Charles Pontiero
1919-2009
Charles Pontiero came from Italy in 1939 when he was twenty years old. His Italian name was Gaetano Frank Pontiero. His brothers came to America to follow in their father’s footsteps to start a new life during WWII. Charles was discharged from the Italian military after having food poisoning from a can of horse meat. He later left for America where he was recruited for the U.S. military but pretended not to know English and did not serve.
He moved to Oelwiene, IA where he worked for his uncle at a grocery store for years. Then he was off to Omaha, NE where he worked in junkyard and Greyhound as a mechanic. Later he followed his brother to Kimball, SD where he was a cook at his brother’s restaurant, Jim’s Café. He moved to Kimball because he was told there was land and livestock, which he ultimately dreamt of doing again after leaving his family’s farm in Italy. As he made money he took pride in purchasing land and buying livestock. He had passion for raising livestock and people knew him for his abilities to raise good quality cattle, sheep, and pigs. Charles had a crowd that followed him from all over whenever he sold his livestock. He always had the best cattle on the market and others thought highly of him. After living in the U.S. for 26 years he decided he would go back to Italy to get married. He met Rita and married
her in Italy to bring her back with him. They made a great team raising livestock and caring for their family. Dad always had the old country in him and became successful with what he knew and loved. He worked very hard and always did a lot for us kids. Dad was always genuine and helped anyone the met. The smallest simplest things made him happy. He loved Chevrolet/GMC. When his 1980 pickup didn’t run anymore he opted to overhaul the engine rather than buying a new truck because it had too many buttons. He was very dedicated for what he loved doing. Dad saw beauty in everything. He would always “That’s pretty” or “Thatsa nice.” He loved Corn Flakes, soup, black licorice and Chocolate Gelato, but you would never say no to Mama Rita’s food. He loved Lawrence Welk and The Price is Right. Old Western movies or music always put a smile on his face.
He helped build the Pontiero family mausoleum in Italy, and it was his wish to return there to be with his family and rest in peace.
