James M. Christensen
RAPID CITY — James M. Christensen, 66, of Rapid City, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at his home after a two-year battle with cancer.
Jim was born on June 2, 1934, in Deadwood, to Milton Joseph and Florence Ann (Perkovich) Christensen. He grew up in the area and graduated from Lead High School. He attended and graduated from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1957. Jim was married to Nancy Lervaag on July 25, 1955, at Immaculate Conception Church in Rapid City.
After graduating from SDSM&T, Jim began working for the Veterans Administration Engineering Division in Sturgis. He moved to Fargo, N.D., in 1960 after being promoted to Chief Engineer at the VA facility there. He continued to rise rapidly through the VA system, serving as Chief Engineer at successively larger facilities in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Portland, Ore. Jim loved the engineering profession and turned down an administrative promotion with the VA to accept a job with Lennox Industries in Portland. A year later, he became Executive Vice President at Dunham Associates, a consulting engineering firm in Rapid City. It was a chance to join college classmates George and Nancy Dunham in their private venture and to return to his beloved Black Hills and family still there. Jim was a key part of the firm's growth to a multi-office engineering company. A national trade magazine later recognized Dunham Associates as one of the top 20 consulting firms in the United States. He retired in 1993 as one of three senior partners. In 1994, Jim joined Lund Associates as general manager of the architectural firm, retiring again in 1997. During his professional career, Jim obtained licensed professional engineer status in four states.
Jim was an active member of the Consulting Engineering Council of South Dakota, South Dakota Engineering Society, ASHRAE, Elks Lodge 1187 and was on the board at Arrowhead Country Club. He was a strong supporter of SDSM&T, its Alumni Association and Foundation. At the time of his death, he was serving as Chairman of the Foundation's investment committee. He had previously served six years as the Alumni Association's Executive Vice President and co-chaired the Foundation's Vision 2000 Capital Campaign. Jim was a founding member of the "Old Jocks Club," a group pledged to endow athletic scholarships at Tech. His efforts were honored in 1999, when Jim was named one of the first four recipients of the SDSM&T "Distinguished Alumnus Award." Jim strongly believed in the school's ability to educate and motivate students to professional excellence. As a result, he created and funded the "Christensen Endowment" to benefit the entrepreneurial efforts of Tech students.
Jim was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. In the days before his death, he said he considered his greatest reward to be that he was able to know all his grandchildren and "what fine people they are." He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling and wine making.
