DR. F. OTTO SCHNAIDT

The memorial service for Dr. F. Otto Schnaidt, 85, Ipswich, will be 11am, Wednesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with Pastor William Lee Nelson-Loefke officiating. Military honors will be at the church by Roy S. Hickman Post Number 78. Otto died Friday, April 23, 2010 at Golden Living Center, Ipswich SD.

Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.

F. Otto Schnaidt was born on August 14, 1924, at Eureka, SD to Christian and Rosalla (Nathan) Schnaidt. The family moved to a farm in the Leola area where he grew up and attended school. After graduating from Leola High School in 1943, Otto served in the US Army for one year. He then attended Northern State College for a three year pre-dental course. He then attended Loyloa Dental School in Chicago, IL, graduating in 1954 with a degree in dental surgery. Otto practiced dentistry in Leola for 22 years. He served on the school board for 16 years. In 1976, Otto moved his practice to Aberdeen. He retired in 1986. Otto continued to make Aberdeen his home.

Otto was a member of the Les Curtis Study Club and American Dental Association. He served as president of the South Dakota Dental Association for one year. Otto has been a life long member of the American Lutheran Chruch.

Grateful for having shared Otto’s life are his brothers, Albert (Patricia) Schnaidt, Aberdeen, Merle Schnaidt, Mobridge, Larry (Marie) Schnaidt, Groton, and dear friend Judy Wilson, Aberdeen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lea Geffre, Adeline Slater, and brother, Rueben Schnaidt.

LEONHART GIENGER

The funeral service for Leonhart Gienger, 88, of Aberdeen, SD, will be10:30am, Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Leonhart died Thursday, April 22 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, Monday, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Leonhart Gienger was born on March 3, 1922 at Long Lake, SD to Gottlieb and Rosina (Walth) Gienger. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. On October 28, 1944 he entered the US Army and was honorably discharged on November 16, 1946.

On June 8, 1947 Leonhart married Christina Gehring at rural Leola, SD. They lived on various farms and in 1966 they moved to Aberdeen. Leonhart worked as a carpenter until 1995 when he retired. For years, Leonhart worked as a custodian at Northern State University. He also built storage buildings with Andy Kramer and delivered Meals on Wheels in his spare time. On May 2, 2002, Leonhart moved to Primrose and then to Towne Square that December to be closer to Christina. Christina died on July 27, 2004. Leonhart later moved to Bethesda Home of Aberdeen on October 5, 2006.

Leonhart was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. He was also a member of Aberdeen Senior Citizens Center, RSVP, Friendship Singers and the VFW. Leonhart loved to fish. One of his greatest joys came from music and he spent countless hours singing and recording his favorite songs.

Greatful for having shared Leonhart’s life are his brother, Gottlieb (Rose) Gienger, and three sisters, Ida Fauth, Viola Tetherow and Wilma (Roger) Zimmerman, all of Aberdeen, and his sister-in-law, Eileen Gienger of Mobridge, SD.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Reinhard Gienger and sister, Frieda Hoffman.

MARJORIE WIEDEBUSH

The funeral service for Marjorie Wiedebush, 97, Aberdeen, will be 1:00pm, Friday, April 23, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Mansfield, SD. Marjorie died Tuesday, April 20, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Thursday, April 22 at the funeral home.

Marjorie Smith was born January 8, 1913 at Mansfield, SD to Victor & Lena (Niermann) Smith. This is the area where she grew up and attended school graduating from Mellette High School.

On June 4, 1932, Marjorie married Fred Wiedebush at Mansfield, SD. They farmed in the Mansfield area until 1978, when they moved to Northville. Later she moved to Aberdeen, SD.

Marjorie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mansfield.

Marjorie enjoyed music, crotcheting, cooking and baking. She loved angels.

Grateful for having shared Marjorie’s life are her children, Dean (Marjorie) Wiedebush, Rapid City, Kent (Joy) Wiedebush, Aberdeen, Jerry (Jan) Wiedebush, Bigfork, MT, Tom (Lynne) Wiedebush, Tuscan, AZ, Kay Bacon, Rapid City, sisters, Dorothy Bierman, LaVaun Peterson, Victoria Perry, Audrey Boschee, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, brother, Archie Smith and sister, Carol Hall.

The family prefers memorials to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Mansfield.

DIXIE ANN CUSEY

The funeral service for DixieAnn Cusey, 70, Aberdeen, will be 10:00am, Friday, April 23, 2010 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St, with Pastor Gary Wileman officiating. Burial will be at Mellette Cemetery. Dixie went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 20, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Visitation will be from 1-8pm, Thursday at the funeral home.

DixieAnn Burt was born December 15, 1939 at Mellette, SD to Samuel & Anna (Gange) Burt. She graduated from Warner High School with the Class of 1956.

In 1957, DixieAnn married Robert “Bob” Norton at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Warner, SD. They moved to the Naval Base at Portsmouth, VA. To this union were added three sons, Robert Jr, Roger and Russell “Rusty”. The family moved back to Mellette, where DixieAnn and Bob were later divorced.

DixieAnn married Jesse Cusey in Aberdeen and together they had two children, Desiree and Wesley. They lived in Minneapolis, MN and later rural Brainard, MN.

DixieAnn was a bookkeeper in the retail industry, and later held positions in the food, manufacturing and health care industries.

DixieAnn enjoyed crotcheting, completing crossword puzzles, arts and crafts, playing cards and watching wrestling. She loved having coffee with her family and friends at Marlin’s.

Grateful for having shared DixieAnn’s life are her children, Robert (Terry) Norton, Roger (Carla) Norton, Russell “Rusty” Norton, grandchildren, Daniel, Charity, Bobby, Stephanie, Zachary, Heather, Samantha, great grandchildren, Haley, Hanna, Thomas; sisters, Marie Wilson, Jessie Loebs, GeeGee Kitzler, brothers, Roy (Irene) Burt, Raymond Burt, Russell (Millie) Burt, Bill Burt, and Jim (Janet) Burt, many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, children, Desiree Cusey and Wesley Cusey, sister-in-law, Millie Burt, brothers-in-law, Walter Kitzler, Ed Wilson, Wayne Johnson, nephew, Michael Burt and two great nieces.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

The family would like to extend a special thank you for all of those that participated in the care of DixieAnn.

ROBERT J. COURTNEY, JR.

The funeral service for Robert J. Courtney, Jr. 62, Aberdeen, will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 24, 2010 at St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, Aberdeen. Father Joe Holzhauser, Fr. Jeff Norfolk and Deacon Peter Mehlaff, Concelebrants. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. After interment lunch will be served at St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Robert died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Manor Care Health Services in Aberdeen following a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Visitation will be from 3-7pm, Friday, with a Wake Service at 5pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Robert J. Courtney, Jr. was born September 13, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA to Robert & Helen (Gray) Courtney. He grew up and attended school in Havertown, PA. Robert graduated from LaSalle University with a B.S in Psychology and went on to earn his Masters Degree in Counseling at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. He met Kathie Demery from Onida, SD who was also attending ISU and they were united in marriage in Terre Haute, IN.

Robert served as the Director of Residence Life and Student Activities at Northern State University for 21 years. For two of those years, Robert served as the interim Dean of Student Affairs. Following his retirement in September, 2009, he continued to serve NSU as Director of Special Projects for the Division of Student Affairs.

Robert was actively involved in Odyssey of the Mind/Destination Imagination for over 20 years. He judged at local, state and world competitions throughout the United States.

Robert was a member of the South Dakota College Personnel Association having served as president in 1993-1994 and in 2008 received the Patrick Merrigan Distinguished Service Award. Twice he was named Outstanding Student Organization advisor at NSU. In his free time, Robert enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and hunting and fishing. He was proud to be a part of NSU and was an avid Wolves sports fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Denise Courtney; and brother, Dennis Courtney.

Grateful for having shared Robert’s life are his wife, Kathie (Demery) Courtney, children, Amanda (Jacob) Weaver, Patrick Courtney, Alicia Courtney (Ryan Palmer), grandchildren David & Nicholas Weaver, brother, Donald (Patty) Courtney, sister, Joan (Thomas) Leicht, sister-in-law, Marian Courtney.

CAROLYN JACOBSON

Funeral services for Carolyn Jacobson, 59, of Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Holzhauser, celebrant. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Carolyn died Monday, April 19, at her home.

Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Thursday, April 22, with family present from 5-7 p.m., at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.

Carolyn Peterson was born Dec. 1, 1950, to James and Winnifred (Kreber) Peterson in Mitchell. She grew up in Mitchell, graduated from Mitchell High School in 1969 and attended Northern State University. While in high school, she met her future husband Ken when both worked at the Dog n’ Suds drive-in.

On Sept. 4, 1971, Carolyn married Ken Jacobson in Mitchell. The couple has lived in Aberdeen, where their son Kerry was born. Carolyn has worked at the Aberdeen National Bank (now US Bank), Aman Collection Service, and WEB Water Development.

Carolyn always put her family first and especially enjoyed the many hours she spent watching her son Kerry play baseball. She was president of the Women’s City Classic Bowling League and an avid golfer in the women’s golf league at Moccasin Creek. She was a long-time active member of a monthly Bunko group.

Grateful for having shared Carolyn’s life are her husband, Ken Jacobson; her son Kerry Jacobson and fiancé Annie Bertrand, all of Aberdeen; sisters Mary Arnold (Doug Arbogast) Brookings; Beth (Rau´l) Duarte, Lima, Peru; Christine (Frank) Yetka, Cloquet, Minn., and Nancy (Matthew) Dennis, Sioux Falls.

She is preceded in death by her parents, parents in law Roy and Emma Jacobson, and sister, Susan Peterson.

The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society, 525 5th St. SE #4, Watertown, SD 57201 or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2508 S. Carolyn Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57106.

SHARON LUST

The memorial service for Sharon Lust, 69, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 11:00am, Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with Rev. William Lee Nelson-Loefke and Rev. Sheila Richards officiating. Sharon died Saturday, April 17, at ManorCare Health Services at Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-7pm, Tuesday, April 20 with family present from 5-7pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Sharon Perle Bock was born October 29, 1940, to George & Elaine (Selland) Bock at Mitchell, SD. After graduating from high school, she attended Northern State University prior to enrolling at the University of South Dakota where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree.

On June 7, 1960, Sharon married Gerald “Jerry” Lust. To this union, two children John and Julie were born.

Sharon went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Northern State University. She taught at Simmons Junior High and then Aberdeen Central High School, retiring in 2006.

Sharon was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Honorary Education Society Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO Chapter BX and AAUW. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and also loved reading.

Grateful for having shared Sharon’s life are her children, John (Jeanelle) Lust, Lincoln, NE, Julie (Tim) O’Reilly, Woodbury, MN, grandchildren, Joseph & Jack Lust, George & Charles O’Reily, mother, Elaine Bock and sister, Linda (Randy) Boone.

She is preceded in death by her father, George Bock and husband, Gerald “Jerry”.

MARTIN WEGEHAUPT

Memorial service for Martin Wegehaupt, 96, Aberdeen will be 2 pm, Sunday, April 18 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. with Pastor Mary Anne Nelson-Loefke officiating. Martin died Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Aberdeen Health & Rehab.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

Martin Wegehaupt was born February 24, 1914 near Delmont, SD, the fourth of nine children. He attended high school in Delmont and graduated from Concordia College, Seward, NE, with a BA in education. He completed a Masters degree in education administration at Southern Illinois University.

Martin spent his career as an elementary teacher and principal in Lutheran Schools. His first teaching assignment was in Zap, ND, and from there he went to Columbia, SD where he met and married Alice Eichler, his wife of nearly 70 years. His teaching career took him to Watertown, MN, Frohna, MO, Steeleville, IL, Des Plaines, IL, and Danville, IL, where he retired. Over 40 years of teaching, he touched the lives of countless children and young teachers many of whom maintained contact with him through the years.

Martin's greatest pleasure was in music. While in college, he was the tenor in a touring acapella quartet. Every congregation where he taught he also served as organist and music director. He directed many church choirs, but his special joy was children's choirs. He made it fun to sing and learn up to six part choral music. Twice his children's choirs were invited to sing on nationally broadcast radio programs. He was also invited to direct a mass choir of over 500 voices at a music festival in central Illinois.

After retirement, Martin and Alice moved to Aberdeen, SD, to be near their brothers and sisters. Martin loved fishing and had many hobbies including reading, oil painting, wood working, and gardening. He took great pleasure in leading songs and devotions at Parkside Apartments where he and Alice have lived for 17 years. The entire Parkside community was dear to his heart as were two special friends, Gary Bretsch and Tom Blondo.

Martin was a remarkably compassionate man. He believed in tolerance, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and he dedicated himself to alleviating suffering and injustice. He was a devoted husband and father who will be greatly missed by his wife, Alice; his children, Richard, Paul, Ruth and Linda; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and surviving siblings, Walter, Erwin, Linda and Adolph.

DARLYS J. BUSCH

Funeral service for Darlys J. Busch, 69, of Aberdeen, will be at 10:30am Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Aberdeen. Pastor Hyle Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Darlys died on Friday, April 16, at her home after a two year battle with cancer.

Visitation will be 1-7pm, Monday, April 19, with family present from 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7:15 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Aberdeen.

Darlys Joanne Berreth, daughter of Albert and Gladys (Tschappat) Berreth was born on March 15, 1941 at Leola, SD. This is the area where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Leola High School with the class of 1959.

Darlys was united in marriage to James Busch on March 13, 1960 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Leola. Together they shared 50 years of marriage. Darlys was involved in food service in Aberdeen for 11 years and was currently Food Service Director at Warner School for 28 years.

Darlys’s greatest joy was her family. She always enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events and spending time with her family and friends. Darlys was active in bowling leagues for many years and was also a member of The-U-Go-I-Go Whist Card Club. In her free time, Darlys enjoyed reading and tending to her flowers. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Darlys’s life her husband James of Aberdeen, three daughters, Laurel Busch, Terrill (Scott) Meier and Kay (Paul) Heupel all of Aberdeen, three grandchildren, Derek Brick, Brittany Heupel and Brantson Meier, two brothers, Larry (Pat) Berreth and Leland (Nancy) Berreth, one sister, Marilyn (Doug) Casey and many nieces and nephews.

Darlys was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Gladys Berreth and one brother Arlen Berreth.

Honorary casket bears will be Darlys’s three grandchildren.

Casket bearers will be Jeff Berreth, Mike Kallas, Ryan Casey, Troy Millard, Brian Brakefield, Ed Fuglestad and Stacy Morton.
