Joe built one of the first modern milking parlors in Yankton County in the 1950's and was a pioneer in conservation farming in the 1960's using the latest tillage practices and equipment. Joe married Irene Vlasak on April 30, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church in Yankton. After returning from their honeymoon in 1952, Joe never missed a morning or evening milking until 1973 when he won a trip to Hawaii through the O'sGold Seed Company. When things were stressful, Joe's favorite saying was "Oh Himmel" which meant Oh Heaven. Joe believed that Sunday was a day of rest from farm work and would spend the day visiting with family and friends. He would often take milk, cream, fruit, and vegetables from his garden to shut-ins and friends in town. He had a passion for gardening and loved to share the fruits of his labor. Although Joe couldn't travel, he loved geography and spent hours studying maps and reading about faraway places.
