July 26, 1940. For the past 25 years, he had been a truck driver for Keen Trucking out of Carlisle, PA.

Elaine Roberts

Elaine Caroline Sanford, daughter of Guy and Amelia (Raywinkle) Sanford, was born
November 14, 1910 at Canistota, SD. She grew up and received her education in that area.
On July 5, 1928, she was united in marriage to Elmer Roberts at Hartford, SD. In 1934 the couple moved to Sioux Falls. Elaine was a homemaker, dedicating her life to her children.
Her husband, Elmer, daughter, Peggy Tully and son, Ronald Roberts preceded her in death.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Rose Rosebrock, Sioux Falls, SD, Joanne Sorenson and her husband Richard, Brandon, SD; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; sister, Doris Faber, Bloomington.
Robert Bassing
Died: Jan 06, 2002
Robert F. Bassing, son of Ethel (Brown) and Alfred E. Bassing, was born
December 20, 1930 in St. Joseph, MO. He moved with his family as a small child to Sioux Falls, SD where he grew up and received his education. Following his graduation from Cathedral High, Robert entered the US Air Force and served during the Korean War.
Following the war, he began working for IBM in Oklahoma as a service repair technician and later transferred to Sioux Falls. Bob retired in the late 1980’s.
He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, American Legion, Post 15, Moose Lodge and the IBM retirement group.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Jean McMunigal and her husband Jack, Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Joseph Bassing and his wife Joan, Sioux Falls, Charles Bassing and his wife Carmen, Elk Mound, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
Richard Harvey
Died: Jan 08, 2002
Dr. Richard Ward Harvey was born
in 1930 in Sioux Falls, SD to Dr. Ward and Marie Harvey. He graduated from Washington High School in 1948, and from the University of Nebraska, College of Dentistry in 1955.
He achieved the rank of Captain in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Worms, Germany in 1956, where he met his wife, Karen K. Walter. They were married
December 28, 1957, and returned to Sioux Falls in 1960. He had been a practicing dentist in this community until retiring in 1997.
He enjoyed fast cars, boats and motorcycles, and electronics. He was fascinated by sci-fi, especially Star Trek.
He was preceded in death
by his parents and is survived by his wife of 44 years, Karin Harvey; and his children Randy and wife Janine Harvey of Sioux Falls, SD, Diane and husband Brett Frederick of Chandler, AZ, and Tod and wife Paula Harvey of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Jackson and husband Bill of Seattle WA.
Ida Lotz
Died: Jan 08, 2002
From her Sioux Falls in home birth on January 6, 1917 to her hospice in home death
on January 8, 2002, Ida Cornell Lotz spent her life as a Child of God, daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. The gifts she experienced and gave were many. From school girl friends that shared her full life journey to the truly treasured friends she gathered along the way, people and relationships were at the center of her life experience.
To all who knew Ida, it was clear that family provided the bedrock of her foundation and her joy. Through more than fifty-six years of marriage, 52 years of parenting and 23 years of grandmothering, she showered her family with endless and unconditional love. This was surely her source of joy and pride. So truly blessed and grateful for having shared Ida’s life are her husband, Stan; her daughter, Suzanne Knudson; her son and his wife Mark and Mary Lotz; and her grandchildren, Kristen Knudson-Peterson and her husband Mitch, and Kate Knudson.
We as Ida’s family want to thank each of you who have walked through our journey with us. Your prayers, love and support have been such a gracious gift. We invite you to join us in the Friendship room after the committal service to share in the 3 Lutheran F’s – fun, food and friendship.
Doris R. Nelson

Doris Rhea Sarver was born
October 29, 1905 to Homer and Zilpha Sarver at Scotsberg, IN. After graduating from High School in Brookings, SD, she taught in a country school in the Brookings School District.
On April 29, 1929, she was united in marriage to John Alfred Nelson in Brookings, SD. Shortly after their marriage, the couple began a seventeen year period of work as agricultural missionaries among the Zulu people in South Africa. It was while living in South Africa that their five children were born. The family moved back to the United States in 1946, living in Brookings, SD during John and Doris’ furlough year. In 1947, they moved to Beresford, SD, where John became the farm manager of the Bethesda Homes farm operation. During that period, Doris worked as a nurse's aid in the Bethesda Home For The Aged and was active in Imanuel Lutheran’s programs of Sunday School, Youth and Women’s ministries.
At age 50, Doris returned to school to earn an LPN degree. When they moved to Hills, MN, where John became the administrator of Tuff Memorial Home, Doris became the charge nurse.
The couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1970 and, in retirement, bought their first home just north of the Augustana College campus. When the work of keeping up a home became too much for them they moved to a Good Samaritan Village duplex and, eventually, into the Village’s nursing care facility. John preceded her in death
on March 27, 1988.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, the Reverend J. David Nelson, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Litchfield, MN; two daughters, Judy Diaz, and her husband, Don, of Colorado Springs, CO; Esther Hunter, and her husband, Bruce, of Sherwood, OR; a son-in-law, Melvin Nelson, of Midland, MI; a daughter-in-law, LaDonna Nelson, of Albert Lea, MN; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a sister, Grace Jones of Madison, SD; and a brother, Haskel Sarver of Rock Island, IL.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death
by her parents, one daughter, one son, one grandson and three sisters.
Nora Larson Foss
Died: Jan 14, 2002
Nora Nelson was born
April 2, 1907, at Cushing, IA, to E. M. ”Martin” and Olena (Roarson) Nelson. The family moved to South Dakota when Nora was 10 years old. She grew up on the family farm and attended the Hanson and Hegge country schools. She then continued her education at the Horticultural School in Brookings.
Nora married
Harvey Larson on June 2, 1934, in Sioux Falls, SD. They made their home in Sioux Falls and Nora became a homemaker and loving mother. He preceded her in death
in July, 1960. Nora then worked for Children’s Care Hospital and School for 10 years. On August 18, 1968, she married
Clarence Foss. Nora also served as a volunteer at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital library. Clarence died
in 1980.
Nora and her husband enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Canada, Mexico, and throughout the U. S. She especially liked visiting relatives in California. In her early years, Nora loved fishing, camping and the outdoors. She cherished all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved holding them as infants. Her cat, Rudi, was her dear companion. Nora was very talented with her hands, especially in crocheting, knitting, sewing and flower gardening. She was a go-getter and a great neighbor. Nora was a member of Central Baptist Church.
In addition to her husbands, Nora was preceded in death
by her parents, one sister, Geneva Hamre, one brother, Marvin Nelson, and one step daughter, Marlene Harms.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Yvonne Foss and her husband, Ron, (stepson) Sioux Falls, SD, and their children, Sheree, Jeff, Rob, and Pamela, her daughter Laurene Tema, Minneapolis, MN, and her children, Renae, Mike, and Melissa; stepdaughter, Carolyn Vollan and her husband, Clare, Sioux Falls, SD, and their children, Rod, Annette, Sandra, and Brian; step grandson, Tony Harms; 14 great-grandchildren; 6 step great-grandchildren; and her brothers, Leonard Nelson, Dell Rapids, SD and Arthur Nelson, Rawlins, WY; special friend and neighbor, Florine Dickerson.
Anton "Tony" Janssen

Anthony “Tony” Janssen was born
May 26, 1907 at Tea, SD. He moved with his family to Hartford, SD where he remained a lifelong resident.
He was united in marriage with Mabel Scheper on June 22, 1936. Tony owned and operated the City Café in Hartford for six years, was a bookkeeper and salesperson for John Deere of Hartford, and worked for Hagen Construction and Peters Construction as a carpenter. Tony worked for Tuthill Lumber for five years, then was sales manager for Ross Lumber, retiring in 1970 after 20 years of service.
Tony was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hartford where he served on the church board as treasurer, a member of the Hartford Volunteer Fire Dept. for over 50 years, was a gun safety instructor for 30 years, and was on the Hartford Town Board for two terms. His wife, Mabel, preceded him in death
on September 21, 1986.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, LeRoy Janssen of Bellevue, NE; two grandchildren, Doug Janssen of Jackson, NE, and Lisa Janssen of Lincoln, NE; two great-granddaughters, Megan and Katelyn; one niece, Vicki Dawley and her husband, Joel, of Sioux Falls; three nephews, Bruce Spars and his wife, Donalene, and Charles Janssen and his wife, Karen, both of Sioux Falls, and Robert Mansfield and his wife, Jeanne, of Orange, CA.

by his parents, John and Teresa Janssen; four brothers, Henry, Bert, John, and an infant brother; and four sisters, Jeanette, Martina, Genevieve, and an infant sister.
Delwin "Bill" Bauer

Delwin “Bill” Bauer, age 78, died
Wednesday at Avera McKennan Hospice.
Bill was born
July 25, 1923, at Java, SD to Fred and Eva (Jacobs) Bauer. He grew up in Java where he received his education. Following high school, Bill entered military service where he served with the 97th Bomb Group in the US Air Force during WW II. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to South Dakota and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, graduating with a business degree. While in college, he was a member of the SAE fraternity.
On August 29, 1953, he was united in marriage with Vivian Voss in Sioux Falls. The couple lived in Sioux Falls where Bill worked as an agent with the Internal Revenue Service. He retired in 1981 after 30 years of service. In retirement, he worked as a tax consultant for 17 years.
Bill was a member of First Lutheran Church, the VFW, Kiwanis Club of Sioux Falls, the American Legion, and 40 et 8.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Vivian, of Sioux Falls; one son, Tom Bauer of Sioux Falls; two daughters, Liz Bergstrom and her husband Dan, of Sioux Falls and Sara Carmody and her husband Don, of Woodstock, NY; grandchildren, Katelin, Aubrey, Brett, McKenzie, Tess, Seth; one brother, Bob Bauer and his wife Eileen of Aberdeen, SD; and one sister, Noella Bauer of Chicago IL.

Robert Tuenge

Robert ‘Bob’ Tuenge was born
September 9, 1936, to Herman and Mary (Oberloh) Tuenge. He attended school at Redfield, SD, and Sioux Vocational in Sioux Falls.
Rich in spirit and personality, for Bob the act of giving was more than a gesture; it was his lifestyle. With the coming of each New Year, he would excitedly pass out pocket calendars to his friends and family members – calendars that he would collect from banks and businesses. He treasured his ability to purchase salt and pepper sets from thrift stores and give them to the Banquet. He collected Bibles for various groups and shut-ins, giving them away as well. He was always concerned with the well being of others, and particularly considered himself to be the prime care provider for his mother.
He faithfully attended Ridgecrest Baptist Church and in his free time, enjoyed collecting baseball cards. He was talented at embroidery and throughout the years had embroidered several pillowcases and household items. He was grateful for any acts of kindness that were bestowed to him. Never passing an opportunity to say thank you for a kind deed, Bob would often purchase greeting cards and give them with thanks, to the members of the Banquet staff and volunteers. Known affectionately as Pee-Wee to his family, his loving and gentle spirit will be well missed.

Charlotte Houser
Died: Jan 21, 2002
Charlotte Neuman, daughter of Emily (Nadler) and Henry Neuman, was born
October 24, 1910 in Davenport, Iowa. She grew up and received her education there. She then attended the University of Iowa.
On December 14, 1932 she was united in marriage to Paul C. Houser in Davenport. Due to Paul’s work the couple lived in Oklahoma City, Burlington, Iowa and later back to Davenport. Charlotte was a loving homemaker and mother who centered her life on her family. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 1947 where Paul owned and operated Dakota Business Machine. Paul preceded her in death
on August 19, 2000.
Charlotte was a long time member of First United Methodist Church and a member of Daughters of the Nile.
Charlotte Neuman Houser was a classy lady. Her constant smile and sharp wit brightened any room she entered. Known for her skillful card playing – she could trump your ace and make you laugh at the same moment. She meticulously tended her prize tomatoes. She loved her home, decorating it with precious treasures from her numerous trips to Europe and beyond. She and her beloved husband Paul enjoyed 65 years of marriage until his death
in 2000. This lovely lady will be fondly remembered by her two sons and their families: Bob and Betsy Houser of Sioux Falls and Dick and Kathee Houser of Flagstaff, Arizona, five grandchildren Bob, Deborah, Linda, Eric and Jennifer, three great grandchildren Emily, Suzanne and Thomas (and one more on the way).
Charlotte remembered every special day and maintained a white-carpeted house with a quiet strength. She was witty and always ready for an adventure. She will be missed by us all.
Alfred Main
Died: Jan 21, 2002
Alfred ‘Al’ Main was born
April 18, 1920 in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Washington High School in 1938. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1938. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific, and was honorably discharged in September, 1945.
He married
Rosella Olson on June 10, 1942 in Sioux Falls. After returning to Sioux Falls, he worked as a salesman, selling heavy construction equipment. In 1957, he opened and operated Main Music, Inc., specializing in pianos and organs.
Al had a great love and appreciation for music. He was an accomplished musician and during his lifetime, he played the violin, drums, bugle, xylophone, piano and organ. He enjoyed sharing his musical talent with others by playing the piano and organ at the State Fair, Shrine events, and other public activities.
In the 1970’s, he wrote the second NIAA Grant that was awarded in the nation to establish an alcohol and drug center in the city. Later, he acted as director of that program. Health problems caused him to leave the field. In 1980, he returned to the construction industry in sales for Sheehan Equipment Co. Later he became president of CDS, Inc., a family owned corporation.
Al was a member of Calvary Episcopal Cathedral, Unity Lodge #130 AF&AM, and the Sioux Falls Scottish Rite. He was active in El Riad Shrine activities for 50 years and received “Shriner of the Year” award in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and a life member of the NRA. He served on the computer committee of the South Dakota Chapter of the AGC. He served on committees and boards of directors of a number of non profit organizations including Executive Director of the CCAA Foundation later known as Keystone Foundation, City of Sioux Falls MBE Advisory Committee, American Indian Services, Project Awareness Board of Directors, nine years on the Board of Directors and three years as President on Reconciliation representing the Minority Contractors Association.
Katherine Maresh
Died: Jan 22, 2002
Katherine Maresh passed away
unexpectedly January 22, 2002 at Covington Heights Care Center in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Maresh was born
to Joseph and Blanche (Shebek) Ziskovsky in Cedar Rapids, IA on December 22, 1915. She graduated from Grant High School and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
After graduation, she served on the faculty of Hastings College in Hasting, NE as Head of the Physical Education Department and Assistant Dean of Women.
She married
Dr. Everett R. Maresh of Cedar Rapids on September 7, 1941 and the couple moved to Detroit, MI where Dr. Maresh was beginning his Residency in Surgery and Katherine was employed as a manager in women’s clothing at J.L. Hudson. Dr. Maresh’s residency was interrupted by duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.
Upon completion of his training in 1949, he accepted the position of Chief of Surgery at the newly constructed Royal C. Johnson Memorial Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls where he served the region’s veterans until his retirement in December 1979.
The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991. Everett preceded her in death
on July 9, 1992.
Kay, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, was active in United Methodist Women, AAUW, Chi Omega Sorority and the 7th District Medical Alliance. She especially enjoyed cheering on local high school and collegiate sports teams and was a loyal member of the Augustana Booster Club.
Her family was foremost in her life and her most joyous hours were spent first with her children and then with her grandchildren and great grandchild. Grandma Kay’s card games around a large table at Lake Okoboji will always be fondly remembered by all her offspring.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet (Ward) Bowersox, Sara and Peggy; 3 sons, James (Inge Dawn) Maresh, Kimberley, Jeffrey and Trenton, John (Diane) Maresh, Amanda, Nikole, Leigh and John Jr., Joe Maresh, Elise, great grandchild, Annastasia.

Marian Flyger
Died: Jan 28, 2002
Marian was born
September 3, 1928, at her family’s farm near Turkey Ridge. She was the fifth of 10 children of Romey and Esther Jorgensen Mellegard and graduated from Hurley High School in 1946.
After attending Southern State College, she was a teacher at a rural school near Swan Lake. Marian later was employed as accountant at the Hurley Elevator and as postal assistant at the Hurley Post Office.
She married
Keith “Skeeter” Flyger on August 21, 1950, in Parker. The couple farmed near Hurley until Keith’s death
June 14, 1965.
Marian then moved into Hurley, where she was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church. She lived there until her health caused her to move to Sioux Falls in 1992. She spent her final five years among friends at Canterbury House Apartments.
Survivors include daughter, Debra Hansen and her husband, Greg, of Hartford; son, Michael Flyger and his wife, Laura, of Sioux Falls; and grandchildren, Tucker, Larissa and Brady Hansen and Austin, Thomas and Grant Flyger.
Marian also is survived by brothers, Norman of Sioux Falls and James “Bud” of Viborg and sisters, Ethel Larsen of Viborg, Marge Jorgensen of Davis, and Jean Christensen of Humboldt, Iowa.
She was preceded in death
by her husband; her parents; brothers, Vern and Richard; and sisters, Dorothy Hansen and Helen Buckstead.
