Myrtle O. Lee
RAPID CITY — Myrtle O. Lee, 91, Rapid City, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Clarkson Mountain View Guest Home in Rapid City.
Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Lozano, Mexico, and Phyllis Engleman and Doris Lee, both of Missouri.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Church of the Whispering Pines in Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City, with a visitation one hour before the service.
Services are under the direction of Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Alice S. Swanson
RAPID CITY — Alice S. Swanson, 92, Rapid City, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
Arrangements are with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
Bernice Marie Wood
ALADDIN, Wyo. — Bernice Marie Wood, 92, Aladdin, Wyo., died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Survivors include her brother, Harry Bushby, LeMars, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Geneveve Forbes, Palm Harbor, Fla.
There will be no public viewing in accordance with her request for cremation. There will be a private family service at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Merlin O'Haver officiating.
William 'Bill' Schmidt
EDGEMONT — William "Bill" Schmidt, 83, Edgemont, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edgemont, with the Rev. Kevin Clark officiating.
Inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
William was born on May 10, 1917, in Mission, to William Andrew and Elaine Goodale (Keith) Schmidt. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served during World War II and received the Bronze Star.
He was honorably discharged on Jan. 17, 1946. He married Clara T. Hando on July 11, 1958, in Newcastle, Wyo., at the Episcopal Church.
He taught in both Sundance, Wyo., and Edgemont in public education. In 1961, he chartered the first National Honor Society in Edgemont. He also worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a Superintendent of Schools at Lower Brule and Crow Creek.
Bill retired in 1991 after four decades of dedicated service to the teaching profession. Bill liked to read, travel and have coffee with his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Clara T. Schmidt, of Edgemont; a son, Gary Finch, of Edgemont; two daughters, Susan Mohr, of Maryville, Tenn., and Robyn Finch of Elko, Nev.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Lourine Hancock, of Belle Fourche; and two nephews.
A memorial has been established to the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools at Edgemont High School. Donations may be mailed to Edgemont High School, in care of Susan Hendricks, EHS adviser.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Isburg-VandeBossche's Chapel of the Hills, Edgemont.
Raymond R. Kolb
LEMMON — Funeral services for Raymond R. Kolb, 81, long-time West River aviator, will be Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemmon. The Rev. Timothy Wheaton will officiate. Burial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Date Cemetery, near the Kolb ranch southwest of Bison. Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and St. Luke's Church.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, and for one hour before the services at the church.
Mr. Kolb passed away on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Raymond R. Kolb was born on March 4, 1919, to Rudolf and Amelia Kolb at their ranch near Date, in rural Perkins County. He grew up there, attended the rural Reder School and high school in Mobridge and Bison.
He took an early interest in aviation and was trained at Spearfish and Fort Collins, Colo.
During World War II, he trained Army and Air Force Pilots at Chickasha, Okla. There, he was united in marriage to Betty Crawford on July 3, 1943.
After the war, they returned to Lemmon and operated Lemmon Aircraft for many years. He was instrumental in developing the Lemmon Airport over the years and was the only certified mechanic, inspector and pilot examiner in West River country.
He flew many hours in service to his community and the rural area, hauling children and teachers to school, transporting the sick and flying supplies to the snowbound.
He served as an officer of the South Dakota Aviation Association and received many honors, including the Retired Aviator Award in 1983, having the Lemmon Airport renamed Ray Kolb Field and being inducted into the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame in 1997.
After selling Lemmon Aviation in 1975, he continued helping the new owners and flew as a slurry pilot for his brother at Black Hills Aviation in Spearfish. He influenced many aviators and students over the years.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Betty, of Lemmon; sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Diane Kolb of Tijeras, N.M., and Lowell and Marilyn Kolb of Loveland, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Lee Boman of Richland, Wash.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Simon of Newell and Deanna Kensrud of Fargo, N.D.; five brothers, Arnold of Alamogordo, N.M., Ernest and Eldred, both of rural Bison, Vernon of Lemmon, and Delbert of Sturgis; many nieces and nephews; and aviation friends in a wide area.
Charles H. Edwards Jr.
PICKSTOWN — Charles H. Edwards Jr., 73, of Pickstown, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at his home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes, with burial following in the Minnehaha Cemetery, Colton. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Clements-Wiese Funeral Home in Lake Andes.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Clements-Wiese Funeral Home in Lake Andes.
Charles H. Edwards Jr. was born Jan. 24, 1927, to Charles and Myrtle (Carlberg) Edwards in Sioux Falls. He attended grade school and high school in Lyons. He enlisted in the Army in 1944, a day after he graduated from high school. He completed training at Fort Benning, Ga. He belonged to the 82nd Airborne and received his Paratrooper Wings. He attended North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D., and South Dakota State University, Brookings. He married Gloria Boen on Aug. 1, 1950, in Sioux Falls. He worked for the Sweetman Construction Co. for five years, then the Corps of Engineers at the Fort Randall Dam for 32 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes, and a charter member of the American Legion Post 282 in Pickstown. Charles will be remembered for his love for family, outdoors, hunting, fishing and his special friend, his dog, Josie.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria, Pickstown; four children, Darcy Lekness and husband, Dave, of Rapid City, June Zimmerman and husband, Keith, of Chokia, Minn., Doug and wife, Denise, of Brandon, and Dana and wife, Marla, of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, James and wife, Evelyn, of Brookings, and Donald and wife, Gloria, of Eagle River, Alaska.; one sister-in-law, Doris Edwards of Farmington, N.M.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lendal Edwards; and one stepgrandson, Shane Lekness.
Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, Lake Andes.

MURDO — Edwin J. Aske, 79, Murdo, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Aske, Murdo; one daughter Jo (Susie) Erickson, Pierre; two sons, Bob Aske and Jim Aske, both of Rapid City; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Murdo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at United Methodist Church in Murdo, with the Rev. Maurice Nelson officiating.
Burial will be at Murdo City Cemetery.
Harriet C. Smith
MITCHELL — Harriet C. Smith, 80, Mitchell, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Rapid City.
Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Brinkman, Rapid City; one son, Roger Smith, Mitchell; one sister, Wilma Sweesy, Long Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell.
Arlie Elshere
KEYSTONE — Arlie Elshere, 63, Keystone, and formerly of Milesville, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas.
Survivors include his wife, Danielle Elshere, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; one son, Steven Elshere, Bloomington, Ill.; three daughters, Laura Sever and Julie Furchner, both of Rapid City, and Jennifer Kennedy, Las Vegas; two sisters, Phyllis Hanrahan, Philip, and Linda Connor, Englewood, Colo.; one brother, Paul Elshere, Philip; and seven grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
George H. Bryan
WASTA — George H. Bryan, 86, Wasta, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Bryan, Wasta; and two sisters, Allegra Dawson, St. Louis, and Aletha Wood, Lexington, Neb.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at United Methodist Church in Wall, with the Rev. Gary Geiman officiating.

HOVEN — Mary G. Hackl, 97, Hoven, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven.

Rapid City; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. today to time of services on Tuesday, Jan. 23, with a 7 p.m. wake service today, all at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph D. Short officiating.
Burial will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Hoven.

BOULDER, Colo. — Kathleen Ann Blue, 44, Boulder, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at her home.
Survivors include her parents, Belva and George Blue, Huron, S.D.; two brothers, Jim Blue, Fort Collins, and Tom Blue, Rapid City; and maternal grandmother, Elsie Meyer, Huron.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Boulder.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Dorino De Lazzer officiating.
Burial will be at Loveland Burial Park in Loveland.
