Connie Meyer

August 5, 1936 - November 11, 2011

Constance Meyer was born August 5, 1936 at Sioux Falls, the daughter of Sidney and Evelyn (Pruner) Harding. She was raised in Sioux Falls and attended Washington High School. Connie married Donald Meyer on November 20, 1953 at Luverne, Minnesota. They lived in Sioux Falls where they raised their family. They moved to Brandon in 1973 where on July 25, 2010 they proclaimed a "Don and Connie Meyer Day" because of their service to the community.

Connie operated a cake and craft business out of her home for over 40 years and also was a Watkins distributor. Connie's cakes were the centerpiece for many occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and holidays. She also loved cooking for the holidays for family and friends. Everyone was welcome at her table. She had an artistic love for ceramics and made hundreds of Old World Santas and Nativity sets including one that has been on display at her church, Emanuel Baptist, for over 20 years.
She was employed with RGIS for 10 years and worked in the bakeries at HyVee, Randalls and Albertsons for a numerous years. Connie also volunteered at McKennan Hospital for three years.

Grateful for having shared in her life are four children and their spouses, Therressa and Steven Hurley, Sioux Falls, Ronald and Mary Meyer, Austin, MN, Robert and Joan Meyer of Garretson, Jolene and Thomas Kujawa of Brandon; seven grandchildren, Andrea, Donald, Ashley, Andrew, Shauna, Christopher, Nathan; six great-grandchildren, Isaac, Anna, Miles, Ella, Emmy and Marcus; three siblings, Donna Faller, Sioux Falls, James "Jim" Harding, Seattle, WA, Henry "Hank" Harding, Florissant, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don, in 2010; a daughter, Evelyn; and a sister, Mary Jo Lutness.

Fidelia Mellenberndt

July 22, 1918 - February 28, 2012

Fidelia “Fud” Christine Brigham Mellenberndt was born July 22, 1918 to Richard Brigham and Marie (Besser) Brigham at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She lived most of her life in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington High School in 1936.

She married Elmer Mellenberndt on September 4, 1937 at Flandreau, South Dakota. Elmer and Fud owned and operated Frank Transfer and Storage, Inc. until their retirement in 1977. They spent winters in Texas and Arizona and summers in the Black Hills, especially enjoying the family reunions.

She was the “family rock”, a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed. She was devoted to her family and had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren.

She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, dancing and cooking for family.

Grateful for sharing her life are five children, Jackie Berg-Anderson, Rapid City, SD, Sharon (David) Barnett , Phoenix, AZ, Bill (Maxine) Mellenberndt, Sioux Falls, SD, Janice (Kevin) Paulson, Lennox, SD and Vicki (Glen) Heibult, Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Vivian, brothers, Harry, James, Richard Brigham and Jack Besser.

Della Perkins

November 21, 1907 - March 6, 2012

Della was born November 21,1907 at Axtell, Kansas to Carl and Matilda (Carlson) Swanson. She grew up on the farm in Kansas and attended country school. She moved with her family to South Dakota.
Della married Charles Perkins on August 16, 1924. They owned the Shady Lane General Store near The Buffalo Trading Post. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1939. She later worked at Fantles and Sioux Falls Towel and Linen.
Della was very family oriented and helped her family with their businesses. She enjoyed playing solitaire, tending her flower garden and trips in the car.
Grateful for sharing her life are her daughters, Tressie Sittig, Sioux Falls, Evelyn Tiesen, Tuscon, Arizona, Dolly (Dale) Stockel, Tuscon, Arizona and Betty Anderson, Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
Della was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles in 1987, four sons, Harold, Jesse, Glen and infant son, Elmer; also two grandchildren and three sisters and four brothers.

Irene Lund

September 22, 1929 - March 7, 2012

Irene Alice (Selken) Lund, 82, passed away on March 7, 2012 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD after more than four years of battling cancer.

Irene was born on September 22, 1929 to Chas. Henry Sr. and Goldia Adelia (Wilka) Selken at the farmhouse where they lived near Larchwood, Iowa. She was the 6th child of 8 born into that union. Brothers and sisters included Melvina, Veramae, Chuck, Viola, Louise, Melvin and Doris, with more to come later. When Irene was 5, her mother, Goldia, passed away and the young children were sent to live with different family members. They maintained close connections with their father and siblings at all times, as best they could without internet, cars, and phones. Irene and Louise lived with their Uncle Bill and Aunt Petra Selken near Watertown, SD until their father, Chas, remarried. Chas married Fern (Matthew) Green on April 30, 1937 and all the children returned to live with the family near Argonne, SD, except Doris who was adopted but always their sister. Fern’s three children, Elsie, Charles and Leroy Green joined the family. Four more of Irene’s brothers and sisters were born to Fern and Chas. H, Selken Sr., Raymond, Lucille, June and Ronald for a total of 15 children.
Irene completed high school in Argonne, SD and moved with her sister, Louise, to Sioux Falls, SD in 1947. She was married to George Morris Lund on July 2, 1949 and they lived in an apartment in Hills, Minnesota. Upon moving to Sioux Falls in 1953, Irene worked at the Nickel Plate Café. Later, she worked at Raven Industries, Ramada Inn and then Sioux Valley Hospital laundry department until her retirement in 2001. Irene was an avid bowler and attended many national bowling tournaments with her team-mates over the years. She also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins play baseball, playing with her grandchildren, playing pinochle with friends and family, sailboat rides on the Missouri River, frequent and large family gatherings and telling the stories about growing up with 14 siblings.
Irene is survived by three sons, Clifford, Sioux Falls, Terry (Linda), Crosby, TX and Randy (Shirley), Sioux Falls; 7 grandchildren, Erin (Adam), Eric (Tena), Emilee (Will), Scott (Meghan), Keith (Audra), Jenae, Evan (Julie); 7 great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Anthony, Lila, Cora, Kayden, Sydney and Lane and numerous nieces and nephews; 8 siblings, Louise Lund, Sioux Falls, Elsie (Green) Collins, Rosamond, CA, Melvin (Arla), Dell Rapids, Raymond (Margrit), Mannheim, Germany, Lucille (Gene)Tooley, Sioux Falls, June (Richard) Smith, Poplar Grove, IL, and Ronald (Susan), Sioux Falls and Leroy (Armena, Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Goldia and Chas.H, and Fern; her husband, George in 1985, and siblings, Melvina, Veramae, Chuck, Viola, Doris and Charles.

Fred Schumacher

April 26, 1959 - March 27, 2012

Fred “Fast Freddie” was born April 26, 1959 at Sioux Falls, SD to Leland and Janet Schumacher. He was raised in Sioux Falls where he attended Laura B. Anderson Elementary School, Whittier Middle School and Lincoln High School. He enlisted with the US Army in 1975. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1979.
Fred worked in Topeka, Kansas for Scan Optics for a few years and then came back to Sioux Falls where graduated from a vocation and technical training program. He then worked at Egge’s Automatic Transmission for many years and was self-employed at Schumacher Communications
Fred enjoyed working on cars, riding motorcycles and spending time with his loved ones. Fred passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Fred is survived by his wife, Toma and children, Stevie, Nathan (Jeanne) Schumacher of Elkhart, KS, Jessica Schumacher of Texas, Tansy Flannery, Katie Grahm, Stevie Schumacher and Olivia Jacobson, all of Sioux Falls; siblings, Roger (Nancy) Schumacher and Todd Schumacher of Sioux Falls, Ammie Bently of Grantsburg, WI, Christie (Keno) Sauby of Baltimore, MD, Gloria (John) Esculano of Dunedin, FL and Susan (Troy) Payne of Sioux Fall; 9 grandchildren and a host of extended family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leland Schumacher and Janet Dubblede, and a brother, Steven Schumacher.

Janice O'Connell

April 15, 1941 - April 23, 2012

Janice Elaine Robb was born April 15, 1941 to Ernest and Sarah (Repp) Robb at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She grew up and attended school in Sioux Falls graduating from Washington High in 1959.
Janice married Darrell O’Connell on March 12, 1960 at Sioux Falls. They lived at Beresford until 1967 and then lived one year at Pipestone, Minnesota. In 1969 they moved back to Sioux Falls. Janice worked at Tri-State Warehouse and later Modern Press and Label. Janice and Darrell moved to Spencer, Iowa in 1993. Darrell passed away on December, 27, 2006 at Hartley, Iowa. Janice moved back to Sioux Falls in 2008.
Janice played softball on a team with her sister for several years and was part of a bowling league as well. She enjoyed playing solitaire and later in life became a football fan.
Grateful for sharing her life are her children, David O’Connell, Sioux Falls and Jill Ontjes (Terry Horton), Canton, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Justin Ontjes and Jerrad Horton; and her twin sister, Junice Herschberger, Sioux Falls.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Darrell and five siblings, Gene, Dick, Wayne, Glenn and Fay.

Jeanne Marie Nelson

Jeanne Marie Nelson went home to the Lord on May 6, 2012.

Jeanne was born in Wilmot, SD May 22, 1934 to Henry Cramer and Alberta Slick-Cramer. Alberta passed away in childbirth and Jeanne was raised by her maternal grandparents Anna and Jay Slick. She grew up in Wilmot and graduated high school there.

Jeanne married Howard L Nelson Sr December 1st, 1961 in Brownsville, TX after she was widowed by her previous husband. Together they raised 7 children. She was a resident of Good Samaritan Center for 8 years.

Jeanne dedicated her life to raising her children and taking care of numerous foster children. She actively sold Avon for over 25 years. Jeanne loved to listen to music and was a self –taught piano player.

Grateful for sharing in her life are her children: Eugene (Sylvia) Dorsett of Sioux Falls, SD, James Dorsett of Houston, TX., Darva (Gary) Rye of Gillette, WY., Marcia Driscoll of Worthington, MN., Howie (Cheryl) Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD and Maria (Wayne) Graves of Rapid City, SD Extended family Dan (Mary) Akkerman and their daughters of Sioux Falls, SD 13 grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.Jeanne was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, grandparents, parents, son David, and Brother Donnie Cramer.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Sanford Pulmonary Staff but especially Heather and Rachael for their kindness and care while Jeanne was in hospice. Our appreciation is extended to all who share in her memories.

Minnie Houg

August 4, 1921 - May 8, 2012

Minnie Houg, 90, passed away on May 8, 2012 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage. Minnie was born on August 4, 1921 in Sioux Falls, SD. Minnie married Charles “Chuck” Houg on February 5, 1948. Minnie was employed at John Morrell & Co., Raven Industries and EconoFoods in Sioux Falls.

Minnie enjoyed many activities in life, including puzzles and knitting items for her family. Minnie raised 5 children, and enjoyed being a homemaker for them and Chuck. Holidays were the most exciting time of the year for Minnie, having family over to her house for some of her home cooked meals, which often included lefsa. Minnie was a Lady of the Moose Lodge in Sioux Falls, and never missed an opportunity to share a dance with her favorite partner, most often, her husband Chuck.
Minnie is survived by four children: Gwen Houg of Sioux Falls, SD; Lynn Houg (Rita) of Columbia, MO; Tamie Jewell (Lee) of Tucson, AZ; Craig Houg (Melanie) of Sioux Falls SD; a son-in-law, Dick Gustaf of Renner, SD; 9 Grandchildren: Jason Houg, Jacob Houg, Randi Houg, Michael Gustaf, Kristin Dahl, Sherry Wynn, Eric Jewell, Melissa Anderson and Steve Houg; 15 Great-Grandchildren: Brandt, Colman, Parker, Britton, Harmony, Chloe, Thomas, Hunter, Justice, Noah, Jordan, Callum, Carter, Mason and Tatum; Three Siblings: Fern Getting of Sioux Falls, Erma Linton of Sioux Falls and Betty Mettler of Sioux Falls.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles Houg, a daughter Dody Gustaf, one sister and two brothers.

The Women of the Moose will have ceremonial presentation in Minnie’s honor at 6pm, Sunday, at the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Women of the Moose.

Sandra McConniel

August 5, 1943 - May 15, 2012

Sandra Charlene Loughlin was born August 5, 1943 in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Lawrence and Lillian (Plagman) Loughlin. She married Jim McConniel.

She is survived by five children, Lisa, Suni, Deb, Bill and Leonard; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; and a grandson, Jeremy Johnson.

Marjorie Anderson

February 15, 1932 - May 28, 2012

Marjorie was born on February 15, 1932 to Oscar and Jennie (Bolhouse) Clausen in Castlewood, South Dakota. She grew up on a farm near Castlewood and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1950. She then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls. Marge married Seth Anderson on March 10, 1967 at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. She worked in the office at Gage Brothers for 41 years.

Marge enjoyed playing softball and also bowled in league for many years and was proud of her 297 game. She was a sports fan and liked watching the Minnesota Twins, along with a variety of other ball games, particularly if they were close games. For many years, Seth and Marge enjoyed camping with friends over the summer months, often at Lake Vermillion and Newton Hills. Once retired, they began wintering in Mesa, Arizona.

Marjorie was 80 years old when she passed away on May 28, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Seth; sister, Judy (Donald) Eide, Sioux Falls and numerous nieces and nephews. Marge was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.

Dona Underberg

March 5, 1940 - June 1, 2012

Dona Jeanne Underberg (Siegfried) was born March 5, 1940 in Gregory, SD. As children, Dona and her three sisters spent time in the Abbot House orphanage in Mitchell, SD. Lynda (Ammann), the youngest of the four was the first to be adopted by Ralph and Helen Ginn of Brookings, SD. Dona and Dorothy (Martinez) were then adopted by Everette and Lelah Siegfried of Sioux Falls, SD. Two years later, Elly (Weeg) was also adopted by the Siegfried family and reunited with her two sisters.

Dona loved to bake for her children and grandchildren most! But she also baked for family and friends. She was famous for her banana bread and cookies! Throughout her life she worked in many private homes as a house care taker and was a childcare provider for many years. Dona was known to be free spirited with a very loving heart. She was also someone you could talk to and she would do anything she could to help out others. She was very well known for her big kind heart.

Dona married David Volden in 1957. They were blessed with six beautiful children. Tonya Sue Clark (Kent) Worthing, SD, Peggy Jeanne Volden (Rich Almont) Sioux Falls, SD, Allyn Paul Volden (Jane) Pueblo, CO, Lori Ann Volden (deceased), Amy Marie Leu (Mike) Inwood, IA, and James David Volden (Sonia) Sioux Falls, SD.

Dona devoted her life to raising her children. She felt more than blessed for she loved her children very much. She also had an everlasting love for her twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren: Alyssia Weinzetl, Adam Olson, Amanda Gilbertson (Tonya), Ryan Hillberg, Jared Nolz (Peggy), Erica Call, Shana Roberts, Scott Volden (Allyn), Annie Schleis, Autumn Leu (Amy), Kami Dee Volden, Luke Volden (James); great grandchildren: Mason Olson (Adam), Cole Knoblock, Cade Knoblock, Alexis Schleis (Annie), Maddison Paige Roberts, Kegan Roberts (Shana).

Donald Underberg has been Dona's very special companion for many years. Don has always been there for Dona when she needed him the most. She had great special love for him.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents Everette and Lelah Siegfried and daughter Lori Ann Volden.

Janice Schuldies

October 1, 1943 - July 6, 2012

Janice “Spring” was born October 1, 1943 at Eagle Butte, South Dakota, the daughter of Cyril Benoist and Evelyn Whitney. She graduated from high school and attended college.

Spring was known for her innate artistic ability through the medium of wood carving. She created works of art symbolizing life experiences, heritage, and Sioux Culture. She was known to her children and friends for her deep meaningful hugs and sunshine-like smile. Spring loved life and always gave it all for what she believed.

Janice (Spring) Benoist died Friday evening on July 6, 2012 after her battle with cancer. Today, she won the greatest race; the race for heaven and now knows The Grace of God. She will be missed, but always remembered.

Dorothy Loebig

Born: June 21, 1934
Death: August 10, 2012

Born in Iowa City, IA, she graduated in 1952 from Britt High School, Britt, Iowa where she was the class homecoming queen and band majorette. Married to Al Loebig of Wesley, Iowa, they had 5 children together: Michael (Vicki) Loebig of Texarkana AR, Larry Loebig of Sioux Falls SD, Suzanne (David) Potratz of Sioux Falls SD and David Loebig of Sioux Falls SD. She was also foster mother to Scott Parsons of Seattle WA and Calvin Carriger of Hampton, IA. She was blessed with 9 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Al, and her son, Stephen (Chief) Loebig of Nashville TN. She will be is greatly missed by all that knew her.

Reade Nelson

February 15, 1966 - August 15, 2012

Reade was born on February 16th, 1966 at Sioux Valley Hospital to Gene and Adeline Nelson. He attended Bancroft Elementary, Whittier Junior High, and Washington High School, graduating in 1984. Reade was employed at the Bike Barn, Schoeneman’s Lumber and for the past several years at Justice Fire & Safety.
He married Michelle Hermann on May 18th, 1990 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. They resided their entire married life in Sioux Falls. In fact, we just discovered that not only did they meet at Pizza Inn, but lived in a house behind Pizza Inn for the past 18 years.
Reade liked anything with wheels – except lawn mowers! He enjoyed restoring cars and motorcycles and working in his garage or “man cave” as the rest of us would refer to it. He loved working with computers and hanging out with his numerous friends.
He was always extremely giving and was always willing to help anyone, at any time, in any way. We are all left with memories of his caring ways, constant smile, and infectious laugh.
Reade is survived by his wife, Michelle; two siblings, Scott (Lisa) of Sioux Falls, Dawn (Bill) Crevier of Chancellor; numerous nieces, nephews; and extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Vincent Kraft

March 26, 1943 - September 7, 2012

Vincent Roger Kraft was born March 26th, 1943 to Richard and Evelyn (Sordrager) Kraft in Portland, Oregon.

On June 13th, 1963 he married Patricia Ann Shook. To this union were born three children, Donald Kraft (Deceased), Robert (Angie) Kraft, Sioux Falls, S.D., Pamela (Chad) Boheman, Valley Springs, S.D. His grandchildren, Ivy Kraft, Ashley Hansen, Jacob Lee, Caleb Lee, and Tasha Boheman.

Vince served in the Army from 1960-1966. He worked for the City of Sioux Falls for 30 years. After he retired, he resided in his home in Valley Springs where he spent his time taking care of his acreage. In his free time, he loved to go fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and his friends.

Vince passed away September 7th, 2012 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House. Vince had been on home hospice since October 2011.

Left to mourn his passing are 2 children, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his siblings, Rick (Pat) Kraft, Bruce (Ada) Kraft, Clair (Elva) Kraft, Curt Kraft, Lana Koester and Karen Kraft. His lifelong friend David (Melinda) Muhmel and many other friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kent Kraft and son Donald.

Juanita Cupit

April 29, 1937 - September 9, 2012

Juanita (Jeannie) was born at Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 29, 1937 to Richard and Margaret (Remley) Watson. She had nine brothers and sisters. When she left their home she took five of her siblings with her.
Juanita married Darvin (Curt) Ishmael on May 18, 1959 at Chicago, Illinois. They moved to South Dakota and started having babies. A son in 1960 and four daughters, 1961, 1963, 1964, and 1966. Mostly she was the best mother ever, along with being a housewife. She worked at Quadee in Watertown, did in home childcare and was a home health aide teaching nutrition to families in California. Everyone called her “Ma”.
She loved to fish and passed that on to Tracy and Ann. All of her kids acquired her love of family.
Grateful for sharing her life are her children; son, Tracy Ishmael; daughters, Sabrina (Roger) Persing, Annette (Travis) Anderson, Deanna Willis all of Sioux Falls and Brenda (Dennis Olson) Watson, Hesparia, CA; 28 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; five brothers, Richard (Linda) Watson of Enid, OK, Curtis (Sue) Diel of Enid, OK, Dennis (Debbie) Coryell, Burlington, CO, Bruce (Michaella) Coryell, Oklahoma City, OK and Gregory (Beth) Topping, Macon, GA two sisters, Janet ( Kenneth) O’Neal, Tulsa, OK and Rosemary Diel, Bend, OR.
Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Curt; her parents, and two sisters, Diana and Chloetta.
