Wallace 'Jack' Landell
WAUSA, Neb. -- Wallace "Jack" Landell, 82, died Oct. 20, 2004.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Thabor Lutheran Church, Wausa, Neb. Clergy is Reverend Daniel Monson. Interment is in the Lutheran Cemetery, Wausa, Neb.
Pallbearers are Doc and Bernice Gillilan, Mangus and Gerry Kristensen, and Roger and Cora Swanson.
Arrangements are by Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home, Wausa, Nebraska.
Wallace "Jack" Landell was born December 13, 1921, in Wausa, Nebraska, to Nels and Hulda Landell. He was confirmed at Thabor Lutheran Church in Wausa on May 31, 1936, and attended Fairview Rural School and Wausa High School, graduating in 1938. On May 2, 1940, Jack was married to Fern Sumner. He farmed by Wausa all of his life.
Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Dave and Dodie Landell of Bloomfield; daughter, Holly Sexton of Lincoln; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Scott and Alicia Sexton; great grandchildren, Tyler Brown and Bradley Carter; sister and brother-in-law: Glenda and Andy Folck; sister-in-law: Ruth Landell; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern; his parents; one brother, James of Shelton, Neb.; father and mother-in-law, Doc and Maggie Sumner of Bloomfield; brother-in-law, Doc Sumner; and sister-in-law, Harriett Short.
Memorials are to be directed to Thabor Tots Day Care.
Alberta Crowe
Funeral services for Alberta Crowe, 71, of Fort Thompson will be Saturday, October 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Fort Thompson Community Center at Fort Thompson, SD, with burial in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Crow Creek, SD.
Wake services will be Thursday, October 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church in Yankton, SD. There will also be wake services on Friday, October 22 at 8 p.m. at the Fort Thompson Community Center in Fort Thompson, SD.
Alberta Sylvia Jones was born on February 15, 1933, at Pierre, SD, to Stanley and Rebecca (Philbrick) Jones. She attended school at Pierre, SD, and graduated from high school at Yankton Central in Yankton, SD. After graduation she enrolled in nursing school at Pierre, SD. On March 11, 1953, Alberta was united in marriage to Louis Crowe at Luverne, MN. They made their home in Yankton and she raised their family. After her father passed away in 1997, she returned to Fort Thompson where she remained until health conditions forced her to become a resident at Sunset Valley Haven Nursing Home in Chamberlain in April of 2002.
Alberta passed away on October 20, 2004, at Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain at the age of 71 years, 8 months, and 5 days.
Gratefully sharing her life are her children: Virgil, Alan and James Crowe, all of Fort Thompson; Everette Crowe of Tucson, AZ; Louis Crowe, Jr. of Yankton, SD; Rebecca Taylor of Fort Thompson, SD; Kathy Crowe of Sioux Falls, SD; and Waunita Denney of Yankton, SD; brothers: Everette Jones, Sr. and John Jones, both of Fort Thompson, SD, and George Jones of Selfridge, ND; sisters: Mildred World Turner of Chamberlain, SD; Roberta Maes of Colorado Springs, CO; Charlotte Payer of Winnebago, NE; and Audrey Jones of Fort Thompson, SD; many grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Louis Crowe, Sr.; daughter Candice Crowe; grandson Ira Hawk; brothers, Robert, Cornelious, and Stanley, Jr.; and sisters Sophie, Winnifred and Ramona.
Olga Anderson
IRENE -- Olga M. Anderson, 91, died Thursday, October 7, 2004, at Avera Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Irene.
Olga Helgager was born June 6, 1913, at Freeman, SD, to Hans & Minnie (Olsen) Helgager. She grew up in the Freeman area and attended Freeman country school.
She married Arnold K. Anderson May 24, 1934, at Olivet, SD. The couple farmed for many years, retiring in 1987 and moving into the town of Irene. Olga enjoyed being a homemaker and entertaining her families. She was also active with church organizations.
Survivors include, two sons: Ralph (Kathy) of Scotts Bluff, NE, Randy (Pam), Irene, SD; daughter, Karyn (Don) Nelson, Yankton, SD; also 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters. She was the last survivor of 13 children.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene. Burial will follow in the Turkey Valley Lutheran Cemetery, rural Irene.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, October 10, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
Norbert Reifenrath
CROFTON, Neb. -- Norbert P. Reifenrath, age 89 of Crofton, died on Wednesday, October 13, 2004, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton, SD.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, NE with the Rev. Joseph Broudou officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Constance, NE.
Visitation will be on Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, from 3:00-9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 8:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, NE. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Chad Reifenrath, Casey Reifenrath, Brent Mueller, Jon Ballard, Brandon Smith and Brent Tschirren. Honorary pallbearers will be Susan Smith, Jenny Tschirren, Tasha Mueller and Annie Goeden.
Norbert was born on a farm southwest of Constance, NE on May 5, 1915 to Frank Gerlach and Theresa (Mueller) Reifenrath. He grew up in the Constance community with his five brothers and two sisters. He attended St Joseph's School and Church in Constance. Norbert helped farm with his father and brothers for many years. He married Viola Arens on Sept. 25, 1944, at Crofton. They resided on a farm southwest of Constance which Norbert's parents homesteaded when they married. They continued farming with his dad and brothers and later purchased the farm and lived there for 42 years. They moved to their new home in Crofton in 1986. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.
Norbert was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and served on the parish council, member of the Holy Name Society, NFO, was a former linesman and secretary for Fairview Telephone Co., and was a former board member of the Crofton Golf Course. Norbert was a baseball pitcher with the Constance team for many years and later enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards. During his retirement, he helped in the development of the Crofton Lakeview Golf Course. He loved being a part of the progress and was very proud of it. He read the newspaper in detail every day and was always concerned about our country and had a deep respect of Mother Nature. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his daughter and family in Las Vegas during the winter months. His grandchildren will always cherish the tractor rides, the go-cart, baseball games, golfing, the garden, flying kites, 4th of July fireworks, and their visits after school. We will always remember his big blue eyes, calm temperament, and the love he gave to each of us.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Viola, 4 children and their spouses, Connie and Dave Ballard of Las Vegas, NV; Mick and Kathy Reifenrath, Terry and Mike Mueller, Marie and Randy Goeden, all of Crofton, NE; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Susan and Brandon Smith, Jon Ballard, Chad Reifenrath, Casey Reifenrath, Brent Mueller, Jenny and Brent Tschirren, Tasha Mueller, Annie Goeden, one great grandchild, Sydny Mueller, 2 brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Kay Reifenrath, Crofton, Don and Imogene Reifenrath, Crofton, and one sister and her husband, Laura and Clarence Arens, Crofton.
He was preceded in death by his parents 3 brothers, George, Albert, and Rudolph Reifenrath, and one sister, Mary Ann Leise.
Noel Kollars
TABOR -- Noel Kollars, age 77 of Tabor, SD, passed away at his residence early Tuesday, October 26, 2004.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2004, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. Joe Puthenkulathil and Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor, with a Scripture service followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Noel was born July 18, 1927, at Crofton, NE to Martin and Anna (Kleinschimdt) Kollars. He attended country schools and attended St. Rose until the 8th grade and then graduated from Crofton High School in 1944. He farmed with his family until January of 1945. He entered the Army in 1946 where he worked in a dental clinic. After his discharge he farmed for a short time before moving to Lincoln, NE where he worked in appliance service and auto parts for three years. . He married Helen Estes on December 1, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in Yankton, SD. He moved to California in July of 1955 and found work at Con Vair Aircraft until 1958. He then moved back to Yankton in 1958 and worked as a carpenter until farming again in 1964 until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, and the Moose Lodge in Yankton, SD
His memory is cherished by his wife Helen of Tabor, three sons Michael (Kathy) of McCook Lake, SD, Gregory of Bonesteel, SD, and John (Linda) of Bronson, IA; one daughter Mary Jo (Rockey) Waggoner of Yankton, SD. Ten grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Two brothers Glenn Kollars of Lincoln, NE and Aaron (Cathy) Kollars of Alamogordo, NM. Three sisters Marcella Eisenhauer of Hartington, NE, Cynthia Krzywicki of Chicago, IL, and Antoinette (Dick) Smith of Big Bear Lake, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one infant daughter, one sister-in-law, and two brother-in-laws.

Reuben Petersen
SIOUX FALLS -- Reuben T. Petersen, 78, of Sioux Falls, died Monday, November 1, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital.
Reuben was born February 8, 1926, at rural Irene, SD. He attended rural Sletten School #55 through 8th grade. He later served in the U.S. Navy from February of 1944 until receiving his honorable discharge in 1946.
Upon his return from the Navy, Reuben worked as a farm hand before starting employment at a parts man for C.H. Gunderson and Son at Irene, SD. He worked there from 1951 through 1972, at which time he transferred to Groseth International at Yankton, SD where he worked until his retirement in 1988.
He was united in marriage with Evone Flynn on November 20, 1957, at St. Patrick Church in Wakonda, SD. The couple lived in Irene until moving to Yankton in 1973. In 1994, Reuben and Evone moved to Sioux Falls.
Reuben was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion in Irene, SD where he had held membership since 1946. He was also a past Commander of the Irene Legion Post. He had also been a member of the Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls, and a former member of the Elks Lodge in Yankton.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Evone, of Sioux Falls; three sisters: Joyce Eli and Helen (Arnie) Sorensen, both of Viborg, SD, and Beatrice Fjordbach, of Sioux Falls, SD; his sisters-in-law, Elaine (Cliff) Johnke of Irene, SD, and Viee Summers, of Blue Springs, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Vera Bjerkaas; and two brothers: Howard and Robert.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Christ The King Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Columbkill Cemetery in Wakonda, SD at 1:30 p.m.
A Scripture service, followed by a rosary, will be held 7:00 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location, Sioux Falls.
Harold A. 'Bompi' Knutsen
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Harold A. "Bompi" Knutsen, 89, of Port Orchard, Wash., died quietly at home October 30, 2004.
Harold was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Walshtown, South Dakota, to Ernest and Tillie Knutsen. He was the eighth of 10 children. On September 16, 1936, Harold married his love, Dorothy Donnelly. They celebrated 66 wonderful years together until her death in 2002. Harold owned and operated Airways Rent A Car in Bremerton until his retirement in the 1980s.
He is survived by his brother, Morris Knutsen of San Diego, CA; twin sister, Hazel Gingras of Bloomingdale, IL; sister, Esther McCartney of Santee, CA; his daughter, Kay Nelson and her husband, Chriss, of Port Orchard; son, Gary Knutsen and his wife, Tami, of Bend, OR.; son, Lance Knutsen and his wife, Sara, of Daytona Beach, FL; son, Michael Knutsen and his wife, Roberta, of Port Orchard; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and his loving canine companion, Reba.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, two brothers and four sisters.
A celebration of Harold's life will be held on Nov. 20, 2004, from 2-4 p.m. at the home of Kay and Chriss Nelson, 3954 Weathers Ct. SE, Port Orchard WA, 98366.
Emmett J. Dwyer
Emmett J. Dwyer, age 83, of Yankton, passed away early Thursday, November 4, 2004, at Avera Yankton Care Center from a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Joseph Thalanany officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2004, at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD.
Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Seiner, Tom Larson, Allen Merrill, Tim Branaugh, Doug Matuska, and Eugene Slaba. Honorary pallbearers will be the Yankton Senior Citizens Staff.
Emmett was born July 29, 1921, at Wakonda, SD, to Thomas J. and Frances (Larsen) Dwyer. He was baptized at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Wakonda, SD. He graduated from Wakonda High School in 1939 and worked in Wakonda until he joined the Army where he was honorably discharged in 1946. Emmett worked for Frank Branaugh Construction for 20 years and at the Human Services Center until he retired in 1985. He was active at the Yankton Senior Center where he was volunteer of the month in 2001 and 2003. He drove bus for the Yankton Senior Center. Emmett will be remembered for his love of Bingo, watching the Chicago Cubs and NY Yankees. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Yankton, SD. He was always ready with jokes and hugs. He was proud of his Irish heritage and his greatest joy was his grandson, Andrew.
His memory is cherished by one daughter-in-law, Ann Seiner of Yankton; grandson, Andrew Seiner of Yankton; special friend, Millie Koster and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ardel, son Don Seiner, and life-long partner Sophia Seiner.
Elizabeth 'Betty' Lucas
Elizabeth "Betty" Lucas, age 83 of Yankton passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 12, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Visitations will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Robert Barger, Benjamin Lucas, Chad Madson, Brian Hanson, Sean Sundermann and Darren Ellwein.
She was born June 12, 1921, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Harry and Kate (Lowe) Anderson. She moved with her family to the Walshtown area at the age of 6 where she attended Walshtown School through the eighth grade. She was baptized and confirmed at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill. She attended Irene High School for 3 years. Upon her father's death, she moved to Yankton with her family and graduated from Yankton High School in 1939. She worked in a war plant for 2 years before earning her teaching degree from Mount Marty College.
She married Arnold Lucas on November 7, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. They farmed west of Yankton and in the Utica area until purchasing a farm in rural Irene in 1957. She taught in Yankton County Schools for 29 years and the Title Program in Irene for 9 years; retiring in 1987.
In 1996, she and Arnold moved to Yankton where she did volunteer work at Sacred Heart School for several years. Arnold passed away on May 2, 2001. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and The Retired Teachers Association.
She enjoyed playing Pinochle and games with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, writing poetry, and watching Nascar races.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Robert (Linda) Lucas, Irene, SD; daughter, Gloria (James) Barger, Utica, SD; six grandchildren: Robert (Lisa) Barger, Julie Slate, Kristin (Chad) Madson, Rebecca (Brian) Hanson, Benjamin Lucas and Rachel Lucas; six great-grandchildren: Kayla, Austin, and Dillon Barger, Tanner Slate, Brooke and Lexi Madson; two sisters: Thelma Avery, Yankton, SD and Ida Blackman, Council Bluffs, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; great-granddaughter, Brenna Hanson; brothers: Rupert, Harry, and one in infancy; sister, Arlene McHenry; and her parents.
