Grace Mae Hammerquist
Grace Mae Lobdell Hammerquist, 98, passed away
November 19, 2004 at her Westhills Village South residence in Rapid City.
Grace was born
July 13, 1906 in White Lake, South Dakota to Jay Clyde Lobdell and Augusta Marie (Gardner) Lobdell. Grace attended Spearfish Normal School in the teacher’s program and taught in many one room school houses including the Dawkin’s School. She went on to graduate from Black Hills Teacher’s College in 1929. She taught at Caputa and Farmingdale Schools for several years. In 1958, she took continuing education classes at the University of Arizona. She also taught first grade at Douglas Elementary School for fifteen years before retiring in 1971.
Grace was always one step ahead of her peers. In 1926, she flew with Clyde Ice, the first pilot in the Black Hills. Before she married
Charles Leslie Hammerquist in 1931, she filed on her own homestead. She moved to the Hammerquist Ranch near Caputa and raised turkeys, gardens and eight children and boasted about how well behaved those turkeys were. Grace was often told that she had a green thumb because of her beautiful roses and other plants, but she said they were due to a lot of hard work. She lived through the Great Depression and always appreciated a good bargain. The community rallied behind the family when the Hammerquist home burned down in 1953, displacing the family of eleven.
Charles Hammerquist died
in 1960, leaving Grace with four minor children and a ranch. She moved into Rapid City in 1963 when her son Jerry officially took over the ranch. After retiring from teaching she took many trips overseas, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Yugoslavia, and Central America. She particularly liked speaking Spanish and became fluent in that language while spending a summer with an exchange program in Guadalajara, Mexico. She was a long time member of AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma and AARP.
In 1987 Grace moved to Westhills Village where her sister Lois Jones was already residing. The two were very proud of the fact that they had made their own decision to move into the residence. Grace was an avid reader and kept up on current events. She loved a good Scrabble game and enjoyed listening to music, especially the Three Tenors. Grace valued education and frequently wrote to famous broadcasters and politicians correcting their grammar – sometimes, getting a reply. She contributed many historical photographs depicting life in the early days of Pennington County to the Rapid City Journal.
Grace is survived by her eight children: Kathleen & Allen Holst of Tucson, Arizona: Carroll (Kayo) Hammerquist of Rapid City: Laura Mae & Joe DiSanto of Calgary, Alberta: Janet & Robert MacKrell of Klamath Falls, Oregon: Jerry & Janice Hammerquist of Caputa: Charles (Buz) & Loretta Hammerquist of Rapid City: Allen (Bobo) & Billie Hammerquist of Caputa and Karen & Lance Eddy of Anaheim, California. She also leaves behind twenty grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. She is preceded in death
by an infant son, her parents, Jay and Augusta Lobdell, husband Charles Hammerquist, brother Wray Lobdell and sister Lois Jones.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Caputa Community Center.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Haggar of South Maple United Methodist Church as officiant. Burial
