JEAN MARIE CROMPTON
The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean Marie Crompton, 79, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Friday, August 12, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Jean died Monday, August 8, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, August 11, with family present from 5:30-7pm and a Wake Service with Rosary at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Jean Marie Schurr was born on July 8, 1932 to Martin and Marie (Kub) Schurr at Faulkton, SD. She grew up and attended school in the Ipswich area, graduating from Ipswich High School. After receiving her education, she moved to Janesville, WI.
Jean married Merlin Crompton on July 2, 1952 at Ipswich, SD. They made their home in Janesville for nearly 20 years before moving to the family farm near Roscoe in 1971. Jean did the bookkeeping for the family construction business and farm and kept busy raising five sons. They moved to Aberdeen in 1980.
Jean was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen.
Grateful for having shared Jean’s life are her husband, Merlin of Aberdeen, five sons: Chuck (Dianne) Crompton of Aberdeen, Jim Crompton of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, John (Deb) Crompton of Pierre, SD, David (Jane) Crompton of Shoreview, MN and Tom (Deb) Crompton of Hugo, MN, her sister Judy (Tom) Preston of Omaha, NE, fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Marie Schurr and her brother Jim Schurr.
JEANNE ELAINE FORSYTH
Funeral service for Jeanne Elaine Forsyth, 89, Aberdeen will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Northwestern United Methodist Church in Mellette, SD. Pastor Jon Damaska will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Northville, SD. Jeanne died on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1:00pm-7:00pm Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.
Jeanne Elaine (Gaffney) Forsyth was born on April 8, 1922 in Vermont, IL to Lucile (Pennington) and Walter Clare Gaffney. At age 7, after her mother’s death, Jeanne was raised by her grandparents, Rosaline and Walter Bernard Gaffney. Jeanne grew up in Vermont, attended grade school and graduated as valedictorian of Vermont High School in 1940.
Because she was awarded an academic scholarship, in 1940-1941, Jeanne was able to attend and graduate from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. Jeanne played on the college tennis team, and through the years enjoyed watching tennis on television. At Chillicothe, Jeanne met Robert Forsyth of Northville, SD.
On August 3, 1941, Jeanne and Bob were married in Wichita, Kansas where they both worked for oil companies. When Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, Jeanne moved back to her grandparents in Vermont. Their son John was born during a blizzard in Macomb, Illinois after a wild twenty mile ride to the hospital in the only available conveyance-a hearse.
In 1945, Jeanne purchased a house she had never seen in Northville and moved from Illinois with her baby son to wait for Bob’s return from World War II. Jeanne and John made the trip in the cab of a cattle truck. Jeanne and Bob added a daughter, Joy, and lived in this home for fifty seven years until they moved to the Lakewood Apartments in Aberdeen in December of 2002. In September of 2005, Jeanne moved to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen where she enjoyed cards and crafts and received loving care from the nurses and aides.
Jeanne loved working in her Northville home and yard and had a keen sense of design and decorating. She worked at the Mansfield State Bank for a few years. Jeanne enjoyed her flower garden, holidays, crossword puzzles, playing bridge and bingo and was an avid reader. She loved watching her children and grandchildren’s events at Northwestern and was a devoted fan of NSU basketball, rarely missing a game. In later life, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest pleasures.
In her younger years, Jeanne belonged to the Northville American Legion Auxiliary and the Northville Methodist Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Northwestern United Methodist Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, John (Madlynn) Forsyth of Northville; her daughter, Joy (David) Thorson of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, Eric (Wendy) Thorson of Mansfield, Shannon (Terry) Bohl of Northville, Tyler (Christyl) Forsyth of Aberdeen and Marc Thorson of Aberdeen; six great grandchildren, Cameron, Gavin, and Hayden Bohl; Miranda and Josh Thorson; and Jaidyn Forsyth; sister-in-law, Helen Forsyth of Claremont, California; and several nieces and nephews.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty four years, Bob, on July 1, 2005; her parents and grandparents; two brothers, James (Ardis) Gaffney and Walter Clare (Red) Jr. (Idella) Gaffney; two brothers-in-law, William Forsyth and James (Florence) Forsyth; and one sister-in-law, Margaret (William) Mitchell.

EMMA NELSON
Emma Nelson, 92, of Britton, died Aug. 4, 2011 at the Aberdeen Health & Rehab.
Funeral service will be Monday, Aug. 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm at First Lutheran Church in Britton.
Burial will follow at the Britton Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 PM Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 at Price Funeral Home, Britton.
Emma Christina Spitzer was born to David and Katharina (Nehlich) Spitzer on November 24, 1918 at Wishek, N.D. As a child she moved with her family to Eureka, S.D. where she grew up and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. As a young woman, she moved to Britton, S.D. where she met Francis Nelson and later married on July 3, 1936 at Plankinton, S.D.
For years, she was the manager of The Coffee Bar Café. She also worked at the bakery and the Britton cleaners.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle. She loved working in the garden and was known for her beautiful flowers. She was also an excellent cook and loved to bake. Oh, how we loved her kuchen, hers was the best! Emma was a very loving and caring person. There was nobody more important than her family and she had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her friends were also very important to her.
After her retirement, she and Francis spent time at their lake home, where they fished and enjoyed the outdoors. She also liked to golf with Francis.
Grateful for having shared Emma’s life are her daughter, Frieda (H.Oscar) Schlenker, Aberdeen, son, James (Judy) Nelson of Arizona, granddaughters Lori (William) Schumacher, Susan (Matthew) Splett, Kari (Fred) Haines, and Kristi Nelson, grandson Keith (Keri) Nelson, great grandchildren Emily, Julia, Jaime, and Kayla, great-great-grandchildren Tavis and Bryson. brothers Ruben “Tom” and Marvin Spitzer and sister-in-laws, Viola Spitzer, Leone Nelson, and Norma Martin and many nieces and nephews, special friends Lorena Johnson and Peggy Pierson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis, sisters Frieda and Jane, brothers John, Jake, Otto, Edwin, and Herbert.
ALLEN LYNN BUSS
Funeral service for Allen Lynn Buss, 45, Champlin, MN will be 11:00am, Monday, August 8, 2011 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen, SD with Pastor Harold Watrous officiating. Burial will be in Veblen Cemetery. Allen died Tuesday, August 2, at the United Hospital at St. Paul, MN.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00pm, with a prayer service at 7:00pm Sunday at the church in Veblen. Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.
Allen Lynn Buss was born on October 29, 1965 at Sisseton, SD to Wayne Lynn & Karen Anita (Guy) Buss. He grew up and attended school in Veblen, SD. He graduated from Veblen High School with the class of 1984. He worked for Crandall’s Fur Company and BDM Rural Water. He later moved to Gwinner, ND where he worked for Melroe Bobcat Company. Due to a car accident which left him a quadriplegic he spent a year in rehab at the Courage Center in Maple Grove and then moved to Champlin, MN.
Allen served on the board for Capable Partners and was a coordinator for them setting up hunting excursions. Allen volunteered at United Generations for disabled hunters and was also a volunteer and mentor for the Courage Center. He was also a member of Pheasants Forever and the Make a Wish Foundation.
Grateful for having shared Allen’s life are his sister, Anita Luce (Shane Sattler), Bath, SD, Scott (Tamara) Buss, Sioux Falls, SD, Waylin (Amy) Buss, Harrisburg, SD, Aaron (Shasta) Buss, Lake City, SD, nieces and nephews, Randall (Melissa), Philip (Ivory), Eli, Ava, Austin, Jackson, Madison, Augustus and Gunnar, great nephews, Hunter, Gavin, Carter and Evan.
Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Karen Buss, grandparents, Lynn and Mable Buss and Carvin and Anita Guy.
WILLIAM “BILL” DELINE
The funeral service for William “Bill” DeLine, 64, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30am, Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Aberdeen Alliance Church, with Pastor Kerry Ascher officiating, military honors by Sidney L. Smith, Post 24. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Bill died Tuesday, July 26, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Wednesday, with family present from 4-7, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.
William LeRoy DeLine was born October 3, 1946 in Albert Lea, MN to William Henry and Mildred (Thomas) DeLine. He graduated from Minneapolis Vocational High School in 1965. In October of that year he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served as an infantry rifleman in Vietnam for two years, receiving honors including a purple heart. He married Jean McQuillen on October 23, 1971 in Golden Valley, MN. They moved to Aberdeen in 1974. Bill worked construction and facility maintenance at various companies, most recently at Aberdeen Chrysler Center. He retired in 2002 due to declining health. In addition, he was a volleyball referee and a 30 year ASA umpire.
Bill enjoyed reading, as well as going to and watching sporting events. He was a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 852, Dakota Dogs Pound #289.
Grateful for having shared Bill’s life are his wife Jean DeLine of Aberdeen; one son Will (Donna) DeLine, and beautiful granddaughters Hannah and Elly, all of Lae, Papua New Guinea; two sisters Wilma Heidorn of Gillette, WY, and Dorothy (Tom) Glander of Perham, MN; and one brother Tom (Sharon) DeLine of Mableton, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
IOLA M. BRADKE
The funeral service for Iola M. Bradke, 92, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Monday, August 1, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Jais H. Tinglund officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Iola died Thursday, July 28 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.
Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Iola M. Vetch was born on April 19, 1919 to John and Elizabeth (Biernbaum) Vetch at Roscoe, SD. This is the area where she grew up and attended school.
Iola married Alfred Bradke on March 5, 1941 at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home on the family farm for three years. They then moved to the Daniel Damm farm east of Barnard SD. They remained there until 1983 when they retired and moved into Aberdeen. Alfred died on May 19, 1999.
Iola was a member of Sand Lake Club from 1965-1993 and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia and became a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church after moving to Aberdeen. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting and ceramics.
Grateful for having shared Iola’s life are her son Jerome (Nancy) Bradke of Santa Fe TX, daughter Doris (Robert) Tople of Frederick SD, brothers Paul Vetch, Aberdeen, LeRoy Vetch, Alexandria NE, sisters Bernice Beuchler, Selby SD, Walburga Zambo, Selby SD, Gladys Preszler, Aberdeen, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth, her husband, Alfred, twin sister Viola Hettich, sisters Anna Mae Kraft and Eva Vetch, brothers Lawrence Vetch and Johnnie Vetch.
OLINE E. APPLETOFT
The funeral service for Oline E. Appletoft, 90, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 11am, Friday, July 29, 2011 at Plymouth Congregational UCC with Pastor Sam Ellyson officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Redfield, SD. Oline died Tuesday, July 26, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1-7pm Thursday, July 28, with a prayer service at 7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Oline E. Mysse was born on July 8, 1921 at Sokndal, Norway to Ludwig and Hulda (Aasvold) Mysse. She was born and baptized into the Lutheran faith. In October of 1927, they moved to Billings, MT for six months and then moved to Anaconda, MT. She grew up and attended school there, graduating from Anaconda High School with the class of 1940. Oline then attended Montana State Normal at Dillon, MT until 1942 when she received her teaching certificate. During WWII, Oline worked for the war department in Hawaii. It was there that she met Edwin Appletoft. They were married on December 3, 1945 at Las Vegas, NV. She taught school for ten years and worked at various jobs. Oline went back to school later in life and received her BS in history at Black Hills State University. They made their home in Spearfish, SD. Edwin died on June 6, 1985 at Sturgis, SD. Oline remained in Spearfish until 2006 when she moved to Aberdeen to be close to family.
Oline attended Plymouth Congregational UCC of Aberdeen. She was an avid reader and enjoyed telling stories of history.
Grateful for having shared Oline’s life are her two sons, Edwin (Eloise) Appletoft, Jr. and Thomas (LaVonne) Appletoft, both of Aberdeen, ten grandchildren; Estelle Grote, Eric Appletoft, Elisha (Mark) Jastram, Evanie Appletoft, Janey (Brian) Appletoft Knie, Eliott Appletoft, Eli Appletoft, Jamie (Kari) Appletoft, Michael Appletoft and Allison Appletoft, and four great grandchildren; Nathan Grote, Maxwell Jastram, Julia Knie and Alexis Appletoft. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ludwig and Hulda, her husband, Edwin, one son, Roy, and her sister, Gladys Brien.

The funeral service for Pearl Wacholz, 82, Aberdeen, will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen. Pearl died Monday, July 25, 2011 at Manor Care Health Services, Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 1-7 pm Wednesday, July 27 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Pearl Jeannette Nelson was born on June 8, 1929 to Emil & Oda (Herrmanson) Nelson at Galesburg ND. She grew up and attended school in southern Minnesota.
Pearl moved to Minneapolis MN, where on February 15, 1947 she was united in marriage to Loren Wacholz. Loren & Pearl settled in Mansfield MN where three children were added to this union. Loren passed away in January of 1966. Pearl was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed fishing and boating, playing bingo, caring for her dogs and cooking. Above all she enjoyed her time spent with family.

RICK R. HOFF
Funeral service for Rick R. Hoff, 63, Aberdeen will be 10:30am, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Winfried J. Schroeder officiating. Military rites will be performed by Sindey L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at a later date. Rick died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the VA Memorial Medical Center at Sioux Falls, SD.
Visitation will be from 1:00-7:00pm, with family present from 5:00-7:00pm Monday, July 18 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Rick Raymond Hoff, son of Raymond and Virginia (Brandner) Hoff was born on December 14, 1947. He was raised and attended school in the Roscoe, SD area which is where he went on to graduate from high school. He was active in athletics while attending Roscoe High School, lettering in football, basketball and track. Rick went on to attend Northern State University where he also played football.
Rick enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966 and served as a radar man during the Vietnam War. He received his honorable discharge in 1970. At this time Rick began making his home in San Diego, CA. He was employed at National Steel and later went to work for Sunstrand while in California. In 1997 he returned to Aberdeen.
Rick was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed San Diego Chargers Football and San Diego Padres Baseball. Rick liked to play golf and he also enjoyed snow skiing and white water rafting. One of his greatest joys was playing Uno with his great nephew Brady.
Grateful for having shared his life are his mother Virginia Hoff of Aberdeen, sister Rhonda Rogers of Aberdeen, niece Melissa (Troy) Rohrbach, great nephew Brady Rohrbach, nephew Greg (Jaime) Rogers, great nieces Tessa and Jenna Rogers and great nephew Drake Rogers.
Rick was preceded in death by his father Raymond Hoff and both maternal and paternal grandparents.
LYLE R. ZERBEL
The funeral service for Lyle R. Zerbel, 69, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Pastor Nathan Henschen officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Lyle died Monday, July 11, at his home in Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 9:00am until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
