RAPID CITY — Sylvia Szakacs, 79, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include five daughters, Sylvia Ladenburger, Rapid City, Sharon Hooker, Omaha, Neb., Ruth Nix, Des Moines, Iowa, Lila Boydston, Lisco, Neb., and Susan Roth, Merriman, Neb.; one son, Charles Szakacs, Rapid City; three sisters, Donna Brown, Tampa, Fla., Theresa Atwood, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Kay Kellar, Humansville, Mo.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary.
Elizabeth G. Burnham
RAPID CITY — Elizabeth G. Burnham, 60, Rapid City, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at a local nursing home.
She was born July 22, 1940, in Rapid City, to Walter and Elouise (Russ) Sanders, her family pioneered in Rapid Valley and the Bald Hills.
She was raised and attended schools in Rapid City, and attended Seventh Day Adventist Academy at Redfield. She also lived in Arkansas and Missouri. She worked most of her life for her father at Sander's Apartments.
She is survived by three sisters, Berta Barker of Akron, Ohio, Linda Wells of Los Alamos, N.M., and Stella Bucknam of Holiday Island, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her father, W. Ray Sanders, mother, Elouise Brown, and stepmother, Bernice Sanders.
Graveside services and burial will be Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.
Arrangements are with Behrens Mortuary.
Julia Bradley
STURGIS — Julia M. Bradley, 87, Sturgis, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include four sons, James Bradley, Aurora, Colo., John Bradley, Beaverton, Ore., Dennis Bradley, Spokane, Wash., and Michael Bradley, Sturgis; two daughters, Marilyn Smart, Newberg, Ore., and Diane Tarno, Spearfish; one brother, William Higgins, Mandan, N.D.; two sisters, Daina Dunbar and Clara Hornstra, both of Sturgis; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 p.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Oreshoski officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Alma Haux
RAPID CITY — Alma A. Haux, 77, Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at her home.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianne Mashek, Rapid City; one sister, Marion Schilling, Dallas; one brother, Forrest Hughes, Houston; several nieces, nephews and cousins; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Margaret Blythe
BELLE FOURCHE — Margaret G. Blythe, 89, Belle Fourche, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Blythe, Belle Fourche; two children, Kenneth Blythe, Lakeport, Calif., and Shirley Blythe, Santa Ana, Calif.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
George Skinner
RAPID CITY — George Francis Skinner, 81, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, LaVonna Skinner, Rapid City; one son, Donald Skinner, Rapid City; one daughter, Janet Peters, Rapid City; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Skinner, Sturgis.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary.
Mary Elizabeth Marnette
RAPID CITY — Mary Elizabeth Marnette, 77, Rapid City, died at a Rapid City nursing home Friday, Jan. 5, 2001.
She was born at Mankato, Minn., on Oct. 29, 1923, the daughter of Leo and Frances (Salisbury) Schulte. She grew up and graduated from high school at LeSueur, Minn. After high school graduation, she attended secretarial school in St. Paul-Minneapolis before accepting a position with the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C.
Mary Elizabeth married Richard A. Marnette on Nov. 3, 1947, at LeSueur, Minn. He was serving in the military, and the family lived in numerous areas of the country, including Maryland, Texas, North Dakota and South Dakota, and in Japan. She had been a resident of Rapid City since 1960. She was employed by selective service for a number of years with the South Dakota National Guard at Camp Rapid as a secretary to Gen. Duke Corning, followed by a distinguished career as a court reporter in the office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Mary exemplified the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to duty throughout her career. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, Richard "Rick" Marnette II, Rapid City; one daughter, Patricia Marnette of Denver; one brother, William Schulte of Fort Worth, Texas; two grandsons, Richard Marnette III, Rapid City, and Tadd Ryan Marnette of Denver; three great-grandchildren, Kholten Marnette, Shay Marnette and Brooke Marnette.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Foss officiating.
Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society or the South Dakota Lung Association.
Kristi Magee
FORT PIERRE — Kristi Magee, 39, Fort Pierre, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Magee Jr., Fort Pierre; one son, Bryce Magee, Fort Pierre; one daughter, Karisa Magee, Fort Pierre; her parents, Milo and Pat Hoenscheid of San Antonio; and two sisters, Cheryl Mathis of El Paso, Texas, and Kara Hughes of Pierre.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. wake service Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Pierre. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10. Burial will follow at Scotty Philip Cemetery.
Bonnie Bennett
KENNEBEC — Bonnie Bennett, 63, Kennebec, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Survivors include her mother, Meta Hollenback, Hot Springs; two daughters, Faye Scott, Kennebec, and Deb Reindl, Wood; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Kennebec Gymnasium, with the Rev. Lori Hope officiating. Burial will be at Kennebec City Cemetery.
Cindy Connot
MURDO — Cindy Connot, 40, Murdo, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Winner.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Connot, Murdo; one daughter, Sonia Connot, Rapid City; one son, Lane Connot, Murdo; one grandson, Dylan Kinsley, Murdo; her parents, Dennis and JoAnn Harvey, Wood; maternal grandmother, Tina Sorlie, Hudson; one sister, Penny Mitchell, Arlington; and four brothers, Wes Harvey of Yuma, Ariz., Scott Harvey of Belle Fourche, Clinton Harvey of Wood and Darwin Harvey of Mitchell.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at Murdo United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Morris Nelson officiating.
Roberta May Clarin
BOX ELDER — Roberta May Clarin, 73, Box Elder, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Clarin, Box Elder; four daughters, Donna Hirchert, Jan Holbrooks and Joan White, all of Rapid City, and Pam Welling, Gainsville, Idaho; a son, Ed Clarin, Box Elder; a sister, Lois Mitchell, Park Rapids, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Steven Noble
TULARE — Steven K. Noble, 50, Tulare, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include two daughters, Kristi Noble and Rebecca Arroway, both of Rapid City; two granddaughters, Alyssa Cummins and Codi Rae Nelson; one brother, Thomas Noble, and one sister, Patricia Howe, both of Sioux Falls.
Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. today at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Thelen Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Waisanen officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Larry Skog
RAPID CITY — Larry Jay Skog, 57, Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include two daughters, Tina Garfield and Yvonne Campagna, both of Porterville, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters Kay Lynne Stewart of Port St. Luciz, Fla., and Judy Lea Hoar, Box Elder.

Lavern R. Stevens
RAPID CITY — Lavern Ray Stevens died January 7, 2001, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Lavern ("Steve" "Sonny") was born in Yankton, S.D., on Oct. 27, 1933, the first-born of Mamie (Obr) and Ray Stevens. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1951 and went to work for his uncle in the auto salvage business. From 1954 to 1956 he served in the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he was encouraged by his commanding officer to pursue a college education, and in 1956, with the help of the G.I. Bill, he enrolled at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. While a student at Tech, he was active in track, football and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He held the school record for the 440-yard dash from 1960 until 1966. He graduated from Tech in 1960 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
On March 6, 1960, he married Coral Etta ("Co") Todd in Sturgis. In June 1960, they moved to East Hartford, Conn., where Lavern was employed by Pratt-Whitney Aircraft Co. In 1964, Lavern completed a master's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Connecticut. In 1965, Earl Dake asked Lavern to return to Tech to teach in the Civil Engineering Department, thus fulfilling Lavern's long-standing dream of returning to Tech. In 1969, Lavern took a two-year sabbatical and pursued post-graduate civil engineering courses at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lavern retired from Tech in 1996 after teaching for 31-1/2 years. He never lost his love for teaching the young students who wanted to learn; his door was always open for help sessions or just to talk.
Lavern was a registered Professional Engineer. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has been a member of the Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department and had served as president and treasurer of the Whispering Pines Water Association. He was a member of the Historical Auto Club of the Black Hills and had served as its president and secretary. Lavern was an active member of Canyon Lake United Methodist Church and United Campus Ministries. He was an avid follower of Tech athletics. For several years he timed the varsity wrestling meets and men's basketball games. In later years, he especially enjoyed following the Lady Hardrocker basketball team.
Lavern was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Coral Etta ("Co") of Rapid City; a daughter Sandra Thielen and her husband Paul of Rapid City; a son Todd Stevens and his wife, Martha, of Rochester, Minn.; and a daughter, Dr. Stephanie Stevens of Edgemont. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Trevor and Troy Thielen of Rapid City and Samuel, Zachary and Elizabeth Stevens of Rochester, Minn. He is survived by a brother, Gary Stevens and his wife, Audrey, of Yankton, and two uncles, Millard Stevens and his wife, Lillian of Yankton, and Tom Sternhagen and his wife, Polly, of Avon. He is also survived by four special cousins: Clayton Sternhagen of Groton; Margo Nedved of Sioux Falls; DuWayne Obr of Yankton; and Larry Obr of Waco, Texas; as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sarah, in 1987, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Ruedebusch officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Stevens Family Scholarship Fund at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, or to Canyon Lake United Methodist Church.
George Stec
RAPID CITY — George P. Stec, 70, Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Stec, Rapid City; a son, Michael Stec, Rapid City; a daughter, Maureen Zimney, Rapid City; three brothers, Alfred Stec and Stanley Stec, both of Long Pine, Neb., and Peter Stec, Oglala, Neb.; three sisters, Pauline Kosmicki, Denver, Berneice Voller, Beatrice, Neb., and Teresa Morrison, Ainsworth, Neb.; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Lenard Murraine
RAPID CITY — Lenard E. Murraine, 61, Rapid City, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Janice, Rapid City; three children, Lenard, Mathew and Sabrina; five grandchildren; and five siblings, Mitchell, Opal, Virgie, Dolly and Mary.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Behrens Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Coats officiating.
