann Lurz, 72, Rapid City and formerly of Wall, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Lurz, Rapid City; three sisters, Sharon Wyant, Wall, Rita Danielson, Broadus, Mont., and Florence Hagel, Flint, Mich.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at First Lutheran Church in Wall, with the Rev. Ray Greenseth officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Ruth A. Guenther
RAPID CITY — Ruth A. Guenther, 90, Rapid City and formerly of Jamestown, N.D., died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Clarkson Mountain View Guest Home in Rapid City.
Survivors include three daughters, LaVerne Braaten, Jamestown, Marjoline Self, Rapid City, and Ardis McKenzie, Courtenay, N.D.; one son, Jerald, Wasilla, Alaska; one sister, Eleanor Myers, Springfield, Ore.; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, at Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown. A prayer service will be at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eddy Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown, with the Rev. Terry Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown.
Gladys Stewart
HURON — Gladys Stewart, 94, Huron, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.
Survivors include three daughters, Verl Flanery, Huron, Charlys Randall, Mitchell, and Charon Andersen, Spearfish; one sister, Bernice Murphy, Dixon, Ill.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Kuhler Funeral Home and before services at First United Methodist Church in Huron. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the church, with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.
Hazel M. Repass
DENVER — Hazel M. Repass, 96, Denver, and formerly of Spearfish, S.D., died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Denver.
Hazel May Orvold was born on May 22, 1904, at Trail, Minn., to John A. and Thurine (Olson) Orvold. She grew up on the family farm at Trail. She attended school at Concordia Academy in Minnesota and received her two-year teaching certificate in 1924 from Bemidji State Teachers College at Bemidji, Minn. She taught elementary school at Glenwood, Minn., for four years, and served two as Principal. She also taught in Montevideo, Minn., for three years and in Spearfish for three years. She was married to Rex Repass on June 20, 1934, at Spearfish. Her teaching was put on hold because, at that time, married women weren't allowed to teach. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Black Hills Teachers College in 1957, and she taught school in Spearfish for five years. Mr. Repass died in 1973, and Hazel continued to make Spearfish her home until moving to Denver in May 2000.
She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish and taught Sunday School and was a member of the Choir. She was a 50-year member of Chapter N, PEO, Kappa Delta Gamma, Annie Talent Club, Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary and the Spearfish Senior Citizens.
Hazel enjoyed baking, reading, playing bridge, knitting and thoroughly enjoyed life with a hearty laugh and smile.
Those grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Catherine Thorson and her husband, John, of Colorado Springs, and Mary Erickson and her husband, Mike, of Denver; two grandchildren, James Thorson and his wife, Cathy, of Littleton, and Carol Scarbro and her husband, Tom, of Altoona, Pa.; three great-grandchildren, Andrew and Eric Thorson of Littleton, and Drew Scarbro of Altoona; nieces, Marjorie Evans, Wooster, Ohio, Ruth Vahl, Dubuque, Iowa, Rosemary Cole, Canby, Ore., and Judy Hooper, Seattle, Wash.; nephews, Dwight Ambach, Susan, Va., Gordon Ambach, Washington, D.C.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Kent Stillson and the Rev. Randal Fett officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is entrusted with arrangements.
Memorials may be given to Our Savior Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
Floyd G. Sharp
RAPID CITY — Floyd G. Sharp, 84, Rapid City, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born April 23, 1916, at Whitewood, S.D., to Grover and Carrie (Moffet) Sharp. He came from a family of nine brothers and sisters. He grew up in Pennington County and attended schools there and, for a year, went to high school in Phoenix, Ariz.
He married Honor Beaird in Rapid City in 1939. He lived and worked in Rapid City. As a young boy, Floyd helped his father build a store near Porcupine, S.D., which is known as Sharp's Corner. He worked construction most of his adult life, working for Insul-Fibre and R&S (Robbins & Stearns) Construction. He was a foreman for R&S, supervising the construction of many homes on both Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations. He worked for R&S from 1952 to1980.
Floyd enjoyed boat building, was an avid fisherman, gardener and enjoyed camping. He was a founding member of the Black Hills Water-ski Club.
Floyd was a good family man.
His best friend through retirement years was his schnauzer dog, Jacho.
He is survived by one daughter, Valera Gissen, Miami, Fla.; two sons, Donald Sharp of Phoenix, and Dale Sharp of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Noel Adams, Serenity, Ore.; one brother, Walter Sharp, Chadron, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Honor, in 1985; and brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel, with Chaplain Ned Wick officiating.
Burial will be in Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.
Lynn A. Weaver
RAPID CITY — Lynn A. Weaver, 79, Rapid City and formerly of Lead, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, Rapid City; three sons, Lyle A. Weaver, Tahlequah, Okla., Steve A. Weaver and Joel L. Weaver, both of Rapid City; one brother, Darrell Weaver, Yakima, Wash.; one sister, Lavonne Lawien, Belle Fourche; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Chaput Memorial Chapel. Burial with military honors will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Linda M. Spaans
RAPID CITY — Linda Marie Spaans, 34, Rapid City, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at her home.
She was born March 10, 1966, at Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Richard and Veronica (Scholten) Tuschen. She grew up in Salem, S.D., and attended elementary and high school at Salem, graduating from Salem High School. While in high school, she competed in track and basketball.
Linda married Terry Lee Spaans on July 14, 1984, in Salem.
She was employed with Security Mortgage in Rapid City as a loan processor.
Linda was active with the Boy Scout program, played co-ed soccer and was team manager of her son Matthew's soccer team. She enjoyed cross-stitching, reading and attending her son's soccer and football games, but her favorite time was spent with her family.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Terry L. Spaans, and two sons, Matthew Spaans and Jeremy Spaans, all of Rapid City; her parents, Richard and Veronica Tuschen, and brother, Alan Tuschen, all of Salem, S.D.; brother, Tim Tuschen, and his wife, Sara, Omaha, Neb.; sister, Janelle VanWestern, and her husband, Joe, Brewster, Minn., and brother, Steve Tuschen, and his wife, Kim, Sioux Falls.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m., at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding.
A memorial has been established for the Matthew and Jeremy Spaans College Education Fund.
Dexter Ravellette
HURON — Dexter Ravellette, 13, Huron, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include his parents, Ron and Vicki (Fitzgerald) Ravellette, Huron; brothers and sisters, Stephanie Fountain, Maize, Kan., Joshua Smith, Mitchell, Derek Ravellette, Aberdeen, and Dallas Ravellette and Dylan Ravellette, both of Huron; paternal grandmother, Belle Ravellette, Philip; maternal grandfather, George Fitzgerald, Milesville; and paternal great-grandmother Dorothy Vaughn, Burke.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, today at Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron, and before services at the church. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Calvary Baptist Church in Huron, with the Rev. Bill Holmes officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Huron.
Glen Bonnet
WINNER — Glen Bonnet, 80, Winner, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, Winner; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Winner Assembly of God Church in Winner. Burial will be at Winner Cemetery in Winner.
Joan Kay Sapcoe
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Joan Kay Sapcoe, 61, Glendale, Ariz., died Wednesday, March 14, 2000.
Survivors include her husband, George; one daughter, Lisa, Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Michael, Glendale, and James, Mount Airy, Md.; two sisters, Carol Hughes, Blue Springs, Neb., and Patricia Barry, Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, Donald Buckholz, Westin, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Services were in Glendale.
