Robert Big Elk was born in Macy, Neb., on Jan. 7, 1944, and is of Omaha and Sioux descent. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, N.M., from 1963 to 1968. He graduated from the institute's high school program and successfully completed the two-year postgraduate program. Big Elk had delved into every course available, from printmaking, painting, and sculpture to dance and drama, when he finally found what he truly loved in "Earth, Water and Fire" stoneware!
In the summer of 1967, Big Elk attended the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine, to further his skills in pottery. Big Elk was a full-time student at the University of Colorado at Boulder 1978-1979. Much of his professional experience was chiefly volunteer work. Big Elk was generous and patient; he taught young people out of concern for "traditional maintenance" and bridged the cultures through the creative process. On the other end of the spectrum, he found fulfillment in teaching pottery-making as therapy in drug/alcohol rehabilitation centers.
Big Elk was a Sun Dancer and attended many of the Spiritual Unity of Tribes gatherings.
He is survived by his partner, Sue Conner of Farmingdale; children, Kelsey Conner and Jason Conner, both of Rapid City, Marisa Neuzil of Woodland Park, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Jackson and Riley of Woodland Park; Hunka Family, Patricia Locke and Nona Locke, both of Mobridge, and Kevin Locke of Aberdeen; many special friends and extended-family members; and Sun Dance brothers and sisters.
