Bernice P. (Fuks) Cwach, age 90, of Yankton, S.D., entered into heaven on Friday, September 14, 2012.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2012, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7 p.m. rosary and 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Bernice was born on the family farm between Utica and Tabor, S.D. to Joseph & Alphia (Kralicek) Fuks on May 8, 1922. She was the oldest of three girls. Bernice attended Peterka District 46 Grade School until 8th grade, and then she stayed home to help on the farm. She married Melvin Cwach, a farmer, on January 15, 1942, and they had three children together.
After Melvin's return from World War II, the couple enjoyed many years of farming until moving into town in 1974. Bernice loved her family above all things, and also enjoyed gardening, traveling, baking and playing cards. She worked at Gurney's Seed & Nursery part-time in the early 1970's, and at Cimpl's from 1976 to 1988. She made many friends in both places. Bernice also thoroughly enjoyed baking biscuits and visiting with early morning customers when she began working at Hardee's in the late 1980s.
Melvin died in 1983. Bernice met and married George Mueller on February 14, 1988. They enjoyed their years together, making many bus trips from coast to coast until George's death in 1996.
Bernice always looked forward to her biweekly visits to the Yankton Senior Citizens Center to play pinochle. She was famous for her kolaches, and wouldn't be found at any gathering without them or her dumplings or crazy crunch popcorn.
Bernice was a feisty lady and enjoyed life and the companionship of her family and many friends. She was very proud of the fact that she lived independently her entire life.
Bernice was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and later St. Benedict Parish. She served as a member of the Sacred Heart/St. Benedicts Ladies Altar Society and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Melvin and George, son, Roger Cwach, grandson, Jerry Cwach, sister, Velma Sorenson and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Bernice had a kind and giving heart and will always be remembered and cherished. She leaves behind her son, Darrell Cwach and wife Mary Kay, her daughter, Lynette Hansen and husband Steve, all of Yankton, S.D., 10 grandchildren with their spouses, 29 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sister Nadean Auch, sisters-in-law, Lenora Law and Linda Mueller, brothers-in-law, Marvin Gall and Ed Cwach, godfather to all of Bernice and Melvin's children, along with several nieces and nephews.
Emil Fischer, age 91 of Menno passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the Freeman Hospital, Freeman, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 15, 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno with Rev. Theresa Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites by Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152, Menno. Visitations will be from 5:00-7:00 PM, Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno with the family present. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Dustin Fischer, Derek Fischer, Douglas Schaeffer, Fred Schultz, Tim Tiede, and Ron Schaeffer. Honorary pallbearers: His great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends at Menno Lumber.
Emil Edward Fischer was born to Robert and Karoline (Preszler) Fischer on October 4, 1921 at their home near Menno, SD.
He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Menno, SD. He was confirmed in Troy, SD by Rev. Okdale.
During his youth, the family moved and farmed in Rockham, SD; Troy, SD; and Watertown, SD. Emil completed the eight grades required in those schools. Than, Emil worked for various farmers.
Emil was drafted and served in WWII. He began his service in 1942 and was honorable discharged in 1945. He served in the 143rd Field Artillery Battalion. While in the service, he received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Rifle Sharpshooter, and Good Conduct Medal. After the war ended, Emil returned to Menno where he farmed.
On March 16, 1952, he married Selma (Sally) Schaeffer at the Salem Reformed Church in Menno. They farmed southeast of Menno until 1979 when they moved into Menno.
Emil started working at the Menno Lumber Company. He worked there for 20 years. During that time, he continued to help on the farm. Farming was his joy.
Emil and Sally had two children: Thomas Robert Fischer and Carol Ann (Cj) Fischer. Emil enjoyed spending time with his children and especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Menno. Emil was involved in the Grace Lutheran Brotherhood where he served as Treasurer and attended the meetings regularly. He served as Sunday School Superintendent as well as Church Treasurer. Throughout the years, he served his church on various committees.
Emil is survived by his wife, Selma Fischer of Menno, SD; son, Thomas and Cindy Fischer of Menno, SD; daughter, Carol (Cj) Fischer and Jan Eric Christopherson of Citrus Heights, CA; Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren: Dustin Fischer of Sioux Falls, SD; Derek Fischer of Menno, SD; Aubrianna Hurley-Fischer of Sioux Falls, SD; Graydon Hurley-Fischer of Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Edna Schoppert of Menno, SD; sister, Ella Thayer of Oroville, WA; brother, Al Fischer of Oroville, WA; sister-in-law, Maxine Fischer; and six nephews and five nieces.
Emil is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Karoline Fischer; infant brother, Paul Fischer; brother, Wilhelm "Bill" Fischer; brother, Herbert Fischer; sister, Frieda Fischer; sister, Annette Reich; sister, Caroline Stroud; brother, Art Fischer; sister-in-law, Ann Fischer; sister-in-law, Susie Fischer; brother-in-law, Ervin Reich; brother-in-law, Clair Baumgardner; brother-in-law, Gene Thayer; brother-in-law, Gene Stroud; brother-in-law, Andrew Flattum; and brother-in-law, Benny Schoppert.
Adeline Marie Frick, age 79, of Yankton, SD entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Avera Sister James Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, February 18, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton at 10:30 AM, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 17 at 5:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM and a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory in Yankton. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Adam Frick, Tyler Frick, Brandon Frick, Charlie and Nate Stephenson, Todd Schlup, Mike Schlup and Jim Penn. Honorary Pallbearers are the retired Yankton Volunteer Fire Department Auxilliary members.
Adeline was born June 21, 1933 on a farm near Lesterville to Rudolph and Lillian (Skorepa) Totusek. She attended grade school in rural Utica and Lesterville and graduated from Scotland High School in 1951. Adeline married Gerald Frick on February 23, 1954. In addition to being a dedicated stay at home mother and in home day care provider, she worked at Contractors and Builders Supply, Gurney Seed and Nursery, and Earl's Mini Market. In her later years, she especially enjoyed working with the Sisters as a receptionist at Sacred Heart Monastery.
Adeline enjoyed cooking, boating, walking, traveling, shopping, spending time with friends, and dancing. She was an active member of the Yankton Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a proud parent and grandparent. She was always a great supporter of the family's hunting and fishing hobbies, and especially enjoyed the time spent on the river with family and friends. She also loved conversation and visits with her grandchildren, as well as attending their activities. Her family greatly admired her strength and courage in her battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis in the last decades of her life. She will always be remembered for her big heart and warm smile.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald of Yankton, SD; six children: David (Brenda), Steve (Linda), Dan, Brian (Susie), Tom (Roxanne), and Lori (Rob) Stephenson, all of Yankton, SD; 12 grandchildren: Adam (Kendra), Jacque, Tyler, Rachel, Brandon, Becky, Michael, Savannah,and Austin Frick, Charlie, Nate, and Halle Stephenson; 3 great-grandchildren: Boston, Cooper and Jake Frick; brother-in-law, Bob Penn of Wayne, NE; special friends, Karen Edler of Yankton, SD and Kaylee Larson of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mavis Penn, and grandson, Elijah Stephenson.
Adeline will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace.
Leonard Gleich, age 91, of Yankton, left this earthly world in the early morning hours of Monday, December 24, 2012 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Joe Gleich, David Wells, Terry Haas, Tim Haas, Brian Dobesh, Trevor Haas and Dylan Haas.
Leonard was born October 15, 1921 to Joseph and Albina (Pokorney) Gleich. He was baptized in the Lakeport Church, rural Yankton, SD and attended Lakeport School, District 13. He farmed all his life ten miles west of Yankton, SD. He belonged to the Farmers Union Coop, Moose Lodge, and National Farmers Organization (NFO). His life revolved around his farm work which he shared with his parents and brother, Emil.
He is survived by 4 nieces: Mary (Russell) Steffen of Rising City, NE, Monica (Warren) Haas of Yankton, SD, Judith Van Kley of Columbus, NE, and Theresa Wells of Yankton, SD; 4 nephews: Edward Gleich, John (Jane) Gleich, James (Shannon) Gleich, and Robert Gleich, all of Yankton, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Emil, and sister-in-law, Rita.
Richard Francis Schweitzer age 67 of Viborg, SD, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, February 11, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church (Idlywilde) rural Freeman, SD with Rev. Mathew Vazhappilly officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be at 6:00 PM, Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a Wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Roger Schweitzer, Jr. Matt Lowe, Dean Eli, Daniel Eli, John Pederson, and Louie Crowe. Honorary Pallbearers are his grandchildren: Shane Kozak, Ashley Schweitzer, Tyler Kozak, Connor Teichroew, Hunter Teichroew, and Tanner Teichroew.
Richard was born May 30, 1945 in Yankton, SD to Ralph & Alice (Heinisch) Schweitzer. He married Peggy Lee on April 22, 1967. He bought is farm in 1975 and took great pride in his land and livestock. In his spare time he attended tractor pulls where he brought home several trophies. He held threshing bees at the farm where he would showcase his antique tractors. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; son, Richard (Dicky) Jr. of Viborg, SD; daughters, LoriAnn (Eric) Copper of Irene, SD and Priscilla (Justin) Teichroew of Yankton, SD; brothers: Roger (Linda) Schweitzer of Utica, SD, Bobby (Connie) Schweitzer of Viborg, SD, and Ronnie Schweitzer of Freeman, SD; sister, Darlene (Kilmer) Christensen of Viborg, SD; five nieces: Sherry, Brenda, Amy, Jess and Kayla; three nephews: Roger Jr., Larry and Todd; six grandchildren and his dogs, Ottis & Roscoe (Little White Dove).
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary Schweitzer.
Michael Hento age 53, of Avon, SD passed away Thursday, December 06, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, December 10, 2012 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield, SD with Rev. Dave Reck officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD at approximately 1:15 PM Monday afternoon. Visitations will be from 3-6 PM, Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tyndall, SD. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Michael was born March 8, 1959 in Yankton, SD to John and Agnes (Novak) Hento. He grew up on his parents' farm and wanted to be a farmer since he was a child. He was the proud owner of John Deere equipment and treasured all of it. He was a hard working business man who worked off the land, loved his cows and they loved him. He liked to laugh, joke around, play practical jokes, and loved playing games with his grandchildren. He was very giving and a good friend to all that knew him. His accomplishments were: Gold Key John Deere Tractor (this year), a carpenter (built his own house), handy with his hands, liked being a self-made man and being his own boss.
Michael is survived by his special friend, Candy Cota of Avon, SD; sons, Scott (Lynda) Hento of Ipswich, SD, and Tanner Hento (Sara Boyum-Fiance') of Vermillion, SD; daughter, Amy (Eric) Schofield of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Devin, Klase, Grace and Kallen; and his mother, Agnes Winckler of Spray, OR.
He was preceded in death by his dad, John Hento.
Orlein M. Hevle, age 89 of Yankton, SD, died Friday, November 16, 2012 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Memorial Service will be at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton, SD. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Orlein was born April 20, 1923, in Yankton, SD to Olaf and Tilly (Lynstad) Hevle. He was married to Mary Joyce Moderegger on March 7, 1944 in Yankton, SD and worked for the City of Yankton for 38 years. His hobbies included fishing, horses, coffee and visiting with his friends.
He is survived by his son, Doug (Valerie) Hevle, Yankton, SD; 4 grandchildren, Amy (Brian) Fox, Yankton, SD, David Hevle Rapid city, SD, Sarah Hevle, Sioux Falls, SD, Missy (Richard) Heimes, Sioux Falls, SD; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren, Brian (Tracy) Ogstad, Crofton, NE, Jon (Nikki) Ogstad, Wausau, WI and Chad (Jodi) Ogstad, Yankton, SD; 7 step grandchildren; and sister, Gladys Chapman, Madison, WI.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, sons, David and Mike, parents, Olaf and Tilly, and sister, Dorothy Olson.
Dolores (Dee) Jean (Almond) Horacek, age 84 of Yankton, died peacefully in her home on March 15th, 2013 after a year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Dee was born in Miller, SD to Carl and Georgia Almond on April 28th 1928. She lived in Miller until graduating high school. After graduating she went out east to be a nanny and attend art school. Shortly she returned home to South Dakota State University where she met the love of her life, Fran Horacek.
They were married on November 11, 1950 in Miller, SD. They moved to Yankton where they began raising their family. After over 20 years in Yankton they moved to Kadoka, SD where they opened up The Mercantile Store. They lived in Kadoka for 14 years where they made many friends and enjoyed western South Dakota life. Upon returning to Yankton they opened a men's clothing store, The Outrigger, where they both worked until deciding to retire.
For the remaining years of her life, Dee enjoyed watching and playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing bridge with all her friends, participating with the ladies of the Red Hat Society, sewing, painting, gardening, and making anyone she met laugh.
She was a strong and active person that lived life to the fullest. In her last year of life she gave the advice for everyone to life and their family and to not sweat the small things.
Dee is survived by her husband Fran Horacek (Yankton), her children: Lynne(Doug)Nelson of Yankton, SD; Matt Horacek of Hartford, SD; Luke Horacek of Yankton, SD; Mary(Andy) Echtermeyer of Steamboat Springs, CO; Lisa Horacek of Steamboat Springs, CO; Margaret Stewart of Yankton, SD; and Jamie Horacek of Browns Park, UT. Grandchildren: Jason(Jill Sternquist) Nelson, Heather (Justin) Olson, Sarah Horacek, Mason Horacek, Derrik Nelson, Jacob Stewart, Sam Stewart, Emma Stewart, and James Stewart all of Yankton, SD. And great-grandchildren: Easton and Xavier Nelson; Burkley and Mathea Olson.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and infant brother and sister.
