Elizabeth Waring, 94
In memoriam
Elizabeth Dorward Hutton Waring died peacefully in her sleep at the Butte Convalescent Center on Thursday.
Born into a tenant farmer's family in Liff Village, five miles from Dundee, Scotland, in 1908, Beth Waring was raised as a hardworking farm girl, delivering milk, digging potatoes, and caring for her younger brother and sisters. At age 16, Beth was working full-time as a domestic servant for the village doctor, and then became a caregiver at the nearby mental hospital.
In 1929, Beth and her sister Meg followed their older sister Jean to the New World, arriving in Vancouver, British Columbia, at age 21. There she worked as a laundress, meat-canner, and retail clerk through the worst days of the Great Depression. She met George H. Waring of St. John, New Brunswick, at a local dance and was married in 1936. The two established a successful small bookstore in Vancouver just before World War II. Her husband was called to the war effort in 1940, so Beth raised her son alone through the war years.
Beth accompanied her husband to Seattle at war's end and the two worked as housekeepers, and managed several apartment houses in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood until his death in 1967. She continued to work as a janitress until a life-threatening traffic accident forced her into a long recuperation in 1970.
Beth resided on the Butte Hill with her son from 1976 until she entered the Butte Convalescent Center in the 1990s. All who knew Beth remember her love of Scots music, company, and gathering friends about the table. Her life was one dedicated to hard work, love of family and friends, and service to those in need.
Beth is survived by her sisters, Jessie and Nell, brothers, David and Dennis, and special niece, Aileen, and extended family all in Dundeee.
In Butte, Beth is survived by son, George H. Waring and his wife Mary Kay Craig, his sister-in-law, Sue Gassenberg; special friend, Sister Pat Perko, BVM, and Beth's attentive grand god children, Jerry, Tia and Tamara Hayden.
We extend to all at the Butte Convalescent Center who compassionately and lovingly cared for Beth during her Alzheimer's-afflicted years our most profound gratitude. Bless you, one and all. We know you share our grief at Beth's passing.
A memorial service for Beth will be Saturday at 9 a.m. in the chapel at Holy Spirit Parish with Sister Pat Perko presiding.
Memorials, if desired, may be sent to the Butte Humane Society, BARC, or the Butte Food Bank.
