Ferne D. Grewe, age 83 of Omaha, NE and formerly of Yankton, SD passed away on Monday, November 20, 2006 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Visitations will be from 6-9 PM, Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service. Pallbearers will be Tom Winckler, Karl Winckler Jr., Nathan Winckler, Brian McFarland, David McFarland, and Larry Pick.
Ferne D. was born July 21, 1923 to Carl H. and Winifred "Winnie" A. (Wharton) McFarland at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. She attended grade school at the McFarland School and was a graduate from Volin High School. She furthered her education by attending Southern Normal Teacher's College in Springfield. During World War II, she was employed at the United States Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She returned to Yankton and on June 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Alois Grewe at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. While residing in Yankton, she was employed by Montgomery Wards, Sears, and Dale Electronics. They moved to Omaha in 2002 and resided in the New Cassel Retirement Center, where she made numerous friends.
She was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and past President of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. Family genealogy was a great interest for her but most of all she had a deep love of family.
Those who will cherish her memory are her son, James (Mary) Grewe of Omaha, NE; her daughter, Marsha Grewe of Omaha, NE; two granddaughters, Heather and Hannah Grewe of Omaha, NE; a brother Orrin (Marion) McFarland of Northford, CT and a sister, Carolyn W. Winckler of Tyndall, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother, LaVern.

Max H. Hein, age 74, of Menno, passed away Friday, July 28, 2006 at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, SD with Rev. Brad Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152. Visitations will be 4 to 9 PM, Monday at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, with the family present at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers are Heath Thomsen, Zachary Thomsen, Garry Wollenzein, Del Mutchelknaus, Deono Miller and Owen Zanter.
Max H. Hein was born October 25, 1931 in rural Freeman, South Dakota to Herman and Portia (Rademacher) Hein. He attended high school in Menno. Max married Vernet Cox on February 26, 1956 in Olivet, South Dakota. He farmed near Freeman until 2001 when he retired and moved to Menno. Max was an active member of Unity Lutheran Church until its closure. He was currently an active member at Grace Luthern Church in Menno. He was a member and past member of numerous church and community organizations.
Max is survived by his wife, Vernet of Menno, South Dakota; daughters, Skye (Dale) Thomsen of Brandon, South Dakota, Kim (Tim) Flint of Viborg, South Dakota; 4 grandchildren, Heath Thomsen, Zach Thomsen, Jamie Flint, Dakota Flint; mother-in-law, Annabel Cox of Menno, South Dakota; brother, John (Bea) Hein of Ipswich, South Dakota; sisters, Delphine (Leo) Laber of Freeman, South Dakota, Norma Dannenbring of DeSmet, South Dakota, Rita (Milton) Handel of Olivet, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Latitia (Wes) Jordan of Mountlake Terrace, Washington.
Preceding Max in death are his parents, Herman and Portia Hein; a granddaughter; his father-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law.
Rosalie "Sissy" S. Hansen, 69, of Yankton, went home to join her family Saturday, August 12, 2006, at her residence in Yankton. It was always mom's wishes to be cremated and not be fussed over, but a memorial service will be held in her honor at Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, Thursday August 17, 2006, at 7:00 pm. Family members will be present at 6:00 pm. Please bring your memories of mom to remember and share with us.
Rosalie was born on September 9, 1936 at Scotland, SD to Herman and Mae (Cisar) Hollman. She grew up in Scotland, SD. She graduated from Scotland High School in 1954 and received her teaching degrees from Southern State Teachers College in 1955 and 1958. She taught elementary school at Clear Lake School in Bon Homme County. She married Sydney Hansen on May 29, 1957 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They spent the first few years of their marriage in California, moving back to Yankton permanently in 1965. She worked many years as a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Syd's Salvage. They also ran the Westside Raceway racetrack from 1969-70. She also worked as a homemaker, raising 5 kids, as well as baby-sitting for many nephews, nieces and neighborhood kids through grade school.
Rosalie enjoyed many things. She and her sister, Darlene, were always doing things together such as taking night classes in painting, calligraphy and cooking, and taking family trips to California, Yellowstone, and the Black Hills. She also enjoyed many crafts such as artex and oil painting, crocheting, knitting, sewing and quilting. Countless people in the community have been touched by her generosity with gifts of doilies, scarves, table runners, baby booties and baby blankets. Rosalie worked at the cafe in Scotland all through high school and consequently was an excellent cook. She is well known for her specialties of angel food cake, banana cream pie and peanut butter malts and did not hesitate to make them every year for many aunts, uncles, friends and family get-togethers. She was a member of the Yankton Womens' Bowling Association, initially bowling on the Friday Night Owl league, eventually bowling on 3 leagues, becoming the secretary for Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning leagues, and traveling to many state bowling tournaments. She enjoyed visiting with everyone and gathering afterwards at Fryn' Pan. Rosalie also loved listening to Elvis music, watching her Wheel of Fortune nightly as well as numerous movies and television shows, and playing her video poker games.
Rosalie is survived by her husband, Sydney; their children Laurie Hansen-Neisen of Spearfish, SD, Steven Hansen, Holly Hansen-Muller, Deena Hansen, all of Yankton, and Janel Hansen of Sioux City, IA; 3 grand-children, Matthew Neisen, Whitney Neisen and Nick Neisen all of Spearfish, SD; sisters Clarita Varilek of Yankton and Hope (Darrell) Price of Ansley, NE and many wonderful nieces, nephews, friends, and all her extended family that called her "mom".
Rosalie was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, her brother-in-law Merle Frank, brother Robert Hollman, nephew Charles Schmidt, and sisters Shirley Schmidt, Darlene Winckler, and Betty Frank.
Ignatius B. "Igs" Goeden, age 85, of Yankton passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2006, at Avera Wakonda Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Wakonda, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Monday, August 21, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with Military Graveside Rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by scripture service at 7:30 PM. Pallbearers will be his nephews Jerry Ryan, Kent Goeden, Steve Ellis, Tony Ellis, Dan Novak, and Bernard Goeden. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Igs was born August 22, 1920 on the family farm near Menominee, NE to Michael and Anna (Wubben) Goeden the 3rd of six children. He was baptized, received his first communion, and was confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, NE. He attended school through the eighth grade at St. Boniface School, Menominee, NE. After leaving school he worked as a farm laborer for various neighbors. He was drafted into the US Army in November of 1942. He served in the European Theater for 11 months, receiving 3 Bronze Stars and Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He drove Transport Truck for Couch Transport, did blacksmithing for Christensen Brothers (his father-in-law) Chris Christensen. Worked for Bannister and Kadous (Underground Construction) and Frank Branaugh Construction for many years. In August of 1968 Igs opened the Goeden Blacksmith Shop in East Yankton. He ran the business until his retirement.
Ignatius was a paid up life member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 and the 9th Armored 27th Battalion Association and attended many of their reunions. Igs enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, card playing, horseshoes, feeding and watching the birds, squirrels in his back yard. He did a remarkable job remodeling his 2 homes to accommodate his growing family. He married Laura Christensen on October 19, 1942 in Vermillion, SD and renewed those vows on June 6, 1943 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Junction City, KS. To this union 8 children were born: Cynthia (David) Vollmer of Springfield, SD, Lee (Anna) Goeden of Utica, SD, Larry (Cathy) Goeden of Canton, SD, Bernadette (David) Hacecky, Mission Hill, SD, Lorelei Hodges of Yankton, SD, David Goeden of Yankton, SD, Michelle (Kenneth) Olszewski of Lansing, IL, and Michael (Lanaya) Goeden of Plymouth, MN. 25 Grandchildren; 29 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Ignatius is survived by his wife Laura, 7 of his 8 children, 23 of his grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. One brother Joseph of Yankton, SD, and 2 sisters Odelia Ellis and Delores Novak both of Yankton, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Larry, one brother Lawrence Goeden, one sister Mildred Ryan, and 2 grandsons Aaron Johnson and Bret Hacecky.
Bernice Blakney, age 74 of Santee, NE passed away on Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Center of Bloomfield, NE. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Monday, August 21, 2006 at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center in Santee, NE with Rev. David Hussey officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitations will begin at 4:00 PM, Saturday, August 19, 2006 and continue until the time of the service on Monday with a 7:00 PM prayer service each evening. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD, is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Robert L. Bickerstaff, Jr., Ryan L. Bickerstaff, Rodney L. Bickerstaff, Sr., Donald F. Bernice was born June 29, 1932 at Santee, NE to Ruben R. and Adelia (Mitchell) Shunk. She grew up in Santee, NE attending school through the eighth grade. She married William Blakney, Jr. on May 16, 1970 in Little Rock, AR and after living in several cities moved back to Santee, NE in the early 1980's. She will be best remembered for her quilting talents. Bernice was a member of the Santee Episcopal Church of Santee, NE.
Bernice's memory is cherished by one brother Robert L. Bickerstaff, Sr. of Santee, NE; two sons, Kalon Strickland, Sr. of Santee, NE and Martin D. Harless of Cherokee, IA; Grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters Verna Lee Wall and Martha Pike; 3 brothers Larry Eugene Trudell, Wylie W. (Pete) Bickerstaff, and John L. Bickerstaff.
KeAndre Zephier, 3 month old son of Barry and Mary (Crossman) Zephier of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Friday, July 28, 2006. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Friday, August 4, 2006 at Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery, rural Crofton, NE. Visitations will be Friday, August 4, 2006 at 11:30 AM until the time of service at Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton. Pallbearers are Derrick Zephier, Nadien Zephier, Austin Zephier, Gregory Crossman, Michael Crossman, Wendy Crossman, Joshua Gratzfeld, and Leah Gratzfeld.
KeAndre was born March 31, 2006 to Barry and Mary (Crossman) Zephier in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Those who will cherish his memory are her parents, Barry and Mary of Sioux Falls; one sister, Kayla Zephier at home in Sioux Falls; maternal grandparents Joe and Joyce Gratzfeld of Yankton, SD; Gregg Crossman of Summerfield, FL; maternal great grandparents, Arnold and Jeanette Tramp of Parkston, SD, Walter and Ann Crossman of Palm Coast, FL; maternal step great grandparents, Joe and Sylvia Gratzfeld of Yankton; and paternal grandmother, Faith Zephier of Yankton, and great great grandmother, Grace Counoyer of Wagner, SD.
She was preceded in death by his sister, Ashley Zephier.
LaVerne Elizabeth (Sudbeck) Goeden, age 78 of Yankton passed away on Sunday, August 06, 2006 at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 10, 2006 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Menominee, NE with Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating and Rev. Mike Keating concelebrating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface parish cemetery. Visitations will be from 3:00-5:30 PM, Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Menominee with a 7:30 PM scripture service followed by an 8:00 PM rosary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Patrick Bonertz, Nicholas Goeden, Jeremy Goeden, Craig Lammers, Myles Lammers, Wes Wortmann, Travis Becker, and Curtis Becker. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and godchildren.
LaVerne was born to Victor and Johanna (Feilmeier) Sudbeck on June 5, 1928 in Bow Valley, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley, NE. She attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School through the 8th grade. She worked as a housekeeper before her marriage. On April 19, 1949, she was united in marriage to Edward B. Goeden in Bow Valley, NE and 13 children were born to this union. She worked for the West Catholic School lunch, Stuelpnagel Egg Processing Plant, and for the last 20 years until the time of her death, she was employed by Avera Sacred Heart Hospital.
Those who will cherish her memory are her sons: Daniel (Mary) Goeden of Vermillion, SD, Timothy (Jane) Goeden of Yankton, SD, Dennis (MeLinda) Goeden, Wakonda, SD; her daughters: Sharon (Charles) Bonertz of Hillsdale, IL, Janice (Terrence) Lammers of Hartington, NE, Mary (Timothy) Becker of St. Helena, NE, Charlene (Edward) Arens of Fordyce, NE, Teresa (Dean) Lammers of Hartington, NE, Donna (Gary) Peterson of Logan, IA, Joan (Gerard) Wortmann of Hartington, NE, Judy Goeden of Yankton, SD, and Christi Goeden (Fiance Rick Bye) of Mission Hill, SD; her brothers: Marvin (Rita) Sudbeck of Hartington, NE and Orville Sudbeck of Hartington, NE; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Sudbeck of Hartington, NE; 44 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and many nieces nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Johanna (Feilmeier) Sudbeck, her husband, Edward B. Goeden, son, Francis Goeden, granddaughter, Jennifer Peterson, brother, Joseph Sudbeck, and sister-in-law, Charlotte (Shirley) Sudbeck.
Wilma C. Hornstra, age 89, of Yankton passed away early Thursday, August 16, 2007 at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, August 20, 2007 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, with Rev. Joseph Schulte officiating. Burial will be in the Pioneer Cemetery, rural Springfield, SD, at approximately 1:30 PM, Monday afternoon. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with the family present and memorial tribute at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one-hour prior the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Hornstra, Robert Hornstra, Kenneth Foley, Fred Hornstra, Don Cook, Roger Bartscher, and Duane Chladek.
Wilma (Chladek) Hornstra was born November 2, 1917 in Lesterville to William and Mary (Verner) Chladek. She attended school in Lesterville graduating in 1935. She then attended Southern Normal College in Springfield receiving a teaching certificate.
Wilma started teaching in a rural school near Springfield and still corresponded with two of her students. On March 5, 1938 she married Ray Hornstra at the United Church of Christ Church. In 1941, they went to Amarillo, Texas for a visit and ended up living and working there for two years. In 1943, they left again to California were they worked in defense plants. In 1945, they returned to Texas. Wilma taught Senior High School there for two years while Ray went back to his previous job. In 1948, they returned to Lesterville and then started foster parenting. They took care of various ages of children and Wilma taught school near Lesterville. In 1948, they adopted a baby boy, Herbert Raymond whom is named after a nephew that had just died. In 1951, they moved to Crofton, Nebraska and Ray drove to Yankton. Wilma was the church pianist and taught there for two years. They then built a new home and Wilma started her teaching career in Crofton that lasted fifteen years. Herb joined the Navy after his graduation and then moved to Yankton in 1971. Wilma also moved to Yankton in 1969 and taught until her retirement in 1993. She remained very active in the community continuing to help out at school when needed. She was also a volunteer tutor at Sacred Heart School, teaching ERTH, working in the hospital gift shop and craft committee until 2004. She was employed at the reception desk at the hospital, and also taught at Mount Marty for two years in the Government Special Education program. She had been a volunteer in the church office since 1928.
Wilma received many well-deserved awards including the Mother Gertrude award and the Sertoma Service to Mankind award, both in 1995. In 1999, she received Volunteer of the Year Award and Volunteer of the Year Award from the association of Volunteer Leaders.
She was active in Home Extensions for nine years and was president of one group of Home Makers for eight years.
Wilma's memory is cherished by her son Herb (Jane) Hornstra of Yankton, SD; one sister Louise Raker of Madison, WI; one sister-in-law Leola Hornstra of Springfield, SD; granddaughter Jamie Eldred and great grandchildren Christopher, Grace, and Caleb all of Yankton, SD; and special friends Larry and Kathy Bartscher of Norfolk, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Ray in 1985, one brother Joe, and two infant sisters preceded her in death.
James L. "Jim" Cihak, age 65, of Yankton, died August 16, 2007 at his residence of cancer. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 9 PM Monday evening at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a scripture service at 7:30 PM followed by a memorial tribute program and memory sharing. Honor guard will be the Hillcrest Invitational Pro-Am Green and Blue Jacket Sponsors.
On August 16, Jim Cihak passed away peacefully in his Yankton home, surrounded by his family. Jim was a lifelong resident of Yankton, an avid golfer, and will be remembered by all for his generous spirit and lively sense of humor. He is survived by beloved wife Judy (Yankton); brothers Bob (and Mary Lynn of Brier, WA), Tom (and friend Rogene Thaden of Yankton), and Rich (and Ann of Chaska, MN); sister Kathy (of Lake Geneva, WI); daughter Carrie (and George Lovell of Seattle, WA) and son Stephen (and Susan of Scottsdale, AZ). He was a proud grandfather to Stephen's children Spencer (6) and Sarah (3). Jim embraced Judy's children and grandchildren Scott, Jake, Katie, and Mackenzie (12) and Olivia (7).
Jim was proud to be a fourth generation South Dakotan, born and raised in Yankton. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Irene (Binder) Cihak-Johnson and father Robert. His grandparents were Tom and Sylvia (Hamberger) Binder of Tabor and Joseph and Anne (Schauffsen) Cihak of Geddes.
Jim's passion throughout his life was golf. He was a graduate of Iowa State University majoring in turf management and in his senior year was captain of the golf team. He was a member of the Professional Golfers' Association and worked as a golf professional at the Bellefontaine Country Club in Ohio in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, he played on the PGA Tour. After his return to Yankton in 1973, he was actively involved in supporting golf in South Dakota. He was a member and past president of the South Dakota Golf Association. In that capacity, he toured the State to rate golf courses and was a tireless supporter and past director of the South Dakota Junior Golf Association Foundation. He was an active member of the Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton, serving on their Board of Directors. Jim helped initiate the Hillcrest Invitational Pro-Am tournament in 1974 and was involved in the tournament every year since then as a player and member of the organizing committee.
In 1973, after a few years away for college and work as a golf pro, Jim returned to Yankton and was a proud resident and avid supporter of his city for the remainder of his life. On returning to Yankton, Jim joined his father Bob and brother Tom at Cihak Insurance. After father Bob's passing in 1978, Tom and Jim continued the business, assisting families throughout southeastern and southcentral South Dakota. Over the course of his 34-year career in the insurance industry, Jim received numerable company and industry awards and honors.
Jim enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Highlights of his journeys include annual trips to Las Vegas with his lifelong friends, trips on an Alaskan cruise and to the British Virgin Islands with his children, and an African safari with one of his golf partners. Jim designated as his honorary pall bearers his travel and golf partners Jay Hubner, Tom Lillibridge, Frank Messner, Dave O'Brien, Ted Gibbens and lifelong friend Jim Abbott.
Jim passed away after a long battle with cancer. In his last months and even days, Jim retained his sense of humor and attended to every detail to ensure he had taken care of his family and friends. Jim requested that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember him make contributions to South Dakota Junior Golf Association Foundation (2116 S. Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57105) or Avera Sacred Heart Hospice (501 Summit, Yankton, SD 57078).
