Vergene Dubs
Vergene Irene (Stern) Dubs, 65, of Freeman, died unexpectedly of apparent heart failure on April 5, 2002. She was born May 9, 1936 on the family farm near Freeman to William and Ida (Juhnke) Stern. She was baptized as an infant by Rev. Janzig and confirmed in the Christian faith by Rev. Ide on May 28, 1950, at Unity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Freeman High school.
On Aug. 28, 1955, Vergene was united in marriage to Eldor L. Dubs at Unity Lutheran Church by Rev. Schedler. Following her marriage, she became a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Freeman.
Vergene was employed at the Freeman Bakery until the birth of her children. Following the enrollment of her children in school, she returned to work at AMPI until her retirement in July, 1992.
Happy to have shared her life with her are her husband, Eldor; her children: Sheila and husband David Peterson, Yankton, Darwin and wife, Lyla, Sioux Falls, and Brenda and husband, Christian Paulsel, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren: Megan and Jennifer Peterson, Yankton, Eric, Laura and Amy Dubs, and Rebecca and Rachel Paulsel, Sioux Falls; two brothers: Melvin and Dorthy Stern, Sioux Falls and Arden and Arlene Stern, Brookings; one sister-in-law, Leota and Harley Schultz, Parkston; also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sanroe and James; two nephews, Timothy and Charles Stern; and two nieces Linda and Bonnie Stern.
The funeral was held Tuesday, April 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman with Rev. John Farden officiating and Betty Haar as organist. Special music was provided by Dan Herrboldt, Gary Pfeiffer, Roger Aman and Robert Albrecht accompanied by Jane Kleinsasser. Pallbearers were Eric Dubs, Curt Stern, Ron Krier, Greg Stern, Stuart Schrag anad Douglas Dubs. Interment was at Freeman City Cemetery.

Floyd Waldner, 68, of Wakaw, Saskatchewan, died March 14, 2002 at Wakaw Hospital. The funeral was held Monday, March 18 at 10 a.m. at the One Arrow First Nation Community Hall, Wakaw. Interment was at One Arrow Cemetery.
Floyd was born Nov. 27, 1933, to John J. and Barbara (Waldner) Waldner at Langham, Saskatchewan.
Surviving is his wife, Eileen; his children: Sandra (Joe) Thomas, Don Waldner, Yvonne (James) Johnson and David (Karen) Waldner.
Floyd was predeceased by his parents, John, in 1938 and Barbara in 1992; his grandparents: Joseph J. and Marie (Tschetter) Waldner, and Paul D. and Susanna (Wurtz) Waldner, all of Langham; and his stepfather, Archie Rusk.

Edwin B. Tschetter

Edwin B. Tschetter, 86, of 40594 193rd St, Carpenter, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at the Huron Nursing Home. The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church, with Rev. Matt Stacey and Rev. Nathan Janzen, officiating. Pallbearers were Kent Waldner, Roland Walter, Gary Gilbert, Goeffrey Gross, Roy Anderson, and Nathan Anderson. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Edwin B. Tschetter was born Aug. 30, 1917, on a farm in Spink County near Hitchcock to Iky and Rebecca (Hofer) Tschetter. As a small boy, he moved with his parents and sisters to a farm near Lake Byron. He attended school in Lake Byron Township.
As a young man he worked with the WPA as a blade driver on road crews. On Nov. 2, 1940, he married Alice Walter at the home of her parents in Milford Township. They farmed with Edwin's dad until 1946 at which time they took over the family farm. They shared 56 years of married life. He farmed until 1996 when he suffered a stroke and was unable to work.
Edwin accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1949 and was baptized at Hutterthal Mennonite Church of Carpenter where he remained a member. He served on the church board as trustee for many years and for 19 years was the congregation's representative with the Mennonite Mutual Aid Insurance.
Edwin served on the Beadle County ASC committee, Lake Byron School Board, Lake Byron Township Board where he was also an assessor, and was active with the United Family Farmers where he served as treasurer.
Edwin was cared for at home by his daughter, Barbara, for six years after his stroke and then entered the Huron Nursing Home in March of 2002. His heart remained on the farm and he looked forward to rides in his van to see how the crops were coming along. His pride and joy were his granddaughters.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; his daughter, Barbara; his granddaughter, Liza; and his sister, Rose Brandenburg.
Left to cherish wonderful memories are his son and daughter-in-law, Orrin and Jane, Carpenter; two granddaughters, Jill and Merrit Mendel, of Doland, and Megan and Nathan Janzen, of Mountain Lake, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Blake and Seth Mendel, and Summer Janzen; his sister, Edna Gross, Huron; and many extended family members.

Arpa Tschetter
The funeral for Arpa Ruth Tschetter, 90, of Fairmont, Minn., was held Friday, April 26, at 9:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont and at 4 p.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Marion. Burial was at the Tieszen Cemetery in Marion.
Arpa died Friday evening, April 12, 2002 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Truman, Minn.
Arpa Ruth (Tieszen) Tschetter was born on Jan. 4, 1912 in McCook County, the daughter of Heinrich and Aganetha (Ewert) Tieszen. She grew up on the family farm near Marion. She graduated from Marion High School in 1930 and from Sioux Falls College in 1934. She married Jacob H. Tschetter of Bridgewater on Aug. 27, 1934 in Marion. They lived in Chester, Belgrade, Minn., and Mt. Lake, Minn., before moving to Fairmont in 1951. During the years from 1934 to 1958, she combined homemaking, raising their three sons and playing the organ and piano in local churches. Both Arpa and her husband together enjoyed music, she would play piano while he would sing. She had played the pump organ as a teenager and would accompany church services. In the 1950s, she returned to college and then taught English in the Truman High School from 1958 to 1972. Jacob died in 1978. Arpa entered the Lutheran Retirement Home in Truman in July of 2001.
Arpa enjoyed many activities in the communities in which they lived, including memberships in the Federated Women's Study Club in Cottonwood Co., Tuesday Travel Study Club in Martin Co., Mother's Club in Fairmont, and the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Teachers. She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world, including Europe and Asia, where she enjoyed a stay with her son, LeRoy and family when he was living in Hong Kong.
She is survived by three sons: LeRoy Tschetter of Chattanooga, Tenn., Charles Tschetter and wife, Mary Jo, Mayfield, Ohio, and John Tschetter, Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren: Karen Muolo and husband, Sal, Jim Tschetter and wife, Beth, and son, Dylan, JoAnna Tschetter, Tim Tschetter, Jill White and husband, Jason, Phil Tschetter and wife, Suzanne; two sisters: Johanna Hofer, Marion, and Luelle Penner and husband, Randy, Freeman; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; daughter-in-law, April Tschetter; and grandson, James Tschetter.

ESTHER UNRUH

Esther Unruh, 92, died at the Freeman Nursing Home in Freeman on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003.
Esther was born on Oct. 7, 1910 on a farm home in Menno to Christian and Kathryn Handel. She attended country school in rural Menno. She then worked as a telephone operator in Menno and spent a year working in California.
She married Milton Unruh on Jan. 1, 1946, and lived south of Freeman for six years before moving in to Freeman. Esther was a busy homemaker raising three children and tending a large garden acreage. After the children were grown, Esther worked at the Freeman Community Hospital for 15 years.
She was a member of the Salem Mennonite Church, an avid quilter and loved to visit.
She is survived by three children: Lu Ann and husband Daniel Duncan, Kansas City, Kan., Carrie Appino, Brookings, and Daniel Unruh, Duluth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Art Handel, Scotland; sisters-in-law: Eleanor Handel, Olivet, and Martha Handel, Menno.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; two brothers: Rueben and Erwin Handel; and a sister, Elsie.
The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Salem Mennonite Church with Rev. S. Roy Kaufman officiating. Organist was Harriet Kaufman with special music by Lyle Preheim, Kerwin Graber, Leroy Epp and Roy Kaufman. Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Elizabeth Appino, Jonathan Appino, Robert Appino, Jessica Unruh, Katie Duncan, Dan Duncan and Bill Duncan.
Interment was at the Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
