Tom Monahan
January 4, 1949 - December 9, 2011
Tom Monahan, a loving husband, father, and dear friend to so, so many of us, died
very unexpectedly of a massive heart attack Friday December 9, 2011, surrounded by his family and a dear friend.
Thomas Leo Monahan was born
in Deadwood, SD, January 4, 1949, to Gladys Fardig Monahan and Leo Thomas Monahan. Tom’s mother died
when he was only 5 years old. Through a series of events, Tom’s young life was deeply blessed when he came to live with Laura and Henry Wildberger. He was embraced as a part of their family and grew up on their ranch in Boulder Canyon. After graduation from Sturgis Brown High School, Tom attended a VoTech in Denver, CO, for one year and then Black Hills State University where he earned a Bachelors degree in art and secondary education.
While working at Dean McNenny’s Gallery 21 in Sturgis, he met his soul mate, Vicki Glaeseman. They were married
August 5, 1971. In 1975, Tom and Vicki were blessed with the birth of their son, San, and in 1978, their daughter, Shanna. Family was deeply precious to Tom and he treasured the years of coaching soccer teams, camping trips, and family vacations with his children.
Tom started his first business, Creative Homes in 1972, building homes for 5 years with Russ Johnson. He taught Building Design and Construction at Western Dakota VoTech for 10 years before joining the staff at Sturgis Brown High School as an Art instructor in 1987. In 1986, Tom created and designed the well-known Official Logo and donated it to the Sturgis Chamber/Jackpine Gypsies as a means of raising funds to support community projects in Sturgis. This Logo later became the Official Sturgis Chamber rally logo. Tom’s next business adventure was creating his silk screening business, Tom’s T’s. A short time later, Tom opened Schwartz & Monahan, a T-shirt retail/wholesale business with his brother-in-law, Lowell Schwartz. In the fall of 1990, after incorporating photography into his art curriculum at Sturgis High School, Tom and Maury LaRue joined forces and opened T&M Photographic Studio Inc. In 1996, he designed and, along with friends, built a new photography studio. Tom received many photographic awards as a professional photographer and captured many memories for many families.
He was deeply honored to be chosen as South Dakota Photographer Of The Year in 1999. In 1997, he added an Art Supply and Magic Shop to his collection of businesses. He was determined to become a master magician. In 2000, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Firefighter by joining the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department. Being a Firefighter was a major part of his life and he was again deeply honored when he was twice selected as Sturgis Volunteer Firefighter Of The Year. In 2002, having never built a steel building, Tom accepted the challenge and, with help from many of his friends, successfully erected a steel building which became the existing Tom’s T’s Print Shop. There he spent countless hours working side by side with his son as a graphic artist. When he put his mind to it, Tom could accomplish incredible things. In 2009, he again challenged his artistic creativity and opened his latest business venture, Sturgis Wine Company. Although, he was greatly involved in community and business endeavors, Tom’s greatest treasure was his family and in particular his grandchildren. They were the blessings that sparkled his life. Tom was passionate for life; he loved deeply, gave freely, played hard, but most of all, he treasured his family and friends.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Vicki; his son, San, and his wife, Jen, and their 3 children, Traeton, Taesha, and Torin; his daughter, Shanna, and her husband, Ethan Dschaak, and their 2 children, Dalyn and Danica; along with many members of his extended family and friends.
Visitation will be from noon until 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Willard Olsen officiating. Burial
