Michael J. Hessman
DENVER — Michael John Hessman, 56, passed peacefully to the Lord from his home in Denver on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001.
Mike was born June 20, 1944, to Leo and Shirley (Johnson) Hessman in Rapid City, and attended Rapid City school from kindergarten through college, graduating from Rapid City High School in 1962 and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1967.
He married Roxana Samuelson in 1970.
Mike had a 32-year career in the advertising and communications industry, starting with Northwestern Bell in 1968 and retiring from US West Dex in 2000 to battle brain cancer. He excelled in business and won an unprecedented four "Dolphin Awards" for his corporate achievements and leadership.
He loved golf, dogs and had a passion for sports cars.
As a husband and father, family man, friend and lover of life, he lived to the fullest.
Survivors include his wife, Roxie and daughter, Erin, both of Denver; his sister, Julie Brown, Reno, Nev.; his brother, Dave Hessman, Rapid City; his parents, Leo and Shirley Hessman, Rapid City; and his grandmother, Anne Johnson, Pensacola, Fla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Christian Life Ministries, P.O. Box 9272, Rapid City, SD 57709.
Wesley E. Limbo
AURORA, Colo. — Wesley Eugene Limbo, 74, Aurora, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Aurora Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Limbo, Aurora; one daughter, Leslie Limbo, Aurora; one brother, Ray Limbo, Enumclaw, Wash.; and four sisters, Jessie Mann, Fox Island, Wash., and Delores Bachand, Hannah Pederson, and Emma Aldren, all of Sturgis, S.D.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. James Olson officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Lydia R. Black Bear
WOUNDED KNEE — Lydia R. Black Bear, 82, Wounded Knee, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Eugene Black Bear Jr. and Curtis Black Bear, both of Wounded Knee; three daughters, Bernice Spotted Eagle, Wounded Knee, Alberta Black Bear, Rapid City, and Darlene Red Star, Pine Ridge; one adopted daughter, Sharon Hudson, Forest, Va.; one brother, Seth Eagle Bear Sr., Wounded Knee; one sister, Ester White Face, Porcupine; 36 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Two-night wake services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the church, with the Rev. Pedro Sharpfish and the Rev. Ernest White Eagle officiating.
Traditional Lakota services will be conducted by Mike Little Boy.
Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Wounded Knee.
Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Hersey
SPEARFISH — Ruth Hersey, 95, Spearfish, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Hersey, Bothell, Wash., and Gary Hersey, Nisland; one daughter, Ruth Schutz, Rapid City; one sister, Grace Leaks, Portland, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at All Angels Episcopal Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Bunker Hill and the Rev. Phillip Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
Ruth Ellis
ONIDA — Ruth Ellis, 89, Onida, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in Minneapolis.
Survivors include one daughter, Janet Liedle, Cottage Grove, Minn.; one son, Charles Ellis, Pierre; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Onida Presbyterian Church with burial following at the Onida Cemetery.
William John Husband
BELLE FOURCHE — William John Husband, 60, longtime Belle Fourche pharmacist, passed away Jan. 29, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche and one hour before the service at the church. Thursday night at 7 p.m. will be a Christian Wake Service at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche. Father Arnold Kari will be celebrant.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to the Belle Fourche High School Track and the Belle Fourche High School Theatre.
Bill was born March 29, 1940, in Rapid City to Charles Maxwell and Clar Marie (Hughes) Husband. He was raised in Philip and graduated from high school in 1958.
After graduation from the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1962, Bill was employed by Osco Drug in Joliet, Carpentersville, Elgin and Springfield, Ill.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, Germany. He attained the rank of captain and was discharged in 1972.
Osco Drug employed Bill in East Dundee, Ill., from 1969 to 1971, when he moved his family to Belle Fourche. He purchased Becker's Drug, then owned Husband's Drug in Belle Fourche until 1983. Since 1983, he had owned and operated The Medicine Shoppe in Belle Fourche. He received his Pharmacy Doctor certificate Jan. 25, 1982.
Bill was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Lion's Club, and was currently a board member of the West River Foundation and Butte County Housing Authority. He served three terms as a school board member of Belle Fourche School District from 1984 through 1993 and was board president from 1988 through 1990.
Bill was a past board member of the Belle Fourche Chamber of Commerce, Belle Fourche Country Club, Belle Fourche Area Community Center and the Community Council for Education.
William J. Husband married Constance M. Wiemholt on April 4, 1964, in Elgin, Ill. His wife, his daughter, Kimberly Husband, of Bloomington, Minn., and his daughter, Lindsay, and her husband, Jeff Brown, of Fargo, N.D., survive him.
Also surviving are his mother, Clar Marie Husband, of Philip; one brother, Tom Husband, and his wife, Karen, of Philip; two sisters, Joel Peterson, and her husband, Gary, of Faith; and Kathy Emerson, and her husband, Greg, of Cody, Wyo. He had eight nieces and seven great-nieces and nephews.
Theodore Emil 'Ted' Brown
PORTLAND, Ore. — Theodore Emil "Ted" Brown was born Jan. 9, 1908, to Joseph W. and Alice (Pourier) Brown at LaCreek, Bennett County, S.D. He was the third youngest child of 14 brothers and sisters. He is survived by one son, Melvin Edward, and daughter-in-law, Cheryl, of Camas, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews and their children throughout the country.
Ted moved to the Portland area in 1943. He was a line worker for Milwaukee Plywood in 1975; since that time, Ted was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Parish in Portland.
Memorials have been established at St. Vincent de Paul, 2740 S.E. Powell Blvd., Portland, OR., 97202, and at his parish, Our Lady of Sorrows, 5221 S.E. Knight Street, Portland, OR., 97202.
Ted was a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul and Our Lady of Sorrows for all his retirement years.
He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, carrying meals to people younger than himself.
Uncle Ted was a prayerful, self-giving person, always looking out for the welfare of someone other than himself. He was very much loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was the last survivor of his family — the end of an era.
Services were Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. Burial was at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Mount Scott Funeral Home in Portland.
Joyce Elaine Conner
RAPID CITY — Joyce Elaine Conner, 55, Rapid City, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Rapid City.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bill Paepke officiating. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Home of Sturgis.
Joyce was born June 13, 1945, at Sheridan, Wyo., to Urban "Tim" and Thelma Achenbach. She attended school in Sheridan and lived there until 1970. Joyce moved to Butte, Mont., and lived in several places in Montana before moving to Rapid City in 1980, where she had lived since.
Joyce married Kerry Conner on Oct. 28, 1989, in Rapid City. She was very active and was a friend to many elderly people.
Joyce loved her dogs, Rusty and Cocoa, and all the wildlife and animals around her home.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was the past secretary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Christian Women's Club, craft clubs, and the Quilter's Guild. Joyce was the past president of the Chapel Lane Homeowners Association and was a member of the senior citizens.
Survivors include her husband, Kerry Conner, Rapid City; one daughter, Jodie Remington, Piedmont; one stepson, Kelsey Conner; one brother, Tim Achenbach, Sheridan; and three grandchildren, Charity Keesee, Sarah Remington and Cynthia Remington.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Memorials have been established to the American Lung Association and to the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
Carroll B. Nelson
LEAD — Carroll B. Nelson, 83, Lead, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Dorsett Home in Spearfish.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Ammons, Lead; one son, Lanny Nelson, Aladdin, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Christ Church Episcopal in Lead, with the Rev. Ron Hennies officiating.
Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Velma Cox Pease
PIERRE — Velma Cox Pease, 75, Pierre, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at home.
Survivors include one brother, Walter Cox, Swansea, S.C.; and four sisters, Wilma Hoppe, Modesto, Calif., Betty Zurnwalt, Milaca, Minn., Laura Enter, Nicollet, Minn., and Lola Enter, Henderson, Minn.
A private committal service was held Monday, Jan. 29, at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
Feigum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Roger Jones
FAULKTON — Roger Jones, 77, Faulkton, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at home.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Levin, Westminster, Colo.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Donald Jones, Altamonte, Fla., John Jones, Archer, Fla., and Ralph Jones, Newberry, Fla.; one sister, Dorothy Parker, Faulkton; and one half-brother, Herman Jones, Letcher.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 29, at United Church of Faulkton.
Committal services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with the Rev. Donald Hadrich officiating.
