Dorothy Emma Mahler was born on June 23, 1920 to Herman and Ida (Zimmer) Mahler in Fergus Falls, MN. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School and worked at the McCormick Deering Implement that they ran in Fergus Falls. She was a reserved lady who didn't often tell stories, but occasionally, things would slip out! She would talk about how she drove the large trucks and tractors from the dealership and how shocked the men would be when she jumped out. With a sparkle in her eye, she would casually mention about how you could "whip cookies" on the frozen lake in the middle of Fergus Falls if you knew exactly where to drive the car between the barriers. Dorothy was living in Fergus Falls after the war when she started dating a dashing Navy electrician named Bernard Peterson. They were married on May 9, 1947 and were together until Bernard's death in 1995. Over their married time, they lived in several places in ND including Lansford, Velva, Devils Lake, Bismarck, and Hazen. They had two children, Jeffrey and April. Dorothy was an independent woman of strength, perseverance, faith, kindness, gentleness and love. She taught her children what was important in life. Since Bernard's death in 1995, Dorothy resided in Williston, ND with her daughter until entering Bethel Lutheran Home in January 2009. Dorothy loved animals, and enjoyed napping with her cat, Meg. She spent the last weeks of her life in Yankton living near her grand-daughter and enjoying her great-grand children.
Dorothy loved being at the cabin on Crystal Lake in MN. The calm MN nights with the songs of the loons in background always seemed to speak to her soul. She loved to play cards and was competitive, even though her team usually lost. Dorothy enjoyed many things about life, but mostly she loved to spoil her grandchildren. She made the best liverwurst sandwiches and always was ready with a hug, a smile, and that sparkle in her eye when they were around.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, April of Williston, ND; granddaughter, Beryl (Byron Olson) of Yankton, SD; grandsons, Brendt Peterson of Denver, CO and Bryce Peterson of Marshall, MN; daughter-in-law, Kandice Vandendriessche of Marshall, MN; great-grandchildren, Brynann and Bryton; many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy has gone on to be with her Lord; her husband, Bernard; son, Jeffrey; parents; brothers, Herman and Richard; and many other extended family members. She will be greatly missed here.
