Gene Allard
LONG VALLEY — Gene Allard, 72, rural Long Valley, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Bennett County Hospital in Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta Allard, Long Valley; a daughter, Donita Denke, Long Valley; a son, Cliff Allard, Long Valley; two brothers, Carl Allard Jr. and Allen Allard, both of Long Valley; two sisters, Ardis Ladely and June Rose Good, both of Long Valley; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ziegler Funeral Home in Martin.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Legion Auditorium in Martin, with the Rev. Terry Olthoff officiating.
Burial will be at Long Valley Community Cemetery with a luncheon and fellowship at Long Valley Lutheran Church immediately following.
Lillian Peggy Baldwin
PIERRE — Lillian Peggy Baldwin, 94, Pierre, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Pierre.
Survivors include her son, Robert Benson, Pierre; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
David J. Peterson
SUNDANCE, Wyo. — David J. Peterson, 85, rural Sundance, Wyo., died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Crook County Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Peterson, rural Sundance; two daughters, Diana Hazekamp, Goshen, N.Y., and Jean Peterson, rural Sundance; and two grandchildren.
Services are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel of Sundance, Wyo.
Fred D. Morgan
RAPID CITY — Fred D. Morgan, 39, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Morgan, Rapid City; stepdaughter, Rahdonda West, Rapid City; stepson, Tim West, Rapid City; mother, Sally Brown, Rapid City; father, Fred Morgan, Rapid City; a brother, Danny Morgan, Rapid City; and two sisters, Sarah Morgan and Geneva Brown, both of Rapid City.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
Maria Antonia (Domini) Spangher
STURGIS — Maria Antonia (Domini) Spangher, 92, Sturgis, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Sturgis Long Term Care Center.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Visitation will also be Thursday from noon until 3 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at 4 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, with Father Tom Campbell officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Italy.
Maria was born Oct. 27, 1908, in Vizinada, Croatia (then Austria), to Girolamo and Elena (Marcovitch) Domini.
She married her beloved husband, Silvestro, in 1932 in Trieste, Italy.
She moved to the United States on Jan. 12, 1959, with her family, eventually deciding to live in Nutley, N.J., where she and her beloved husband, Silvestro, lived for 30 years.
Following her husband's death on Dec. 17, 1990, she lived with her son, Guido, in Florida and Arkansas, then in 1994, the family moved to Fort Meade, then to Sturgis.
Maria, known as "Antonia" to friends and family, loved to cook and spend time with family and friends. Very friendly and outgoing, she loved to socialize and take care of others.
Maria Antonia is survived by her son and his wife, Guido and Pam, Sturgis; her long-awaited baby granddaughter, Isabella Maria; nieces, Mirella and Bruna Domini Monfalcone, Italy; her cousin, Emilia Legovich, Croatia; and dear family friends, Anira DeMattia, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Iride "Lili" Corazza, Lantana, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Silvestro; her seven-year-old son, Carlucci; and brothers, Umberto and Giovanni Domini.
A memorial has been established at St. Thomas Palliative Care Unit at Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Daniel A. Nelson
RAPID CITY — Daniel A. Nelson, 47, Rapid City, died at his home Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, following a one and a half-year battle with cancer.
Daniel A. Nelson was born in Ogden, Utah, on Dec. 4, 1953.
He was a 1972 graduate from Hill City High School.
He married Wanda R. Zoller on June 26, 1976, in Rapid City.
Dan and Wanda owned and operated the Apollo Motel and the Apollo Trucking Co. in Rapid City. Dan was also employed as the Sales Manager at West River International Inc.
For the past 15 years, he has been on the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Trucking Association.
To those of us blessed enough to know Dan, the world immediately grew more interesting — for Dan had a spirit that touched everyone. Dan refused to tiptoe through life, choosing to meet each new challenge or experience with his head held high.
He loved his family with a passion that was awesome to witness. His time with us was brief, but the imprint he left on all of us will never fade.
He will be missed by all of those fortunate enough to have walked alongside him.
Dan is survived by his wife, Wanda Nelson, of Rapid City; daughter, Neasha Nelson; son, Dana Nelson, of Rapid City; mother, Reva Nelson, of Colman; father, Stuart Nelson, of Alzada, Mont.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dwayne and Emilia Zoller, of Rapid City; grandmother, Ruth Maltheson, of Pierre; Dan's brothers, Mike and Barb Nelson, of Denver, Kerry and Cheryl Nelson, of Columbus, Ga., Kelly and Karol Nelson, of Abingdon, Md., Bill and Karen Nelson, of Columbus, Ga.; brother and sister-in-laws, Jerry and Delona Muhlbeier, Troy and Joleen Zoller, Dueene Zoller, all of Rapid City, and Tim and Monica Conrad, of Deadwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and close friends.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a Christian wake service at 6 p.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Blessed Sacrament Church, with Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding.
Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Michael Walczak
RAPID CITY — Michael Walczak, 16, Rapid City, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his parents, Jim and Sandy Walczak, Rapid City; a brother, Steven Walczak, Rapid City; and two sisters, Crystal Walczak and April Walczak, all of Rapid City.
Services are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Wallace F. Irwin
MISSOULA, Mont. — Wallace F. Irwin, 64, Missoula, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Irwin, Missoula; two sons, Donnie Irwin, Hettinger, N.D., and Ricky Irwin, Aberdeen, S.D.; three daughters, Viola Trazma, Missoula, Mary Jangula, Dunnellon, Fla., and Lucinda Hedges, Ravendall, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A family service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stephen Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.
Venetia R. Byerly
WALL — Venetia R. Byerly was born Jan. 19, 1923, at Quinn, the daughter of Harvey A. and Myrna R. (Wheelon) Stone. She grew up on a farm south of Quinn and attended Pleasant Valley rural grade school and graduated from Wall High School in 1941.
She was united in marriage to Victor "Vic" W. Byerly on Sept. 6, 1941, in Chadron, Neb.
After their marriage, they made their home in Interior, until Vic enlisted in the U.S. Army. While he was in the Army, she made her home with her brother and sister-in-law, Vere and Mary Stone in Bellflower, Calif. After his discharge from the Army, they moved to Huron, where he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation. While he worked for the Bureau, they lived in Silver City and Hill City during the construction of Pactola Dam. In 1954, they moved to Wall, where they have since resided. While in Wall, she worked at the Wall Drug Store but was mainly a homemaker. After her husband's death on May 3, 1985, she has continued to reside in Wall.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wall.
Venetia enjoyed fishing, bird watching, cooking and collecting cookbooks.
Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Victor Noll Byerly, and his special friend, Carole Williams, of Wall, Brent Byerly, and his wife, Rita, of Wall; a grandson, Victor Nathan Byerly, of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Warren Stone, and his wife, Madalyn, of Rapid City; a sister-in-law, Mary Stone, of Tucson, Ariz.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Vic Byerly, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Val Stone and Vere Stone; and a sister, Vada Stone.
Funeral services for Venetia R. Byerly, age 78, of Wall, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gary Geiman officiating.
Venetia died Monday afternoon at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour before the services at the church on Friday.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the hospice program.
Scott Douglas Boland
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Scott Douglas Boland, 31, of Anchorage, Alaska, and formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, near Eureka, Alaska, as a result of an avalanche accident.
He was born March 2, 1969, in Rapid City to Leo and Bernice (Newman) Boland. Scott grew up in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City Stevens High School in 1987.
He attended Colorado Air Technical Institute in Bloomfield, Colo., graduating in 1988, as an honor student. He worked for Evergreen Airline in Tucson, Ariz., Brussels, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and Tokyo, Japan. He transferred to Alaska in October of 1991. At the time of his death, Scott was chief mechanic on the Boeing 747 for Polar Air Cargo.
Scott loved aviation and was a commercial pilot and flight instructor. He also loved reading, snowmachining, biking, hunting, fishing and was a true Alaskan outdoorsman. Scott was successful in all that he did and had a caring and comic personality. He loved his family and friends and was generous to all.
He is survived by his completed half, Jennifer Heiden, Anchorage; his parents, Leo and Bernice Boland, Rapid City; three brothers, Martin Boland, Rapid City, Lt. Mark Boland, Savannah, Ga. (serving on the NOAA ship, Ronald H. Brown), and Cadet Brian Boland, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Katherine Boland, Rapid City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, at the church, with Rev. Douglas Klein presiding. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
