Virginia Ferris

Funeral Services for Virginia Ferris, 62, Billings, Mont. formerly of Lead, were held Saturday 2, at the Valley Health Car Home Chapel, Billings, where she was a resident for several years.

Virginia died Aug. 14, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

She was born Aug. 16 1936, in Lead to Ore and Esther Cooper.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Patty (Ed) Eliason, Florence, Colo.; sons; Mike Ferris, San Diego, Tim (Debbie)Ferris, Bridger, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gary (Dea) Cooper, Whitewood: one sister, Mary (Harry) Daniels, Deadwood; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established for the Valley Health Care Home, Billings, Mont.

Elwood Johnson

Memorial services for Elwood (Ervin) Johnson 86, Sturgis, were held Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Burial with military honors was at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Elwood died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Elwood was born Aug. 8, 1914, at Eveleth, Minn.., to John and Hattie (Peterson) Johnson. He moved with his family to the Black Hills at the age of five. He attended schools in Lead.
Elwood served in the Army as an auto mechanic from 1944-46 in the motor pool and two campaigns in the European Theater.

He enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, carpentry and loved the game of golf.

He is survived by his wife, Nickie. Sturgis; sister Hazel (Ernie) Roger, Burno, Idaho; daughter, Marilyn and son-in-law Dale Thein Denver; brother-in-law Blas Skicalo and his wife Lois, Lead; Sisters-in-law Rosie and Helen in California; several nieces and nephews.
Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Harold, Elard, Melvin, Floyd, and Jake; and a son Lawrence.

Arrangments were entrusted to the Chaput Memorial Chapel, Lead.

A memorial has been established is his memory.

John F. Lamb

Funeral services for John F. Lamb, 87, Spearfish were held Monday, Sept. 4 at Our Saviors Lutherans Church in Spearfish with Rev. Kent Stillson officiating. Burial followed at the Rose hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

John died Thursday, Aug. 31, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
John Francis Lamb was born May 9, 1913 in Merton Township, Clark county, to John and Jennie (Trevithick) Lamb. John attended Merton Township schools. He farmed with his dad. John married Dorraine Shirley Steen on May 13,1944 and they made their home on the family farm. To this union seven children were born, Madeline, Darwin, Allen, Robert, Roger, Rodney, and Donald. In October of 1955, the family moved west of Spearfish where John farmed and worked at Homestake Sawmill for 21 years. They retired and moved into Spearfish.

John was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Clark, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorraine Shirley Lamb, Spearfish and six sons and their wives, Darwin and Cathy Lamb, Elgin, S.C.; Allen and Barb Lamb, Nisland; Robert and Linda Lamb, Nisland; Roger and Sheila Lamb, Dripping Springs, Texas; Rodney and Sandy Lamb, BelleFourche; and Donald and Peggy Lamb, Spearfish; 19 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildrn and two sisters-in-law, Vera Lamb and Rose Lamb.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Alice; two brothers, Harold and Lyle; one daughter, Madeline and one granddaughter, Kimberly Lamb.

The Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home of Spearfish were entrusted with the arrangements.

Harold 'Dick' Remington Sr.

Funeral services for Harold "Dick" Remington Sr., 67, Whitewood, who died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000 at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish, were held Monday, Sept. 4, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Pastor Dale Bartscher officiating. Family Inurnment services will take place at a later date.

Dick was born May 4, 1933, at Sturgis to Harold and Aileen (Palmer) Remington. He spent his younger years growing up on the family ranch east of Sturgis.

As the years went on, he pursued different occupations. He spent many years as a salesman for Black Hills Oldsmobile. He owned and operated his own trucks and for the past three years , he hauled grave as an independent contractor. He died Tuesday evening in his truck outside of Whitewood on his way home.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, and in past years, was president of the South Dakota Independent Truckers Association.

He married Joan McElhaney on Jan. 15, 1956 in Edgemont and from this marriage five children were born.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Remington, and his children, Dusty and Scott, all of Black Hawk, Dick and Jodie Remington and their children, Charity, Sarah, and Cynthia, all of Piedmont, and Todd and Michelle Remington and their children, Tasha and Steven, all of Rapid City; Two daughters, Judy and Albert Duprel and their children, Rayan, Daniel, and David, all of Sturgis, and Julie and Mike Peterson and their children, Beth and Jared, all of Piedmont; one brother Darrow Remington and his wife, Shirley, Sturgis; and three sisters, Donna Widner and her husband Sonny, Sharon Halls and her husband , Gordon, of Rapid City.

His parents and one grandson, Phillip Swallow, preceded him in death.

Ethel A. Baker

Ethel A. Baker, 94, of Spearfish died September 8, 2000, at Lookout Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at The United Methodist Church with Pastor Kip Roosen officiating burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Ethel was born January 27.1906 to Arthur and Sarah (Stew) Nicholas on their family ranch near Crow Peak. She attended school in Spearfish graduating from The Normal School, She then attended and graduated from St. John's School of Nursing in Rapid City. Ethel worked as a nurse in the Spearfish area for many years. She married Clarence Baker in 1935 at Spearfish, two sons; Edwin and Dean were born to this union. Ethel continued nursing and helping others. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. The Black Hills Workshop, Crow Peak Extension Club, South Dakota Nursing Association, and Senior Citizens Center. Ethel was awarded a certificate of 70 years of active participation in the South Dakota Association for Family and Communication Education.

Ethel enjoyed gardening, flowers, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends playing cards, especially bridge. She was very supportive of her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence in 1974, one brother Chanley Nicholas, two sisters; Sarah Tetrault and Beatrice Kommes.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her two sons; Edwin Baker of Spokane, Wash. and Dean Baker of Rapid City; one brother, Arthur and his; wife Arlene Nicholas of Spearfish. one brother-in-law, Walter Tetrault and one sister-in-law Clara Nicholas, both of Spearfish and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials can be directed to Black Hills Workshop and Northern Hills Training Center.

Fidler Funeral Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

John K Haefs

Funeral Services for John K. Haefs, 35, of Sundance and formerly of Lead, were Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead, with Pastor Steve Agan officiating, Burial was in the Roubaix Cemetery

John died on Saturday, August 9, 2000 at Sundance. John was born December 5, 1964 at Spearfish, to Donald A. and Nancy E. (Redenbaugh) Haefs. He attended grade school and middle school in Deadwood and Lead High School. At the time of his death he was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the eagles.

Survivors include his mother, Nancy Redinger of Sundance; his father, Donald Haefs of Lead; two brothers, Frank Haefs of Rapid City, and Jim Haefs of Deadwood;and special friend Christine Patrick; a sister, Donna Beck of Lead; Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews, and a Great Nephew.

John was preceded in death by his Grandparents and an Uncle. Arrangements were under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. A memorial has been established in his memory.

Thomas Franklin Myers

Thomas Franklin Myers, 75, Sturgis, passed away peacefully September 10, at the Fort Meade Veterans Nursing Home.

Funeral services were Wednesday. September 13, with Pastor Ed Dead officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard followed.

Tomas was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Highmore to Robert and May Belle (Blasdell)
Myers. He grew up in Highmore and the surrounding area until 1942 when he joined the Navy and spent four years fighting for his country in WWII on the Pacific Ocean. He was honorably discharged In 1946. On April 29, 1949, he married Dorothy Mae Bixby in Montana. Tom followed in his father's, footsteps and became one of the best bakers throughout South Dakota. He also worked as a concrete finisher. He and Dorothy spent most of their lives in South Dakota.

Tom loved to fish, hunt, and spend time with his family. He also loved cribbage, especially if he could skunk his opponent. He is best remembered by his fishing trips, and other family outings.

Survivors include his mother, May Myers, Rapid City, five sons, Ron Myers, Spearfish,Terry Myers, Brookings, Paul Myers. Sturgis. Bobby Myers. Cozad, Neb. and Scott Myers, Belle Fourche; two daughters, Bonnie Thybo and Vicke Lore Rapid City; two sisters Charollette Wise, Rapid City, two sisters Charlotte Wise Rapid City and Judy Myers, Sturgis; four brothers Donnie Myers of Florida, Wayne Myers, Rapid City, Morrus Myers of Montana and Jim Myers of Penn.; nine grand children; and Ten great grandchildren .His father, his wife, his brother, Dick, a grandson Todd, a sister, Peggy, and one great-grandson, preceded him in death.

Ralph Poppleton

Ralph Poppleton, 79, formerly of Lead, died Tuesday. September 5, 2000 at his home in Custer.

Ralph was born October 15, 1920. in Lovelock, Nev. to Charles and Grace (McFadden) Poppleton. He grew up in Lead and graduated from Lead High School, Class of 1939. He enlisted in the US Army and served in WWII and the Pacific Theater. He returned to Lead and worked for the Homestake Mine for several years. In the late 60's he moved to Custer to help his brother on the family ranch. He later purchased the ranch.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Newcastle.

Ralph enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved his family dearly and was loved by them and will be missed.

He is survived by his sister Eleanor Inich, Spearfish, 3 nieces and 6 nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Fay Steger, Lead. Lola Williams, San Diego, and his brothers Allen Poppleton. Spearfish, and Wayne Poppleton, Custer.

Military Graveside Services were held, Monday September 11, at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, under the direction of Isburg-McColley's Chapel, Custer.

era A. Condon

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday for Vera A. Condon, 88, Whitewood, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Gary Oreshoski officiating. Burial followed at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Vera died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at the Belle Fourche Long Term Care Unit.

Vera was born February 29, 1912 at Baker, Mont. to Wallace John and Augusta (Ohlrich) Pratt. She grew up in Montana and graduated from Plevna, Mont. high school. She moved to the state of Washington where she worked at various jobs including at a cannery.

She met Howard Condon and they were married on December 6, 1943 at Bakerfield, Calif. The couple lived in Bakerfield while he was in the military. They moved to Yakima, Wash. in 1947 and later to Hamill. They lived in Moser for a short time where Mr. Condon was employed on a ranch. They moved to Castlerock, where Howard worked fro Mickey Fox. They moved to Sturgis where Vera was employed at the Sturgis Nursing Home for 10 years. She moved to Whitewood after the flood and retired from the nursing home in 1977.

Vera was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and was active in the Whitewood Senior Citizens Center for many years.

Vera stayed busy as an avid crafter. She enjoyed crafting many items including stick horses and soft sculptured faces.

Survivors include one son John Condon and his wife Marie, Millboro; one daughter Nelda Brown, Whitewood; one daughter-in-law Rose Rush, Winner; three brothers; Harry Pratt, Baker, Mont., Kenneth Pratt, Sun City Ariz., Harold Pratt, Dickinson ND., one sister Emogene Harrison, Gillette, Wyo. five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in dearth by her husband Howard, one son Denzil Rush; one son-in-law Virgil Brown; three brothers, Wayne, Bill and Orie; and two sisters Nellie and Molly.

A memorial has been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Melvin E. Drake

Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin E. Drake, 76, of Lead, will be 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. The Revs. William Zandri, Ron Garry, and Arni Kari will officiate. Christian Wake and Rosary Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at St. Patricks Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Burial with Military Honors will be 10:00 A.M. on Monday, Dec. 11, 2000 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Melvin died on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000 at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center.

Melvin was born Sept. 17, 1924 at Sturgis, SD to Albert C. & Alene (Jacobson) Drake. He graduated from Vale High School in 1942. Melvin went into the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. After returning he attended University of South Dakota and graduated in 1951. Melvin was married on May 23, 1956 in Deadwood to Juliana E. Zastrow. He worked for a time at Eddies Tires and Glass in Deadwood, and then he began teaching. Melvin was a cub master for 8 years and president of the Deadwood Swim Club. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.

Survivors include his wife, Julie of Lead; a son, Bruce Drake of Rapid City; four daughters, Karen Everett of Lead, Charleene Davis of Belle Fourche, Linda Batman of Rapid City, and Lynell Erickson of Pierre, seventeen Grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Williamson of Sturgis, and Norma Charon of Sturgis.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents. .

A memorial has been established.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Hazel M. Repass

Hazel M. Repass, 96, Denver, CO and formerly of Spearfish, died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at the Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Denver, Colo..

Hazel May Orvold was born on May 22, 1904 at Trail, Minn. to John A. and Thurine (Olson) Orvold. She grew up on the family farm at Trail. She attended school at Concrodia Academy in Minnesota and recieved her two year teaching certificate in 1924 from Bemidji State Teachers College at Bemidji, Minn. She taught elementary school at Glenwood, Minn for four years, and served two as Principal. Montevideo, Minn for three years and in Spearfish, for three years. She was married to Rex Repass on June 20, 1934 at Spearfish. Her teaching was put on hold because at that time married women weren't allowed to teach. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Black Hills Teachers College in 1957 and she taught school in Spearfish for five years. Mr. Repass died in 1973 and Hazel continued to make Spearfish her home until moving to Denver, Colo. in May 2000.

She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish and taught Sunday School and was a member of the Choir. She was a 50 year member of Chapter N, PEO. Kappa Delta Gamma, Annie Talent Club, Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary and the Spearfish Senior Citizens..

Hazel enjoyed Baking, Reading, Playing bridge, Knitting and thoroughly enjoyed life with a hearty laugh and smile.

Those grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Catherine Thorson and her husband John of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mary Erickson and her husband Mike of Denver, Colo. two grandchildren, James Thorson and his wife Cathy of Littleton, Colo. and Carol Scarbro and her husband Tom of Altoona, Pa., three great grandchildren, Andrew and Eric Thorson of Littleton, Colo. and Drew Scarbro of Altoona, Pa.. nieces, Marjorie Evans, Wooster, Ohio, Ruth Vahl, Dubuque, Iowa, Rosemary Cole, Canby, Orer. and Judy Hooper, Seattle, Wash, nephews, Dwight Ambach, Susan, Va. Gordon Ambach, Washington, DC.

Memorial services will be held later this month in Spearfish.

The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is entrusted with arrangements.

Gladys A. Nelson

Gladys A. Nelson, 85, Gillette, Wyo., formerly of Spearfish, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the United Church of Christ, Spearfish, with Rev. Mel Miller, officiating. Inurnment will be at 1:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis. In keeping Mrs. Nelsons' wishes, her body was cremated and there will be no visitation.

Mrs. Nelson was born January 25, 1916, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Hudson and Sara (Ball) Aldrich. While very young, the family moved to a farm north of Draper, . The Aldrich children attended the North Star County School from first through eighth grades. She graduated from Pierre High School in 1934.

Gladys received her two-year teaching certificate from Dakota Wesleyan in 1937. Her first teaching experience was Piedmont, where she taught the primary grades for five years. She taught two years in Sturgis, then worked in an office in San Francisco during WWII.

When the war was over, she married Robert Nelson November 24, 1945 in Vale, Ore.. They lived in Casper, Wyo., Grand Junction, Colo., and Great Falls, Mont., where Robert worked for Western Airlines. They came back to their beloved Black Hills where her husband was employed by the Homestake Gold Mine.

Three children were born at that time, Sandra, Bruce, and Sara. After the children were all in school, she took classes at Black Hills State University and received her bachelor's degree in 1967. She taught first grade in Lead for fifteen years and loved every minute of it. When she and Bob retired, they moved to Spearfish in 1978. Bob died in 1995 and she moved to Gillette in 1999 to be near Sara and Bruce.

Survivors are two daughters Sandra Nelson, Evanston, Wyo. and Sara Delahoyde, Gillette, one son Bruce Nelson, Gillette, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, one sister Gertrude Evans, Pierre and one brother Richard Nelson, Vale, Ore.

Mrs. Nelson is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and four brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting all donations be directed to the United Church of Christ in Spearfish or the Campbell County Senior Citizens.

Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, has been entrusted with arrangements.
