Edith Johnson
VOLIN -- Edith Johnson, age 61, of Volin, SD, passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack, Sunday, December 19, 2004 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Medical Center, Vermillion, SD.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Yankton, SD with Pastor Elaine Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in rural Wakonda, SD at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Visitations will be from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton, SD with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Allen O'Neil, Steve Johnson, Gary Dahlerup, Michael Johnson, Dennis Sundleaf and Jerry Peterson.
Edith was born June 9, 1943, in Yankton, SD to Merle and Barbara (Stafford) Knutson. She married Lyle Johnson on December 29, 1962 in Irene, SD. Edee was happiest when giving of her time and carrying for others. Edee most enjoyed time spent with sons, daughters-in-law, and grandsons -- particularly their sporting events. Between these she served as lead hostess for Christian Women's Club, was active in weekly bible study, and was a member of the ladies aide attending the United Church of Christ in Wakonda for more than 40 years. Edee cared for others throughout her life. Currently she was the full-time care provider for her mother. Earlier she managed Grandma K's Day Care, served as activities director for area nursing homes, and worked at the University of South Dakota. Music was also a major part of her life whether singing with the Sweet Adeline's or playing the organ in the area. Edee was interested in horses since childhood, more recently serving as an officer in the Arabian Horse Society of South Dakota. This past year, Edee, especially enjoyed finishing her new home with husband, Lyle. Her friends and family will miss her.
Her memory is cherished by her husband, Lyle of Volin, SD; sons: Kipton (Vicki) of Volin, SD and Mark (Michelle) of Yankton, SD; grandsons: Zach and Tyler Johnson of Yankton; mother, Barbara Jean Knutson of Yankton, SD; brother, Wayne (Trina) Knutson of Volin, SD; sisters: Charlotte (Ron) Jensen of Park Rapids, MN, Janet (Jim) Lewis of Carrabassett Valley, ME, Susan Matthew of Yankton, SD, and Tami (Roger) Jueden of Yankton, SD.
Her father and grandparents preceded her in death.
Kenneth Nelson
VIBORG -- Kenneth Nelson, 92, of Viborg died December 28, 2004, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton.
Services are Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg.
Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. today (Thursday) with family present from 7-8 p.m. at the Viborg Funeral Home.
Survivors are a daughter, Rita (Dan) Wentworth of Yankton and a son, Richard (Roberta) of Brady, NE; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Jeff E. Wallum
SIOUX FALLS -- Jeff E. Wallum, 56, of Sioux Falls died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 2004) at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, after a short-term cancer illness.
Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, DeSmet, with the Rev. Dick Poppen and Vicar Russ Trachte officiating.
Burial is in Manchester Cemetery, Manchester.
Visitations from 5-8 p.m. today (Thursday), with family present from 7-8 p.m., at Osthus Funeral Home, DeSmet.
Elnora Mattheis
PARKSTON -- Elnora Mattheis, 77, Parkston, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2004) at her apartment in Parkston.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 27, at Salem Lutheran Church, Parkston.
Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Sunday December 26, at Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Parkston.
Grateful for having shared her life are her nieces and nephews: Rudolf Jerke (Diana), Scotland; Edna Koerner (Myron), Freeman; Leonard Jerke (Kathy), Madison; Darold Mattheis (Betty), Parkston; Phyllis Mulso (Skip), Penrose, CO; Mary Ann Neugebauer (David), Dimock; Marlene Wuertzer (Ernest), Parkston; and Kenneth Henke (Cynthia), Parkston.
Steven Sip
TYNDALL -- Steven John Sip, 29 of Tyndall, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004, at Bon Homme High School, Tyndall, South Dakota, with Pastor Phil Lint officiating. Music will be provided by Diane Bryan, organist, and Mary-Lee Lint, soloist. Interment is the Country Presbyterian Cemetery, Wagner, South Dakota.
Honorary casketbearers are members of the Tyndall Volunteer Fire Department Elliott Hose Company #1. Casketbearers are Steven Auch, Brian Brown, Joe Blaha, Mike Blaha, Paul Hanson and Nathan Schoenfelder.
Visitation is from noon-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, South Dakota. Visitation resumes from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at United Methodist Church, Wagner, South Dakota.
Steven John Sip was born on August 7, 1975, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Vernon John Sip and Judith (Ghyselinck) Sip. He attended grade school in Wagner, South Dakota, and graduated from Wagner High School. Steve worked for Pizza Ranch in Wagner. He spent two winters in Winter Park, Colorado, where he worked at a ski resort performing snow removal and driving the shuttle bus. Steve later worked for CR Industries in Springfield, South Dakota, and had currently been employed as a custodian with Bon Homme High School in Tyndall.
His interests included gun collecting and coin collecting, playing poker, welding and collecting radios.
Steve was a dedicated member of the Tyndall Volunteer Fire Department. He loved the time he spent in service to the department, whether it be working on equipment at the fire hall or going to a call in the company of his friends and fellow firefighters. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion and served as Chaplain.
Steve's memory will be cherished by his father, Vernon, of Wagner, South Dakota; his mother, Judith Sip of Boise, Idaho; three sisters: Patricia (Dale) Auch of Magnolia, Minnesota, Lisa (Paul) Schoenfelder of Boise, Idaho and Lori Cerny of Dorchester, Nebraska; 11 nieces and nephews; five great-nephews; and his friend and roommate, Paul.
His grandparents preceded Steve in death.
Donna Stevens
HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Donna M. Stevens, age 80 of Hartington, NE died on Sunday, December 19, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, NE with the Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington, NE.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a 2 p.m. rosary and a Vigil Service at 8:15 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, NE.
Donna Mary was born on August 15, 1924, in Hartington, NE to Andrew S. and Anna M. (Backman) Foulk. She grew up in Hartington and attended Hartington High School and worked for the cafe at the Hartington Hotel until moving to Sioux City, Iowa. Donna was a waitress for Green Gables and graduated from Edwards Business School. She began working for Hansen Glass and Paint. She was married on February 26, 1945, to Roger G. Lindberg in Hartington, NE. She and Roger then moved to Hartington where she worked for Tina's (Perk) New Time Dress Shop. She worked there until moving to Norfolk, NE in 1952. In Norfolk, Donna worked at Mary's Cafe and Silikes Dress Shop. She moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1960 and worked for Wagner, Johnson & Rasmus Orthodontists for more than 25 years. Roger died in December 1962 at the age of 41. Her second marriage was to Anthony Stevens in 1971 in Las Vegas, NV. Anthony died on January 10, 1991, at the age of 78. Donna then moved back to Hartington in 1992.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Perpetual Adoration; she loved music, bowling, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by four children: Connie Dyer of Tampa, Florida; Vickie and husband, Norman Hoopingarner Jr., Sioux City, Iowa; Charles Lindberg, Tucson, Arizona; Sandy and husband Charles Xikes, Leigh Acres, Florida; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister and her husband, Delores and Harvey Summers, Hartington, NE; one brother and his wife, Chalmer and Irene Foulk, Hartington, NE; one niece, Pam Mohr, Sioux City, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Roger and Anthony and one sister, Blanche Burns.
Rose Freidel
WAKONDA -- Rose M. Freidel, age 91, of Wakonda, passed away Saturday, December 25, 2004, at Avera Wakonda Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Wakonda, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton.
Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton.
Pallbearers will be Robert List, David List, Alan Schenkel and Vern Machacek.
Rose was born March 12, 1913, in Yankton, SD to Joseph and Anna (Mudloff) Beran. She grew up in the Yankton area and attended the Yankton Lakeport School. Rose lived in Yankton until she married Charles Freidel on September 14, 1937, in Tyndall, SD. They moved to Nebraska where they farmed until 1954. She moved to Platte, SD where she worked as a cook at the Restaurant Cafe for 20 years. She moved to Wakonda to be near her daughter in 2000. She was a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Rose is survived by her children; Helen (Vern) Machacek of Platte, SD; Ruth (Bernie) Steffen of Wakonda, SD; and Melvin (Carolyn) Freidel of Clayton, DE; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
James Ded
KAYLOR -- James Ded, 56, of Kaylor died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 2004) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home, Scotland.
Ralph Pederson
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ralph W. Pederson, 90, of Anaheim, Calif., died Dec. 25, 2004, after a long battle with cancer at his home in Anaheim, Calif.
He is survived his wife, Sally of Ahaheim and their family and his sisters: Ruth Ann Valleau of San Diego, Calif.; and Jane Gurney of Yankton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Don and Bob.
Chester Peterson
GAYVILLE -- Chester F. Peterson, 88, of Gayville, SD died Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.
He was a resident of the Wakonda Heritage Manor at the time of his death.
Chester was born June 27, 1916, in Gayville to Martin and Hannah (Pearson) Peterson. He graduated from the Gayville High School, and worked as a welder for several meat packing plants in Sioux City, IA. On July 12, 1941, he married Inez Sorensen in Gayville. He served with the army engineers in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.
After the War, he and Inez began farming south of Gayville until 1988 when they moved into town.
Chester was a member of the Gayville Lutheran Church, The American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. He loved his family and growing Gladiolas, and he was a suffering Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.
He is survived by his two sisters: Ethel Larson of Wakonda and Helen Ryken of Gayville and four children: Richard (Juanita) of Wewela, SD, Robert (Sharyl) of Grand Jct. CO, Patricia Peterson of Gayville and Tom (Julie) of Fargo, ND, and two grandchildren: Randy and Cindy.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Gayville Lutheran Church, with burial to follow in the Danish Lutheran Cemetery rural Gayville.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with the family present at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Mildred Koster
Mildred Koster, age 74, of Yankton, SD, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2004, at the South Ridge Nursing Home, Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. David Gunderson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Yankton.
Visitations will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, and then one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Koster, Steve Stucky, Jim Stucky, Mathis Stucky, Craig Stucky, and Andrew Seiner. Honorary pallbearers will be all of her Senior Citizens Center friends.
Mildred was born June 7, 1930, in Freeman, SD, to Christ and Mary (Hofer) Stucky. She was baptized at Martinus Lutheran Church, was raised and attended school in Olivet and Freeman, SD. She married Edwin Schmuck and lived in Carpenter, SD, and then Duane Koster in 1952, and lived in Mission Hill and Yankton, SD. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Center (lifetime), Women of the Moose and St. John's Lutheran Church. She worked at Montgomery Ward, the Human Services Center and Rich Brother's Fireworks for 23 years retiring in 1990. She also worked at the Senior Citizens Center for 8 years, where she made many friends, and always had a "smile" for the members. Millie enjoyed her family, friends, bingo and card games.
Her memory is cherished by two sons" Dale Schmuck of Rapid City, SD, and Randy (Patty) Koster of Mesa, AZ; three daughters: Gail (Melvin) Eckert of Rapid City, SD; Kris Rauscher of Sioux Falls, SD; and Mary (Dave) Tenneboe of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; four brothers: Kenneth (Doris) Stucky of Yankton, SD; Dennis (Jeanette) Stucky of Sioux Falls, SD; Allen (Joyce) Stucky of Sioux Falls, SD; and Terry (Sally) Stucky of Yankton, SD.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, parents, and one infant brother Delmar, and special friend Emmett Dwyer.
