A. Henrietta Harvey, 100
A. Henrietta Harvey, of Vivian, died Saturday, Jan 31, 2009, at St. Mary’s TCU. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Presho Methodist Church. Burial will be at Vivian Cemetery.
Anna Henrietta McCormick was born March 4, 1908, to Robert and Mary McCormick. She graduated from Vivian High School at age 16 and from Augustana at age 18, after which she taught at various schools in Lyman County.
She married Millard Harvey in 1929 and they lived and farmed south of Vivian until they moved into town in 1970. To this union three children were born: Audrey (Red) Hullinger, Eunice (Jack) Hullinger and Larry (Sheilah) Harvey.
Henrietta enjoyed crocheting as a hobby and was an avid card player, playing bridge until age 98.
She attended all sporting events that her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids participated in. She loved to watch the Atlanta Braves on TV.
In March of 2008, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a multitude of her family present.
She is survived by her daughters, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, two sons-in-law and one great-grandson, Jackson Hullinger.
Lillian Larson, 89
Lillian Larson, 89, of Highmore, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at the Highmore Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at the United Methodist Church, in Highmore, with the Rev. Jenene Earl and Max Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.
Lillian Rose was born May 20, 1919, to John James and Luella Mae (Smith) Hirsch at home with Grandma Smith helping deliver her. She grew up in northern Hyde County and at the age of 16 married Elmer Larson. They raised two sons, Richard and Neil, on a farm north of Highmore before building their home in Highmore.
She worked at the sale barn café and Red Owl grocery store. She later started a baby-sitting service, caring for many children who affectionately called her “Grandma.”
Lillian had gifts for serving and hospitality. Her coffee pot was always on and barbecues were made up in the freezer just in case the grandkids would stop by.
Though she had hardships and much sadness in her life, she was a gracious and caring person. She was the heart of the family and the type of person you liked the first time you met.
She was loved by all who knew her.
As a resident of the Highmore Healthcare Center, she enjoyed all the activities and was the corn husking champion of 2007, still using her farming background skills. In December 2007, she became the center’s snow queen, participating in the annual festivities at the auditorium. It was a night she cherished as she watched the 2007 snow queen (a great-great-niece) relinquished her title to the 2008 snow queen, who was a great-niece.
Left to cherish her memory are her six grandchildren: Galin (Sara) Larson of Huron, Darin (Jane) Larson of Sioux Falls, Kevin (Heather) Larson of Rapid City, Terry (Kathleen) Larson of Yucaipa, Calif., Kenny (Aprylle) Larson of Beaumont, Calif., and Robby (Ruby) Larson of Yucaipa, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Velma Walker, of Highmore, and Jackie Figaniak, of Philadelphia, Pa.; daughter-in-laws: Mary Larson, of Yucaipa, Calif., and Sharon Smith, of Harrold; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Luella; husband, Elmer; two sons: Richard and Neil; her stepfather, Luman Peterson; one brother, George; and three sisters: Helen, Shirley and Doris.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Lillian’s arrangements.
Roger Erickson, 66
Roger “Mick” Erickson, 66, Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Gussie Erickson, Sturgis; his children, Lora, Erickson, Sioux Falls, Michael Erickson, Pierre, Diane Solaas and Daniel Solaas, both of Sturgis; two brothers, Jim Erickson, Rapid City, and Lynn Erickson, Pierre; and two granddaughters.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
Robert Victor, 85
Robert (Bob) Victor, 85, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Mitchell and Pierre, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 30, at First Lutheran Church, in Mitchell, with burial to follow at Serviceman’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.
Robert Duane Victor was born Aug. 31, 1923, at Mitchell, to Emil and Emma (Sebbe) Victor. He graduated from Mitchell High School and attended the University of Minnesota until enlisting in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. Upon discharge from the service he completed his degree in engineering at South Dakota State University.
Robert married Elda L. Victor, May 21, 1950, in Oldham. They made their first home in Mitchell for 11 years where Robert worked for his father’s trucking company (Haley’s) and later for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Robert was transferred to the Finals Division of the SDDOT in Pierre, where they resided until 2003, when they moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to their children. Robert was an active member of Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, where he could flip lefse better than anyone. He enjoyed tinkering and there was nothing he could not fix. You could not walk past him without him saying hello. He always had a smile on his face and loved to share a laugh.
Grateful for having shared his life was his wife, Elda; his children, Rich (Mary) Victor, of Black Hawk, Cheryl (Tom) Gaeckle, of Sioux Falls, Dave (Angie) Victor, of Mitchell; and his grandchildren, Josh and Vanessa Victor; Nate, Luke, Molly and Sam Gaeckle; and Brett Victor.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brother, Art Victor.
Dora Walters, 89
Dora I. (Hall) Voorhes Walters, 89, of Pierre, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at St. Mary’s TCU.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 31, at Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg with a luncheon at the Gettysburg Senior Center. Inurnment will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mesa, Ariz., at a later date.

Dora I. Hall was born Jan. 18, 1920, to Leon Ernest and Susan J. (Barr) Hall in Potter County, the middle of nine children. She graduated from Presentation College in 1943 as a registered nurse. Dora worked as a supervisor at St. Luke’s Hospital, the Miller Hospital in St. Paul and the Cheyenne Agency Hospital. She also worked for many years and was well known in the Potter County area as the nurse at the Gettysburg Clinic and Gettysburg Hospital.
Dora was united in marriage in 1943 to Boyd (Buster) Voorhes. A son, Rick, was born to this union in 1947. Dora married Robert (Bob) Walters in 1970 and they made their home in DeSmet. She continued her nursing career working as the director of nurses in the DeSmet Nursing Home and the DeSmet Hospital.
In 1976, Dora retired and she and Bob moved to Kansas City, where they lived until Bob retired in 1981, when they moved to Mesa, Ariz. After Bob’s death in 1998, she returned to South Dakota to be near her son’s family in Pierre.
While living in Mesa, Dora was very proud to have served as a Stephen minister for the Episcopal Church. She also loved to crochet and do counter cross stitch and made many baby blankets, booties and sweaters for her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Dora is survived by her son, Rick (Denise) Voorhes, of Pierre; step-sons: Greg, Don and Mark Walters; her grandson, Mark Voorhes, of Laramie, Wyo.; her granddaughter, Anne Voorhes, of St. Paul, Minn.; and her sister, Catherine Wahle, of Custer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Buster and Bob, five brothers: Floyd, Orie, George, Alvin and Dick; and two sisters: Lavone Fox and Emma Rettig.
Memorials may be directed to Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg.

Agnes L. Masur, 91
Agnes L. Masur, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Platte Health Center in Platte. Services are being held today, Feb. 2, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Geddes with burial in the St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery.
Agnes was born on April 18, 1917, in Platte, to Jacob and Margaret (Travis) Steffens. She attended country school, Platte High School, and graduated from Geddes High School in 1936. She was an operator for the Northwestern Bell Telephone for many years.
On May 3, 1939, she married Ignatius Masur in Geddes. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
She became a resident of the Platte Nursing Home on Sept. 11, 2008.
Agnes is survived by 10 children: Beverly (Lyle) Walker of Eureka, Calif.; Eileen (David) Walker of Carmichael, Calif.; Carmen (Dennis) DeGraff of Buena Vista, Va.; David (Cleo) of Clearlake, Calif.; Thomas (Marcene) of Geddes; Colleen “Rete” (Richard) Slaba of Geddes; Tony of Coer d’Alene, Idaho; Cindy (Kenneth) Jaeger of Harrold; Kathy (Joe) Togethoff of Platte; and Mark (Jeanne) of David City, Neb. She is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Mushitz of Rapid City, and Gertrude Steffens of Geddes; and sister-in-law Marcene Steffens of Humansville, Mo.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant son, Dennis, three granddaughters, three brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

Harold Bolyard, 84
Harold Bolyard, 84, of Pierre, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at St. Mary’s TCU. Memorial services were Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Pierre. Inurnment will be in his home state of West Virginia at a later date.

Harold was born on Jan. 6, 1924, in Mogantown, W.Va., a son of the late Roy B. Bolyard and Lenna F. Bolyard.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe in World War II and the U.S. Air Force as a B29 co-pilot in the Korean War. He retired in 1979 from the Pierre Regional Airport as air traffic controller with a combined military and government service of 30 years. He then owned and managed apartment complexes. He lived in Pierre since 1956 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and owned and flew his own airplane. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church and a member and volunteer with the American Legion, Masonic and VFW.
He is survived by a brother, Jerry Bolyard and spouse, Joan, of Sparks, Md. and sister, Patty Decker and spouse, Bill, of Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Dale Bolyard, and a sister, Edma E. Gibson, and brother-in-law, John C. Gibson.

Cecelia Hinckley, 85
Cecelia Matilda (Moran) Hinckley, 85, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Maryhouse Chapel, in Pierre. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in Blunt.
Cecelia was born to Emma and James Moran, Feb. 12, 1923, and grew up in the Geddes/Delmont/Armour area of South Dakota. In February 1944, she married Dwight Everett Hinckley and the couple farmed around Armour.
In 1955, the family moved to Blunt, where Cecelia continued to raise her own family as well as many other children in the community. Many adults will recall learning their alphabet and how to color from Grandma Hinckley at her daycare.
Cecelia loved to cook and spent many years working at the Chuckwagon Café. Gardening was one of Cecelia’s enjoyments and she was always willing to share the produce she grew; many a pie was baked from the apple tree in her back yard.
Her children remember her as someone who was always there when they needed her; a kind, caring person who put her family before all else.
Grateful for sharing her life were her eight children: Sandra Hinckley, James (Lauralea) Hinckley, of Blunt; Andrea (Neal) Spaid, of Blunt; Patricia (Butch) Dowling, of Belle Fourche; Pamela (Laurna) Davis, of Cookson, Okla.; Mark (JoAnne) Hinckley, of Marshall, Minn.; Tamera Garrity, Sioux Falls; and Michael Hinckley; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Cecelia was preceded in death by her husband, two children (Sandra and Michael), and one great-grandchild (DaShawn).
