Francis M. 'Frank' Diggins

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Frank M. Diggins died in St. Paul on Jan. 19, 2001. He was born in Fort Berthhold, N.D., on May 2, 1927, the son of Francis and Gertrude (Eich) Diggins. Frank spent his childhood in North Dakota, graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo in 1947, and attended Black Hills State College. He married Jean E. Groethe in Rapid City in 1955 and made his home there for many years.

Frank was "the" bass player in dance bands in the Midwest, and worked with famous jazz players in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Rapid City Symphony Orchestra. He was a music instructor in public and private schools in Rapid City, Sturgis, Dupree, Isabel, Pollock and Philip, S.D.

Frank was a loving father and inspiring musician. His stories, advice and friendship will be treasured.

He is survived by friend and ex-wife, Jean; one daughter, Kathryn Rustad and husband, James; seven sons, Peter and wife, Nichole, Thomas and wife, Leah, Robert and wife, Mari, John, William, James and David; seven grandsons, David, Robert, Alex, Felix, Keenan, Evan and Elijah; one brother, Patrick, and wife, Bertie; two sisters, Trudy and husband, Bill Hayes, and Mary and husband, Ed Remley; his sisters-in-law, Rosemary, Helen and Laura; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and four brothers, John, George, William and wife, Betty, and Alfred.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 23, in St. Paul.

Visitation in Rapid City will be at Behrens Mortuary on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with burial services on Friday, Jan. 26, at Mount Calvary Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Arlie LeRoy Elshere

MILESVILLE — Arlie LeRoy Elshere, 63, Milesville, died Sunday, Jan. 21, at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas.

Survivors include his wife, Danielle Elshere, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; one son, Steven Elshere, Bloomington, Ill.; three daughters, Laura Sever and Julie Furchner, both of Rapid City, and Jennifer Kennedy, Las Vegas; one brother, Paul M. Elshere, Philip; two sisters, Phyllis Hanrahan, Philip, and Linda Connor, Englewood, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour before the service at the church on Friday, Jan. 26.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at United Methodist Church in Philip, with the Rev. Gary Wahl officiating.

Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

Teresa S. Wysk

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — Teresa S. Wysk, 44, Silverthorne, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Preston, Silverthorne,; her parents, Hans and Gertrude Wysk, Casper, Wyo.; one brother, Larry Wysk, Berkeley Springs, W. Va.; two sisters, Ramona Collins, Spearfish, and Diana Johner Gillette, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with the Rev. Randy Fett officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Doris I. Krebs

RAPID CITY — Doris I. Krebs, 85, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at a local Rapid City nursing home.

She was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Quinn, to George and Laura (Dubler) Kruse. Doris graduated high school in 1932. She married Wilson J. Krebs on Sept. 15, 1935. The couple lived, ranched and farmed southeast of Quinn until retirement in 1979. They then moved to Rapid City.

Doris enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading.

She is survived by one son, Larry Krebs, and his wife, Judi, Littleton, Colo.; grandson Matthew Krebs, Denver; granddaughter, Victoria Krebs, Lafayette, Colo.; nieces, Laura Schaffer, and her husband, Larry, Rapid City, and Carol Rae Jarvis, and her husband, Lyle, Philip; and great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Douglas Free officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Elaine 'Susie' Kirkpatrick

BOX ELDER — Elaine "Susie" Kirkpatrick, 56, of Box Elder, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital as a result of cancer.

She was born Sept. 2, 1944, at Lemmon to Hiram and Elizabeth (Janish) Crow. She attended school in Lemmon and in 1963 was married to Kenneth Zent. The couple were divorced in 1972, and on Oct. 18, 1973, she was married to Conrad (Kirk) Kirkpatrick. They lived in Lemmon until 1981. The couple then moved to Billings, Mont., and moved to Rapid City in 1987.

Elaine was a partner at Sam's Club.

Survivors include her husband, Conrad "Kirk" Kirkpatrick, Box Elder; four sons, Kenneth Zent Jr., Great Falls, Mont., Rory Klien, Chamlin, Minn., Steve Klien and Kerry Klien, both of Minot, N.D.; four daughters, Nancy Kadrmas, Grassy Butte, N.D., Stephanie Clark, Burlington, Vt., Deanna Moriarty, Rapid City, Vicki Duchsherer, Velva, N.D.; a sister, Ellen Mock, El Centro, Calif.; two brothers, Jack Crow, San Angelo, Texas, and Robert Crow, Bison; 19 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister in infancy.

Visitation will be at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Bossman officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.

Glenn H. Hurd

STURGIS — Glenn H. Hurd, 73, of Sturgis, passed away at Fort Meade Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Sturgis on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, after a long illness.

In keeping with his wishes, his body was cremated and a memorial service, with burial at Black Hills National Cemetery, will take place at a later date.

Glenn was born Jan. 31, 1927, at Cavour, to Glen A. and Irene (Whiting) Hurd.

He grew up on the family farm and attended rural grade school and Huron High School.

He enlisted in the military in 1944 and served his country until 1969, when he retired.

He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marl (Bud) and Wanda Hurd of Hermosa, Lowell and Harriet Hurd of Big Fork, Mont.; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Betty Hurd, of Spearfish.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and B.W. Capell.

Arrangements are with the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Ida Husaboe

CUSTER — Ida Husaboe, 94, Custer, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.

Harlan Leroy Haynes

AURORA, Colo. — Harlan Leroy Haynes, 79, Aurora, Colo., formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Hospice of Metro Denver in Aurora, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Haynes, Aurora; two daughters, Sharlan Pierce, Tempe, Ariz., and Cindy Morris, Parker, Colo.; one son, Mark Haynes, Aurora; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora.

Burial of cremains will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, with military honors. The Rev. Lester G. Felker will officiate.

Amida Barbara Lawrence

SPEARFISH — Amida Barbara Lawrence, 94, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility, Spearfish.

She was born Oct. 9, 1906, in a sod home at Herrick, to John and Katharine (Trautman) Serr. In 1911, she moved with her family to a farm near Dupree. She attended rural school and Dupree High School, and assisted her father on the family farm.

On Nov. 26, 1925, she married Roy Harold Lawrence in Isabel, and they farmed near Dupree. In 1929, they moved into Dupree. Following Roy's death in 1974, she continued to make her home in Dupree until 1992, when she moved to Spearfish.

She was a past Noble Grand of Rebekah Momento Lodge No. 159, a past president of Edwin Hodgdon American Legion Post No. 24 Auxiliary, and the Community Club, all of Dupree. She was a charter member of the Marifu Extension Club, Dupree, which was the first extension club organized in Ziebach County in 1926; Amida was the first secretary-treasurer.

She was also a member of the Foothills Extension Club and the Senior Citizen Center, both of Spearfish. She was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ, worked as a Sunday school teacher, was active in the Women's Fellowship, and served on many church boards. She enjoyed the music of the church and assisted in janitorial maintenance.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, music, visiting and traveling. She liked to entertain, and her home was always open to guests.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Rudy) Stradinger, Spearfish, and Beverly (Mrs. Robert) Huckins, Pierre; one son, Ronald R. Lawrence, Rapid City; one sister, Amy Brown, Eugene, Ore; and brother, Gustaf (and Dorothy) Serr, Dupree; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four sisters; and three brothers in infancy.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Spearfish United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. There will be visitation at the church before the service.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and the Dupree High School Scholarship Fund.

Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Clifford Mills Butts

RAPID CITY — Clifford Mills Butts, 75, passed away on Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after an eight-month battle with cancer.

Clifford M. Butts was born on Dec. 15, 1925, to Clifford R. and Bernice B. Butts in Aberdeen, S.D. He grew up in Janesville, Wis., and graduated from high school there in 1943. He attended Janesville College, Black Hills State College, and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, one year each, respectively.

Clifford enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1943, and served in World War II in that branch at the rank of Radar Man Third Class until 1946. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve at a rank of Radar Man Third Class and the United States Air Force Reserve at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was united in marriage to June M. Fitzer on Dec. 31, 1949, in Rapid City. They made their home in Rapid City and were blessed with three children, Gary, Terry "Buzz," and Carol.

Clifford Butts worked for the United States Postal Service as Superintendent of Mails and Director of Operations for 28 years. He also actively participated in the Pennington County Sheriff's Office Senior Volunteer Program, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Rapid City Police Reserve, South Canyon Lutheran Church and the National Rifle Association.

Cliff was an avid gun collector and had a passion for building and operating model aircraft and trains.

Clifford M. Butts was preceded in death by both of his parents: his first wife, June M. Butts; his brother, Harvey C. Butts; and his sister, Virda A. Butts. He is survived by his sister, Floyda Sauer; his three children, Gary Butts, Terry "Buzz" Butts and Carol Church; his special and dear friend, Stella Tusing; his grandchildren, Clacey Johnson, Jessica Pintozzi, Jennifer Edwards, Cherice Church, Dustin Church, Kyle Butts, Derek Butts, Amy Butts and Kayla Butts; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at South Canyon Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery after the service, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

A memorial has been established.

Shelby Lyn Short Horn

KYLE — Shelby Lyn Short Horn, was stillborn Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his mother, Melanie DuBray, Kyle; his father, Victor Short Horn, Kyle; one brother, Robert Desersa Jr., and two sisters, Rosie and Patricia Desersa, all of Kyle; maternal grandmother, Beverly Black Cat, Denver; and paternal grandparents, Mernertte and Eugene Short Horn, both of Kyle.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at St. Stephen's Catholic Cemetery in Kyle, with the Rev. Joe Darnhorst, S.J., as celebrant.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Thomas Tuel

STURGIS — Roy Thomas Tuel, 79, Sturgis, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Tuel, Sturgis; two sons, Jim Tuel, Kennewick, Wash., and Mike Tuel, Elko, Nev.; two daughters, Judy Clark, southern California, and Peggy Tuel Hanson, Seattle; one brother, James Tuel, St. Maries, Idaho; stepchildren, Tim Fenner, San Diego, Calif., Vonda Osman, Haysville, Kan., Jimmy Fenner, Pasadena, Calif., Todd Fenner, Philip, Melvin Addams, Laluz, N.M., and Terry Kennard, Denver; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, and Thursday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. until service time at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating.

Burial with military honors by Sturgis Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
