Luvern E. Cwach, age 82 of Yankton died on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Rev. Ken Bain officiating and Msgr. Carlton Hermann concelebrating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton. Visitations will be from 1-9 PM, Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be his Grandsons: Matthew Froehlich, Carl Livingston, Tony and Alex
Becker, Brandon Peterson, and David Jesse Frank. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Hatwan-Kortan American Legion Post #183 of Tabor, and all veterans who serve our country.
Luvern Ernest Cwach was born December 27, 1925 to Joseph and Katherine (Bloch) Cwach in Yankton County, Yankton, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. He attended 1st-8th grade at Fairview School #16 and attended Yankton High School for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. He then graduated in May of 1943 from Lesterville, High School. On August 30, 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII where he was a diesel mechanic on small boats in South Hampton, Hampshire, England and then was a truck and jeep driver in France. His boot camp and training was completed in Idaho, Delaware, Florida, and boarded his ship for Europe in New Orleans. As part of the preparations for the invasion of Normandy, Luvern traveled on LST or Higgens boats that gave the orders the night before the attack. His last weeks of service were spent working at a war prisoner's camp and also spent as a minesweeper in Tokyo Bay, Tokyo, Japan. He was honorably discharged on April 7, 1946 as a Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class. Luvern married Leona Mazourek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, SD on June 27, 1950.
He was a farmer all his life raising Black Angus cattle and hogs. Farming was his pride and joy. On November 4, 1966 he purchased his own farm and lived there for over 40 years. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, a life member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post 791, Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post #183, Czech Heritage Preservation Society, Farmers Union, and the Antique Auto Club. He enjoyed his bride of 57 years, his family, traveling, playing cards, gardening, grilling, telling jokes, and playing polka music every Sunday.
Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Leona Cwach of Yankton, SD; five daughters: Norma Froehlich of Sturgis, SD, Donna (Gary) Peterson of Madison, WI, Ruth Frank of Yankton, SD, Nancy (Darrell) Livingston of Yankton, SD, and Renee (Gary) Becker of Yankton, SD; 13 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren; one brother, Elmer (Dorothy) Cwach of Gering, NE; and two sisters: Angela Lindstrom of Yankton, SD and Mavis (Dewie) Gaul of Sioux City, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clarence Cwach, a sister, Lorraine Dallas, sons-in-law: David Frank and Lorin Froehlich.
Blanche M. Ekern, age 100, of Yankton, SD passed away on Friday, December 07, 2007 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitations will be from 7-9 PM, Monday, December 10, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:30 PM rosary followed by an 8:00 PM scripture service. Pallbearers will be Gail Peterson, Mark Peterson, Steve Ekern, Tim Ekern, Brian Goeden, and Mark Dvoracek.
Blanche was born August 13, 1907 at Menominee, NE to John and Frances (Lockman) Baysinger. She grew up in the Crofton, NE area and attended country school through the eighth grade. She married Alfred Ekern September 12, 1927. Together they had made their home in Yankton, SD since 1950. She worked in the main kitchen at the Human Services Center for over 21 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, Yankton Moose Lodge, and the VFW Auxiliary, Yankton, SD.
Blanche's memory is cherished by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and daughters-in-law, Coreene Ekern and Polly Ekern Kniffen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; her five children: Shirley Peterson, Audrey Ceck, Rolyn Ekern, Dick Ekern, and Joseph Ekern, two brothers, and six sisters.
William E. Fejfar, age 94, of Tabor, SD, passed away early Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the George S. Mickelson Center for the Neurosciences Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 16, 2008 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil and Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Friday, at St. Wenceslaus Church with a scripture service followed by a rosary at 7:00 PM. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Tabor, is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born June 21, 1913 on the family farm at Janousek, 6 miles east of Tabor, to George and Anna (Vavruska) Fejfar. He attended Peterka School, Utica High School, and Yankton High School.
He married Helen Sestak Sept. 15, 1936 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD. He farmed and worked for Archer Oil Co. until 1945 when they purchased a bar in Tabor, which later was known as Bill's Bar. During this time he also owned and operated the Tabor Theatre. In 1955, the bar was sold; he then worked for the Tabor Lumber Coop and sold feed and seed out of his home until 1964. From 1964 until his retirement in 1983, he worked as a custodian for the Tabor Public Schools. Bill drove the Tabor School Bus for almost 30 years. He also operated a printing business from his home for over 30 years. He served as a Tabor fireman for 33 years. Bill served on the School Board, the Town Board, B-Y Electric Board, was a member of the Tabor Chamber of Commerce and served on the Czech Days Committee. He also drove the Tabor ambulance for many years. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Catholic Workmen Lodge #93, the Catholic Sokol Social Club, the Czech Heritage Society and Tabor Senior Citizen Center. Bill was a 25 year member of the Yankton Moose Lodge.
He is survived by 7 sons, Adolph (Erika) of Niceville, FL; Donald (Rita) of Tabor, William Jr. (Laura) of Yankton, Joseph (Jan) of Kansas City, MO; Edward (Karen) of Schuyler, NE; John (Ione) of Custer, SD; Charles (Virjean) of Sioux Falls, and one daughter, Anne (Daryl) Mello of Yankton; 27 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 2007, his parents, six sisters, four brothers, a daughter, Florence, in 1998, a granddaughter, Susan in 1978, a great-granddaughter, Helen Ann Bernard in 2002 and a daughter-in-law, Joan Fejfar in 2005.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in his name.
Glenn Foster, age 78, of Newcastle, NE, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church, Wynot, NE with Rev. Michael Keating officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wynot, NE. Visitations will begin at 3:00 PM, Friday, December 14, 2007 at Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church, Wynot, with a Vigil service with rosary at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD, is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Dave Otteman, Doug Otteman, Tyler Kruse, Nickolas Foster, Eric Schulte, George Hite, Benjamin Hite, Michael Foster, and Troy Hite. W. Glenn was born November 28, 1929 to George and Kate (Wiedenfeld) Foster in rural Hartington, Nebraska. Glenn attended Holy Trinity High School in Hartington. On May 2, 1952, Glenn married Norma Ketter in Wynot, NE. Glenn farmed most of his life and most recently worked for the county driving gravel truck and operating road graders. In 1982, he helped in the building of a ferryboat, the Missouri River Queen, which ferried cattle to Goat Island for over 20 years.
Glenn is survived by his children: Connie Otteman of Fremont, NE, Larry (Marilyn) Foster of South Sioux City, NE, Audrey (Dan) Pinkelman of Gayville, SD, Russell (Vickie) Foster of Phoenix, AZ, Wanda (Duane) Kruse of Rockwell, IA, Laurie (Don) Schulte of Hartington, NE, Claudia (Greg) Hite of Bismark, ND; one sister, Vera Pietz of Hartington, NE; one brother, Don (Mary) Foster of Hartington, NE; 22 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Gary Otteman, and brother-in-law, Al Pietz.
Milton "Mickey" Freng, age 95 of Yankton and formerly of Volin, SD passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial will be approximately 12:30 PM at the Faith United (Zion Lutheran) Cemetery in Volin, SD with military rites by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume one hour prior the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Larry Highland, Richard Freng, Larry Toepher, Tom Freng, Lanny Gustad and Ronald Mathison.
Mickey was born January 30, 1913 to Peter and Marie (Hoxeng) Freng on the family farm in Volin. He graduated from Volin High School. Upon graduation, he farmed with his father until 1942 when he was inducted into the Army Air Force at the age of 29. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then returned to farming. He married Ruth Bjornebo on August 22, 1962 in Mission Hill, South Dakota. He continued to farm until his retirement in 1990 when he moved to Yankton. Ruth passed away in 1995. Mickey became a resident of the Avera Yankton Care Center in January 2006. Mickey loved to play pinochle and watch sports. He was left-handed and had a quick pace. He cherished the times he spent with his nieces and nephews especially the Sunday afternoons hitting fly balls to them. Mickey will be remembered for his open hand and heart and for always being there for his family.
Those who will cherish his memories are his sister Aves Rockwell of Missoula, MT, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, his brothers, Clifford, Clifford Thelmas, Sylvester and Percy, his sisters Inez Mathison and Opal Freng.

Joseph F. Goeden, age 90, died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, December 28, 2007 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Thursday (today), at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by scripture service and memorial video tribute. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be his grandsons: John Shepherd, Keith Goeden, Brooks Goeden, Travis Goeden, Shannon Goeden, Trevor Goeden, and Bill Shepherd. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Granddaughters; Rhonda Dehler, Tami Schwartz, and Tasha Snoozy, Great Grandchildren, Members of the Yankton Antique Auto Association, Lee Goeden, Dennis Novak, and Michael Ryan.
Joe was born March 20, 1917 at Menominee, NE to Michael and Anna (Wubben) Goeden. He was born and raised on a farm near Menominee, NE and attended Menominee school through the eighth grade. His family moved to Fordyce, NE in 1939. He served during WWII beginning July 4, 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945. A month before he departed for military service he married Ethel Christensen on June 18, 1942 at Sacred Heart Church in Yankton, SD. Upon his return from service he began work at Gurney's as maintenance foreman and then a short time as foreman at the Hudson Garage and then foreman for Kadous Construction. Joe went into business for himself opening Goeden Construction in 1953. His two sons Kent and Raymond joined him in 1983 with Kent continuing today as Goeden Construction.
Joe was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post 791, life member of the Yankton American Legion Post, life member of the Yankton Senior Citizens Center, honorary life member of the Yankton Knights of Columbus where he attended a 3rd degree, Past Chairman of the Boy Scouts Leaders, and President of Goeden Construction.
His memory is cherished by his wife Ethel of Yankton; children: Kent (Ruby) Goeden of Yankton, SD, Diane (Dennis) Shepherd of Oacoma, SD, and Raymond (Barbara) of Yankton, SD; two sisters; Odelia Goeden Ellis and Delores Goeden Novak both of Yankton, SD; 10 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Merton W. "Mert" Gorseth, age 63, of Lancaster, NY and formerly of Yankton, SD died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Millard Suburban Hospital, Williamsville, NY due to complications after surgery. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 15, 2008, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mert was born September 6, 1944 to Melvin and Ida (Schlaefli) Gorseth in Yankton, SD. He attended schools in rural Irene and high school in Irene, SD. He attended College in Springfield, SD earning a four-year teaching degree. He was united in marriage to Donna Hasker on January 29, 1966 in Yankton, SD. They lived in Yankton, SD until 1998. They also lived in Shenandoah, IA; Coloma, MI; and Scottsbluff, NE. Mert worked in the nursery business his entire career. His family will always cherish his memory. Among other hobbies he loved the outdoors and hunting. He was a member of the Quarterback Club and Elks while living in Yankton. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and American Nursery Association and St. Gabriel's Catholic Church of Elma, NY.
Grateful to have shared Mert's life are his wife Donna of Lancaster, NY; son Mike and wife Kimberly of Pittsburg, PA and daughter Kris and husband Brad of Yankton, SD. His five grandchildren were an important part of his life - Jace, Reid, and Ty Binde and Tanner and Hannah Gorseth. Two brothers Don Gorseth of Lacey, WA and David (Ardis) Gorseth of Lennox, SD; sister Winifred (Bill) McKay of San Antonio, TX and five nieces and two nephews.

Roland A. Kirschenman, age 79, of Menno, SD passed away Wednesday December 5, 2007 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Peace Christian Reformed Church with Rev: Harold Willemstyn officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152. Visitations will be from 4-9 PM, Friday, December 7, 2007 at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home in Menno, SD with the family present at 7 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Larry Kirschenman, Glen Kirschenman, Rano Kirschenman, Dale Kirschenman, Terry Kirschenman, and Daryl Kirschenman.
Roland Albert was born on December 4, 1928 to Albert and Sophia (Stoebner) Kirschenman near Menno, SD. On March 3, 1929, Rev. John Bodenman baptized him. He attended Menno Public Schools. Roland received Confirmation Instruction from Rev. Eric Kaempchen and on June 20, 1943, he was confirmed at Salem Reformed Church in Menno. He was drafted into the United States Army and served from August 22, 1951 to August 4, 1953. After serving his country, Roland returned back to the Menno area where he farmed until 1983. He had health problems most of his life and entered the Menno-Olivet Care Center in August 18, 1999.
His memory will be cherished by his brother, Willard (Loretta) Kirschenman of Menno, SD; sister-in-law, Helen Kirschenman of Lakewood, CO; four nephews: Terry Kirschenman of Huxley, IA, Daryl Kirschenman of Wyoming, MN, Clyde Kirschenman of Lakewood, CO, and Gregory Kirschenman of Littleton, CO; three nieces: Gloria Funk of Lino Lakes, MN, Connie Emmert of Ketchikan, AK, and Debra Reynolds of Lakewood, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophia who died on May 11, 1971, Albert who died on August 18, 1974, and his brother, Elton who died on September 14, 2005.
Roger B. Klimisch, age 89 of Utica died on Friday, December 28, 2007 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 2, 2007 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. Burial with military rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 of Yankton will be at approximately 1:30 PM at the St. Agnes (Sigel) Cemetery in rural Utica, SD. Visitations will be from 5-9 PM, Tuesday, January 1, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory in Yankton, SD with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Jason Klimisch, Aaron Klimisch, Eric Young, Jesse Ewing, Jared Young, Nicholas McDonnell, Andy McDonnell, and Mike Merritt. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Roger Benedict was born March 10, 1918 to Anton and Martha (Block) Klimisch in Utica, SD. From March 22, 1941 until October 15, 1945, he served in WWII in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant specializing as a radio operator. He performed duties with the 159th Infantry stationed on Attu Island, Alaska. Roger operated, maintained, and repaired a transmitting and receiving tactical field radio unit. He transmitted and received International Morse Code at over 20 words per minute. Roger returned home to farm along the James River until he retired. On October 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Delores Cwach at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church (Sigel), the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 in Yankton, and surveyed land for the ASC Office. He enjoyed the outdoors and developed a love for trapping and fishing as a boy. He played fast pitch softball with the State Lake area men's team and helped coach the Sigel youth softball team.
Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Delores Klimisch of Utica, SD; his sons: John (Jenny) Klimisch of Albuquerque, NM, James Klimisch and Steve Klimisch, both of Utica, SD, Greg Klimisch of Wichita, KS, and Tom (Tammy) of Omaha, NE; his daughters: Joan (Jeff) Young of Kennewick, WA, Mary Jo (Steven) Ewing of Antioch, CA, and Kathy (Roy) McDonnell of Albuquerque, NM; sisters: Sister Jane Klimisch and Sister Jeanette Klimisch, both of Yankton, SD, 16 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Those who preceded Roger in death are his parents, sisters: Evelyn Frick, Susan Kingsley, Josephine Huber, and brothers: Isadore and Martin Klimisch.
Kelly Robert Krempges, age 41, of Yankton, SD, passed away Monday, April 14, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday, April 21, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton with the Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitation will be Sunday, April 20th from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a rosary at 3 pm followed by a scripture service at 3:30 pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be John Krempges, Josh Krempges, Casey Krempges, Jeb Davis, Kyle Krempges, Kory Krempges, Keith Krempges.
Kelly was born on April 25, 1966 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Edward and Phillis (Arionus) Krempges. He grew up in Dell Rapids where he attended special education classes until he graduated in 1987. He made many friends in the community. From the age of eight, Kelly participated in Special Olympics. He was selected to represent South Dakota in 1987 when the International Special Olympics were held at Notre Dame, IN. He won a fourth place ribbon in bowling there. Other events he participated in through the years include softball, basketball, cross country skiing, and track and field. He was athletic booster of the year in Dell Rapids in 1987. After graduating, Kelly and his parents moved to Yankton, SD so he could attend YAATC. He worked there doing various jobs for 21 years. Kelly was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church where he did volunteer work. He was a member of ARC. Kelly collected pop tabs for the VFW. The proceeds from the pop tabs help support the Make A Wish Foundation. Kelly was assistant coach for various youth athletics teams in Yankton. Kelly attended ERTH religious classes for many years. He worked delivering the local MV Shopper for a few years.
Kelly made friends wherever he went. He lived in a group home in Yankton for four years and recently was a resident of Avera Sister James Care Center where he loved attending Mass and playing bingo. He spent time every day writing.
Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Edward and Phillis Krempges of Yankton, SD; his sisters: Jean Ann (Doug) Feuerhelm of Jefferson, IN, Kathy (Danny) Davis of Trent, SD, and Kristie Theesfeld of Sioux Falls, SD; his brothers: Daniel (Moe) of Curlew, WA, Craig of Dell Rapids, SD, Bernie (Julie) of Ihlen, MN, and Denis of Sioux Falls, SD; foster sister, Angie Melti and many nieces and nephews and all those whose hearts he touched.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John, brother-in-law, Joe Theesfeld, and sisters-in-law, Sherry Daily and Penny Krempges.
