Terry, son of Ed and Alice (Oltmanns) Ducheneaux, was born in Mobridge on November 17, 1940. Terry started school in Promise and in 1948 went to Stephan Indian Mission School near Chamberlain. In 1952 he returned to Mobridge to attend school.
After leaving school Terry worked in many places. From working in Texas to the cherry/bean/peach fields in Oregon (where he and his Aunt Adeline got fired) to the oil rigs by Lantry. In 1963 Terry sustained many injuries from a car accident which resulted in about a six month stint in and out of the hospital. Shortly after recovering he met Nancy and the rest is history. On May 18, 1964 Terry married the love of his life, Nancy Mae Hempel of McLaughlin in Pierre. After getting married Terry and Nancy moved to Armstrong County for a short while then returning to the family ranch in Promise.
Terry loved being around people and entertaining everyone who crossed his path. He could often be heard telling jokes, laughing, and stirring up someone’s blood over something he had said. Later in his life, Terry parked at the local casino in hopes of seeing friends, visiting with people and hoping to win something.
Family, traveling and ranching was important to Terry. He loved to load up Nancy and as many children as he could find and take them on extended trips to see family on the west coast. On one memorable trip, they took eight kids to the west coast and on the return to South Dakota every one of them got sick somewhere in the Canadian mountains. In 1974, he took Nancy to Yugoslavia and the locals fell in love with “the cowboy.” They loved him so much he left his hat and boots with some of the local kids he met. In 1980, he took Nancy and his mom, Alice, to Hawaii. Terry’s passion was always the ranch life. Early in life he learned the ins and outs of ranching from his father. He loved everything about ranching: the early mornings, mud, cows, horses, haying, and all that entailed his way of life. One of his joys in life was to call his friends in family in the wee hours of the morning to laugh and joke. The early morning phone calls will be missed by all.
