LILLIAN SAYLER
Funeral services for Lillian Sayler, 82, Aberdeen are 10:30 am, Tuesday, September 6 at Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Randy Battey officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Lillian died Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at ManorCare Health Services of Aberdeen.
Visitation: 1-7 pm, Monday with family present from 5-7 and a prayer service at 7 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.
Lillian was born to Henry and Amelia (Dollinger) Nies on July 26, 1929 where they lived on a farm northeast of Eureka, SD. Lillian attended country school and the Eureka Baptist Church. Lillian was united in marriage to Elmer Sayler on May 23, 1948 at the Eureka Baptist Church in Eureka, SD. They were married for 63 years at the time of her parting. Elmer and she farmed northwest of Leola , SD and had 4 children. In 1972 they sold their farm and moved to Aberdeen, SD. They purchased a quarter of land northwest of Aberdeen and developed it into residential housing; naming it Richmond Heights. Lillian became the bookkeeper for Sayler Construction and Sayler Rentals while building three homes and working as a housekeeper for Jerde Hall at Northern State College (currently Northern State University) and The Holiday Inn (currently the Ramada). Lillian retired from the Aberdeen Living Center (currently Aberdeen Health and Rehab) in 1995 where she was a Cook.
In 1997, Elmer and Lillian built their “retirement home.” Lillian enjoyed entertaining and cooking for family and friends, and gardening. She especially enjoyed making the grandchildren’s favorite German dishes such as kuchen, dumplings, knepfla, and strudel. Her kuchen was the best around, spoiling her family’s taste for any other kuchen. She was always concerned that everyone had enough to eat. Her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys. She loved them dearly and was always willing to baby-sit and play games with them. Elmer and Lillian have attended Calvary Baptist Church since 1972 where she taught Sunday School, Children’s Church, and prepared Children’s Activity Bags. Lillian was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March and Elmer never left her side during her struggle. The family will always appreciate the example he set as he showed unconditional love and commitment.
Grateful for having shared Lillian’s life are her husband, Elmer Sayler, Aberdeen, two sons, and two daughters: Mary (Dennis) Kautz of Aberdeen, SD; Kenneth (Donna) Sayler of Cleveland, Texas; James (Cheryl) Sayler of Aberdeen, SD; and Lori (Brad) Naasz of Aberdeen, SD, three sisters and two brothers: Amelia Knoepfle of Eureka, SD; Olga Hansen of St. Paul, Minnesota; Virginia (Johnny) Geist of Alamogordo, New Mexico; Elmer (Eleanor) Nies of St. Paul, Minnesota; AlNathan (Darlene) Nies of St. Paul, Minnesota; an aunt Frances Nies of Auburn, Nebraska; two grandsons: John Haskell, and Kyle Sayler, three granddaughters: Faith Naasz, Rachel Sayler, and Leah Naasz, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death.
The family requests green plants in lieu of flowers.
EDITH LILLIAN ZUMM
Edith Lillian Zumm, long-time Aberdeen resident, died at home in Pikeville, TN on Thursday, August 25, 201l at the age of 96. The memorial service will be at 11 am, Friday, September 2, 2011 at Plymouth Congregational UCC with Pastor Jill Warner officiating. Burial will be at 10 am, Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Spitzer- Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. is in charge of arrangements.
She was born in Aberdeen on November 26, 1914 to John William and Edith Rebecca Drage. She graduated from Central High School and attended Northern State Teachers College until she began work at the Aberdeen American News and later at the Dakota Farmer magazine.
On June 9, 1937 she married Leslie Willard Zumm and they had two daughters. While raising her family, she worked at several retail stores, including Montgomery Wards and the Dottie Dunn Hat Shop.
She was a life-long member of the Plymouth Congregational Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and belonged to the Women's Fellowship.
Lillian loved reading, traveling and homemaking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Zumm, parents, sister Anne Stellner and sons-in-law, Ross P. Chiles and Paul Wayne Byerly Sr,. both of whom also died in 2011.
Grateful for having shared Edith’s life are her daughters, Sharon Chiles of Austin, TX and Barbara Byerly of Pikeville, TN; granddaughters Bethany (David) Gonzales and Lesley (Rusty) Welch; great-grandchildren Brooks and Kendall Gonzales and Kaleigh and Brady Welch; and five step-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church.
DON Y. JENSEN
Don Y. Jensen, 91, Aberdeen died Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen, SD.
Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, August 28 with family present at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Christian Worship Hour, North Plains Hospice and Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Don Y. Jensen, son of Ernest E. and Neva B. (Ralphs) Jensen was born on January 24, 1920 in Castle Dale, Utah. This is the area where he grew up and graduated from Central High School. He went on to attend college at the University of Utah and Utah State University.
Don enlisted in the United States Army on February 19, 1942 and served in the European Theater until 1946. He received his honorable discharge on March 15, 1946. He went on to graduate from Utah State University in 1947 at which time he began working at BIA in Billings Regional Office, Billings, MT. He married Mary Roberts Rhinehart on September 1, 1950 at Billings, MT. They lived in Crow Agency, MT, Browning, MT, Fort Yates, ND, Lame Deer, MT, Cherokee, NC where Don worked for the BIA. He transferred to the Aberdeen Area Office in 1966 and worked there until his retirement in 1979 where he and Mary continued to make Aberdeen their home. Mary died on July 26, 2004 at Aberdeen.
Don especially loved his daughter and grandchildren. He always thought of others before himself.
Grateful for having shared Don’s life are his daughter, Rae M. (Dennis) Feickert, Aberdeen, granddaughter, Megan Engelhart (Christopher Theiling), Kansas City, MO and adopted brother and loyal friend, Barney Old Coyote, Belgrade, MT.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jensen, parents, Ernest and Neva Jensen, grandson, Nathan Engelhart, brother, Ralph Jensen, sisters, Elaine Jensen and Helen Peacock.
SHIRLEY J. ULLRICH
The Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley J. Ullrich, 76, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 29, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Father Shaun Haggerty, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery. Shirley died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 1-7 p.m. Sunday, August 28 with family present from 5-7 and a Wake at 7:00 p.m., at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Shirley J. Mills was born on August 8, 1935 to Forrest and Alice (Arndt) Mills at Aberdeen, SD. She grew up and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1953. After high school Shirley worked for a department store in Aberdeen for a couple of years.
Shirley married James “Jim” Ullrich on July 21, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. They continued to make Aberdeen their home and Shirley stayed at home to raise their three children. In the mid 1970’s, Shirley started work as a loan officer for the SODES Credit Union that served employees of the Department of Labor. She stayed there for about ten years. Later, she drove school bus for the Aberdeen School District for several years. For nearly 25 years Shirley volunteered at the library at Simmons Elementary School. She dearly loved the children she was able to help.
Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her family. They would go camping in the Black Hills nearly every year. Shirley was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mystery novels. She also liked to cook and bake.
Grateful for having shared Shirley’s life are her husband, Jim of Aberdeen, three children, Michael (Sandy) Ullrich of Aberdeen, Patricia (Jay) Redlin of Estancia, NM, and Thomas (Aimee) Ullrich of Bath, SD, five grandchildren, Jamie Ullrich, Brandon Ullrich, Courtney Ullrich, Zachary Ullrich and Connor Ullrich, and three nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Alice Mills and her brother Don Mills.
SALLY A. NORTON
The memorial service for Sally Norton, 84, Groton, will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, David Hussey officiating. Sally died Thursday, August 25, at Golden Living Center of Groton. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen.
Sally A. Williamson was born June 15, 1927 at Aberdeen to Alan and Adelaide (Koch) Williamson. She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1945. She attended Northern State College, then transferred to the University of Minnesota graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1950. She worked five years in Minneapolis, MN as a medical secretary/receptionist. On July 11 she married William H. Norton in Aberdeen, SD. She began working for Dr. McCarthy, Dr. Leon and Radiology Services as a receptionist, medical secretary, and then bookkeeper until her retirement.
Sally was a lifetime member of St. Mark’s Episcopalian Church where she was a lay reader and past Directress of St. Mark’s Alter Guild. She was a active and a past officer of the Episcopal church women. She taught a two year Bethel Class. She was part of several bridge marathon groups and the Club 20 couples bride club. In high school she was a member of the Acappella Choir, Keystone Honor Society, Student Court, Quill and Scroll. She was also a Staff member of Blue and Gold Newspaper. In college she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a third generation member of Chapter B, PEO and held all offices. She was a member of the La Sertoma and was the 1993 La Sertoma of the Year. She held the office of president and was a tutor for the Aberdeen Area Literacy Council. She held the offices of Secretary and Chairman for the Red Cross Gray Ladies, and was a volunteer coordinator for the Dacotah Prairie Museum as well as a Borad of Trustee member, Brown County Historical Society Board of Directors member, Amphictyon Club member, Clio Circle and held various other offices.
Grateful for having shared Sally’s life are her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother.
ARVELLA JOYCE JAPS
The funeral service for Arvella Joyce Japs, 90, of Aberdeen, will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 26, 2011, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Arvella died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 1-7 p.m. Thursday, August 25, with family present from 5-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Arvella Anderson was born May 18, 1921, to Clarence and Pearl (Frase) Anderson at Webster. Her family moved to Aberdeen when she was young and she attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1939. After graduating she worked for Bell Telephone Company as an operator.
Arvella married Robert Japs on April 26, 1944, at Aberdeen. Arvella was active in the community. She worked at the election polls, the Heart Fund Drive, and was an avid animal lover and volunteered at the Aberdeen Humane Society with Robert. They also helped with youth sports tournaments in Aberdeen. Arvella was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she served as the Sunday School Secretary, was on the Altar Guild, was active in a Bible study and helped with the church's Bingo group at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.
She bowled in the Early Bird League with her daughter Trudy on Thursday mornings and met with friends for breakfast on Wednesday mornings. A group of her friends played cards together in a bridge club and she liked crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Arvella enjoyed camping with her family in their camper and many fun times at Granny's Cabin at Mina Lake. She and Robert loved dancing together. They first met at a dance at the Roof Garden and spent many evenings dancing at the Elks Lodge. She also collected pig memorabilia. Arvella spent many years caring for her parents when they were older. She made scrapbooks with pictures for her children and grandchildren. She truly loved her family and had a servant's heart.
Grateful for having shared Arvella's life are her two children, Trudy (Levern) Didreckson, Aberdeen, and Bob (Jeanette) Japs, Sioux Falls; three grandchildren: Wendy (Ben) Godwin, Dothan, AL, and David Didreckson and Brenda Simon, both of Aberdeen; stepgrandson, Bryan Ponwith, Sioux Falls; and five great-grandchildren: Josh (Samantha) Mitzel, U.S. Marine Corps, Darren Didreckson and Haley Simon, both of Aberdeen, Isaac Godwin and Rebecca Godwin, Dothan, AL; sister, Bonnie Breen, Red Wing, MN; two nieces, Kathy (Jim) Bell, Tucson, AZ, and Debbie (Paul) Weinmeyer, Red Wing, MN, and their children, John and James Weinmeyer; and many cousins.
Arvella was preceded in death by her husband Robert November 4, 2007, and her parents, Clarence and Pearl.
DEANE E. SAMPSELL
Memorial service for Deane E. Sampsell, 83, Lisbon, ND will be 11:00am, Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen. Kathie Allstot will officiate. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Deane passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Lisbon Hospital.
Deane E. Sampsell, son of William and Hester (Pfeiffer) Sampsell, was born on August 18, 1928 near Aberdeen. He grew up and attended school in the Westport, SD area. Deane enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, receiving his honorable discharge in 1947. He was united in marriage to Ione Kaven on September 15, 1951 in Warner, SD. Together the couple made their home near Edgemont, SD where Deane was employed with the Black Hills Army Depot.
In 1964, Deane began working in St. Louis, MO where he and his family remained until 1974. The family relocated to Warren, Michigan in 1974 and Deane continued work as a civil servant for the Federal government. In 1981, Deane retired after thirty years of service.
During his retirement, Deane enjoyed camping and collecting antiques. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed repairing bicycles in his free time. In 2004, Deane and Ione moved to Lisbon, ND, where he remained until the time of his death.
Grateful for having shared Deane’s life are his wife Ione, daughter Jodie (Dennis) York and three grand dogs, Peter, Gus and Hazel, all of Lisbon.
Deane was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lois Fossum.

GEORGE G. KETTERLING
Funeral services for George G. Ketterling, 84, Aberdeen are 10:30am, Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. George died Wednesday, July 20, at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.
Visitation: 1:00-7:00pm, Monday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.
George G. Ketterling was born on October 12, 1926 to George and Karolina (Guthmiller) Ketterling at Hillsview, SD. George attended school at Hillsview, Long Lake, and Leola. He married Irene Schaffer at Long Lake on October 19, 1947. They lived on a farm near Lehr and later moved to a farm near Eureka. They moved to Long Lake in the fall of 1949 and in 1950 they moved to Ashley where he worked at a furniture store. In 1951 they moved to Quinn, SD and George worked as a foreman on a ranch and also was a welder for Minuteman Missle Silos. In 1954 they moved to Aberdeen where he worked for Berens Lumber, Lampert Lumber and Town and Country Supplies until 1964 when he had back surgery. He started his own business called George’s Tenth Ave. Saw Services until he retired in December 1986. Irene died January 11, 2002. George married Barbara (Tucay) Kerr on May 16, 2010 in Las Vegas, NV. They made their home in Aberdeen.
George had a self-taught ability to repair any type of small engine. He said that he first learned about mechanics from his dad, who had him completely disassemble and reassemble an entire tractor. He enjoyed listening to polka music, playing cards, fishing, hunting and word find puzzles.
Grateful for having shared George’s life are his wife, Barbara Ketterling, Aberdeen, daughters, Darlene Sanders, Sioux Falls, Linda (Laddie) Vetsch, Gerri Ketterling, and Julie (Jim) Kaul, all of Aberdeen; step-children, Julie York, James Kerr, and Jennifer (William) Greene, brother, Martin (Frances) Ketterling, sisters, Esther Schock, Emma Kleinkneckt and Anna (Eugene) Smith, nine grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, his parents, George and Karolina Ketterling, son, Gene Ketterling, brother, Ernest Ketterling, sisters, Clara Melaas and Margaret Ketterling.
ROZELL FANNIE TOVAAS
The funeral service for Rozell F. Tovaas, 81, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday August 16, 2011 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will be at Haley Cemetery, Haley, ND. Rozell died Friday, August 12, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Rozell Fannie Newell was born on December 23, 1929 at Aberdeen, SD to Lawrence and Fannie (Larson) Newell. She attended kindergarten and first grade in Aberdeen. The family then moved to Washington State where she went to second through the ninth grades. They moved to Garden City, SD and then to Harding County, SD where her parents farmed. In 1947 they moved to Wisconsin. On December 2, 1947 she was married to Newell Tovaas at Park Rapids, MN. They lived the first three years of their married life in various places in the area. In 1950, they moved to Seattle Washington and continued to live there until 1968 when they moved to Kent, WA. Mr. Tovaas died on April 14, 1974 and in 1978, Rozell moved to Aberdeen where she has lived since.
Rozell enjoyed cross-stitching and crocheting afghans for the St. Labre Indian School, playing bingo, baking, cooking and making candy, traveling and spending time online on her computer. Rozell loved kids, corresponding and spending time with family.
Grateful for having shared Rozell’s life are her sister, Esther (Jim) Bakeberg of Watertown, SD, and many nieces and nephews.
Rozell was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Fannie, her husband, Newell and three brothers, DuWayne Newell, Harold Newell and Francis Newell.
